I am highly encouraged by the new leadership at MSU. I look forward to seeing these ideals regarding free speech and respectful dissent making their way through the entire organization. MSU has an opportunity to differentiate itself as a place free from ideological capture. One where differing ideas are valued, and students, not politics, are the top priority.

Our daughter was blessed with you as Chancellor at UNC and now our son is lucky enough to have you at MSU. As parents of a Spartan political science major and alums ourselves, we've watched as meaningful dialogue in our son's college classes has degraded and is often dissuaded--an unfortunate change from our experiences 30 years back. Best to you, President Guskiewicz--like your tenure at UNC, you're setting the example for students, faculty, and staff and we couldn't be happier. Go green!

I liked your statement that "...disagreement need not equate to disrespect..." So true, especially in today's polarized political environment: The voice of reason!

This is such a good message, and I get behind it.
The United States is such a special place because free speech is enshrined in the constitution.

Thank you for understanding constitutional rights. People have a right to speak and file legally allowed complaints without threats of retaliation from that very government. All too often in the United States the government has retaliated against citizens for filing complaints including unlawful detention of minorities. Those detentions as I have personally witnessed continue. They include threats of violence by the United States against citizens on US soil for peacefully assembling or speakings. There is an attack on these rights for citizens to speak and point out grave human rights violations.

Of course, absolutely welcome free speech which is what our USA represents ……however….…maintain respectful expression of beliefs and opinions
while using empathy and passion without threats of harm to one’s fellow man, one’s group or one’s culture.
Go Green….may this be a peaceful fall term and school year that embraces and celebrates the differences and commonalities amongst each student.

2:03 "Please don't be that one student who starts trending on social media by throwing a tantrum and cursing out people on campus because they said something you didn't agree with..."

As an alumnus, I may actually start being a donor again. But we shall see... Start with James Madison College. Audit the classes and see if the professors actually welcome debate.

it's not free speech when it involves hatred and violence. When it involves discrimination against another person beliefs Intimidation because of their religion which we have seen on many campuses without consequences and being encouraged by teachers and staff that uses their power to also discriminate and intimidate against those same people. Do you have a plan to defend these students or are you just words, are you willing to protect or give out consequences for walkouts, disruptions of classrooms or pathways blocked on campus, are you calling this freedom of speech, so your saying protesting is freedom of speech. Good Luck not being another UofM or UCLA, Columbia.
