    Thank you! Both of the front door handles on our '96 Camry were broken after different ice storms. I've never fixed anything on a car before (I'm a 59-year-old woman) and I was able to replace both of the handles after watching this video. The best part was the surprise on my husband's face when he went to get groceries out of the car and the handle was fixed (he didn't know I was doing it). It really gave me a boost of confidence! He asked me if I was going to tackle a small dent on the front next! I couldn't have done it without this video--thank you, thank you!!

    Thank you so much for this video! Saved me hundreds of dollars and I bought the part from you guys with free shipping. Woot! Took me about twenty minutes and I no longer have to crawl through the passenger side of the car. Haha.

    This video was so helpful to me. I replaced the driver's side outside door handle on my grandfathers '92 Camry in about 45minutes after watching this video (IM ONLY 15). One door handle down, 3more to go :)

    I have a 98 Camry with a broken inside door handle on the passenger side. This video has helped me tremendously because I didn't have a dealer close by to replace the handle for me.

    This video is very useful, with one exception: DO NOT allow the bolts to drop into the bottom of the door when removing the old handle mechanism. I did so, and while I had no problem locating the right side bolt (viewed from the inside), the left side bolt disappeared. I never found it in spite of a careful search with a variety of probing devices including a flexible magnetic probe. I ended up having to buy a replacement.

    This video was perfect. I love it when my mechanic tells me a procedure is too complicated and I manage to do it myself.
    There were only two things I would add
    1- If you have the tiny door tweeter, you have to remove the cover of the speaker to access the fourth door bolt
    2- if you have electric locks you need to unbolt that component from the handle in order to remove the handle from the car

    • @wrb1000
      @wrb1000 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David, is that component bolted to the door frame or to the handle?. I am undertaking this project next week to replace each lock cylinder. They freeze up every winter and need to go. Just for a laugh, I asked Toyota how much time they would charge to do each door. They said about an hour and a half EACH at over $110/hour.

    Very helpful video. I needed to replace both interior/exterior driver's door handles on a '92 camry. I watched this video and went to work and was successful after an hour's time. On my care, there is a light underneath the door arm-rest behind whch a screw for the door panel. Also, On my car, the other screw is behind the tweeter speaker. Last, I started with window down and needed to reconnect the panel to throw the switch to raise the window before I could continue work. Great video!

    @glennncarr 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks guys, don't think I could have done it without the video. I ended up not having to unplug the power (just let the door hang). The biggest problem for me was getting my hand into the small space and pulling unlatch bar out. Took me about an hour and didn't have any screws left over ;)

  • @samoht442
    @samoht442 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would like to comment on one thing, since I just went through this process.
    The part about "not worrying" if the bolts fall down into the door, BE WARNED!!
    If the bolt falls into the mechanism where the door release is, protected by a plastic box near where the door latches, it is a nightmare trying to get the bolt out without taking things further.
    My advice, don't let the bolts fall when removing them from the inside.

    The handle bezel removal is one of the best kept secrets that I couldn't remember. Could change my timing belt easier than figuring out the handle bezel without breaking it. You guys are awesome!

    Thanks! I just wanted to say thanks. I could have not put my new door handle on without the video. It just took about an hour+. I did drop one of the screws from the handle and it went as far up to the front door as it could. Lucky I had a long magnet on an antenna like rod. One little hint I could give is if you look down between the glass and door frame you can see parts of the handle good, like the rod and clip. Also I saved the clip from the old one just in case. Also I used a screw driver to help get the clips off, the flat side. Thanks again 1A for the GREAT video!

    Great video, great part. Arrived in just a few days. Just wanted to point out that my door ('93 Camry) was slightly different. Mine had an extra screw hidden behind the courtesy light at the lower rear end of the inside door armrest. Just pop out the light housing (rectangular), disconnect the light power cable connector, and then remove the last door screw.

    Great video! I wish I found this earlier today. It was really frustrating trying to remove the bezel around the inside handle without breaking it but I eventually got it off. I called it quits after that. Now I know exactly what to do tomorrow morning to finish the job. {Thumbs Up}

    Thanks a lot!! It worked like a charm for my 2000 camry so this video is useful for 99-02 camrys too!!! Only hard part was to remove the rod from yellow clip, but it can be done with widening the yellow pin with flat screw driver, have some passions.
    Also don't mesh with old screws, your new handle might need the metric screw, so go get it from the store, if it didn't came with the handle. (Better to keep extra screw when u open the door panel, I dropped 2 of them inside the door..)

  • @ArJuna22
    @ArJuna22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Got the handle replaced, but I wish you had not said to not worry about the screw falling into the door. One of my screws is still lost in there, and not for lack of trying to retrieve or even locate it. Then I lost one of my 10mm sockets. I checked the bottom of the door from end to end. No luck finding either. Good thing I had another screw and another 10mm socket.

    @crazyitch21 The latch is located on the outer edge of the door. It latches the door to a post on the body of the car called a striker. If you can take the door panel off, you may be able to reach inside of the door and release the latch by pulling on the rod that opens the door.

    My drivers side door handle in my 1994 Toyota Camry broke of 2 years ago I just put zip ties and been using that. These cosmetic things in Toyota are cheap and easy to break but their mechanical units(engine, tranny, suspension etc) are rock solid. Got almost 300,000 miles on the Camry and only major replacement was a starter at 100k miles(which is still ok now) and majority of it life the engine check light is on which is also common in Toyota.

    One this that may help recover dropped bolts is a slim telescoping magnet (you can find them at the parts store), if you do drop a bolt it will help you recover it.

    The outside handle on the 2001 is very similar in the steps needed to remove it from the vehicle as the 1992-96 model is just there are different bolt locations holding the panel in.

    For those with newer Camry's, my 2000 was in line with a similar vid entitled "2001 Toyota Camry Door Handle Replacement" posted by "Danbury210"
    but do see the comments there; a few tricky bits. Mostly, you need a 10mm wrench and need to break the existing locking plastic bracket (the yellow one in this vid, and in the one linked above) to get the flanged lever arm out.
    I'd watch both vids; some good pointers here too!

  • @1AAuto

    @Lebbz It really depends on the shops labor rate. If it's not a repair that you feel comfortable doing yourself, then you may want to ask a couple of auto body shops.

    Oh mine had electric door locks it was a pain in the you know what. That little metal piece on the top is where it hooks to and it screws into the empty hole in the middle of the handle.. You must loosen the screw for it after you take out the main screws and pull the handle out a little so you can get to it. And when you put it together make sure you put it on before you put the handle back in the door.The screw needs to be loose so that you can move the electric gismo in the door with the handle. Then you can tighten the screw once in the door from the other side. Then put you main screws back in.. A one hour job took me 2. Damn

    Thanks! Was a great help in me figuring out how the lock system works and how to re-attach the lock rod after it was displaced by a slim jim. The 10 mm bolts were impossible for me to remove, however, with a socket and driver. Ended up re-attaching the lock rod and clip without removing the outside door handle (now I know how performing microsurgery feels). Overall, great vid!

    An extra hint I found useful. It is easier to see and feed the replacement of the arm into the new door handle if you look down through the window slot opening.

    @jeffpwnsgingernoobs This covers the 92-96 model years. It may be similar on the 97, we currently do not have a repair video for this particular year.

    Not sure if the dealer would have that too. You may need to find one of those in a salvage yard.

    We currently do not have a video that shows this partucular repair. We'll keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this request in the future.

    You may be able to buy a new clip at the dealer.

    Very useful video, HOWEVER, your comment at about 5:45 that it is okay for the removed 10mm bolt to drop to the bottom of the door, really isn't: In my case, it fell into the plastic channel housing the lock/unlock rod that connects to the exterior key. I erroneously presumed the bolt was in the very corner of the door and that I just wasn't able to reach it. Put everything back together, and everything worked at first. Later, i would have to unlock the car from the passenger side. On the repaired side, the key would only lock, not unlock the vehicle. Back to square-one, I began to remove the entire latch assembly, and failed. Desperate, I got out an endoscope to look down the plastic track, wondering if there was some kind of obstruction. You can imagine what I found. With great luck, I was able to fish the bolt out with a magnet. Problem solved -- finally.

    Very good video. But be prepared for surprises - 1) screw in the interior handle bezel, 2) three bolts on exterior handle (lowest one reachable only by 10mm wrench, not ratchet), 3) very difficult to separate vertical lock rod from handle (had to pry the plastic apart which risks breaking it)

    Same issue w/ temps dropping suddenly and front driver's door handle snapping off at the forward hinge. Video is very informative, but with the current cold weather, will not attempt this myself since garage is not heated.

    Is this the same procedure for a '98 Toyota Avalon? If not, can you direct me to a video for that? I could not find one on a general search. Thanks!! You guys have saved me a lot of time and money - really appreciated!
