Love the album. I just wish the mix and post-production were better. This is an album that deserves a wide dynamic range, not a squashed, compressed-to-hell, run-of-the-mill recording.

that's nonsense, they guys from Phoenix love that sound, it's part of their stye

Eduardo Trevino That's disappointing if true. Usually what happens is that the record label will tie the hands of the engineer by requiring it to be as compressed and loud as possible.
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix has a dynamic range of about 6db. That is really not good.
To draw a visual art metaphor, it would be like saying one prefers the muted, lifeless, bland colors of a Bob Ross painting to those of Monet (or any other serious artist).
Look into the "loudness war," and you'll see what I mean. The recent remasters of classic albums actually make them worse, not better. It's because musical dynamics are key to expression and clarity, and when you compress to the extent many albums are, all the life has been squished out of it. If the guys in the band are really professional, top engineers and masterers, then they are going against what engineers and producers (with dozens of Grammies and hundreds of albums under their belts) have been begging the labels to change. Even Metallica's first album has more dynamic range than Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

I know exactly what you mean with the "loudness wars"and the obsession with compression , but in this case all the French artists love that aesthetic of using compressors and limiters to color and style their productions with these effects. it's actually called the "French touch",look it up. It's an aesthetic decision, In the case of Phoenix I'm 100% percent sure this wasn't something the record label pushed but a sound they like. Genres like jazz and classical often sound better with a high dynamic range, but in pop/rock/electronic music, compression is used as a way to make things sound better in car stereos or phones, it gives the music a certain quality that makes it punchier and more exciting, it's all part of their sound is what I'm saying.

Run of mill recording and a better mix? You've clearly done your nut. Sure it's loud but it's the sound.
For me this is such as special sounding record, one of the best i've heard made this past 10 years.
Listening to Zdar talk about the nature of the mix sessions, how much they loved making it comes across in the final mix. 12/10.
