Aliexpress is going to have that PF on sale for $23 on Veteran's Day. Would be cheap Christmas presents.

Both of those beat my Lionsteel! One of them crushed my Lionsteel! You can't make this stuff up! Great test and thank you for the video.

      It's pretty bad when M390 can't hang. You're welcome.

@@Outpost_76 It is no surprise that mass produced m390 is showing lesser than D-2. M390 requires precise and fast heat treat. It is almost impossible to batch heat treat it and get optimal results. Many a custom maker makes outstanding m390-20cv and 240 knives. The first knives out of the rack and quenched will be fine. However, in batch heat-treating, not all blades get quenched at the same time. there are ways to do it, but that is an issue in and of itself.
Now about D-2. D-2 is an outstanding steel. Sadly, it is gaining a bad rep due to the bad heat treat, and poor quality of Chinese steels in general. True D-2 from reputable manufactures, and properly heat treated is a very good steel. Sadly, almost all test shown on utube are almost exclusively Chinese copies of or D-2 that vary in the steels make up and quality. It is dead wrong to assume that D-2 is a lesser steel compared to many of todays mid grade steels.
On a side note, S30v was developed to be a higher rust resistant steel that compares to D-2. Due to it being slightly more brittle, S35v was developed. However, it is less able to hold an edge than S30v. So yes, Genuine and properly heat treated D-2 can hold its own against S35V easily, and often bypasses it. No mystery there.
Sadly, it also can surpass improperly heat treated M390 while M390 knives cost substantially more. We are NOT many times getting what we pay our hard earned money for. I now for the most part avoid M390 unless by a competent Maker. Custom or Manufacturer.
D-2 from several U.S. companies such as Crucible, Carpenter and Austrian such as Bohler and Krupt in Germany are outstanding. Chines D-2 can be almost anything from just about anywhere, with the Chrome content being under or up to 12% being the guiding factor. Not what we are concerned with whatsoever

I was gifted a civivi elementum And loved it. I prefer fixed blades, but a flipper is great for edc. I then purchased the petrified fish 818 and quit carrying the civivi. The handle and blade size just work better, and the action almost feels like assisted opening. Best $30 I've spent on a knife.

Thank you for this. I appreciate it when people give chinese knives a chance. People for some reason forget the US has used China to make stuff for a long time now. I love the new Petrified fish design that is advertised as K110.

Chinese quality should be evaluated objectively, but objecting to Chinese manufacturing as a whole does have some merit. Labor laws, worker exploitation, unfair market competition, human rights violations, etc. Doesn't mean they can't produce a quality product though...

    Thank you, G.
This is a win of sorts, for sure.
I don't have any Petrified Fish D2, but do have some P.F. K110.
I have to wonder if that blade was marked correctly? While D2 and Bohler's K110 are analogous in composition. They are not usually the same when it comes actual outcome.
The reason I bring this up? Is two-fold. One: P.F. knives are now putting K110 steel on at least some of their knife models. Maybe all, going forward? Time will tell.
Bohler has moved a massive sales force into China, and all of Asia.
Two. While they may look alike on paper (D2 vs K110). D2 is being made by about 75 steel mills around the world, at this very moment. I don't think many people know or think about that. D2 is so popular, so widely used, and used in all kinds of industries. That it's made fast and hard, and the specs have a tendency to get out of range, with many of the 75-ish steel manufacturers making it. A lot of scrap iron goes into making D2 steel, for sure.
On the other hand. K110 is made by only one single company. Bohler. Very controlled, very experienced, and very precisely made. Now of course this does not take heat treatment out of the picture, by the blade maker, but sure does make for a better end product, and much more consistent when using a single heat-treat protocol.
Moral to my story? K110 is definitely a better choice, than getting D2 products from locations other than the U.S.A, and Western Europe. People would be amazed of how much 'junk D2' is being exported from Pakistan and India, to their East. Which is China. All getting marked as 'D2', and all getting mixed in together.
My suggestion would be, to test some K110 blades. My guess is, that it will test right up there with this P.F. knife you are using here. A lot of makers in China are passionate about what they do, and really do care about what they are making and presenting to the world. And Bohler is making great steel available ito them now, at very competitive prices.

A lot of the PMI scans show just that, D2 with low composition of elements. Some are lacking enough I'm not sure it should still be labeled as D2.

I'm not a fan of China d2. And I know for a fact I've been pointing that out to comments in many ganzo videos of how bad they are. Perhaps they decided to change there profile and get a professional involved in making a better heat treatment. USA d2 is capable of s35vn edge retention performance and some of them like Carothers, Krein and Doizer have above average toughness and edge stability. I see ganzo changing to less clones which is nice but I don't think they stopped completely. I will still never buy one due to them not caring about it in the past. If they make a better product that's an original design and make it affordable that's better for there client base. But the clones need to come full stop.

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

From past testing and PMI scans the China D2 is watered down. I think this juat happened to be a batch that was better in composition as well as heat treat. If I can get loaners I'd test it more but I'm not buying any to find out. I'm so past D2 and I have another video coming this week that further drives that home.
