Interesting. Buck really does do a good job with their 420. In theory, the D2 should've won, but there's so much variable. We have no idea what Ontario's heat treat parameters are for one, but I'm actually impressed with the Buck.

That was a good showdown as they both seemed to cut the same at the end....Good testing to show the blade retention....Good stuff...

Thank you Scott. I was a little shocked. But the results didn’t lie

Huh, i would have thought the D2 would have been a clear winner. I guess heat treat trumps steel 👍

Buck informed me your check is in the mail.

Its inconvenient to carry, but the 110lt is a pretty good deal. Aside from the difficulty finding a way to carry it, it seems like one of the best deals going. 20 bucks for a really capable knife, kind of like the folding counterpart to a mora. Great choice for a toolbox, tacklebox, etc

Buck does a great job with that heat treat! Great testing!!

I'm currently looking for a food prep knife for camping. I'm thinking somewhat smaller blade that will be resistant to acids and moisture but not sure if I want wide or narrow blade shape. I don't want to spend a lot, but found a couple that might be good. The 3.75" Ontario HK flat grind 420HC, Ontario 5" Bushcraft Field Knife in 5160 or 420HC or Buck large Pursuit hollow grind 420HC are some examples. I'm really digging that Ontario HK though. But how does Ontario 420HC compare to Buck's Bos 420HC is the question. Maybe I'll just relegate my Cold Steel Pocket Bushman to a food prep knife.

Does Ontario do 420hc? These are aus8 and d2. The Ontarios that is

I could imagine that Buck's D2 knives would perform a lot better in this test than their 420HC stuff. They genereally do a really good job when it comes to heat treating the blades. I guess the most important lesson of this test so far is that budget steels are of course usable even if some people on youtube tell you otherwise. However I would still say that If you want a dedicated box cutter you are better off with some of the higher end powdered steels.

My theory is you have a copy of Ontario. I made edge comparison of buck 112 with sanrenmu 8cr14mov and sanrenmu was little bit better. I can't imagine how can be D2 on the similar level as 420HC. Even my cheap ganzo from D2 did more than twice of cuts than 420HC.

Ganzo's D2 has been tested and it's true D2 steel with an HRC between 60 and 62. Their D2 is, to me, really good for an EDC use.
Buck reaches 58HRC with their 420HC, and it's very good stuff too. Reminds me of how spanish knives maker harden their 1.4116 to 58HRC with cryo. Results are quite good for these kind of steels, but it cannot compete with higher grade ones when heat treated properly. The problem is that many manufacturers do not heat trat their steels in a good way, and consumers cannot really know about it before buying a knife. If Ontario has a soft D2 (58/59HRC), then a good 420HC could be in the same range of durability.

Good test, id say that the Paul Bos heat treat took it away!! 🇺🇸

Buck runs the 420hc hard, Ontario runs the D2 soft, and they meet in the middle, lol. I have used both, and for the average knife user, both will do nicely without destroying your bank account. Very informative test.

420hc is pretty good for edc...similar to 8cr13

Thats not real d2 but some chinese substitute for d2,and heat treat isnt optimal...aus 8 in rat performs even better in tests, nevertheless pretty good knives

I did the aus8 and d2 head to head. The d2 did double what the aus8 did
