Hi C4 lovers, just an FYI when you are changing shocks and/or doing an annual lube job...... You must lubricate the fiberglass Leaf Spring tongue. 99.9% of lube shops and C4 owners don't even know this is a maintenance step. Using a block of wood, jack the outside edge to lift the spring off the lower control plate, then using a flat shim or paint stick covered in grease, swirl the grease between the plate surface and the leaf surface. This will allow the spring to effortlessly move up and down and in and out over the surfaces greatly improving the handling and ride characteristics. Good Luck and thanks for the updates!
C4 vettes came with Billsteins only if they had the Z51 performance handling package. I have it on my 86 and they ride soo rough even with all new suspension bushings. But it's the price you pay for a .92 G on the skidpad. If you put the regular option RPO shocks in it's a bit softer but not much. In 85, the Z51 package was too stiff and most all customers complained. So in the 86 Z51 optioned vette, they softened it so even the 86 Z51 was softer than the 85 year without the Z51 package lol. I've been reading too many Vette books trying to learn as much as I can about my new 86. I like it better than the 93 we used to have plus this one only has 52 original one owner miles too!!
Nice job. I put KYB shocks on my ‘87. Those deliver better handling than Monroe or Gabriel and they are just around 30 bucks each. A good deal, although Bilstein’s are OEM.
Please don't forget to disconnect the negative battery terminal when doing ANY type of electrical work to your vehicles! This includes the addition of custom EEPROMs to your ECM.
These ECM proms also make the Torq Converter Clutch applying later to improve performance ( if I remember , at about 40 mph , this chip will increase this TC Lockup speed , I was not happy about that on my car , the mpg is affected badly when driving slowly ...
@@ReynoldsRides , Nice Vette. That was my dream car but I couldn't afford it so I bought a 1989 5.0 Mustang. Good to see a mint L98 Vette still on the road. 👍
curious, what was the price of the chip? and whats the website forum for your information? I like your back roads compared to Illinois back roads....I just got am 89 convertible and im looking to replace the shocks as well. but is the chip pricey? thanks, nice video. if this is part 4, where do I find the first 3.....
Z52 package comes standart with bilstein absorbers .. :) : another interesting thing : do you have G92 option on your car ? it means Performance Rear Axle Gear Ratio ( final drive ) , ?
By all the research i have at my disposal, all of the 89,s got the Z52 package, and that included Bilsteins thats why i bought the 89, all the good stuff, and the "Atari Dash" as another subscriber on this site so aptly calls them. Mate love your stuff, LOVE the C4, anything you do, is watched and enjoyed by me,, O and i hope you have a spare room, when this virus crap is over i am coming to visit 🤣🤣🤣 what a stunning place you live in.... Is there a strip close by. ?
Nice video my Z51 has Bilstein shocks, Also you said yours runs cool, my 89 runs really hot, about 185 around town but if I were stuck in traffic it gets to 230 before the fans kick in
The C4 Corvettes were designed to run hot for emissions and fuel economy. I would only start to worry if temps approach 250*f. As long as your cooling system is maintained properly, the right mix of coolant to water, decent hoses and a working radiator cap that will maintain its rated pressure, temps over 200 degrees are normal and nothing to worry about.
Great vid, very helpful, because I'm pondering chip options for my 1988 manual coupe. Care to comment on your experiences with Hypertech, Motorvation, and PCM? The right choice of performance chip is always hard to nail down. It may be that all three are very comparable, but you never know.
I hope you don't mind the questions, I really appreciate the responses... I have rewatched your shows a bunch. For the front shocks, what amount of torque did you use for the top bolt and how did you measure it having to use the hex in place to keep the center part from rotating? FYI, I just picked up ( by chance) a 1989 Midnight Blue c4 with 54K. Sounds familiar? I too am running down your list.
Yeah i was thinking the same thing, if i just flatten mine in Drive it tears tar of the road and goes sideways into 2nd... for a car thats suppose to be only 240 hp, it goes downright friggin quick, and i been building drag cars for 54 years.
So, no constructive feedback other than this lackluster comment? Hmmmmmm...maybe try explaining what would be beneficial to see or what you were hoping to see.

I just put money down for a white 89. I can't wait to have it in my driveway.
Recently got a 94 vette and quarantine making me work on it 👍🏼
same here
That scenery is nice.
Thank you so so so much for making this series and documenting your steps. This is my next vehicle and I would love to keep it in tip top shape.
Stunning scenery where you live..wow!!! Love the C4 Corvette..regards from England.
Planning on buying a C4 in two years. These videos are great.

Get a 85

Great video like always! Being in this quarantine mind as well work on my 89 corvette as well!
Your car looks great!! 🙌🏻
Excellent video...very informative thanks for sharing it...I have a Corvette C-4 LT-4 Collector Edition.....
Wow. I want to experiende an LT-4 so bad. It’s like a unicorn. Ive owned LT’1’s, LS1’s and LS’6’s, but man, those 4’s are so unique. How is it?
Set the TPS at .67 volts.. that will be a significant seat of the pants difference in throttle response
Is .67 better? I'm at .57 ATM.
It cause pinking or too lean and possible piston damage?

My 89 had Bilsteins... I’m sure they were original. Put brand new ones on it.

Where did you get the hyperchp? I have a 1990 Corvette, and I want a good performance chip.

Did you jack up the front to replace the shocks? Looks like you did for the back to remove the tire.
No, not for the front. You can change the shocks pretty easily in the front without removing the wheels/tires.
Z51 cars had bilstien shocks.
Bilstein shocks were available on the Z52 cars as well.

My 85 (not Z51) has bilstein
Nice video my Z51 has Bilstein shocks,
Also you said yours runs cool, my 89 runs really hot, about 185 around town but if I were stuck in traffic it gets to 230 before the fans kick in
Sorry yours runs hot. I have a big aftermarket aluminum radiator and a 180* thermostat so I think that is why mine runs so cool.
@@One_Shot_Garage Ive read that 180 degree T-stats actually hurt C4’s and C5’s for that reason.
Whats your temp on a warmish type of day,say 70 degrees? On a country road at 65 mph.Did the chip affect it,if so what difference did it make?
About 180-185ish. I think my temp is running a little warmer with the chip (probably about 10 degrees warmer) and it’s mainly during city driving.

You can’t really torque the top nut. Just tighten down the nut until the bushing starts to bulge a little.
Rear shocks the rubber grommet and nut do you tighten them
What chip do u recommend for my 95 corvette and Thanks for ur help
93 octane performance chip if possible. Try PCM of NC or PCM 4 Less.
Is the chip anygood i hear a lot of negative things about the hypertech chip and the jet chip have a 1989 Corvette myself
I like chips. I’ve used Hypertech before and was happy. This PCM of NC one I have now seems to be a little better. Never used a Jet chip before.
Do the chip made a difference, can you get the same chip for the 85 tpi
Yes, my experience has been that they make a difference. Yes, you can get the chip for an ‘85.
You could try to show some shots with a mirror, like that hard to see computer under the passenger dash.
👌
How much did the Bilsteins and chip set yah back?
I think the chip was like $180 and the shocks were like $80 each.
@@ReynoldsRides nice!!!!
Where do you live, man? It's really nice country out there, wherever it is!
He says Utah in a different video
Quick question - for the chip did you disconnect the battery? I assume yes, and figure better safe than sorry.
Heard you say "reconnect the battery" all good. Thanks
Yes sir!
Can you drop a link on the chip please. I just picked up a 86 and definitely looking foward to the upgrade. Keep up the videos!

What did you do to make it louder? Doesn’t sound like the stock exhaust to me. Unless it is
To my knowledge, it is stock. I want to do a muffler delete.
The black rear shocks are most likely Monroe. Junk. Kyb are silver, Monroe black, and bilstein yellow. And the yellows are the best.
What is the song called you played before the pull?
It’s called Alaska Sky by Patrick Patrikios. I got it from the TH-cam audio library.
I understand that aftermarket chips basically just add fuel. Have you noticed any mileage difference?
I have a hypertech on my 89 GTA and only difference I noticed was shift points.
Can you show torqueing the bolts
11:43 I'm pretty sure you didn't floor it. Seemed to short shift and didn't launch...
