    This vlog goes to show that no every photography trip is successful!
    I've been wanting to see the sunrise in Tokyo for so long, however, it's so damn early in the morning that I could only do it by staying up all night, due to the train schedules! Follow my journey through Odaiba, Shimbashi, Ginza, Tokyo and Roppongi as I try and capture some night photography on the way to seeing the sunrise.
    Unfortunately, an incident at Roppongi Hills disrupted my plans for seeing the sunrise, which was an utter shame... maybe next time!

    You could've clickbait-ed the crap out of this but you didn't and i respect that. Good thing you weren't at the scene when the crime took place. Stay safe dude! :O

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks man! I'm not really one to clickbait titles. I like to keep an honest and true representation of my videos, so I'm glad you've spotted that and appreciate it! Though it would have been interesting to see the reaction if I titled it "I GOT STOPPED BY THE POLICE"...

    Every photographic outing or photoshoot is a learning experience, no matter the outcome. Chin up and hang in there. You never know, this experience could be very treasured down the track :). But what we do know is that you dodged a potentially sticky situation by not being at the scene during the actual crime taking place!

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true - At the time, I didn't quite think about how close I must have been to being involved in something. But on the way back home it suddenly dawned on me that I might have been in a very awkward situation.

    I'm really enjoying all your videos, I love the look and pace of them! The LR tutorial on organizing/importing was really helpful, it gave me some ideas I definitely hadn't thought of before (templates!!) Also glad that you included this experience too, most of photography (and life) is predictably unpredictable. I found your channel when I was getting ready to buy a Fujifilm X100F and your videos came up by search.

    I was entertained for 12 minutes and 29 seconds so I don't see this as a failure. The important thing is that you just went out and tried. It shows your passion for photography. It's hit or miss sometimes but as a great man once said, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

  • @willgotsch7292
    @willgotsch7292 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I had a photography failure today as well... I was going to wake up at 4:00 to watch the sunrise, but my body decided to sleep through all 6 alarms I had set. I then didn't have enough time to go to the beach I had planned on visiting, so I had to opt out to a more local beach. When I finally arrived at the beach, the sun was smothered in clouds, so no light shined through. It was all around annoying. But I guess this is the shit you've gotta sort through in order to grow in photography...

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    great spot to see sunrise (some clever compositions along the side where the cops are if you duck under/around). Saw it there back in Fall. McD was first thing open in morning I recall. Also a great spot to fight that spider if you're into that thing.

      Yeah I tried going round there but it was blocked around the whole way, even down the bottom on the street level. I actually saw a taxi brake pretty hard because it didn't see the police tape right across the street as it drove through it! No idea what happened though…

    I have to disagree. Maybe from the point of view of your photography, the results were not the ones you expected. You've been able to make a superb video, on the other hand.
    I guess that compared to most Western cities Tokyo is safe, but I heard that Roppongi Hills it's a place where you can have unwanted encounters with unsavory people.

    All i see was experimenting rather than failure. It was one of those video which is very genuine, real and humble despite trying to calm yourself down for missing the sunrise. You should try shooting (1am onwards) night scene in Bangkok in summer period, you'll feel like you just came out from a pool compare to just sweaty clothing HAHAHA. Anyway, i enjoy the vid. :) Good luck on your next sunrise in japan! Stay safe man

    Oh Man, There is a pedestrian bridge nearby there with a good vantage point of Tokyo tower. I believe it faces east so you could have gone there to catch the sunrise. You could have gotten some cool shots as it is over a busy street. That is one thing I love about Japan, is the pedestrian bridges. They make great points to shoot from.

    I think we all these days, I once had a whole day plan for shooting, get up early for sunrise and golden hour shots and later a portrait shoot, then in the afternoon a car shoot, wouldn't you know it the marine layer clouds came in and then it drizzled, well sunrise shot gone, my subject for the portrait cancelled due to weather and the car shoot got rescheduled.
    I ended up going into the local hills and mountains got some good clouds and fog against the mountain shots so there it is.

    Great tip on that zoom, I saw Thomas Heaton use that in a recent video, so gotta remember to try that one, but I'm curious did you see what was the 'crime' so to speak, I mean how lucky you were to not be involved in that, for Japan that's so unusual, I saw your reply to someone as you didn't find out what it was, but probably good but also bad luck for you and for others, but another time hopefully.

    How is your vlogging camera an A7rII? I mean, look at 6:22. Could you be using a very high shutter speed in your video? The low-light video looks worse than that of a high-end smartphone. Either you are not using an A7rII, or you have it at ISO 102,400. If you are actually using the A7rII, then switch it to crop mode, as that actually improves movie quality. Still, thanks for sharing your experience.

      I agree with you, the quality in low-light on the A7R II is pretty bad, especially when there's barely any light at all. It's something I've struggled with quite a bit with this camera for the 2 years I've owned it. The vlog was shot at 1/50 (@25fps) pretty constantly throughout and would have been down to f/2.8 for this particular shot and around ISO 12,800 if I remember correctly.
      Unfortunately, I can't use crop mode as I only have a 35mm Zeiss lens as a native option (need the AF for vlogging) and it would be too close for my face shots. If I knew how terribly bad this particular shot would come out, I could have switched it, but in all honestly, I didn't expect it _this_ bad. Another thing to bare in mind would be the camera trying to expose for the Canon Screen and also some bad compression from TH-cam's end.
      Either way, the information stills gets through, albeit in a shabby fashion haha!

      I was watching Thomas Heaton and your name was mentioned I took note and checked out your channel. Really like your enthusiasm. I have not watched a lot of your vids as yet but as a Fuji X-E2 user I was drawn to the X100f unboxing vid. Got the notification button pressed for new content now. Many Thanks :-)
