Not only that, in real life there is something called “explosions shock waves” even if you are 5 metres away from that wearing no explosive protection except a helmet which would be probably be penetrated. And the shock wave would put them on shock so yea... not like the movies.
Imagine shooting your battle buddy to save him from a painful death, but the medics arrive 4 seconds later. And they just take away a corpse, and your just like: Shit.
Btw. this would have been a warcrime and he would have been at great trouble for doing that. I think they did this scene to show that chemical weapons cause a slow and painful death
Ya don't shoot someone just because they are coughing a lot. I've seen people cough worse than that from a good hit of weed in college, and as slow and painful of a death that some mustard or chlorine gas victims may have had, I think statistically speaking, most who became casualties due to it did end up surviving in the long run and are probably grateful they were not mercy killed.

Cause of mustard gas not being a gas, but a hydrophobic liquid it could be used to contaminate areas for weeks. There even touching the wrong surface could be enough to become a gas victim. If you look at the casualty numbers you see a sharp rise in gas victims after mustard gas started being used on the battlefields.
