My Great Uncle was 17 when he enlisted in the US. Marines in 1917. He was a replacement machine gunner and apparently was very good and was chosen to demonstrate a new machine gun before President Wilson. His squad was rewarded with a ride on the Presidents yacht. According to letters other marines sent my great grandmother, on November 1st, 1918 he was shot in the hand but refused medical attention and remained at his machine gun post. A short time later, an artillery shell landed on their post killing 3 Marines (odd to think of U.S. Marines in France in WWI but they were there). Howard Jarrett was awarded 4 Bronze Battle Stars and 2 Silver Stars during his time in France. There is a book, "Decorated Marines of the Fourth Brigade in World War I" and he is on page 156. My great grandmother saved all his letters in a little wooden box along with her gold star armband as well as the telegram advising her of his death and the various certificates, commandant of the Marine Corps, General Pershing, and various French certificates. The marine corps thought the "IA" of Iowa abbreviation looked like "CA" (I could see it happening using a serif font and a bad typewriter ribbon) and sent his death telegram to Oakland California. Great Grandma started sending frantic telegrams when the war insurance office contacted her to pay out his life insurance policy and she hadn't heard from him in months. Eventually the marines contacted her in Oakland Iowa in 1919. The marines put her in contact with some of the soldiers from his unit (those letters, also in the box, was how we heard about him being shot earlier in the battle but refusing medical attention). He and the other 2 soldiers were buried there they fell, but as you might imagine, artillery is not kind to the body. Great Grandma complained they sent him home in a jar (I'm assuming the jar was inside a casket). He's buried in a little cemetery in Oakland IA. Great Grandma outlived everyone from her generation as well as her daughter who was caring for her and visited us from time to time. We've sent scans of all the letters and certificates to the Iowa Historical Society but lost contact with them during the pandemic, looking to find a home for the little box other than a closet here and we still have his dress blues, although they aren't as bright blue as they might have been 100 years ago. With 4 bronze battle stars and 2 silver stars he was definitely the over achiever of the family (my dad received 1 bronze battle star for ground combat, Iwo Jima). My son is currently on active duty and thinks the second silver star might have been because the purple heart didn't exist until the 1920's. Anyway, between my son and I we have posted scans of the originals and one of the letters on find a grave. My parents always thought he was killed after the war ended because of how late the official notification came, but he was killed 17 days before the war ended. He was close to making it.
The concept of ending a war at a specific time is ludicrous!! How many lives were lost in those few crucial hours? Even if they agreed on an immediate seize fire, how long for the news to get out to everyone? The last scene of the German soldier basically saying, "f-this, I'm done. Shoot me or don't"!! Very touching.
This made me think about my favourite German joke: An eight-year old boy had never spoken a word. One afternoon, as he sat eating his lunch he turned to his mother and said, “The soup is cold." His astonished mother exclaimed, “Son, I’ve waited so long to hear you speak. But all these years you never said a thing. Why haven’t you spoken before?" The boy looked at her and replied, “Up until now, everything has been satisfactory."

The concept of this short is brave. The distribution is super. But the names on th endscreen was shocking. I never thought these are not just hypothetrical could have been stories but real events.
When i was a young pastor I visited a man who had fought in WW1. He was dying and wanted forgiveness for killing a German soldier after the war had ended. He had startled the young German and the German charged him with a bayonet. The dying vet told me he chambered a round and fired point blank killing the young German. He remarked that the German had this look of shock as he stood for a moment and then fell backwards. The young German appeared to be perhaps 15 or 16. This American soldier had grieved the rest of his life thinking he should have parried and disarmed the young soldier, telling him the war had ended. Everyone who heard this story assured him he had done nothing wrong and encouraged him to let it go. However, as he lay dying in 1982, he still felt the guilt. So I shared a Scripture from 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I encourged him to confess his sin but also embrace the forgiveness. He did and wept. Now I personally did not think he had done any wrong but HE DID!. So I tried to let him pass in peace. He did.
I think the German kid probably didn't know the war was over. This man defended himself and this is not murder. But I can understand the guilt he would have. RIP to both.
I have a soft spot for soldier as my dad is a war veteran who served on the front lines. Soldiers are just people, with dreams and lives to live. Just being ordered by generals who dont care about them. I love all soldiers and those who served in the military. Respect those who died, everyone.
It's so sad that the fact that the french soldier who died was Augustin Trébuchon, this man fought in the second battle of the Marne and at Verdun, Artois and the Somme before arriving in the Ardennes. This man was alive SINCE 1914 when the war started, and he died by telling his fellow soldiers that would be "soup" when the war ended. He died because of a small mistake, he survived all of those years and the bloodiest battles of war just to die in the last day of the war.
Yes, so very sad that the country that suffered the most casualties, civilian and military, and fought from the very first day, had the last French casualty of the last day. The Americans ALWAYS forget that WW1 didn't start the day they finally decided to get in it for the reason to gan financial rewards.
Oh my goodness. What a lovely man he must have been as his fellow soldiers must have remembered him bucking everyone up with the wonderful news. Oh it's too sad. Thankyou for filling in the background. RIP Augustin.
@@Demun1649 no offense, but we dont forget, we are taught in school specifically about how we waited AND how we only joined for financial benefit. The class is called modern world history, it is souly about the history of other countries and not ours entirely

You tried to steal land from the Vichy government and failed because the great General de Gaulle sent troops to stop you. It's one of those things. As humans when we see no sign of end to an uncomfortable situation, we tend to be on high alert and develop thick skin for all the adversities that may lie ahead. Here lies the case they'd been told the war's ending in a few minutes. Being overjoyed there is a high probability you might stop thinking rationally for some few moments and within those moments as we've dropped our guard, a lot can go wrong as in the case of the unfortunate French soldier Augustine.

The scene of the German soldier firing the machine gun then bowing is actually true. The Frenchman was called Augustin Trebuchon. In fact he was carrying the soup message to the trenches, not actually there yet. The soldier killed by a sniper while his friends were drinking was Canadian George Price. The man charging the road block was in fact American. Named Henry Gunther, it seems that he wanted to display a last act of bravery. German soldiers tried vainly to wave to stop him, and to tell him that the war was over, as shown in the short. Edited to add, since I was asked : the last British soldier killed, not depicted in this video, was called George Edwin Ellison. He died one hour and a half before the armistice, pretty much in the same way as the Canadian soldier, and even in the same area. They're buried close to each other. And since the *first* British soldier killed during WWI, John Parr, also fell near the same town, he's buried in front of them. And while I'm at it, the last Belgian soldier killed was Marcel Terfve, who died at the same moment as the French soup guy, from machine gun fire. He had been promoted to second lieutenant, but had refused the promotion because he wanted to stay with his unit. Finally, the last German casualty was lieutenant Tomas...some minutes after the armistice. He walked to the American lines to discuss the condition of his withdrawal, but the American unit hadn't been informed that the war was over and they shot him dead.
@@gobindsingh8418 Gunther had recently been demoted and was seeking to regain his rank before the war ended. And it worked. He was posthumously promoted back to Sergeant and even won a medal for bayonet charging a machine gun with one minute until the armistice. Bloody stupid if you ask me.

Definitely not WW1 then since landmines hadn't been invented yet but there were some primitive ones. These mines consisted of an artillery shell being buried faceup so if a soldier step on it it would explode.
true story is that my great grandad who was a French cavalry officer during ww1 according to my father and just 7 minutes before the end of the war he got struck in the back by shrapnel he survived, but he then wasn't able to fight in ww2. incredibly lucky if you ask me

The sad part about this film is that everything here actually happened down to the details. Augustin (French) was shot in the trenches with a note in his hand that said 'Muster at 11 for food'. Henry (American) died charging an MG position as a last ditch effort to raise his rank before the war ended. George (Canadian) was shot in the chest by a sniper leaving the house of a Belgian family while clearing a village. These men really were the last casualties of their country. May they be remembered.

He did.
That is incredible. Thank you for sharing that
Wow. What a sad and beautiful story. Thanks for sharing that.

Super. Super underrated comment.
Yes, so very sad that the country that suffered the most casualties, civilian and military, and fought from the very first day, had the last French casualty of the last day. The Americans ALWAYS forget that WW1 didn't start the day they finally decided to get in it for the reason to gan financial rewards.

Thank you for the information!
I think Germans could try to just shoot at Gunther's legs instead of mowning him down that way.

He is upset
saying dont get yourself killed while sticking your helmet out seems to be a bad choice .
You wouldn't want to do that unless if you actually want to get shot in the face and the baby maker.
I don't know why I said that last part-
as well as pushing blockpost only with two people
Or shooting to and running into an enemy and MG position.
Especially if you want SOUP!
He cant tell how far his helmet is
"The war will be over in 15 minutes!!!"
"Meh..."
"There will be hot soup!!!"
"Hooray..."
Steven Bennett it will be over in 11o clock
Back then getting a hot meal was still few an far between
@@crycolsalithebeast1749 dies at 10.45
The reason it was a big deal for him it's cuz back then they didn't get free stuff it was hard even when you had to pay so for them to get free hot soup is good now shut up with the soup jokes

I have an elder in my family who was part of a war (not sure which). He stepped on a land mind… and well, you know. It’s quite devastating that these men had to endure such painful and harsh punishment of war. Now’a’days war would just be “I sunk your battle ship” kind of deal… it’s upsetting. God bless those men who fought to protect our country. ❤ may you rest in peace ❤️
Definitely not WW1 then since landmines hadn't been invented yet but there were some primitive ones. These mines consisted of an artillery shell being buried faceup so if a soldier step on it it would explode.
true story is that my great grandad who was a French cavalry officer during ww1 according to my father and just 7 minutes before the end of the war he got struck in the back by shrapnel he survived, but he then wasn't able to fight in ww2. incredibly lucky if you ask me
Shame he got hurt but luck that he did not have to go through the same painful experience twice
he got struck in the back with shrapnel, not even a bullet, yet 21 years later he still has not recovered????
@@awesomeman6948 no it caused damage to his spine but not severe, but it meant he couldnt fight in ww2
Very much agreed ❤️
Your grandfather was a good man ❤️
@@levi776 thanks but it was my dads grandfather and neither me or my dad saw him
Also, that German machine-gunner in South Belgium has class
It really happened by the way.

The final minutes of the end of this war looks far more intense than i expected
Man I can't even imagine how difficult it was for those who went through both World Wars... Imagine thinking you are so lucky to return home when after 20 years another one is declared😬
Only some WW1 soldiers fought in The second world war not many but i think 500k or something
Because also some of them are old and aging

Sept. 3, 1939:
“For the second time in the lives of most of us, we are at war.” - King George VI
“You can imagine what a bitter blow it is for me that all my long struggle to win peace has failed.” - British P.M. Neville Chamberlain
And now imagine that you get rid of the reins with the first war, and before the second war begins, everyone will betray you.
May they be remembered.
as did an unnamed German on the front fire a short burst and then take a bow as recorded in the Great War from the BBC
@X x primero no seas cobarde viniendo en español a un canal ingles respondiendo un comentario ingles para que nadie te contradiga
segundo, esa misma mentalidad que tienes empieza guerras, meter todo un pais en el mismo saco

Imagine dying one minute before all the death and destruction ends. You lived through every battle you've faced, just to die ONE minute before it's over. Sad as hell, man.

That would be the unluckiest thing ever

Yeah like Paul Bäumer did.
