my favorite genre of youtube home tours is "gay man buys an english country estate and decorates it like an 80 year old woman on acid" even if it does make me feel claustrophobic lol
Use of color is associated with a closed floor plan, so that the color stays "contained" within a definable design space. Since MCM, American homes have been dominated by open floor plans and high pitched ceilings that are hard to meld with a strong use of color, due to the size of the space, the intrusion of the ceiling into the visual space, and the way the design needs to flow through multiple use areas.
This is a really great point. I moved into my home just over a year ago and have gone a little nuts with wallpaper and pattern. I hadn't thought of it, but it's so much easier to do this in my current home (which is like a rabbit's warren of separate rooms) than in previous homes where it was hard to know how to transition spaces when they're all connected and open to each other. I'm British by birth so I come by a love of pattern, wallpaper and some *clutter* honestly since my homes growing up were always this way.
Loss of option, houses are getting smaller, so they whipped off all constructive details to it look seamless, and convinced even the rich to think of this is as a super cool feature.
If you love English country, you HAVE TO watch some escape to the country episodes. There are many REALISTIC English country homes that real people go to look at. The show has been running for like 15 years and there are lots of episodes on TH-cam. It’s my comfort TV. 😊
I've been watching that show for years and absolutely LOVE it !! I would love to visit the UK and see those charming villages in person....probably never happen so I just dive in to the show and get my fix there !!
Sometimes I think the way you can paint walls a really bright colour in the UK is due to the natural light. I’m based in Australia and the daylight here is super bright - much brighter than the UK. It’s hard to describe, but it’s just different, and so sometimes coloured walls here look trashy and loud in a way that the similar colours look warm, inviting and fun. Maybe also about weather, atmosphere and the relationship to the outside surrounds too, as we generally, even in the south of the country, don’t need spaces to feel cosy for much of the year and coloured walls can really contain a space and bring the focus inwards.
Yes you really need to be in Seattle or Portland to get the proper kind of light to make UK paints work, at least the stronger ones. Someone elsewhere going for the look should find a similar shade then go about 2 shades weaker for actual use.
I was thinking that as well. The weather can be quite dreary in those areas so the diffused light both invites fun colours and makes them look lovelier.
This is a really good point. I also find that most paint brands sold at big box stores don’t do subtle/subdued colours well. I don’t think they have the complexity of colour pigments the same way brands like UK brands Farrow and Ball and Edward Bulmer have do. To work around this, I bought a Farrow and Ball fan deck off Amazon and work with my local Porters colour specialist to colour match. She can sometimes take up to 30min working on a colour but they always come out beautifully.
I'm completely with you on the push/pull of beautiful authentic mid century modern homes and cozy warm english country cottage homes. It's like softness, warmth, colorful & layered vs clean lines and curves.
I love British maximalist style of design but to do it properly you need years and years of gathering treasures and bargain antique shopping to layer into your decor and travel enhances this way of decorating. A very famous British interior designer in his 80’s (can’t remember name) said that if you gather all the furniture and decor pieces you love and adore your decor will be always be cohesive and beautiful. We don’t have to be concerned that things match together and that the colors meld together perfectly they will mesh together to become a timeless and a statement of true style.
Exactly. And tbf most of these people are upper class, have inherited 33% of their amazing treasures, found 33% on their extensive travels to Marocco or India and were gifted the other 33% by their fabulous, wealthy friends 😅 not attainable for most. They can curate because they're secure. The average Joe with that much stuff would simply be labeled a haorder. I appreciate British maximalism from afar , though.
@@nadjak3410 Excellent point! Yes, if you aren‘t descended from Old Money and don‘t move in posh circles, your „collecting“ can quickly descend into mere hoarding. After all, there’s a considerable difference between high class connections and genteel travel on one end and mere Ebay on the other. I‘ve been wrestling with this for years.
Victorian fashion was heavily influenced by India.. fabrics, designs, prints and bright colors ofcourse. The home decor i see in some of the uk homes have a lot of style which i can tell has been influenced by India. Curtains, cushions, fabrics. A lot of older homes in India have red oxide flooring and its still very common in southern part of india. Also tv cabinet with closed doors is something what i grew up with. Almost all homes had tvs inside the cabinet either with doors or cute curtains.
Yes I've often thought this about Paige's preferences. There's a step back further in history about block printing etc that reflects UK's colonial history that many people who enjoy traditional design don't appreciate!
I absolutely love Indian design and block print and yes - due to the way India was colonised, so many of India’s designs and patterns have been stolen and claimed to be English country when it’s actually from Jaipur or other parts of Rajasthan. British decor is actually rooted in Indian design
@@starryeyed777 absolutely! Block printing has been used in India at least from 12th century and the method is 2000 years old. People who have been to India and visited palaces in Rajasthan like you mentioned or any other palaces can surely see where all the English interior design style comes from. Also, wood is something people are obsessed now in all the countries but in India its never been like a trend. It's been a way of life, all the furnitures are made up of rosewood, teak, acacia, ebony and sheesham since 14th century.
This is why I would describe the style of some of these English houses as „British Empire Style“. The guy at 11:00 showing of his collection of „exotic things“, the Chinese porcelain and obligatory 'mysterious African masks' in these houses, I mean, c'mon... xD
Paige! Those “picture bars” or areas for hanging pictures from the crown molding are important in very old homes! In old houses tte walls were plaster, not drywall. If you had put in a nail, it would have cracked the plaster. Voila! Picture rails. 🤪🤪💕💕
@@wasselpa as well as protecting the plaster, if your home is listed, there are many things you're not allowed to do, like put nails in walls that are hundreds of years old, so using picture rails is very often the compromise.
@@Print229 I was able to successfully bid on one of the paintings. The rugs were amazing but quickly climbed the stratosphere of prices, which I was expecting.
You need to watch House & Home’s midcentury home in Canada (2 years ago). The video is called “Colorful home makeover, Midcentury meets maximalist”. They have lots of art pieces w/great personal stories
I know exactly what you mean about loving both types of design - and it’s fun trying to balance mid century furniture with traditional textiles. My style concept for my home is “Bag End but if Bilbo had been a college student in the 70s”
idea: if you’re really into those curtains under the sink but don’t think you’ll ever incorporate them into your own home, you should design some as a future WAS product !
I love tiny houses, so Im obsessed with the Never Too Small channel, (my faves are Thomas Fournier's Parisian apartment, Jacobo Valentí's Barcelona home and all the episodes in Japan)!!!
Chinoiserie is something that suits both traditional (eg The Royal Pavilion, Brighton, England) and mid century (eg Bert Cooper’s office in Mad Men) interior styles.
I love you paige! I've never left you a comment but i adore your videos. Bored of vloggers and people pretending to be perfect and i just love the way your channel is so focused on the home and interiors and having a chat basically. It really makes me feel good to watch your videos! Plus, i love the little advert type thing you snuck in there about what you expect from a future spouse 😂 love, from the south of France
I live in Mexico City (been here for 20 years). I don't have specific Airbnb reco but happy to check anyone that you want to share and provide restaurant reco. Also, come in April, there are many Jacarandas and they bloom in April. Also, while the weather is good year around (70 to 80s) the most sunny weather is March to May.
You are not going to elaborate on the tomato themed birthday? I would recommend the Alexandra Tolstoy home tour on House and Garden and Rajiv Surendra's NYC apartment on Handmade Home. Thanks for all you do!
I've watched Robert Kime many times just because he was so cool, unique, laid back and fun. He was definitely one of a kind. He had a beautiful eye but most importantly, the wisdom to not take any of it seriously.
Moved into a 1920’s apartment a week ago and ran into the living room while watching this and I definitely have the molding for picture rails & hangers. Stoked.
I think you would love Krakow in Poland. It is tourist trap, but what is interesting... They have lots of bars, coffee bars, restaurants and every place is verry diferent and designed even themed. I was so inspired and amazed there. And cool airbnbs.
It was great hanging out with you and listening to your inputs on home design/decor! Im definitely more into the more mid-century modern type home, but i live in Paris which is fun because i get to mix modern pieces into an old apartment with chevron parquet and all over molding. Best of both worlds for me.
Ahhhh I lo0ve these. Some of my favorites, not mentioned: Alison Lloyd’s Hackney on 'The Modern House' channel, Will Fischer and Charlotte Freemantle on 'House and Garden', Captain Kelly's Cottage on 'The Local Project'... for anyone who wants to go down more of a rabbit hole, lol
+1 on this! Everything about her house prior to her current house was amazing! Her orangeri was so beautiful and fun. Also her parents house in sweden is 👌
Love this you do all the research and post for us. Would like to see more of this. Loads of ideas. Inspirations. Enjoyed my coffee with you this morning. Thank you for the visit. Peace!
The Modern House's sister site, Inigo, has become my new favourite. I also love Never Too Small (architects giving tours of small homes they designed in Spain, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Melbourne etc), and My Scandinavian Home sometimes features really cool homes in Finland, Norway, Denmark and Tasmania weirdly... I love a good kitchen and like to dream over Plain English and especially their sister site, British Standard which features real homes rather than showroom inspo. There's this mustard yellow kitchen that I always look at. I don't want it for myself I just love knowing it exists.
are the latter two youtube channels? becasue My Scandinavian Home on youtube has only one very short video, and plain english has nothing on design ... perhaps you are talking Instagram or websites? Modern House, Inigo, and NeverTooSmall are all great, I agree 🙂
Yes, I like you talking through the tours! It’s fun because I watched many of these tours too but have no feedback. My friends are not into design as much so it’s nice to hear you go at it with your opinions.
Love your commentary videos! I’m def on the more mid century side but I think a home without a mix of every era/style is just missing out on depth and interest! Love this, so fun ❤

I had that bright warm yellow in my college bathroom and it was so wonderful. The room was very janky and cold feeling but once I painted it yellow I loved spending time int here and having candles lit was so cozy.
The woman who lives in an artist loft/studio, the Ganni one, and the MCM one are my favorites! I also love English cottage style but in smaller doses than the more maximalist ones featured. I think the Ganni & artist loft ones do a good job of marrying English style (pattern, color) with more modern designs.
YES! OK here are my fave home tours: Rita Konig, Sophie Ashby, Gabby Deeming (all from H&G UK too), Jodie Hazelwood (Sunday Times), Christina Nielson (Homeworthy), Alvyn Wade (can't remember where, there are multiple tours of his NYC apartment on TH-cam). Also, I LOVE Barrie Benson's home tour (I think that one is Schumacher which is another great TH-cam channel for home tours). Paige, can you do a video teaching people how to prop style in their own home? P.S. Good luck on your Hinge date!
I’m very inspired by all the interiors of the English countryside homes too. The colors, patterns, curated objects, and thoughtfulness are what appeal to me most. Funny and I thought I was a minimalist! Everhouse is a great channel for home tours.
These sorts of video k-holes are so comforting and inspiring. You mentioned how it’s a good way of finding talented people - after I watched the Brooks Christmas video too many times, TH-cam told me to switch over to Skye MacAlpine’s Venetian Christmas flat, and it is a delight for the eyes. Her homeworthy tour of her London house is also delicious and made me buy some pieces from her tableware line, Tavola. Very much in the Brooks/Hall English eccentric style.
This is the most helpful video! I can’t wait to watch all these home tours and comb them for inspiration! Some of my favorite videos are the home tours from Bella Freud, Sophie Ashby, Gert Voorjans, Francesco Risso, Zoe Zimmer, Frank Portelli’s Granddaughter’s Apartment from EverHouse Love this series idea!
First, I loved today's home tours. Thank you! We are empty nesters who have decided our 2024 focus is our home. For me, the homes showcased in your video evoke comfort. These appear to be people who have decided to "settle in" for intentional living in their spaces. In our 35 years of marriage, we've moved a lot! I am so tired of subconsciously making decisions based on resale purposes. I just know I want to be able to settle in. Maybe that's my design style--settling in with intention.
Your videos are always so inspirational. After every video I walk through my house and look at differently. Sometime I am inspired to change a picture or move a piece of furniture and just that small change makes the space so much better. Sometimes I don't change anything, but just appreciate what I have and how the space makes me feel centered and calm and happy. Your amazing eye, your ability to see the beauty in a space, even when it isn't your style, truly is a gift and I appreciate you sharing it with the world!
I loveeeeee Zoe Zimmer’s apartment tour on House and Garden! More of the glam interior style than I’d do, but she has that “clean maximalism” vibe imo but the mix and color combos feel so good
I mean you might already be familiar with this but Nowness has this great series called In Residence and they have really great homes. Also Homeworthy is a little hit or miss for me but some of my fav house tours are on there (I’d recommend Michelle Nussbaumer’s home)
should have read before I posted - recommending the same things. Never Too Small is also full of inspiration for those of us who live in much smaller places
I love Homeworthy... I think many of the people who weren't watching it from the beginning go too hard about it having both DIY & professionally designed spaces, but it's been that way since she first started touring other people's homes.
Pleaaaase go to Mexico City! Would love to see what you think of CDMX architecture and design influences. My mom grew up in Coyoacan and we go back every year so that neighborhood has a special place in my heart but La Condesa and Roma are also wonderful but starting to get pricier
It would be so cute for us to "hang-out" while you check out home tours from different cities around the world, to see what they look like and what you like from all of those different styles! (all this to say that yes, we do enjoy hanging out and watching videos, it's very cozy)
This was such a good episode. Yes we want to watch these with you and listen to you talk haha. English interiors are so good and if all you want its flirting and eye contact thats also good! Also bring on Waco!
Beautiful collection of inspiration, thank you. Robert Kime was a very influential british decorator, known as a 'great assembler' of beautiful things. Very worthwhile looking into.
The picture hanging bars were installed in old homes to protect the plaster in the walls. That was also the original purpose of chair rail and wainscoting.
Homeworthy profiled designer Elizabeth Law's California home. I appreciated how committed she was to keeping the house original to it's time period (100+ year old Spanish style).
I totally agree. I love House & Garden homes too, even though my style is completely different, and I tend to switch from one style to another when deciding what kind of aesthetic I want to embrace in my own house... I think that's ultimately a good thing. It's a way to keep your mind open, fresh, and inspired. I'd love to see your apartment injected with some "European" elements. Since I'm Italian, I'd also love to know what you think about our interiors. There are some interesting videos on AD Italy that you could check.
Born and raised in Mexico City. You should definitely stay in La Condesa or Roma, packed with Airbnbs and beautiful european style architecture. You can visit San Ángel, Coyoacán and the Centro Histórico (downtown) if you like older churches and areas. You’ll love it here because you can find whatever your heart desires in terms of architecture, art and vibes, not to mention amazing food.
Mexico City is such an awesome place, is the second city in the world with the most museums, the first one is London. The city is huge, so depending on the area you wanna stay in is what you could find, I recommend Roma, Coyoacán, and Polanco, there are more areas to stay, of course, but those ones are well connected to public transport (subway). The food is amazing! Check out San Miguel de Allende, 3h away from Mexico City, I'm sure you would love it. Hope you go, hope you enjoy it, hope I get to see that video here someday.
I’d love to see a video on you reacting to quintessentially “southern” decorated spaces. There are a bunch on Homeworthy and other places. A lot of them are very maximalist and colorful and really take inspiration from the British in this way yet they’re so distinctly different. It’s also quite different from your style so I’d love to hear your thoughts and what you hate and what you love

are the latter two youtube channels? becasue My Scandinavian Home on youtube has only one very short video, and plain english has nothing on design ... perhaps you are talking Instagram or websites? Modern House, Inigo, and NeverTooSmall are all great, I agree 🙂
Same with the mustard yellow English kitchen... The one that lives in my head rent free has this dark soapstone worktop
Yes, this is great!!!
Have fun in Waco! Hope it’s warm enough!
I’m with you, I love so many things that I would not put in my home but I can admire and appreciate😊
I love to hear you talk. You’re so funny and fun to watch .
Love you, girl! Excited for Waaaaacko!
I like to hear you talk. I especially love the speed you're talking at - not too slow and not too many pauses. Love it!
I smoke pot sometimes too Paige, interior design potheads unite!
I love that your bangs are styled so differently from everyone else. They give seventies. Into it.
So many cool ideas! But also I can’t help but think of the dusting required. I feel like that’s a huge pro for the modern style, easy maintenance!

Loved this style vid. Also the bangs are really doing it for me in this one, very flattering to your eye shape and brows
I love this type of video. Much more relaxed like listening to a friend talk 😊
I had that bright warm yellow in my college bathroom and it was so wonderful. The room was very janky and cold feeling but once I painted it yellow I loved spending time int here and having candles lit was so cozy.
rabbit holes on pot are such a creative option🐦🌴🌾🌴🌾🌾🐦
I love Ganni and I watched her episode and loved it all!!
Love this video. It is fun, I like to hear you talk this much.
Please do a full video on Pauline Caulfield. ❤
Seconded ❤❤❤
Yes! I love this type of video, feels like old school Paige, keep em coming :)
I can’t wait to see what you think of Waco! Love your videos and perspective about style and design!
You're so pretty Paige! also thank you for turning me onto the House and Garden home tours, wow what a game changer
The plastic tomatoes are luscious.
Yes we like to hear you talk! I also loved the art loft tour when I watched it. PLEASE paint your bathroom that yellow
Some of my favorite videos are the home tours from Bella Freud, Sophie Ashby, Gert Voorjans, Francesco Risso, Zoe Zimmer, Frank Portelli’s Granddaughter’s Apartment from EverHouse
Love this series idea!
i feel like a curtain on a laundry room sink/counter is a great way to make that styling work with multiple different general design aesthetics!
Maybe that's my design style--settling in with intention.
obsessed with these kinds of hang out vids btw !!
Great video Paige..love your channel 😊
Picture-rail moulding. The color celadon.
I loved that. Specially because I am also obsessed with English decor.
Just re-watched Frida with Selma Hayak and I totally fell in love with her family home and her and Diego's houses which are now a museum.
Love those picture rails.
MY FAVORITE home tours are listening to your commentary while watching home tours.
Yes we like to hear you talk !
Also, it’s not too much to ask for
I loveeeeee Zoe Zimmer’s apartment tour on House and Garden! More of the glam interior style than I’d do, but she has that “clean maximalism” vibe imo but the mix and color combos feel so good
The tours were fun!! I love the picture rail idea.
LOVE nowness
Rebecca Vizard's Homeworthy tour is good, she's a textile designer is Louisiana

I've watched the Nowness home tours over and over and over again.
Yes this is what i love. I love your TH-cam episodes like these so much.❤
Pleaaaase go to Mexico City!
This was fun to watch, and also gave me some new home tours to look up!
You will love the Everhouse channel on TH-cam. Home tours based in Malta. A lot of vintage and tons of character in the architecture
agree - all quite singular and really reflect their occupants.
Yes! I visited Malta last year (from Italy) after watching some.
Hi Paige! I loved this video! It would be great if next time you could link the videos you show. Love from Argentina!❤
I love that you plus 🌿💨 & home design equals eccentric English Countryside. Something poetic about that
I enjoyed this format! Thanks for posting
You have picked out ALL my favorite videos and put them in one place.
Love the lil tangents and stories u include in ur videos
This was such a good episode. Yes we want to watch these with you and listen to you talk haha. English interiors are so good and if all you want its flirting and eye contact thats also good! Also bring on Waco!
I love this video! Very inspiring especially since I like this British material mix style. Please do some more! 👍💯
Absolutely loved everything about her home.
Sienna Miller home tour! That's a nice one for English country side. The place has an interesting story and heritage.
It’s also quite different from your style so I’d love to hear your thoughts and what you hate and what you love
ahhhhh this video gives the same vibe as your old oooold ones did, i missed it sm!!!
Dropping that you are going to Waco the last second 😮 I can't wait!
