Counterpoint: as someone who rents and will for the foreseeable future, I would like more videos on making your builder-grade apartment work. I moved from a totally run-down vintage place in Logan Square (word up Chicago!) that I was begging the landlord to salvage before the subfloor went out to a builder-grade two bedroom in Charleston SC. We moved for my partner’s job. Neither of us expected to end up here. And in a city with bonkers real estate prices, super limited supply, definitely gorgeous buildings but with all kinds of restrictions and millions dollar price tags, this unit was peace of mind against floods, pests, and apartments ruined by students. We love it. It has 10% character. We want to live here for years so we’re working with it. Would love videos for folks like us who… if we won the lottery… and could afford the insurance and dealing with the BAR… probably would be in place with “inherent character.” But that’s a lotta ifs. I love your videos and style! I work in the architecture industry though and know full well how many people just need housing… units like this are what a lot of us can access as options depending on our location and other life circumstances.
I lived in a place with a ton of character, and the mold almost killed me. Now I have new and it's healthy. I'll upgrade it, but health first from now on.
I agree, I bought a place that was a new build and I always have to work against the inherent box look of it all. I feel like rugs, curtains hung up to the ceiling, woods, big pieces of art and temporary stick on tiles can be great. Especially for a kitchen that is all white. And a little lamp in the kitchen and a rug you don't mind stains on
@@pjmackallsame! It’s not uncommon for older buildings to have mold, and for people to get sick from it. I’ll take a boring modern box any day over debilitating health issues.
Same, in the city where I live I couldn't afford any place with character (that wasn't run down and mouldy) on my own, even though I love them. It's not a realistic suggestion for a lot of people. I recently watched Paige's video on 'how to decorate your boring gray apartment' which deals with this. Hope she does more!
You can’t really avoid builder basic and not everyone can afford pre war era Haussmann building. That’s just not feasible. I think the message should be how to upgrade from builder basic so that it looks less builder basic, not to avoid them altogether considering the housing supply/crisis.
I agree. Also even though they're not very aesthetic, newer places are much nicer in my experience. More appliances, working elevators, balconies. I've had both the charming places and the new ones and while the former is way prettier, you just can't beat the amenities of the new buildings.
Yes! I need help making my very white and grey home feel more warm and inviting and charming! I have cool grey tone floors and an all white kitchen. Its just not feasible so change those out. I would love a video with tips and suggestions!!
In the city I'm living in, like most major cities, the rent prices are sky rocketing because the demand for affordable living is bigger than the supply. Tenants here don't have the luxury of calling it out or choosing not to rent a place that uses MDF cupboards. You take what you can get that is affordable and not a dump. It's not a realistic suggestion for most people. @@Silencio1126
@-Mallory- It seems like vibrant but important (liked by YOU) artwork on your backslash may help your kitchen. (A Nick idea as he noted the trend that he liked.. (Also likes lamps in the kitchen - which can really warm things up imo). Vibrant warm colors on some throws in your living room?
the wabi sabi trend feels exactly like the shabby chic trend of the early 2010s. both originate in the idea to own your furniture, tableware and decor for a long time and embrace the marks that come with using them daily. but both have been hijacked by mass production lol
Totally - feels a little extra yucky because it's hijacking a whole philosophy/approach to life and diminishing it down to be "furniture that looks a little rough" 😭
Yeah, I totally hate the idea of buying things already "worn." For one, they feel super weird and fake because the marks are arbitrary, and two, the entire point is that the wear is accumulated over _living your life_ which is what makes it warm and homey. I want to purchase a solid piece that lasts, not something crappy and superficially worn which is built to fall apart by the time this trend passes.
Hey Paige! If you're ever interested, I'd love to see a video about how to style a table or couch or bookshelf, something like that. Like putting good design into practice!
I love that tile. It’s timeless. Idk if anyone else feels this way, but being “un trendy” is also trendy 😂. This is why you should always decorate and wear styles that YOU like. You can always tell when someone has a real eye and genuinely loves and LIVEs in their home, when they decorate with what they genuinely love, no matter how trendy, how silly or how out there.
Thank you for this comment! I get it that at the end of the day it’s just someone’s opinion but please please do WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY! It’s your home, your safe place if for some reason you love everything someone hates, keep doing it! It’s your place not theirs. Again I know she actually says it at the beginning, do whatever you want. This is just someone’s personal opinion but it’s not yours and it shouldn’t have to be😊 I will say I actually agree on some of the points she made, like not doing a full on renovation (keep some of the original design and/or character), not having to have everything looking prestige or untouched. When it comes to furniture flipping I would have to disagree and agree 😅 I love a good furniture flip and sometimes it doesn’t need it at all.
I always go against the trends. Whenever Alvin says something is "out" I immediately go shopping for it. When people unload a trend they throw the baby out with the bathwater. The good stuff can sell as low as the cheapest reproduction. When people were buying French antiques I scored my neoclassical Biedermeier sideboard. When people were buying Swedish antiques I was looking for French antique castoffs and scored my chaise lounge daybed. When people were buying "Tuscan" I was buying their British colonial and scored living end tables. When people were buying mid century I got my Tuscan kitchen table. Right now I am seriously looking for mirrored pieces per Alvin's "advice."
I dont think you should delete your old videos. You had a really interesting take and to be honest a lot of the youtubers you are now acquaintances with have also changed their style! your videos are REAL! 👏
I love your approach to incremental home design rather than a full overhaul. I’m glad to move past the HGTV fantasy ideal to redo a whole space in a weekend. Your design philosophy is much more organic and practical. Also love you sharing tips from other great designers. I’ll be using a lot of these ideas in 2024.
Sometimes (and for most people) “builder grade” Is all you can afford. I’m pretty sure everybody (at least that watches your channel) would want character instead. I don’t think there is any way to stop that because it’s not about style choice it’s literally about how much money do you have which for most people, it’s not all that much.
I totally agree. It's a little out of touch/unrealistic. Builder grade isn't just gonna 'go away' if people stop renting these places (because, spoiler, they won't/can't). Rather than going 'ew, no thanks' and look away, why not have more content about how to improve them at different budget points (and in different parts of the country).
I’m low income and I spent forever trying to find an apartment I actually liked, finally found something, and the landlords yassified it right before I moved in 😭
You're not wrong about builder grade new rentals vs. rentals in vintage buildings... but as someone who has lived in both throughout my life, in multiple big cities, I can't help but appreciate that the central A/C and heating has always been better in the ugly newer ones... stuff like that matters at the end of a long day
The building grade apartments thing is really weird to say. Although I’m blessed to have purchased a traditional dc row home, where should the rest of folks who can’t afford to buy go?
with the topic of not keeping furniture pristine my high school friends LOVED my parents' house and i was surpised at first because i was kind of embarassed by some of the organized chaos and lack of new furniture but i realized that they all came from houses that had too nice of furniture to even sit on. people love spaces that they feel they can actually live and exist wihtout the anxiety of accidentally spilling a drink on the carpet.
The only thing with painting brick is that after brick is painted, it loses its ability to release moisture and dry out because all those tiny cracks and openings have been sealed with paint. This is especially bad in cold climates where lots of moisture can be trapped in the painted brick and cause severe deterioration. That's why I would be open to a white wash or lime wash instead.
On 13 December 2023, Australia became first country to ban manufactured stone use, which will be effective July 2024. This is due to the health risks of cutting and manufacturing of this material.
@@Heyu7her3 natural marble will not be banned, but man made engineered marble will be. It’s only engineered stone that will be banned due to the very high levels of silica mixed in the manufacturing and the potential risk of silicosis when cut.
The thing that confuses many people, is that something can be "classic" and a "trend" at the same time. For instance, white kitchens with subway tile are both. You can get tired of it, but even 20 years from now, those kitchens will not look terrible.
Yes. I think of it like trends and style they can intersect but I'd rather be stylish then trendy. (Yes. I just paraphrased you...but saw your comment and thought the same on this point!❤)
And let’s also acknowledge that some houses that have their original elements are charming because of them. I’m thinking about the colorful square ceramic tile in the bathroom of the mid century ranch style I grew up in. When I see a house that still has those elements in good condition, I immediately want to move in. 😍
@@theresagarza1578 Yes! My grandmother had a Mid Century house. The bathroom had gray tiles with pink tiles around the border. The floor tiles were gray. It looked perfect for a Mid Century house, but the next owner took out all the tiles and put up stone tiles that don't relate to the house at all.
Zellige tile, when done in a way that actually pays homage to the ancient way of Moroccan tiling is beautiful. The trend will pass but an art form that has been around since the 10th century will always have a place in someone’s home.
Paige/Caroline/Nick crossovers are giving me a feeling like being in a pub on vacation, one drink in. Bliss. As an aside: the squiggle and semi-pastel but also bright color palette aesthetic looks like early 90's Nickolodeon sets to me and I just can't get past that. It's unsettling. Thank you for speaking out.
I think the problem with things getting trendy, even though they look nice (like the tile) is that it begins to date your house and you start to see it everywhere and it loses its appeal. Especially if you're trying to do something unique and then everybody starts doing it. It's like listening to a popular song on the radio, the song is still good but you don't want to hear it anymore.
…or you name your baby something that sounds new and creative to your ear. Then it turns out everyone else naming a baby in that time period had the same idea and there are 3-4 kids in your child’s class with the same name. 30-40 years later it’s an older persons name and nobody would dream of giving it to a baby.
Yes to saving character in homes! I love old kitchens, bathrooms etc if you properly design around them, embrace the style. Use complimentary colors. You can either lean into the vintage or use modern pieces that work well with it. I think every decade has some design that can be worked with. Many wood cabinets just need new knobs and pulls to look more updated. An older kitchen usually fits into the older house and adds a lot of character and homey vibes that might be lacking in modern builds
Totally agree! There's an HGTV show with "2 chix" that frustrates the hell out of me. The 1st thing they do is rip out all the vintage details of the homes! It's not like they repurpose or sell any of it, they destroy everything! All that woodwork and detail tells a story and is part of the local history. It takes more imagination and talent to keep the old and work with and around it.
Decorating your bedroom first is so hard especially when you're a parent bc you just want the rest of the house to feel comfortable for your family. But we painted the bedrooms to prep to put our house on the market and I absolutely love the color we went with in our room and now I want to prioritize our room for the next house so we can have that cozy retreat for ourselves sooner.
Great video - and I totally agree with everyone! BTW - interesting fact - Australia (where I'm from/am) is the first country in the world to ban engineered stone (quartz) as of 1 July 2024 due to its damaging health affects.
I wondered if anyone else knew about this! Here we've known about it for so long it's weird to think people aren't aware of the health risks. Will be interesting to see all the alternative products that replace it
I actually found you on a recommendation from Nick Lewis (I think I've told you this before). I could watch him all day. He just cracks me up. He really should be an improv comic. He was right about you. I'm so glad I follow you now. One thing I will not be doing in 2024 is CLUTTER! I've sort of become a maximalist just because I love to shop thrift stores and I love little tchotchkes, but it's just too much now. I want to pick the best of what I have and get rid of the rest.
Love the bangs! Also love Nick Lewis and Arvin Olano. The only trend I’m thrilled is going away is gray! No gray walls, floors, furniture, or anything else! It seems like every house being reno’d on HGTV had total gray interiors. Just glad gray is going away. I’m from MI too! Born in Flint then moved to Oscoda, right on Lake Huron. I miss it.
I'm kinda going through a quarter life crisis because I'm unhappy with my job and I feel totally lost... then I heard you (Paige) say you got into interiors as a career a year and a half after college. That's the exact spot I'm at! Maybe it's a sign to try that myself. I looove interior design and always wish I had more time to spend on it and to help others with their spaces.
There is a great song call “Quarter Life Crises Hair Cut” and she sings, I think I’m getting bangs. Brittney Ann Tranbaugh is the artist; so good. Hair is also trendy and helps us feel new.
I’m so glad you mentioned worn in furniture because I’m the same way and I feel like sometimes people think that I just don’t take care of my stuff but it actually just that I love something that feels well loved and used!
I love the concept of going away from tv centered rooms without getting rid of the tv. The room is such much more cohesive and easier to exist in when the tv is not the focus. Less mental fuzz.
*so* glad you mentioned the article about quartz countertop makers developing silicosis!! it hurts my heart to see people in this day and age developing occupational pneumoconiosis (lung disease) from something we’ve known has been a problem for hundreds of years that can be prevented with respiratory protection, and i’m glad to see a design-oriented channel taking that into account when discussing whether purchasing quartz countertops is a good choice
Paige… would love to see a video on tasteful holiday/seasonal decor!! I typically stick to just seasonal florals and candles to try and avoid it looking cheesy but I need guidance!!!
Whitewash (limewash) can be built up with multiple coats to a beautiful opaque finish, and it's actually better for porous materials like brick and stone than paint. So I agree that the chalky transparent look is ugly, but I would say just to do more coats
I agree with 90% of this. Caroline's and Benji's especially. I feel like SMALL diy changes (switching knobs, restaining) can be nice but agree it usually sucks. With your 1.5 years after college comment, I was wondering if you'd ever do a video about how you got started? Would help a lot of us like-minded people out lol
The thru line on all of these is that great interior design is the furthest thing from “trendy” as you can get. None of the things mentioned in and of themselves are inherently bad from a design perspective, it’s the execution that matters. If a trend is adopted wholesale and there is no context for it (like adopting limewash on every wall when you live in New England where it has no historical context) or it’s a cheap knock off and looks like a cheap knock off …. All of the trends mentioned can sit beautifully in a space if done well and there is context and authenticity to it. I’m not ever going to avoid something because it’s a trend any more than I am going to adopt something just because it’s a trend. I either like a thing or I don’t. I like dark wood, for example, but it just doesn’t suit my space to have it everywhere. I have light wood floors but I picked them because they suit my home and what I wanted to do with it, not because it was on trend at the time. I was happy it was on trend, actually, because before that, all you could find was very dark or grey, so it made my life easier lol. Nothing wrong with DIY. Again, it’s the execution. We maybe have just moved on past buying cheap crap from the dollar store and spray painting the crap out of it and crazy gluing it into trendy configurations. Plenty of DIY still around but it’s become more about learning actual skills with good quality materials and I’m definitely here for that. Painted furniture has been around for centuries. No need to put our noses up at it. Again, it’s the execution and the context. But …. Still fun to hear everyone’s hot takes on trends 😃
If you’re going to do all marble any room, I’d be extra sure the walls and floors can handle that weight… lol just like you need to make sure a floor can handle the weight of a tub full of water, and you can’t just size up your tub without reinforcing the floor. I heard of some flippers that basically totaled this house when a tub fell through the floor and pulled the walls inwards. The whole house had to be demolished.
I’d love an updated review of lone foxes home! I think your review didn’t seem like it was throwing shade like the first video, so I wouldn’t feel bad about it! Just as long as he’s okay with it.
I agree with all of the views expressed here except for Caroline Winkler’s, cause I am a sucker for post modernism. Also, to reference Arvin, nobody asked, but a trend I am over with is gallery walls in the bedroom. I want my bedroom to be a serene and calming place, and only ample negative space achieves that feeling for me. Great video overall, love the bangs and envy your 12 course meal consisting entirely of seafood, sounds fantastic!
It's funny, I was watching an old video of yours earlier today and you told the same story about your parents not decorating their bedroom and that it should be one of the first things you do. I haven't been able to decorate my bedroom (after living in it for 8 years!) due to budget, but I bought bedside tables on Friday, and next on my list is matching-ish lamps, updating the generic posters I have to my own personal photos, maybe some art and eventually a rug. Oh and roman shades. I have standard blinds now and I hate them, I need some fabric and color in my life.
I totally agree with Kate, I'm redoing my backsplash at the moment and EVERYONE is doing the look-a-like Zellige tile. Maybe okay if you were genuinely connected to Morocco and getting the originals, but the tile stores are full of look-a-like copies to. avoid at all costs.
I lived in North Africa for a long time and wanted zellige tiles for a long time. And now I feel like they've been spoiled but I don't know what I want instead lol
I think it can still look classic if you do the square shape in a neutral colour. As long as it's not the overdone jewel tone in the long rectangle... Also they have to be genuine.
I love this video and agree with all of the points except for the builder grade apartments point... It's definitely true that so many new apartments are not aesthetically pleasing with there ugly grey linoleum floors and beige carpets. However, there is a huge need for housing all over the country. In my city, the price of rent rises every year and the number of apartments available, let alone cute early 20th century places, is very small. Just pointing it out because I've heard you talk about these kinds of contemporary apartments in a couple videos! More housing is always better!
Thank y’all for sharing that news about quartz. I read that too, although it called it “engineered stone,” and I would be glad to see your video about this to spread awareness and hear more context from an interior creator’s perspective.
Have been a follower of yours for years, Paige, and have loved your creative and no nonsense content. I don’t disagree with most of these “nos”, but as an interior designer and someone who hosts events professionally, I have to admit to being in a quandary about quartz. There is nothing that straddles the beauty of marble (almost) but with the resilience of a solid surface quite like quartz. There is nothing else that is anti-microbial, heat resistant, non-staining and stress-free, (important if you often use outside caterers). You showed some ugly quartz examples (and there are plenty of those!) but there are also truly lovely ones. Now, the very legitimate health issues are distressing. What I hope is that there can be improvements made to the process so that those of us who love and use this product with clients can continue to do so. I guess I felt the needed to stand up for quartz’ beauty and durability after hearing you throw it under the bus.
Is the Vitra uten silo? So nice those are coming back again. If you ever are in Germany/Switerland, visit their campus! It’s a design / interior heaven.
I lived in Campbell Hall!!! Albeit when I moved in my freshman year, someone was blaring Ice Ice Baby and Groove is in the Heart… so WELL before your time! I started in interior design and switched to graphic design but love both. Once design gets in your blood, it infiltrates everything you do! Love your channel!
Good news is that Australia, where I live, will be banning quartz counter tops from July next year due to the rise in silicosis in the handlers who cut and handle it. Let’s hope the US follows suit
I have a loungeroom that is centred around an old fireplace and the only place i can put my tv is inside it as all the aerial connections have been put inside it. I cant have my loungeroom any other way as its small. Im used to it now.
The bangs fit you so well! Really love that you got the input of other interior gals and pals for this video. Would love it if you filmed a holiday video with your family. Maybe decorate some cookies?
Hello Paige. I went from buying a new place concrete , soundproof & all to selling & buying a pretty completely renovated 1910 apartment -extremally charming - loved it! until my upstairs' neighbors ruined my life - music, partys! dog barking and running back & forth, above me. After 15 months of this, I put it on the market and bought myself a new construction, small unit - soundproof, gym, pool etc... I's like to if you address these issues in the future.................
Ugh yes builder grade everything in LA! I love LA and don’t want to go back to Chicago yet. The thing is the homes with character are almost always so much more expensive. Chicago has a ton of character homes
Finally someone spoke against the awful trend of the tv above the fireplace, totally agree with the bedroom being important to decorate! I feel DIY can be good for somethings.
How do we feel about (discontinued IKEA) color metal cabinets? I have this warm red one (it’s a nice subdued brown-red) which I use as a bar. I wanted it but now that I have it, I’m not sure. Sometimes it feels a little..kindergarten. But I guess, it really depends on how one styles it. I guess. Idk. Confusing.
Butcher block if you cook a lot, ceramic tile if you don't (or if you have the discipline to keep the grout clean and/or you have ceramic tile counters but also a butcher block work surface). Personally I have only ever had basic countertops ... what are they, formica? like whatever was already in the apartment or house. In my current house, they're a really dark gray-green and they're absolutely fine, like I never notice or think about them or wish I had better countertops. But if/when they need to be replaced, I would go with butcher block or tile because they're classic, practical (except for keeping grout lines clean) and I think relatively less bad for the environment than some other options.
Furniture is made to be used and your space is meant to be lived in! I do have trouble with this myself but trying to remember that “to be loved is to be changed” as they say. Also I was kind of laughing at you saying no light wood while surrounded by it, but I personally really like it!
I had a glass dining table at one time, but it was used far more often as a giant desk, so it was great for that. I now have a traditional wooden table and I have to say, I enjoy putting a tablecloth on it and decorating it in various ways, or setting the table, putting a vase of flowers on there, etc but options are severely limited if your table is made of glass. Which I is guess is why minimalists have a big glass table. Re those tiles, like you said, they are actually so beautiful, so if someone loves them, use them! We're not all photographing our houses and posting them online.
Home fashion moves so fast now. I kind of got use to it. I try to decipher what I really love and get it cheap or diy it..., I have no money😂 and I love cool old things but love new stuff too .
I was wondering if you could tell me how you would call your current interior style (what would I search for on Pinterest)? Because I feel like the style you have now is quite different from your previous home in Chicago. I think this is partly due to the house you are currently in, it looks very old-Callifonia to me (I mean that in a good way, I like it!) and I think it definitely enhances the style, but I also think your style has evolved (as it always will) over time. I just moved from a 100 year old home, to a tiny apartment, build in 1975, with a slanted ceiling (my favourite thing of the apartment!), and I am looking for inspiration! I am not from the US, so maybe it's something I am just not aware of?!
I would love to hear your opinion on the “fluted” or “ribbed” front dressers? I think they are cute if they are with natural wood and vintage but am not a fan of the painted ones, personally
omg I am so grateful for this video! Especially when you talked about not centering the room around the tv: That´s something I have seen a lot in US interior design and it´s such a weird concept to me. As well as Caroline´s, Arvin´s and Benji´s no-go for 2024. This video has validated my interior judgement haha
I noticed that Nick used an image of one of your striped pillows in his latest video. It looked beautiful. I love when you go on tangents. I need to see your Dad’s film footage!
Hi Paige. A small request. Could you please produce more bags. Every time you post a video saying the bags are available, they are sold out online for your British customers because of the time zone. Really wanted the Dumplin bag but missed out again!
What’s trippy is that I can’t see that something is a trend until it becomes out of style. Similar to clothing. I recently told my students that one day they will cringe at what they were wearing back in 23-24, and one student responded that No, we won’t because we are just wearing normal clothes.
How would you style builder grade places though... I have had to prefer more modern built places due to health/allergies. Any advice when the bones have zero character?
I was wondering if you were ever gonna bring up you criticizing Drew from Lonefox, look at him now with his Spanish duplex…you should do a video with him.
Oh it makes me want to cry when people gut whole rooms. It's so wasteful 😭 that house you and your dad did is gorgeous. I love the brick and the inspo photo and that you're going to reuse the wood! And I'm so not surprised you and Nick Lewis are friends. I love your cutting humour!
Hi Paige!! if you ever get a chance, i'd love your advice on how to decorate my mom's new house. She's recently divorced and moved into her new spot. She now has so much freedom to discover her style and decorate a place that she can call home again. She loves your videos and tends to like traditional eclectic styles, sort of like you! We would love your take :)
on apartments- problem is in finding a place that is livable and not builder grade. In LA there are a lot of choices on older interesting livable apartments but most places around the US outside of big cities aren't like that. We have old worn down and damaged units, with mold being covered up by paint and if there was some character it might be taken away halfway through your lease anyway. I was very happy when this happened to my unit because all the 10+ yr old appliances got replaced finally! but our rent went up ): We are currently house hunting- but I think with apartments and renting your first priority must be livable conditions and decent appliances.
Agreed with everything you mentioned. For me personally, I think the all white or beige room is out, high pile shag rugs are a nightmare and should be avoided at all costs, polyester bouclé, and lastly, dining tables in living rooms. I prefer to have a dine in kitchen and have the living room just for relaxing and socializing.
Sometimes people have a small game table or little bistro table in their living rooms. Usually because there’s either no dedicated dining area or because the living room is humongous and they need to fill up space. I think really large rooms are a decorating nightmare. Eat-in kitchens and breakfast nooks are dreamy. In larger kitchens, I prefer an old-fashioned kitchen table to an island. But the height of an island can be more practical when it comes to meal prep. 🤷🏾♀️
I completely agree with not centering entire rooms around your tv, HOWEVER I feel like so many people work so hard to hide their tvs and to convince others to do so aswell and its honestly become an ick of mine... I feel like those people sound incredibly pretentious and it often ends up looking horrible, like putting your tv smack in the middle of a gallery wall so that its just a huge black rectangle in the middle of an otherwise pretty wall, or buying a samsung art tv and putting a grotesque baroque inspired frame around it etc.... Like, take it easy have a simple tv on a put it on a timeless console, maybe have a sleek wall light or one piece of art around it/beside it and it'll look 100x better than all these tacky "hacks".
agreed on the glass table - just house sat at a McMansion with gray and white everything and all glass tables - is they look dirty immediately, not great for eating on in my opinion. A wood table on the other hand adds so much warmth to a space! and you don't have to see everyone's feet... :)
You reviewed Lone Fox’s home before it was finished. And maybe it will never be finished, cuz that’s his bread & butter, but it has morphed so much since you reviewed it. Also, there’s nothing wrong with a fellow interiors aficionado critiquing a friend’s home decor. At some point it’s really just a matter of differences in style. I bet Drew has no hard feelings. Your bangs are cute, and I’ve never put any stock in that phrase about unstable girls getting bangs.
Stone washing thought/question!!! In the segment where you show an example of unwashed old stone by the old/yet retro fireplace before showing your newly stoned fireplace at your parents…… notice the difference in the tones of the stone… like you can tell one is newly installed and one has lived a life for awhile… so how can we “wash….” Stone.. like your awesome new lake house stone… to look maybe darker.. more used., more sootey… like the older homes with intact slate stones…. You know?? Make sense??? I love slate and stone so much. Maybe its jsut something that has to settle and get used to be “worn in” or maybe there’s a really delicate, sheer… darker wash… to rub over top?… I’m thinking of when you put the clear coat layer onto a newly finished oil painting… all the deeper colors just come ALIVE… thats sort of what i mean.
Bangs are great on you - you are rocking it! And I would also like to see you try styling them so they go all the way across your forehead - instead of parted like a curtain. Your hair is so gorgeous and healthy looking.
A trend I would like to see die is buying everything to complete the interior right after moving in. Particularly with the decorative elements. For example buying a bunch of stock prints that aren’t meaningful to you just to complete a gallery wall. Due to lack of personal attachment it’s inevitable that you’ll want to get rid of these in the not-to-distant future. I would suggest allowing yourself to acquire meaningful items/art over time (like years). When I think of peoples homes that felt personal and interesting throughout my life, the decor was meaningful and rarely changed. I decided my aesthetic is “90s highschool art teacher” 😂.
And a little lamp in the kitchen and a rug you don't mind stains on
The South has so much old money driving up the price of cool homes. It's not fair.
She already has a video on this very topic

Exactly.
Good point! Hadn't made that connection
@@chloekpearl Oof, yes. Rachel Ashwell still haunts us all.
Hey Paige! If you're ever interested, I'd love to see a video about how to style a table or couch or bookshelf, something like that. Like putting good design into practice!
This!!
Yes! 👍🏾
I feel the same haha. It’s a similar type of vibe that a lot of “un trendy” interiors seem to have.
I love that tile too
Thank you for this comment! This is just someone’s personal opinion but it’s not yours and it shouldn’t have to be😊
I will say I actually agree on some of the points she made, like not doing a full on renovation (keep some of the original design and/or character), not having to have everything looking prestige or untouched.
Agreed! The use of these tiles goes back as far as the 10th century! They are a staple in Moroccan art and culture. Never going out of style!
I dont think you should delete your old videos. You had a really interesting take and to be honest a lot of the youtubers you are now acquaintances with have also changed their style! your videos are REAL! 👏
Agree, it's the honesty and authenticity that's so great!
Sometimes (and for most people) “builder grade”
Is all you can afford. I’m pretty sure everybody (at least that watches your channel) would want character instead. I don’t think there is any way to stop that because it’s not about style choice it’s literally about how much money do you have which for most people, it’s not all that much.
I think builder grade could have better design choices (even with the budget they have), I need to speak to the manager !!
Please do girl ❤
I totally agree. It's a little out of touch/unrealistic. Builder grade isn't just gonna 'go away' if people stop renting these places (because, spoiler, they won't/can't). Rather than going 'ew, no thanks' and look away, why not have more content about how to improve them at different budget points (and in different parts of the country).
I think we can still have affordable housing with better design! It’s all about who is making the choices
I’m low income and I spent forever trying to find an apartment I actually liked, finally found something, and the landlords yassified it right before I moved in 😭
You're not wrong about builder grade new rentals vs. rentals in vintage buildings... but as someone who has lived in both throughout my life, in multiple big cities, I can't help but appreciate that the central A/C and heating has always been better in the ugly newer ones... stuff like that matters at the end of a long day
This felt like a Christmas gathering of your interior friends chitchatting and your childhood stories added sauce to it. Very timely and fun.
I’m glad the people are enjoying!
The building grade apartments thing is really weird to say. Although I’m blessed to have purchased a traditional dc row home, where should the rest of folks who can’t afford to buy go?
The bangs look good! They’re adding volume to the top of your hair making it look nice and full and more wavy
with the topic of not keeping furniture pristine my high school friends LOVED my parents' house and i was surpised at first because i was kind of embarassed by some of the organized chaos and lack of new furniture but i realized that they all came from houses that had too nice of furniture to even sit on. people love spaces that they feel they can actually live and exist wihtout the anxiety of accidentally spilling a drink on the carpet.
Same here. We had the smallest house, but friends loved the disorganized comfort.
The only thing with painting brick is that after brick is painted, it loses its ability to release moisture and dry out because all those tiny cracks and openings have been sealed with paint. This is especially bad in cold climates where lots of moisture can be trapped in the painted brick and cause severe deterioration. That's why I would be open to a white wash or lime wash instead.
that’s a good point. you‘d still get the same all-white look with lime washing tho, right?
@@schwesi5961 yes I think so!
On 13 December 2023, Australia became first country to ban manufactured stone use, which will be effective July 2024. This is due to the health risks of cutting and manufacturing of this material.
woah
WOW. So, no more marble-topped furniture I guess
@@choochalah Great minds think alike. ha ha
And let’s also acknowledge that some houses that have their original elements are charming because of them. I’m thinking about the colorful square ceramic tile in the bathroom of the mid century ranch style I grew up in. When I see a house that still has those elements in good condition, I immediately want to move in. 😍
I feel like you can tell what era they were made in though based on the materials used, the state of the grout, the shininess of the metal
Yes, they are actually timeless.
I think it’s gorgeous. Especially in bathrooms.
100% couldn’t agree more
Paige/Caroline/Nick crossovers are giving me a feeling like being in a pub on vacation, one drink in. Bliss.
As an aside: the squiggle and semi-pastel but also bright color palette aesthetic looks like early 90's Nickolodeon sets to me and I just can't get past that. It's unsettling. Thank you for speaking out.
love the lake house chimney redo. looks great. what a fun thing to do with your dad.
I ❤ my dad
Please do an update on the lake house even if its not yet complete! :)
Will be interesting to see all the alternative products that replace it
No TV centered room-100% agree, and I also love Nick Lewis’ channel!
I miss it.
Gray floors is the ugliest invention
I miss you too ❤ loved this video. Perfect
I'm kinda going through a quarter life crisis because I'm unhappy with my job and I feel totally lost... then I heard you (Paige) say you got into interiors as a career a year and a half after college. That's the exact spot I'm at! Maybe it's a sign to try that myself. I looove interior design and always wish I had more time to spend on it and to help others with their spaces.
switch it up!! it’s never ever too late!
There is a great song call “Quarter Life Crises Hair Cut”
and she sings, I think I’m getting bangs.
No cup rings on my wood, thank you very much. Here’s a coaster . . . 😂
Only thing I don’t agree with is only dark wood, I love light wood so much. And the contrast when mixing dark and light wood is so good too
I agree with 90% of this. Caroline's and Benji's especially. I feel like SMALL diy changes (switching knobs, restaining) can be nice but agree it usually sucks. With your 1.5 years after college comment, I was wondering if you'd ever do a video about how you got started? Would help a lot of us like-minded people out lol
I love how you had your interior creator friends share and it shows how their personality comes through! So fun
😢
Builder-grade should be called "Builder Greyed". It's like colors don't exist.
OMG PERFECT
I’d love an updated review of lone foxes home! I think your review didn’t seem like it was throwing shade like the first video, so I wouldn’t feel bad about it! Just as long as he’s okay with it.
Lone Fox just finished redoing his dining room, he used a lime wash on the walls, it looks gorgeous.
I love watching you, Nick Lewis and Caroline Winkler. Now if I could just gather up the energy to put your ideas in motion!
That's so cute that your dad filmed his cooking for you! That's a very sweet thing to do even if the quality isn't great.
he’s the best
Paige, I’m 61 and adore Olivia Rodrigo!!! It brings be back to my punk music days. Love her!!
😮 I've never seen a gallery wall in the bedroom. Am fascinated with the thought of wallpaper the walls since I don't want them to be visually blank.
What are you doing instead?Genuinely asking!
@@alissahernandez8037 I haven't decided yet, but I know not that.
@hoppingwren I would love to know as well what you’re going to do for your backsplash
Caroline and Nick just put out great interior design videos!❤ Yours is great too. Thank you.
You know Nick and Caroline 😱😱😱🤯🤯🤯
My holy TH-cam trinity
The bangs are a hit!!! I like and follow Nick and Arvin.. they are hilarious! It’s always fun to hear their take!
Finally someone spoke against the awful trend of the tv above the fireplace, totally agree with the bedroom being important to decorate! I feel DIY can be good for somethings.
I'm ok with it if it's not a large TV...I blame men for being that tacky & obnoxious 😭
Many other designers have been speaking against it for years now as well.
I guess. Idk. Confusing.
Caroline's literally made me laugh out loud. YES, preach it Caroline.
If you were putting in counter tops, what would you choose? Thinking of saving up for new to us counter tops.
Paige, you always bring fresh perspectives, like how signs of wear on furniture can be seen as desirable from a certain angle.
Loved this video. love that you are all about others and collabs etc. Happy Christmas and New Year!
9:50 Where are these cabinets with the many drawers from?
Home fashion moves so fast now. I kind of got use to it. I try to decipher what I really love and get it cheap or diy it..., I have no money😂 and I love cool old things but love new stuff too .
The bangs are in fact “banging” today😂
omg Matt King once mentioned you on his podcast and that’s why I’ve been watching you ever since
I was wondering if you could tell me how you would call your current interior style (what would I search for on Pinterest)?
Love this video and the shout-out to all of these other youtubers (I follow all of them) and a sort of Christmas shout-out gift to them!
"I'm 31, and I like Olivia Rodrigo..." 😂😂😂 BTW - Paige's rings are f@%king cool.
omg I am so grateful for this video! Especially when you talked about not centering the room around the tv: That´s something I have seen a lot in US interior design and it´s such a weird concept to me. As well as Caroline´s, Arvin´s and Benji´s no-go for 2024. This video has validated my interior judgement haha
There are some mid-century modern houses (in Australia, at least) that use white-washed brick nicely IMO
I think it goes great with (some, not all) mid-century architecture.
Please tell me what is that wall unit where you put your ''junk''?
I need to know too!
Love your bangs, but I wonder if they'd like to have some face-framing layer friends (just around the front). Love your channel! Happy holidays!
You remind me of the "Wednesday" of interior design, especially with the bangs and braids. I enjoy your videos.
We would love your take :)
the stone fireplace is so good and the wood backsplash.. you're a genius
on apartments- problem is in finding a place that is livable and not builder grade.
I prefer to have a dine in kitchen and have the living room just for relaxing and socializing.
dining tables in living rooms?! that's a new one for me 😂
Sometimes people have a small game table or little bistro table in their living rooms.
The bangs look SO good! Really suits you ❤
I completely agree with not centering entire rooms around your tv, HOWEVER I feel like so many people work so hard to hide their tvs and to convince others to do so aswell and its honestly become an ick of mine...
I love the bangs. I knew you were bangable! It frames and highlights your natural, smoky eyes.
I decided my aesthetic is “90s highschool art teacher” 😂.
have a Merry Christmas! very jealous of your seafood meal! what did you study in college?
