    This is a great post. My sister had a 1985 Trans Am and that car was a blast to drive, I featured it in a short student film I did back around 1989. I worked briefly as an intern at the ad agency, (DMB&B) that had the Pontiac account and I always thought the Pontiac, "We Build Excitement" campaign was the coolest car ad campaign ever!

    Never saw this commercial back then. I Bought my Firebird in '86 brand new after a friend working at a car dealership let me testdrive one. Magnum red with black T-roofs it was. Owned it for 10 years. The FB, Trans-Am, and the IROC were some of the hottest cars on the planet back then. To say it was a chick magnet is simply not doing it enough justice. I owned a lot of vehicles in my lifetime but that blazing red FB got more compliments than all the others combined...and then some.

      The 1970-1979 are the most sought after because they sold at least a 400/403, they had that body style till 1981 not 1980. Even if they came with a dog 301, 350, 403...they can always be swapped for a strong Pontiac 400/428/455 or LS engine.

    My family always had pontiacs. When I was a kid my mom had a phoenix when she was single, and my dad had a Saab from when he was single. Later my mom got a Pontiac 6000, and later a Pontiac transport. My mom's car was a family car cuz she was a stay-at-home mom and my dad would take whatever his car was drive to work, so he got a Chevrolet S10 pickup after the Saab.
    Anyway, I was always a little sad that our family getting into the Pontiac to go somewhere wasn't nearly as cool as any of the Pontiac commercials from the 80s and 90s.

      I remember in my '93 neither the glove box light OR the console light switches actually made contact with the lids so they would never shut off. I had to modify the interior to make them work, and the switches themselves were made WAY cheaper than my 3rd gen switches.
      4th gen power windows had a lot more problems too.
      4th gen T-top seals were better, but they were also smaller due to the body change.

    This has aspects of the GTO commercials of the late 60s and early 70s. Just not the car to match the swagger. It's a sleek, sexy, under-powered slug with an albatross of government regulations around it's neck.

    Itta shame Pontiac didn't keep their own V8 line through the 2nd oil crisis, even if they used the 4" bore low deck 301 architecture, if they gave it good heads and offered the 3.75" crank as an option in a 377ci they could have really had something and they could have shared the engine with Cadillac instead of the crappy 307 and 305, they could have just akipped the 368/4-6-8 and 4100.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They couldn't, well, ok, technically they could, but the only manuals strong enough to handle the torque back than were 4 speeds and in the '80's 5 speeds were all the rage and the competition would have roasted them in their ads for still selling 4 speeds. Even the Corvette suffered until they finally dropped in a German 6 speed *truck* transmission into it.

    The commercials may have been cool, but the image that was portrayed is what sold the cars. The best Pontiacs with image and performance to back it up were built from 1960 to 1974. These were the best cars o the road bar none. Performance to luxury, all the bases were covered

      Well, maybe she's jealous, afraid you spend more time with your car then woth her. Unfortunately sometimes you have to choose between a girl or a car but you can't have both... Most advise says get rid of that girl then, don't let anybody prevent you chasing your dreams! In a relationship both need to support eachother :) Go get that TransAm man, they become rare now!
