I worked briefly as an intern at the ad agency, (DMB&B) that had the Pontiac account and I always thought the Pontiac, "We Build Excitement" campaign was the coolest car ad campaign ever!
Never saw this commercial back then. I Bought my Firebird in '86 brand new after a friend working at a car dealership let me testdrive one. Magnum red with black T-roofs it was. Owned it for 10 years. The FB, Trans-Am, and the IROC were some of the hottest cars on the planet back then. To say it was a chick magnet is simply not doing it enough justice. I owned a lot of vehicles in my lifetime but that blazing red FB got more compliments than all the others combined...and then some.
The 1970-1979 are the most sought after because they sold at least a 400/403, they had that body style till 1981 not 1980. Even if they came with a dog 301, 350, 403...they can always be swapped for a strong Pontiac 400/428/455 or LS engine.
This is one of the most awesome video/commercial ever. The short version was one of my favorite AD ever but this extended version is a blast. I don't know how to thank you!

I had mine in an 84 Trans Am and it was so easy doing the test and the maneuverability that car did exactly what I wanted with ease, the wide rear window and low stance also helped me. I couldn't drive that well in any other car I drove.
I was a teen when the firebird was popular. I always thought it was the preferred car of 25 year old guys dating 17 year olds at my school. I don't think that will ever change.

My first car was a 69 GTO, but I always loved the Firebirds too. The 80s were a styling disaster for some muscle cars (Mustang) but Pontiac and Chevy hung on to some good looks even if the engines were dictated by gas prices.
My family always had pontiacs. When I was a kid my mom had a phoenix when she was single, and my dad had a Saab from when he was single. Later my mom got a Pontiac 6000, and later a Pontiac transport. My mom's car was a family car cuz she was a stay-at-home mom and my dad would take whatever his car was drive to work, so he got a Chevrolet S10 pickup after the Saab. Anyway, I was always a little sad that our family getting into the Pontiac to go somewhere wasn't nearly as cool as any of the Pontiac commercials from the 80s and 90s.
Had several Firebirds and Camaros in the 80’s….Back in the days when the ladies were hotties and not tattooed all up with pins stuck all over themselves and the music rocked too! So glad I was able to live in those times.
I'd take that over any modern car with electronic throttle control. At least when you hit the throttle then, you knew something would happen, maybe not much, lol, but something.
@@TexasNEV Ya, 4th gens were pretty nice also. Lots of performance improvements, but the interiors and other things got cheaper. I remember in my '93 neither the glove box light OR the console light switches actually made contact with the lids so they would never shut off. I had to modify the interior to make them work, and the switches themselves were made WAY cheaper than my 3rd gen switches. 4th gen power windows had a lot more problems too. 4th gen T-top seals were better, but they were also smaller due to the body change. I met one guy who put an LS1 in a 3rd gen so he had the best of both worlds. ;)
This has aspects of the GTO commercials of the late 60s and early 70s. Just not the car to match the swagger. It's a sleek, sexy, under-powered slug with an albatross of government regulations around it's neck.
Itta shame Pontiac didn't keep their own V8 line through the 2nd oil crisis, even if they used the 4" bore low deck 301 architecture, if they gave it good heads and offered the 3.75" crank as an option in a 377ci they could have really had something and they could have shared the engine with Cadillac instead of the crappy 307 and 305, they could have just akipped the 368/4-6-8 and 4100.
Did anyone else know the trans am in the commercial would be black before watching it? I think that says a lot about the attitude and the legend of the trans am.
They couldn't, well, ok, technically they could, but the only manuals strong enough to handle the torque back than were 4 speeds and in the '80's 5 speeds were all the rage and the competition would have roasted them in their ads for still selling 4 speeds. Even the Corvette suffered until they finally dropped in a German 6 speed *truck* transmission into it.
The commercials may have been cool, but the image that was portrayed is what sold the cars. The best Pontiacs with image and performance to back it up were built from 1960 to 1974. These were the best cars o the road bar none. Performance to luxury, all the bases were covered

I think the TPI 305 had 225-230hp back then, the LG4 305 4BBl had 190hp and the L98 had 235hp in IROC Z autos.
