Scotty I have a 87 Firebird 350 formula which is just to 600 lb lighter version with no special ground effects compared to the Tran am but like that one I’m does have ac but who cars when you got the window down and the t tops off.
Since moving to Tenn. people have been bringing Scotty their cars for him to review and inspect. Moving there has re-energized him to the extreme, happy new year, sir.
This was my first car. My dad bought it at an auction for $1200 and couldn't drive it home because the transmission gave out. Drove that car everyday for 7.5 years and sold it for $800 to a guy who wanted to restore it for his son. I miss that car.
those doors were so huge and heavy! I keep looking at them and considered buying one last year due to nostalgia mostly but after the test drive of a 2002 SS model the painful reality of being too old(or at least my hips, knees, and ankles) and too fat slapped me upon trying to enter and more so the exit! If the doors didn't weigh 500 lbs a reliable as safe gullwing door mod kit could be a possible solution but more likely they would become an unintentional guillotine.
I bought a used 97 Firebird in 2004. It had 104,000 miles. It now has 250,000 miles and still runs great! The secret to making the 4l60e transmission last is to never drive in overdrive around town and service it every 30,000 miles. They are easy to drop the pan on and put a filter in.
@@jp360ford2 It will always try to save you gas and shift into the next higher gear when it is available. For speeds below 50 mph, I have found keeping it in Drive not OD helps the transmission last longer.
@NightRaven 630 i’m lookin at a 95 firebird formula v8 as my 3rd car but as a daily looking to get a daily 4 cylinder as well think i can handle it? I used to have a 305 OBS

Ive watched a lot of your videos as research on what my next car should be, and it led me to getting a 2018 Honda Civic w/o the turbo engine. The video where you're talking about the 2016 Honda Civic showed me what to avoid with Civics (turbo engine, 2015 and 2014 for cvt problems, 1.5 engine, etc. I just wanted to say thank you for your videos they were a huge help and still continue to be. I have A 1996 WS6 in polar white my Dad bought new and it was handed down to me, very cool car and pretty quick. There isn't a whole lot of them driving around these days because they didn't make very many of the limited-edition ones.
Nice ride! I got a '97 Trans Am, same color, same transmission, except mine's not a t-top and has a cam and valvetrain work done to it, but for 4500, that was the best money spent 4 years ago. I am really impressed of how well the owner kept up with it. Gotta love them 4th gen F-bodies! Never gonna get rid of mine ever.
I own a 1998 LS 1 V8. I’ve had people come to my house and ask if I would sell it. Bought it for about 3k with rebuilt engine and transmission. I got it checked by my friend who is a mechanic and it checked out. Runs perfect and has had no problems.
I had to do a paper on the trans am in college. The late 90s models. The body design was designed in Germany, the dashboard was designed in porchagal, and other stuff everywhere else
4th gens are great but 98 - 02 firebird T/As are the best. Beast engines from the box and endless upgrade potential...and pretty damn good gas mileage.
Own a 95 trans am with 90k original miles, such a fun car to drive and after doing some bolt ons and performance upgrades to the already powerful LT1 350 it absolutely moves and gets around 22mpg and compliments everywhere I take it, like it so good I bought another 01 firebird with the l36 3800 performance package V6 to use as a daily driver it's also a very nice car and fun and pretty fast as well to be a V6!!!!
I love f-bodys! I bought my 99 Z28 from a dealer in PA in 2014 for $9500 it had 85k miles. Fast forward 9 years I have 125k miles. I'll never get rid of her!!
I’m glad you showed the Lt1 version on your channel ! I bought my 94 Firebird trans am v8 last year for 5k with a 64k miles and it only had one owner (74yrs of age) so it looks brand new ! I’m upgrading the car to make more power as it’s my summer toy car ! I always wanted this car since I was a teen. Now I’m 31 with a career and finally got my car !
@@zaydqasim6740 many ppl use theirs as a daily and seem to be ok. But I can’t tell you from experience. Mine is a weekend car. I use it only in summers and like twice a week if that.
Back when I was driving my 1952 Studebaker Champion, I removed the cooling fan. This gave me more horsepower and better gas mileage. Cooling was fine all year long in Pennsylvania, unless I was in city traffic. My solution was to turn on the heater in traffic on the hottest summer days, which extracted enough engine heat to avoid boiling. And, as a young guy, I could handle 120 degrees inside the car. Those were the good old days.
my first car was a hot red firebird.. forgot what year but it was preused and a great car overall. The transmission was getting old but it never failed me ever. Wish they would bring this one back.. would be cool.
My first new car was 1973 Firebird, sure it had a few defects right out of the factory but easy to fix. Drums in the rear disc in the front. Back then the engine was easy to work on not like today. Manual transmission. Loved that car, still have dreams about it.
I got a 1993 firebird trans am all original with original paperwork, dealers panflites, spare starter key, and windows certificate. Second owner. Original owner died and i bought it off the owners wife for 5k. Had 73k miles in it. Kept it in his house. Now 80. Almost prime condition. Small rip in leather seat and crack in body panel underneath the drivers side door. Everything works except the cd player. Curious how much a car like this would go for with everything fixed.
I have a 1996 Pontiac Trans-Am, WS-6, LT1, 6 Speed trans. had 66 thousand miles on it when I bought it 13 years ago...it has 83 thousand NOW. The AC is perfect, it's fast and a lot of fun!!
Scotty, glad to see that you like the Firebird. I have a '97 that I am currently changing the lifters in. It's kind if a pain to work on but it's the best for flying low down the freeway!
i had a 2000 firebird formula LS-1 V-8 awesome car it would do every bit of the 155 mph on the speedometer wish i still had it .. sold it to my brother
Glad you kept it in the family! I have a 2001 formula that's on its last (?) legs (transmission solid, engine has never failed but could use a rebuild after 170,000 miles). It's been a pleasure to own and wish GM kept Pontiac around, or that TransAm Worldwide makes the fire chicken in a more affordable version. Had my car since new. I never hit 155 but did hit 150 once :) I'm gonna miss that subdued but confident stock growl!
Good review. I have a 2000 Trans Am convertible that I bought back in 2008. It's got 165,000 miles and still going strong. I've considered trading it for something newer, but as you pointed out it's hard to find something as much fun without spending a ton more money, and with it's high miles I wouldn't get much for it, even though it's a manual and a convertible. I'd almost rather find another one like it with low miles than spend the money for something less than 5 years old. And considering a new Camaro similarly equipped would run about $45000, I have a hard time justifying replacing mine.
I have the same problem. I bought my Pontiac G8 new in 2008 paid it off in three years. It’s been pretty reliable and thinking about replacing it with a similarly performing car until you see the $50k price tag.
I had a 2000 TransAm WS6 with the Borg Warner T-56 6 speed manual. I LOVE the LS series of engines! On the plus side the car was very tough! On the minus side it's very difficult to really work on the engine without a rack and ability to lower the front subframe.
I have a 2000 Chevy Camaro SS, 350 engine and I love it! Bought it new and it has almost 97,000 miles on it. Never been wrecked or dented but it too has air conditioning problems. That is all that is wrong with it ever! Still hits 135mph with more to give. MADE IN CANADA!!!
This man is ENDING RACISM with video uploads informing us about WHAT TRANSPORTATION TO BUY AND WHAT NOT TO BUY MAN YOU DESERVE TO LIVE A LONG PROSPEROUS PEACEFUL LIFE
I had a 96 WS 6 T/A. 6 spd. It was built on a Wednesday- not early enough in the week to have one built by hung over weekend warriors, and not close enough to the next weekend for them to be too distracted.... It was the best car for reliability I ever owned, was hard to drive on a highway at the speed limit. If I could find that same car, and it was still in good shape, I’d buy it back. Based on the way I drive, it got almost the same gas mileage as the 2 liter vehicle I replaced it with.
My 01 Y87 Firebird has 190k miles and runs great, headers, intake, catback, love this car. My daily driver since 2014! Its a 75th anniversary model too (RPO 1SX)
I miss my 99 Formula Firebird.. (made in Canada) best car I ever owned. Dealership fked it up on purpose when taking it in for free oil change. They knew I pay for whatever until I said no to the $3900 transmission fix that I knew they fked up. The dealership mechanics got caught and some did jail time. Owner 8 years in prison for 2 million stolen money. Autopia of Escondido CA. Loved that car! Vroom!
Thanks for throwing some love to the old Pontiac Trans Ams! I picked up a 2002 CETA over the summer and love it. Will keep the AC in mind as well as the aluminum radiators. Thanks Scotty!
I remember that well. I watched a video where they took an Explorer to a controlled area. They attached an explosive device to a steer tire. At a designated speed they blew the tire out. The driver knew what he was doing,& brought it to a safe stop! I think the others were over correcting, which caused them to lose control, resulting in them flipping!
I have a '95 T/A with a 6-speed manual transmission. Before they started putting ethanol in the fuel, it got about 30 MPG on the freeway. Now it gets about 24-26 MPG and about 14-16 MPG around town.
Scotty the man that knows the USA and Canada very well. This Firebird is one reason why the Ambassador Bridge has been so busy over the years. Moving parts and product between 2 countries. For US friends you have to check out Canadian Tire, so much more than a tire store. Check out one of the really gigantic ones, you can make it an afternoon long experience. Take the kids as well lots of everything including things for backyard and pool fun. As for the Firebird the car is well made, worth the cosmetic repairs. Keep smiling.
Had a 1970 GTOs 455 with 4bbl QuadraJets, gas was under a dollar. Anyway, if I floor it. It create a big cloud of smoke all the way to like 50mph, and the fuel gauge would visibly move. But it required constant plugs, points and tuning. I would work on it every weekend to keep it running correctly. My Neighbors hate me. Later had a similar Firebird like the one you mention, while engine was reliable , the interior was always falling apart, and body had dozen of noises and plenty of water leaks when it rained. May be mine was built in US.
When i was in college back in the late 90s I new I guy that owned a 1998 slp pontiac firehawk. He took me for a ride a man lwt me tell you that beast was fast for it's time.
There's a house in the neighborhood with a couple Pontiac Firebirds and a couple Camaros, all from 1970s to early 1980s. Interesting to compare those two twin vehicles side by side
Bought my 95 formula in 2009 with 64k water pump went out right away never had opti problems... I still have the car rebuilt motor and trans and still use original opti sensor with new cap and rotor. 101k on it now
My Lucy is a 2002 Pontiac Firebird with the V-6 in it. She's a base model. She is just shy of 144,000 miles. Oil/filter every 3,000 miles, tires rotated every 6,000 miles, just recently replaced the transmission filter/fluid, had to put in a catalytic convertor (in Southeastern AZ in the desert, we do not have to have emissions. :) Do a tune up every year, or when needed. She drives like a dream.
I have an lt1 car. I'm about to change the plugs and the coil and hopefully that will fix the insane misfire. I'm praying it's not the optispark, but hey, I might learn something
I have a 97 T/A bought it 12 years ago, modified, in my opinion there is not a better looking car that you can buy today, over the years I have received numerous compliments on it's looks and performance!

Beautiful car I have a 97 trans am that my dad gave me originally belonged to him I still have it
Thanx a lot! -owner
I have a 96 trans am that I bought off my grandpa, love the LT1
Good day Scotty! I had a ‘99 Trans Am WS6 with the LS1 V8, man do I miss that car! 🏁
i had a 98 Z/28 LS1 6-speed
93 T.A. LT1 with 6 speed. 65,000 miles.
Scotty sounded pretty happy with that Trans Am. Usually not the case when he’s working on a GM vehicle. Good looking LT1 for sure.
I have a Black 95 Camaro Z28 Rag top.
its a blast !
@@jayhockley8841almost bought one of those about 10 years ago. love my 2002 Trans Am 6sp.
I love f-bodys! I bought my 99 Z28 from a dealer in PA in 2014 for $9500 it had 85k miles. Fast forward 9 years I have 125k miles. I'll never get rid of her!!
I would want that car with a manual transmission. I never owned a car with an automatic. And I am really old. Child of the 60's.
unfortunately they only offered the 5.7 with an auto, you could only get a stick with the 5.0
@@callumchisholm3054 your thinking of the third gen camaro/firebirds. I have a 96ss with 6speed manual transmission.
I thought that way till my knee gave out.
Stuck driving automatics ever since.
@@callumchisholm3054 I have a trans am WS6 package with the 5.7 and a 6 speed manual transmission and comes with a Hurst shifter from factory
@@callumchisholm3054 yup, thinking 3rd gen. My 94 Trans Am GT has a 6 speed and the 5.7L LT1
Now I’m 31 with a career and finally got my car !
heads cam??
@@rebel9976 not yet. I’m upgrading other parts before that. Got front and rear sway bars. Adding wheels/tires. Then I’ll do heads and cam
hey bro I’m really new to the car scene , how reliable would u say it is and could u use it as a daily driver ?
@@zaydqasim6740 many ppl use theirs as a daily and seem to be ok. But I can’t tell you from experience. Mine is a weekend car. I use it only in summers and like twice a week if that.
I've been done with the news for a long time. Screw em
Scotty Kilmer is like that fun uncle that you look forward to seein at family reunions and talkin cars with
I had a 73 Lincoln Continental , the smoothist car I ever drove, no problems with potholes . 10mpg driving like a nun.
My first new car was 1973 Firebird, sure it had a few defects right out of the factory but easy to fix. Drums in the rear disc in the front. Back then the engine was easy to work on not like today. Manual transmission. Loved that car, still have dreams about it.
HAPPY NEW YEAR SCOTTY! I look forward to more awesome videos!
Happy New Year!
I had a 1997 trans am ws6 with the 6 speed. Definitely my favorite car I've had
Thank you Scotty for saving my sanity. Looks like a nice car from my home country! Greetings from Canada.
I own three Pontiac Trans Am i think they are good cars I also have three Camaro Z 28. They too are nice. Love your channel scotty
I want to move to Tennessee to have Scotty review my ZL1 😂 God Bless Scotty!

I did too and i bought one a year ago. It's called a '94 Celica ST
I just got a 95 firebird for 1600 and man I’m so excited
First car was an 87 Pontiac firebird. Got it for 930 bucks. Loved that car for over 7 years ! Had hardly any repairs needed while I had it ❤
Check the trans and watch for the distributor too! GM stopped making replacement parts for the Optispark.
What are you gonna get for $7000 these days? 3 Toyota Celicas if you're connected like Scotty.
i want a firebird SO bad😭😭 i'm 17 and not educated on mechanics much at all but my family is
literally my dream car
I’ve been wanting a firebird for so long. Pontiac is my favorite I swear
My favorite under the GM brand. :)
@@Kingswood7189 was afraid to say that but yes. One of the best lines from GM
Theyre pretty affordable
I miss my 99 Formula Firebird.. (made in Canada) best car I ever owned.
Dealership fked it up on purpose when taking it in for free oil change.
They knew I pay for whatever until I said no to the $3900 transmission fix that I knew they fked up.
The dealership mechanics got caught and some did jail time. Owner 8 years in prison for 2 million stolen money.
Autopia of Escondido CA.

Neighbor: “Hey, I’m going live on Facebook because I’m watching that crazy man next door who talks with his arms & makes those car videos.”
Their was a rumor that Buick was going to make the Firebird/Trans Am but it never happened.

Nice video man ! I want one even more now 🤣
Thanks for throwing some love to the old Pontiac Trans Ams! I picked up a 2002 CETA over the summer and love it. Will keep the AC in mind as well as the aluminum radiators. Thanks Scotty!
I had a 95 firebird formula, 5.7 V8. Great car!
Yeah, just try changing out those spark plugs in the back 😱😱😱😱😱
Trust me. This I do know. -owner
Yeah but how often u gotta do that?
@Batvette the manual calls for 75,000
@@richardtoth4926 so not often enough to be a big deal. Im sure with the right tools and experience its not that bad. Like a sidewinder ratchet maybe.
@battvette I’m about to do mine in the 96 Formula WS6 with 68,000 miles. Wish me luck!
My wife has been driving her 2000 Trans Am since it was new. Even the cop that wrote her last speeding ticket told her, “nice Car”.
10:00 I havent heard from Bridgestone/Firestone tires since the Ford Explorer roll over scandal
Those firebird tans ams are like corvettes with 2 extra seats and a little less hp. Pretty nice deal for the price.
Bird is the Word 💯🔥 I love my old firebird. And I’m Canadian also 😜
Hahahaha, like the song.
@@janeprescott7381 exactly , everybody’s heard about the bird 🔥🦅 😜

@@janeprescott7381 That was the Revingtons,I think I spelled it correctly! The Trashmen did the bird song, love both of them!😆
I have a '95 T/A with a 6-speed manual transmission. Before they started putting ethanol in the fuel, it got about 30 MPG on the freeway. Now it gets about 24-26 MPG and about 14-16 MPG around town.
When Scotty talks, everyone should just shut up and rev up their engiiiiiiiines 😂
Got me a 99 Firebird myself, most underrated muscle car there is.
Definitely bro i got an 84 i picked it up for 800 dollars. Best damn investment I ever made
@@caseycunningham1355 damn what a steal that’s so awesome , it’s honestly great no one cares about them, more fun for us!

Beautiful cars. I know of 1 sitting in a yard 2 kms away. Its purple color. Looks cool . I should buy it and restore it.
My friend had the WS6 package. Thing hauled!!!
There's a house in the neighborhood with a couple Pontiac Firebirds and a couple Camaros, all from 1970s to early 1980s. Interesting to compare those two twin vehicles side by side
Changed the waterpump which means the opti spark went out shortly after. The Achilles heel in those old LT motors.!
Bought my 95 formula in 2009 with 64k water pump went out right away never had opti problems... I still have the car rebuilt motor and trans and still use original opti sensor with new cap and rotor. 101k on it now
@@jaketrevino1659 A vent tube was added to the OptiSpark in ‘95 to allow internal moisture to dry out which helped longevity.

7:00 correction if you want speed 6.2L if you want speed 420hp not the 5.3L. Thank me later 😁
I have an lt1 car. I'm about to change the plugs and the coil and hopefully that will fix the insane misfire. I'm praying it's
not the optispark, but hey, I might learn something
The 3.8 V6 gets 32 mpg.
Hard to beat that fuel economy/reliability combo
Buick power
The 3.8 makes 225 horsepower too! That's more than the 305 V-8 made back in the 80's Firebird! The six has roller cam and roller lifters!
I have a 97 T/A bought it 12 years ago, modified, in my opinion there is not a better looking car that you can buy today, over the years I have received numerous compliments on it's looks and performance!
