    Miriam, what am I to do?!?! I've watched all of your lovely vidios now..I tried so hard to pace myself, to draw out the experience as long as possible; though I have to admit that sum days I couldn't resist &watched several..haha..But they're all viewed &I have to say it was a real pleasure..truly! The shorter films were all beautifully shot and very well edited..but I much prefer the longer films, especially when you talk to the camera..You're really good and your natural warmth and friendly nature illuminates the videos..You have a gentle vulnerability, a shyness that is so very endearing..They say confidence is an attractive thing, but I couldn't disagree more..Folk who are too brash &full of their own importance seem everywhere these days..So your unassuming gentleness and seeming reticence to be in front of the camera is so sweet (but we're all glad when you find the courage to do it..haha)..I bet you find compliments very uncomfortable &difficult to take, so I'll try to not over do it..But please accept my opinions as sincere, and after all, they are only my opinions; so mean nothing in the grand scheme of things..Not only do I get the sense that you like to be on your own, you openly admit it; so for you to make these films and let us, the viewers "in" to your world, a little, feels like a real privilege..To walk with you through such an ethereal landscape..&I genuinely thank you for sharing that..I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your adventures, and really do hope you film some more..I think this is one of my very favourite walks you've done..They'reall beautiful, but this is one that I would love to do myself someday..I've enjoyed having a yarn with you (all be it a virtual yarn..haha)about your films, and I hope to continue this in the future(hint, hint..more films Miriam..haha) As I said before, it's been such a pleasure..truly! 😊

      Thanks very much Tim! That’s all very lovely of you to say 😊 Nice to hear you especially liked this one - what a place to camp with no one around!! Nice to hear you’ve watched all the videos I’ve uploaded too…fair play to you!! 🤩 Yeah it’s a weird one, posting videos has an addictive quality to it yet another part of me doesn’t like it (as you’ve heard me say before 🤦‍♀️) I bore myself with my tooing and froing with my TH-cam angst 😉 We’ll see if there will be more. Something a little different I think if (when) I do something again..I’ve been mulling over something, but I’ll take my time with it. I feel a bit done with the style of recording trips and capturing the journey - in saying that, I could be eating my words and find myself doing it again very soon! It has happened lots 😎 Nice to have your support along the way anyway, it’s very supportive when I can hopefully sense someone is being genuine with their encouragement! I’ve enjoyed the banter to date too!! Cheers 😊

    What a great place and hats off to you for beating your fear.
    Last week we were on a cycling break in the Mayenne, following an off road route. It went down hill for a long way to the river Ernie. The bridge no longer existed and to get across there were massive boulders in the water. Since falling from a tree I have a lack of steadiness and getting mine and my wife's bike across left me with legs like jelly!
    It was worth it as the ride, though hard, was beautiful.
    Thanks a lot for sharing, I know making these videos is a lot of work.

      Hi Colin! Thanks for your message - Coumshingaun really is a beautiful place and I’m so glad I finally got back to visit and put those demons to rest 😉 That sounded like a challenging traverse alright - great you were able to move the bikes and hopefully the jelly legs passed quickly!! A bit of challenge is definitely nice, but those ones that push the boundaries a lot take a lot out of us ay!! Sounded like a great trip you both had 😊 Thanks for watching and your message!!

    A great wee video Miriam! It really captures both the atmosphere of the location and the majesty of the ridge. The drone footage especially was excellent. I did not realise that there were such ridge walks in Ireland. In places it was a bit scary indeed. It brought back memories of a ridge walk here in Scotland that I completed many years ago - the Aonach Eagach in Glen Coe. As you mentioned, it also is not one you should attempt with a fully laden backpack!! Congratulations on facing and conquering your fear!!

    • @MiriamKennedy

      Thanks very much Michael for your lovely message! The mountains and ridges in Scotland will outshine us a lot but we certainly do have some amazing mountains of our own. I’ve so much yet to explore over here but I do hope to visit Scotland this year to sample some of your lovely landscape! Coumshingaun is a great spot and I was so relieved that I didn’t have a bout of vertigo like symptoms again! Thanks so much for watching and your comment - I really appreciate it 👍 Hope all well for you in Scotland!

    Coumshingaun Lough looks great and a good days dander in the Comeragh Mts. Hope your heel mends soon Miriam as you couldn't be carrying those bits a plastic guttering about everyday 🤣. The drone footage is super. Loved it!

      Plastic guttering 😂😂 I know!! Hopefully it’ll keep improving over the coming weeks and I’ll never need to bring it along again!! I only mentioned it as I was a bit conscious it might have been spotted in some shots - looked like I had raided a hardware store on my way up a mountain 😂 Thanks for watching - turned out to be a great little trip and a wonderful walk. Thanks for the morning giggle 👍

    I absolutely love that hike but my first time doing it I couldn't believe how dodgy some of the sections were. Fair play for getting back there and doing it. Sorry to hear about your heel, hopefully it will be back to normal soon. As usual the drone footage was class, it really helps to show how vast the landscape is 😁

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Jason! I remember my friend saying - ‘they should have a warning somewhere’ about how difficult the hike is. I’m not sure who ‘they’ are but it’s not a straightforward climb up a hill for sure! Yeah it was great to get back there and see what its truly like as the first time around once I had that experience, it was hard for me to take pleasure in the rest of the walk as it took a good while for my body to find it’s balance and relax. Deep down I was pretty sure it was a freaky experience but that’s not to take away from the fact that it is a tough climb in places especially when you’re totally unfamiliar with it! Great to get back there again and to have the lake to myself (and the sheep). Thanks for watching the video and getting in touch, appreciate it!! Yep - delighted with how well my foot held up, just need to not go too mad thinking I’m able for everything and send me backwards. I needed that boost!! 😎👍

    What a stunning place, and well done for doing the bit that freaked you out the last time , autumn before last on my Scottish tour I was on Skye , pulled into a tiny car park at the base of a Munro called the Blue mountain...got chatting to this couple and their baby and they said oh we’re climbing it tomorrow the weather is gonna be beautiful.... so I thought maybe I should do that ( I’d no experience with mountains) , so I went back the next day and set off up the trail with some water, sandwiches and chocolate.... I was soon thinking wow all those years of collecting firewood in the woods and cycling etc. Have put me in good shape, I’ve really got this 😁 .... and I did have it going up, coming down was another story, my boots were a bit lightweight, and trekking poles would have helped a lot ... I was pretty wrecked by the time I got back to the van, but so pleased with myself that I’d done the Blue mountain at sixty seven...it was fantastic. I took lots of photos from the top 😁. Than for the video Miriam, awesome 👌✨✨👌

    • @MiriamKennedy

      Thanks David - it was great to finally get back to this lovely spot! I’ve got a big love for mountain lakes - I’m off today to the Galtee Mountains and have chosen a route that will take me to 4 lakes with a plan to camp at one of them (here’s hoping there is enough of a breeze and that midges won’t be an issue!) No cameras today - I need plenty of trips with no camera 😊 Brilliant that you got to climb Blue Mountain and to manage it safely enough - a great sense of achievement for sure!! I would love to get over to Scotland this year at some stage for a little trip (although there are still too many places for me to see here!) I got a lovely book on the Munros at Christmas which I need to look at again to inspire me to book a ferry! I was on Skye once before but it was long before I had started wild camping so I’d love to visit it again 😎 Thanks for watching this video and your message and I hope you have a lovely weekend - we’re having glorious weather here this weekend!!

    Lovely to see your footage and share your perspective/experience. I climbed up from the opposite side from you and chickened out to look over the edge because it was windy and I was alone and had no training. There's a big waterfall and I had to cross its river. When I got to the top I ate my lunch and then saw a dark cloud so I left. I climbed up on pure adrenaline but coming down was tricky. Particularly crossing the river from the opposite side and also I didn't have a satnav on my phone so I got a bit lost 😂. It was a great experience though and nobody else knows what an achievement it was for me! Thanks for the video

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Jermaine - brilliant that you got that sense of achievement, it’s a lovely feeling!! River crossings are always a pain for me and I inevitably take a dunk when I’m using rocks to cross 🫣 I can imagine it being pretty scary and dangerous on top with wind, I was lucky that there was very little wind both times I visited. Lovely to receive your message, thanks so much 🤗

    I was waiting for this. Absolutely loved that Miriam. Christ I was so Jealous. Its rare to get that place to yourself. Love it. The lake was so calm. Well done with your ankle skinny dip. @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Martin!! My ankle skinny dip 😂 Yes - that took a lot of courage, only that I had started icing it at home otherwise I couldn't have willingly taken on that challenge! The last time I camped at the lake there were other campers there - so nice to have the place to myself as you said...not many who choose to camp out in January it seems! A lovely spot for a night away having only camped once in the previous 2 months (the forest camp with myself, yourself and Jeremy). This little trip filled me up although I now know I can hopefully keep building slowly to get back to full recovery! Thanks for watching 😊

      Thanks very much Mark! Oh I know you know about injuries for sure - I remember having such sympathy when I first heard you describe your injury and the inability to get out and do what you enjoy - little did I know very soon after that I was to face into my first ever real injury in fairness! I’ve been jogging all my life and never picked up any injury but it eventually caught up with me - wear and tear finally stopped me in my tracks. I had found progress so slow and really had not expected my foot to perform so well this weekend. It was a such a great gift to be given that reprieve and to see it’s actually getting strong at last! I hope yours is getting a bit better too 🤞 Glad you liked the spot Mark - pretty special place to spend some time alright…it has filled me up for the week ahead 👍 You take care too and catch you soon!

      @@MiriamKennedy A real pleasure Miriam. Hey, were getting to that age where we have to warm up and watch how we do things or at least prepare properly. I stick my foot in a large tub at home - freezing cold water and cold pack wrapped around my hurt ankle/shin. I leave it there for 45 minutes - really penetrate the damage and then boil up some water - add to cold (just enough) and leave my foot in for another 45. I've been doing that every night for two weeks and my injury has taken a turn what with stretching etc. Try it - get a mop bucket cheap. Glad to hear the spot and time has filled you up for the week. Just the job. I will take care - you to. Peace.

    Great video again Miriam. You had decent weather to show off one of the best mountain corries in Ireland. I was there last July, but the pea-soup, low-lying clag deterred me from going up high, and I settled for a low level wander round the shore. Thanks for putting the camping location in on the OSI Map screenshot at the end!! Regards. ATB, Wadirunner.

      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jerry - a vertigo experience is very similar to fear. Having stood up I lost all sense of balance and it took hours to regain a state of equilibrium. Continuing to hike with that loss of balance was utterly terrifying is all I can say! That's what I learnt from my second time doing the loop - the experience from my first trip was vertigo rather than traditional fear. At no moment did I feel freaked out the second time thankfully 🙂

      Thanks so much Colman for your lovely comment! I’m using a Mavic Mini 2 and to be honest I feel it’s luck if I ever get a good shot. I don’t feel it’s much skill on my part at all, they’re a great drone for the size of them. The shots where it’s circling around me - they are preprogrammed functionality so I just have to press a button and don’t have to control it at all. I can’t take any credit for those at all! The pitch site was fantastic for sure - flat as a pancake and I could hear the water lapping through the night as the breeze started to increase. Loved it! Thanks for your lovely message!! 😊

    That landscape looks spectacular even in flat grey conditions ! Well done on getting back on the horse as it were. Yeah, I think most of us will have had a least one of those incidents you describe. I remember doing the traverse from An Caisteal to Beinn 'a Chroin in Crianlarich a couple of years back in slippy wet conditions. There is a short scramble through rocks, and as I am a bit of a shorta*se I couldn't initially get a handhold plus foothold to haul myself up onto a wide ledge and safely past the worst. My climbing pal has longer legs, so she had gotten up no problem having got handhold plus foothold. I was beginning to think I would have to go back, as if I had missed my grip the fall involved was several hundred feet and pretty terminal! Then I just took a few breaths, took another look at the rocks and saw a good foothold at about knee level, which gave me two purchase points, left foot and right hand. Once I had these I was confident to launch myself up to safety, but I remember thinking that at least I now knew what the outer limits of my comfort levels are, and I will not be attempting to be a Munro completist given some of the roped-up challenges involved here in Scotland! I think my phrase to my buddy was "That was more than f...... scrambly enough for me..." :) :). Sorry about the lingering heel problem. I am suffering with pretty stubborn plantar fasciitis in my right heel for the last few months. I think it was due to long walks-out on hard, rocky paths in climbing boots over the summer, but gel implants seem to help a bit. It might be a visit to a podiatrist required, but rest seems to help a lot. Frustrating, but ho hum. The pain-killing gel is a good option at the start of every walk for the moment. Another cracking video, Miriam. Thank you for your enthusiastic and inspiring work.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Jim - a 'pretty terminal' fall is a stark image alright! Delighted I headed back to this patch to suss things out - I now realise through the course of completing the walk and some of the comments that it was some sort of a vertigo incident for me...not sure of the cause but the response was completely irrational to the terrain. I don't mean that to sound like I don't experience fearful situations but I know the difference. I now realise it wasn't a fear based reaction in my mind but it was a physical response, I literally couldn't look up or stand up and continuing to walk even on a flat surface was very difficult for me. Like you, I don't have any interest in tackling really challenging things that are way out of my comfort zone - I get enough pleasure from easy climbs. Pushing the comfort zone in small ways is of course a nice and valuable thing.
      Well here's your sister on the Planter Fasciitis! I had about 3 months of warning that things weren't right but it wasn't stopping me so I was doing the recommended exercises sporadically. This continued until it really did stop me! I had two acute episodes on Dec 26th and Jan 1st where I literally couldn't put my foot to the ground with the discomfort. I got more serious about trying to address it as I've never actually been injured before....its difficult as its hard to pinpoint the real source of the problem and there are so many different silver bullets that work for others but have not worked for me. I've now begun to have confidence in some exercises that are focused on strengthening the tendons in my foot and calf. One Physio was focused on my hip alignment and another has focused on my foot. I'm trusting the Physio who has got me to focus on strengthening the foot area and has encouraged me to keep going with my life - finding my way with tolerating discomfort, ensuring I rest and don't overdo it and do the exercises. This seems to be working for me! This Physio is my next door neighbour and didn't even charge me! The night brace is great aswell - if you have that morning problem of getting out of the bed the night brace really helps me anyway. Its meant to also help the healing process also but I think the strengthening exercises are getting at the source for me. This walk was the proof for me that its working! I'm not out of the woods yet - its still there but hopefully it'll keep improving until it fexxx off altogether!
      I wish you well on your journey with it - it can be a bloody nightmare to shift it seems!!
      Thanks for your message and for watching the video - a lovely little spot to spend some time....loved just being there (and not stuck at home with my dodgy foot) 😉

I see people walking what I call 'the dragon's back', but my hands sweat and knees tremble just watching! There's usually one or two deaths every year with people blown off! I was at Pai Canyon in Thailand on Christmas Day, just over 2 years ago and there's a small section there, only about 3ft wide, with sheer drops on either side. It's also made of VERY crumbly red rock/earth! If it wasn't for the drops you'd do it with a blindfold on! It was nice to go back with a day pack and have a different experience of this beautiful spot! Wise move to head back to lower ground - when I found myself in trouble the prospect of going back down didn’t appeal at all as I knew what I was facing into, to climb the final bit was easier than face into what I had just come up. The descent on the other side of the rim is a lot easier or not as exposed anyway. Another nice vid, thank you, I’d like to do this walk. I’m glad the incident last time was put to rest. I think as we get older things that we wouldn’t have flinched at become a bit scarier, maybe it’s wisdom, but hopefully it doesn’t put us off doing the things we enjoy. I took the wrong path on Muckish a few months back and ended up on a very narrow ledge with a fairly sheer drop. It only took a few seconds to get past the section but I definitely had disco knees for those seconds. Look forward to seeing more of your trips. Cheers.

      Disco knees!! 😂 I even felt it in my stomach when you described finding yourself on that narrow ledge - sounds very humbling alright! The incident with me was long lasting, it took quite a while before my balance restored where I could feel safe walking even on flat ground. I now think it was more a vertigo incident rather than a fear thing. There’s a subtle difference in how it plays out - they’re similar, but one is maybe more physical rather than psychological. I agree about the wisdom of the body resisting death and holding on to life as we get older - or maybe we just become more aware of something that was always there! Deep questions of a Monday evening!! 😊 Hope you get to visit Coumshingaun - it’s a great adventure and I think the drone shots make it seem more intimidating than it actually is! Thanks for your message 👍

    The comfort level of this hike is very weather dependent. There's a few spots when you traverse clockwise where strong winds can make it feel quite dangerous as someone may struggle to maintain their balance. The weather is alao unpredictable. I've had winter hikes where it started off in sunshine and finished in snow and strong winds.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure - I could imagine the weather making it quite scary in spots! 🫣 Still a very beautiful spot and very glad I got to see it again without any vertigo type incident this time round 😉

      @@MiriamKennedy good to hear. That spot where you climb up on to the ridge at the back of the lake from the rocky left hand side ridge can be dicey. There's 2 paths and one involves a bit of scrambling. A friend of mine was literally huddled waiting for the winds to die down before climbing up. It can feel very exposed up there.
      It's grand once you get up on the back wall of the lake and circle around clockwise to descend to the right of the lake. And the views are amazing.

    Looks like you got a lovely calm day there Miriam. It Looks amazing! . Must admit I was wondering at the start what that contraption was hooked onto to your back 😀 I was thinking to myself what have you bought now? 😃😁 Hope the foot gets better soon!

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Pat! Yeah the Friday was really calm and the wind picked up on Saturday morning. I wanted to try get a break in the weather to do this trip with low wind and hopefully good visibility. The drone can be hard work with a strong breeze and the footage can appear choppy so I really wanted decent conditions to try capture it well. Thankfully it worked - the sun was meant to be out too but that didn’t happen, at least there was good visibility though! I had realised that the contraption might have got picked up in some shots so that’s why I ‘introduced’ it - iI’m sure anyone who saw me that day must have thought it very strange looking!! 🤦‍♀️ It works though - hopefully in a few weeks time this foot issue will be gone and the foot brace won’t be needed on the packing list again 😂 It was more precautionary as I thought I might be in bits if I did feel up to tackling the rim walk, especially knowing I’d be in the tent for so long. Thanks for watching Pat!! 👍

      Thank you Kyra! With the right gear it’s an utter pleasure to be in the tent, I love it!! I’d really missed it as I’d only camped once in December so I was dying to get back out again. I don’t sleep much to be honest when I’m in the tent - it’s not the cold or feeling unsafe, I think it’s the adrenalin of the whole experience that keeps me awake. If I’m making a video on a trip I seem to sleep less as my head is buzzing with excitement of how I’ll string it all together. I possibly sleep more when I’m not in video making mode, one less distraction playing! The body was well rested though as I was locked up in the tent for so long. Hope you enjoy the Irish Peaks book - it’s so lovely isn’t it! Hope your hiking plans and the possible overnighter work out too. You might love it - I feel like it’s a big secret that most people aren’t aware of - how great it is to occasionally be in a tent!! 😊

      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gerard! Thanks very much!! I live in Dublin too 🤩 I’m not sure when you are planning to camp at Coumshingaun but I’ve camped there twice now and had different experiences when there, both were great though! The first time was during the Summer and there were other campers there too. There are plenty of spots to get a nice pitch and you won’t be near anyone though if that was ti happen! If you are able to go mid week you’ll have less chance of meeting anyone. This time of year, you should be ok in terms of solitude too - if you do see other tents there just walk around the lake and you’ll come across other suitable spots to pitch! Have a great time when doing it - you’ll love it 😊

    Were you on a commercial flight within a few days of your first walk by any chance? Post flight temporary Vertigo can occur when pressure has not been fully re-balanced in the inner ear. You mentioned it was noticeable when you looked up. That sounds a bit like Vertigo. Happened to me a few years ago.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      God that’s very interesting - I don’t think I was to be honest though. I can’t remember when I was last on a flight!! 🤦‍♀️ It was something about pressure though as it happened after I stood up. Even though the climb was tough with my big bag I actually felt fine - standing up that time seemed to set it all off. It took me quite a while before I could start walking again. I felt totally calm in it too - I knew I couldn’t move so I sat there until I felt ready to make the final climb. It wasn’t pleasant to walk again though - I didn’t feel safe. Going back down the way I came up wasn’t appealing to me so finishing the final climb was the better option with the hope that the other side would be ok to descend. It was!
      I hope your incident wasn’t too bad? it’s only since posting the video that I’ve realised that it’s probably a lot more common than what I had imagined. I associated it with a fear inducing edge but I don’t think it was that…plenty would scare me, I know that!! I’m in no way fearless up a mountain especially with scary cliff edges 😲
