  • Hiking Adventure - 12km Coumshingaun Loop trail, Co Waterford, Ireland
The Coumshingaun lough loop is a roughly 7km loop around the picturesque lake. This has become a popular destination for hiking due to spectacular images on social media. You should proceed with caution though. The South Western corner of this trail is very difficult and can be slippy on the ascent. Most other parts of the trail are straight forward but that section alone warrants caution.

Well that's Coumshingaun Loop finally ticked off my hiking bucket list.... thanks Martin for the video, I felt I was well prepared, especially for the dragon scales, and thankfully there were no nasty surprises! WOW, what a totally unique hiking experience that I will remember forever. One of the most beautiful and special places I have ever been, still on a high from it 48 hours later!

Great video Martin thanks. I shared it to two friends. I'm an Irish bloke living in Germany. What's unique about hiking in Ireland in warmer weather is the scents and smells. The turf .... The heather .... The coconut smell of gorse in bloom .... keep the videos coming and focus a bit on the olfactory senses!

Great capture - I hiked Coumshingaun for the first time last Summer and hiking it with a backpack with my camping gear was probably not a good idea for me! Definitely a humbling experience and I felt very vulnerable at times. I’d like to do it again though, when I do it again I’ll set my tent up at the lake beforehand and have a lighter pack to negotiate the trail. Thanks for the reminder of a fabulous spot!

100% understand what you mean.. not a good place for a heavy pack especially if you have the wind with that. Your plan is exactly what I would be thinking of doing. Or hike up the right side and camp at Crotty's rock. It's stunning as well and not busy with walkers. Thanks for the comment ✌️😁.

Great video. This is challenging hillwalk. Scrambling in places and on an unmarked trail.I had planned to walk it for years as I live locally. When we walked it parking, even in off season is a problem.Walking boots, waterproofs and snacks are a requirement and always let someone know where your going and what time to expect you back. .We were surprised at seeing young children dogs and everybody bar one man waring clothing that wasn't suitable for the environment. Its amazing place and this film highlights it's beauty.Well done 👍

I did the loop with a group and I didn't fully appreciate the level of difficulty. No account really gives the full effect involved. It's not hiking. It's hiking, scrambling, climbing, scraping, coasting, sliding and slipping. How none of us was injured I do not know. I'm glad I did it but I'm also glad to say I will never, ever do that loop again. The next time I'll climb via Mahon Falls. trek over to Cumfea and around to Crotty's Rock, over to look into Cumshingaun before heading to Fauscum and back along the Mahon Falls ridge to the tourist car park. If you have any more footage of the last steep climb up to the top of the Cumshingaun loop I'd appreciate if you could post it. I remember seeing that from afar on the climb up, with people clambouring up what looked like the vertical corner and I thought there was NOOOOOOO way I was going to do that. But the alternative zig zag route was some help but not, as you said, for the faint hearted. I would love to see footage of that. My own go pro view is of my hands scrabling and griping, and the back of the heels of the "hiker" in front of me. Good video.

Have done this a few times. I was with a group yesterday and one of us got knocked over by a gust of wind at the start of the trek down the scales. So we went all the way over to Mahon Falls and descended there instead. A friend gave a lift back to Kilclooney. It's a great hike but the weather is so unpredictable. We headed off early to avoid the wind and rain forecast for the afternoon. We ended up getting all of it, thick cloud and a lot of excitement.

Sounds like quite an adventure! Dealing with unpredictable weather in the great outdoors can definitely add a lot of excitement to a hike. It was a smart move to start early and adjust your route to stay safe. The unpredictability is part of what makes these treks memorable, and it's great that you made the most of it. Happy hiking!
