Using any martial art for self-defence should include the following, •Multiple attackers •Defending against weapons •If legal in your country, learn how to use weapons •Scenario training •De-escalation skills •Awareness training •The pre and post fight •Have some understanding about your country's self defense law, just incase you have to justify your actions in court You can't simply do sparring, and expect that's all you need for self defense!
I've been teaching judo for many years and as part of the judo training I incorporate a jujitsu class or session during judo classes. I teach how to use judo techniques in self defence mode. Essentially in my opinion that is what jujitsu is. That is why my dojo trains in the traditional judo which includes many techniques that are not permitted in comps but are still part of Judo. Many don't agree with me doing this but, hey, it's my dojo...And I agree, regardless, techniques need to reflex to be efficient. Keep up the good works guys.....
An idea that's used in Gracie CTC''s, which is one person puts on boxing gloves and tries to punch the practitioner in the head, practitioner tries to execute techniques. It would be great if all Judo schools integrated this type of training.
The boxing gloves are an issue with me. I always felt that they should have ditched them and just go only with the smaller 5oz. open finger gloves or even "kempo" gloves (like what Bruce Lee used in Enter the Dragon). The latter are nice and thick, but still allow the attacker to provide a little more resistance no the defender attempting certain techniques.
@@barrettokarate At the Gracie CTC schools they only using large boxing gloves for white belt, once you move forward in the curriculum we use smaller gloves like the 5oz gloves we that we can grapple while striking.
That would be so interesting, like judo going back to Jiujitsu roots and modernizing it. Imagine if the IJF implemented it as a separate certificate program you could earn separate from the sportive side.
Thank you Chadi for bringing him on, but I have some points: 1. I told you I was attacked by a hooligan with a gun in an attempted mugging on New Years of 2020. If you want to read the full details, I am sharing my personal document which I wrote immediately after the incident. docs.google.com/document/d/1Bq5Yz0W53pKusGn09lokUzLTAD9KGtuUL5jol-EhRW0/edit?usp=sharing Technical Summery: Timing, double sleeve control, rotate him, bear hug from back, Tani-Otoshi, mount, isolate the arms from gun, full guard, rotate from full guard while legs are still controlling the gun, to back mount with my legs wrapped around his waist and the gun, to finally Hadaka Jime. But I couldn't finish him because I didn't want to kill him. I am not very good at traditional rear naked stangles as opposed to the throat chokes. 2. I cannot stand this arrogant guy. He's part of the IJF that the Kodokan doesn't like. This guy, who has zero, absolutely zero self defense/MMA pedigree is the guy who has lead the watering down of Judo. In the 1950s you could still grab legs. Now, all current Judoka who have never cross trained will get taken down by a 3rd stripe BJJ white belt who did less than five classes on double leg takedowns. Especially with pants on. I say this from experience. I had to learn how to do a proper sprawl from videos by olympic wrestlers. Shido this, shido that. Let them fight. Neil is no authority on Judo. He's just a jock who ranked up. He's not even good sport Judo let alone the full spectrum of combat Judo. Neil has invented nothing relevant in sport Judo. He's not an academic like Kano Sensei. I don't know if he even went to college. Kano at 22 was significantly more intelligent than this guy. In that same token Jon Jones is significantly more relevant than Adams. If anyone thinks Neil is a tough guy, let him fight Rickson. Same age and size. Let's see who comes out alive. Age means nothing, and raw experience means nothing. It comes down to philosophy. That's why people like Marcelo Garcia and John Danaher are so effective. Danaher as egotistical as he is, is actually super smart. Neil is nowhere near that level. So I find it incredibly offensive that such a person holds such a high position in the IJF. He's not qualified. And the Kodokan know it. 3. Sport Judo is not real combat Judo. It isn't even 20% of real combat Judo. Someone who understood this profoundly was the founder of Shotokan Aikido, Kenji Tomiki sensei. The objective of sport judo is to throw as hard as possible. Basically it's wrestling with jackets, and scores in a similar way to how freestyle wrestling is scored. 5 points is like an Ippon etc. In real life the objectives are absolutely different. In real life fighting, and I say this as someone who survived getting killed by a gun, is : 1. Control the weapon. That means controlling the hands that control the weapon. 2. Do not fight face to face. Optimally the back is the best place to fight. 3. Control the body. That means eventually getting to mount/back mount/side control etc. 4. Finish the fight. Practice strangles. All of the throat chokes and limb breaking is useless. You must turn off their brain. Turn off their brain, then you can control the weapon, wrap them call the cops etc. Sport Judo: You cannot bear hug. You cannot hold onto the back. etc. The objectives of sport judo is spectacle and athleticism. It's a thing to strive for. Real combat life or death... stay alive. That's it. Don't let him stab or shoot you. The end. It doesn't have to be beautiful. It has to be efficient. Tomiki understood this. All classical JuJutsu is based on hand control. That's why Daito Ryu AikiJuJutsu, the real combat version of Aikido, is all about controlling the hands. Control the hands that wants to grab a weapon. The grips we learn on day one in sport judo, the symmetrical lapel and sleeve at the elbow is absolute trash. It's a stupid position. It's something meant for training purposes, but for real fighting, it's a stupid position. The same way berimbolo is a stupid position for real life fighting. Goshin Jutsu needs to be developed. It's a joke in it's current status. It needs to be practiced on a weekly basis. Get your buddies in the gym. Wear your normal clothes street clothes and hoodie. And try to kill each other with dummy weapons. That's the only way to learn. That's how I stayed alive. Thank God. Because I used to make trips to my BJJ pals hours away from where I lived, and the move I used to stay alive was shown to me in one of those "self defense" classes. Chadi. I like your videos. My grudge against Neil is not a personal one, but a Judo one. He shouldn't hold such a high position in the IJF. In fact the IJF is a joke. IJF Judo deviates from Kodokan Judo every single year. Neil can keep his Olympic and world medals, I survived a gun shooting. My reward of staying alive can never be matched by medals. 4. My opinion is just like wrestling has two main styles, Freestyle and Greco-Roman, Judo should have multiple competition formats. We already have three. Russian Judo also known as SAMBO, Brazilian Judo known as BJJ, and IJF Judo. We should have Goshin Jutsu Judo, which focuses on the combat aspects. There have been attempts at this, but they aren't popular for some reason. Kenji Tomiki Sensei (Aikido/Judo) made shotokan Aikido. It isn't popular. But dance dance Aikido is for some reason. Then very interestingly, Takashi Azuma Sensei (Karate/Judo) founded Kudo the early 80s, which was essentially MMA/Combat Sambo. It wasn't popular, even though today MMA is the fastest growing sport. There should be a competition format that focuses on the types of scenarios in our modern lives. Not how to defend against swords or a spear like classical JuJutsu, but guns and knives. MMA/Combat Sambo has hand to hand 1-on-1 combat already covered. The weapons aspect, and policing subduing without hurting someone aspect are parts that are still neglected by the martial arts community. Stay safe guys, and practice with a self defense philosophy, not a point based sporting philosophy.

Mr. Adams - "30 seconds...40 seconds ... and it's over " . I could listen to Chadi and Neil talk about street fighting for hours and I'm seeing more and more practitioners of various styles questioning the efficacy of their chosen path as it applies to actual street fighting and not simply sport . Excellent video Chadi . Another for the history books . Thanks again .
Honestly, what does Neil know about street fighting? He uses second-hand knowledge instead of his own experiences. He's wrong. It's not always 40 seconds. My fight against an armed mugger was longer than half an hour until the police arrived. You can watch street fights and muggings here on youtube instead of speculating on what street fights might look like. Neil's red belt in Judo is as relevant at the shopping mall Tae Kwon Do coach when it comes to no-rules life and death fighting. He's not a source of information.
Chadi - adding basic atemi in combination to randori judo is a strong package. Adding techniques from Kime no kata is next. Beyond that you just refine
