Just so you know - these vids are still being appreciated! I haven't played ASLSK for a couple of years, so am using this as a refresher. It was a great help when I was learning the first time round, too!
I got into ASL by the earlier version Squad Leader. I used to stay up all night learning it listening to jazz on the radio. I eventually graduated to Advanced Squad Leader. The detail is immense.
Thanks very much for taking the time to do this series. It’s an exceptional aid for someone like myself just starting out with asl starter kit. It has helped me no end to cement the rules in my head.
I'm just getting into Advanced Squad Leader, and this gameplay is so helpful. Really appreciate how methodical you were, and your explanations. Thanks!!
Excellent play through for newcomers, thanks very much. Very clear and methodical practical explanation of the rules - without a script but managing to explain some fairly complicated stuff with hardly an 'erm' or a pause. Top marks.
Really enjoyed the video. Learning ASLSK and this was a real help. As a newbie to this game, there are so many rules that can get missed. I was unclear about a few and your video helped clarify that. Please put post more as you learn the game...ordnance and tanks. Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video. I probably would have shelved this game without it. I read a lot of positive reviews of this game on boardgamegeek, some people said 'best game ever'. I just got the starter kit today. Excitedly opened up the box, separated the counters, placed the units on the board for this scenario. Then I couldn't understand the rulebook at all. There's just too many reactions to everything each unit does to even start to know what to do. I'll probably need to watch this and the next videos a couple of times before I try to play it again.
Well done sir! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I've watched your Beyond Valor Module videos and enjoyed them as well. I am getting into Advanced Squad Leader and it has helped in the process. I've had Starter Kit #1 since 2018 and this is 2020 so I'm late. (I've tried many times but got distracted by other things in life). I'm excited for my journey (especially with the fact I got Starter Kit #3 today.) Please make more ASL videos. I'd really enjoy watching them.
Good luck with the learning of ASL ! It's a great game. I'm currently learning full rules and with some plays with experienced players it goes pretty well.

Thanks for the videos! Someone who explains s1 well!
59:48 In CC, a Pinned unit's FP is only halved for the fire he puts out, not for the fire he receives, so the ratio US:German would be 7-5 (1-1), not 3-1. Your '4' DR would still kill the Germans though.
at ~47:00, the 7-4-7 advanced firing into N6 is not on the 6 column but on the 8 column (halved, then doubled, then +1 for assault bonus (underline FP)).
and since that 7-4-7 cowered on First Fire... doesn't it immediately cause a Final Fire counter to be placed on it thereby negating it's ability to Subsequent First Fire (therefore no second PTC on the 7-0 leader)?
German squad in N6 missed the opportunity for Subsequent First Fire. Both American squads used 2MF to move into the buildings and could be fired at twice. So First Fire at squad in M6, Final Fire at squad in N5 and Subsequent First Fire at N5 because he's adjacent.
Hi, I have been watching this vid as I have just been learning the rules and yet to play. Its been pretty good so far, but I noticed on your very first shot at about 18 mins or so, the US Squad rolled a 2 & 2. As doubles, I think they would have cowered and fired on the 4col instead of 6col. This means that the German attackers would have received a PTC and not NMC. Anyway, on with the vid and I'll get back later :-)
Really enjoyed video - one point - At 40 min in - A 7-4-7 unit moves from l5 to m6 - you say that as it is a stack all units must fire as a fire-group. My understanding is for a stack, if a number of units fire at the same target then a fire group must be used for those firing units. But you can split the stack (for firing) and one unit can fire at one target i.e. the one that just moved, but the other unit can hold fire and later fire at a different unit (The officer, can join with either unit). This would have allowed the `Germans a better defence against the first American moves.
Yup. It's on p6 at the top of the center column: "... and a pinned leader may not use his leadership DRM." It's good to see this stuff so that you can check things out yourself. I'm learning a lot about the game watching videos like this and checking out the rules as the game goes.
When routing, the N6 broken unit can never move closer to a Known Enemy Unit (known at any time during his rout phase). Thus P6 cannot be his rout target because it is closer to the 8-1 led group out in the grain. I cannot see the whole board while you are routing, but it seems that the L7 building has to be his target via N7, M8, L7. Note that once moving to N7 the squad never gets any closer to the grain group and never closer than the 2 hexes from M6 than he is in N7. He would take TWO interdiction rolls though if he went for it. Other wise he could just low-crawl to N7 and stay there without interdiction.
Hi ! Thank you for the tutorials, I'm currently learning the basics and your videos are exactly the kind of material I was looking for. I hope we'll see more of them in the future )) On another note I noticed you were using some kind of thread dispenser but can't figure it out what it is. I went on several websites but didn't find anything about it. Do you have a link to share ? I found this tool way more convenient than my actual setup. Many thanks !
+Frederic Rodrigues Thanks! For the thread dispenser, you can search on something like Amazon.com for "retractable reel". People use them to hold something like a badge, id card, keys, etc.
+Counter Attack Never played ASL. Just Squad Leader. Still have the set somewhere. I just used a spool of sewing thread. Lots more rules to ASL, seems like.
You can learn a lot from playing the SKs about Infantry....especially the Defensive Fire rules. When you check LOS...the terrain depiction has to appear on both sides of the string.
+milky55way2012 Thanks. I do check for terrain on both sides of the string - the camera is angled so does not make it look that way but when I check I eyeball it from top-down.
Did I miss something, when the Germans in N6 was first fired on the result wa sa 1MC and you rolled 7, +1 for the result and -1 for the leader should have negated each other leaving the final result 7 and a pass, no pin?
If I am playing and an error occurred such as the one at 23:14, I would have to invoke rule _A.2 ERRORS._ This states _"All results stand once play has progressed past the point of commission."_ In other words, no take backs, even in the violation of the rules.
I was wondering what size forceps you are using (6" or 8") and did you have to bend it out a little to accomindate the counters? I want to get a pair that is comfortable as I have been fumbling with fingers for way too long...WISH I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT! :)
+Erich R It is some form of plexiglass that I bought at a hardware store (Home Depot). I can't live without it when using unmounted maps. The pen is dry erase marker, which I have found incredibly difficult to remove. With tons of scrubbing and re-running a pen over the old ink I can get most of it off, but it still leaves a ghost image. I need something of higher quality.
+Erich R Yes, back in the day they were mounted. Now they are on a thin card stock. I actually prefer the mounted ones (I owned Squad Leader 25 years ago) but I think I am in the minority.
I'm asked that a lot, but the answer is "no". All I've done is round the corners with a corner rounder. I'm thinking it must add a slight bevel that makes them a little more reflective.
Hi, quick question: I have never played ASL, and would like to get into this game which many say it is complex but great to play. You are playing by yourself; is it because this scenario allows a one player game, or is in in general possible to solo play it?
+erpino68 ASL is a 2-player game, but I think it is very playable solo. Obviously you know the plans for each side because... you are you :-) But I try to think about what would be good moves as if I didn't know what the other side was planning. Haven’t played in ages, this is a great refresher! Here in late 2020!
Still watching in 2019! Great videos!

Cool - that's why I do it. Do read the comments on my videos because I do make mistakes ;)

Thank you for this playthrough. I'm also thankful for the comments. I just ordered this starter kit and I'm excited to delve into this game.
Cool. It's quite fun!
Nicely done tutorial.....one thing you missed though, this is before I got to the end, the orchard reduces the Residual counter to a 1.
Thank you so much for making this video. I probably would have shelved this game without it.

You might want to search for "jay richardson's ASLSK tutorial" which is an excellent written tutorial on ASLSK.

Thanks so much for this ... great idea, I'm learning myself and enjoyed your perspective.
Great explanations!! A great intro in ASL. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the videos, they are very interesting for the ASL uninitiated.

Erez Ben-Aharon thanks for pointing that out.
When a unit happens to cower during DFF it is marked with a Final Fire marker, so the 7-4-7 couldn't have SFF on the J3 units... cower really sucks!
Welcome to the fold! Good job on catching the cower rule that popped up when firing at the german stack in j3.
and since that 7-4-7 cowered on First Fire... doesn't it immediately cause a Final Fire counter to be placed on it thereby negating it's ability to Subsequent First Fire (therefore no second PTC on the 7-0 leader)?
toddgrx Yes, I believe this is correct!
German squad in N6 missed the opportunity for Subsequent First Fire. Both American squads used 2MF to move into the buildings and could be fired at twice. So First Fire at squad in M6, Final Fire at squad in N5 and Subsequent First Fire at N5 because he's adjacent.
dubarnik Thanks for the tip!
Very cool presentation.

+Vince Hughes noticed the same thing. :) Actually I play ASL and I was wondering if the rule was different for the starter kit.
He fixes the mistake at around 24 min

48:30 A pinned leader can't use his leadership DRM to help other units pass their MC (Ch. 3.2 in the rules, towards the end).

Enjoyed 2021.

THanks for the great video quality and ZOOM....!!@!!!!!
Ha ha thanks!
Did you spray varnish on your ASL counters? They kinda lloks shiny. What type and brand did you use? And how?

Thank you so much ! I never thought about this solution, Going straight to Amazon to purchase one of these.

I use dental floss to check line of sight 😂😂😂😂😂

steve quinn lol I'm not sure ASLSK has this rule, but I'm sure it's in there.
Just me or is the voice audio echoing and low? Looks good though as a learning tool TY

They are just under 6 3/4" and I did not have to bend them. I bought them at a pharmacy years ago.
"or any MMC CC DR" -> you do roll for leader creation when doubles on CC
Thanks.
Sorry, original twos only, I was hasty there for some reason. Still learning the ASL myself
What sort of overlay are you using on the map-board to allow you draw on it like you have?
+Erich R It is some form of plexiglass that I bought at a hardware store (Home Depot). I can't live without it when using unmounted maps. The pen is dry erase marker, which I have found incredibly difficult to remove. With tons of scrubbing and re-running a pen over the old ink I can get most of it off, but it still leaves a ghost image. I need something of higher quality.
Love the idea of the plexi over the maps. Didn't realize ASL maps were unmounted...weren't the mounted a long time ago?
+Erich R Yes, back in the day they were mounted. Now they are on a thin card stock. I actually prefer the mounted ones (I owned Squad Leader 25 years ago) but I think I am in the minority.
What kind of tweezers are those?
I bought them ages ago at a pharmacy. I just looked for something small with an angled end. You can probably browse on Amazon to find similar ones.
Have you treated your counters, applied a matt or gloss spray to them?
I'm asked that a lot, but the answer is "no". All I've done is round the corners with a corner rounder. I'm thinking it must add a slight bevel that makes them a little more reflective.
It's the 2mm Corner Rounder from Oregon Laminations.
Just watched this in order to play Retaking Vierville - Scenario states that the Germans enter on turn 1 along the east edge of the map?
Doh! Just watched it - bang on!
