I actually really like how the villain admits how his plan almost didn't work in this movie, and how many times they had to scramble to improvise.
So many movies just make you assume the big bad is a low-level psychic who can see the future, because that's the only way his evil plan could have gone so perfectly up until the final act.

You're wrong about one thing - it's not a dream, at least you can't prove it is. One of the beautiful things about the original film is that they never tip their hand to tell you whether it was all a dream or not, they leave it up to you to decide. It's genius.

I dont know what you guys think of Melina, but she was super awesome! She was selfless and gave almost everything to get the people of Mars oxygen. She was in that fight from the begining even before Quaid joined. In fact, I think she was his inspiration. He couldve gone back to being Hausser and have an easy life before meeting her in Mars again, but after seeing her so committed to the cause he fought like hell to help her succeed!

The "Atlas in Wonderland" joke was pretty good.
When I was in eighth grade science and learning about astronomy my favorite teacher showed us the decompression scene from Total Recall, he insisted that we “watch Arnold’s ears wiggle.” We need more teachers that teach creatively, and make life long memories.
Interesting thing I realised watching Total Recall a while back. The voice of the Johnny Cab is Robert Picardo, the doctor from Voyager.
I saw this movie enough as a teenager that I could recite it word for word.
An unintentional similarity it has with the remake is that it has a Breaking Bad cast member, in this case Dean Norris (Hank Schraeder) as Tony the mutant.
This movie's predictions of the future are scary accurate.

This movie is so underrated. Possibly the most sophisticated Arnold movie ever made.
It's basically Inception, but re watchable.
i love this movie just saw it for the first time recently ive been going through all of arnolds movie recently since i didnt watch them as a kid and this is definitely my favorite

I always felt sorry for Maria Shriver who you just know had to listen to Arnold’s Österreich grunts and moans when in the throes of passion. I imagine screening this film and hearing the same damn set of freakish sounds was like reliving their honeymoon.
When I was a kid I watched this this movie and was like: Arnold, so cool! He is in every good action movies.
Now I have grown up and watch this movie and I am like: This movie story is so much much better than I thought it was.
We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, by Philip K. Dick. Same guy who wrote The Man in the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was adapted into Blade Runner. Also, the Piers Anthony novelization of Total Recall is pretty good.
Paul Verhoeven movies in general are consistently _way_ better than they have any right to be. The man was the king of taking a dumb fun premise and making an enduring masterpiece of it.

It's amazing how you guys can draw correlations between movies (for example total recall and Avatar). It's an impressive the talent.
One thing I loved about this movie: You can't say if him on mars was the dream, or him on earth was the dream. Could go both ways.
Apparently it's obvious in the alternate ending that it was just a dream, bit I'm not sure if that counts
