    I'm cutting it in my unheated and uninsured garage in 30⁰ weather. I've learned to do several passes to get a very clean cut. I raise the table saw blade 1/3 the height of the melamine. I do a slow first pass and then turn it over. Do a second slow pass and then raise the blade again to complete the cut. I have have 60t combination blade I'm using as well.

    I have an old vanity box, too much work with plumbing etc to pull it out. Ikea stock doors are too tall and too wide, but I’m cutting them to my custom sizes this weekend and taping the under edge and closing edges. Will let you know how it turns out. Good video.. also important for reducing chipping is proper fence and blade alignment, proper blade choice ( negative hook blade) blade height, and a tight insert for the saw. Every sheet of melamine has tension in it which will bind the blade when ripping and cause chipping, doing a rough and finish cut will reduce chipping.

  • @rds333
    @rds333 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My choice of blade for cutting melamine is Forrest Melamine/Plywood blade. It is expensive, but hands down, is the best blade for melamine. No other manufacturers come close to quality of cut you get with this blade. You can get this blade through Forrest or you can purchase this at a Rockler Woodworking store. I have been using this blade for the last 20 years, and every time I see reviews in woodworking magazines for melamine/plywood blades, the Forrest blade outperforms the rest, period. Don't waste your time and money trying a bargain brand, or one that is not meant for melamine, you'll probably be disappointed.

    Nice video mate, nice tips. Do you know if you could use a similar process to apply laminate to a dado joint in chest of drawers for behind the runners? I don't just want an exposed particle board look, but would seem awkward to use an iron in such a groove. Any advice would be mist appreciated. Cheers

    Great video. Would you recommend using melamine for basement cabinets? My wife is concerned about the possibility or how sensitive it is to absorbing water spills etc. Also instead of building the toe kick on each cabinet wouldn't it be a good idea to make one large framed base for all the cabinets to sit on then just use a 1/4" plywood top layer similar to what ever was being used on the ends of the cabinets?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is fine in the basement unless you get a flood. A separate base is fine as well.

    • @nathanburt6053
      @nathanburt6053 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I build cabinets and I build all my toe kicks on site with 4 inch 3/4 particle or mdf what ever scraps I have to rip. I level the toe kicks and then set all my boxes on top. 1 it is easier and quicker while building my boxes. 2. I don't need to level and shim each box. 3 it makes shipping and packaging easier.

    I suppose these tips would apply to plywood melamine? Personally I never use any type of particle board for anything I do. If I am going to the trouble to hand build anything I want it to last generations, Anything you make using a particleboard type material will be falling apart in twenty years. No matter what you coat it with, just the humidity in the air will make it crumble over time. In kitchens and baths where it gets wet all the time it will fall apart much sooner. I see it happen all the time.

    Hi, great video, thanks for the tips. One question though, what is the best type of glue to stick on the edge banding if it does not come pre-glued so that you can iron on. The edge banding i got is not pre-glued. Should i use normal wood glue?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Riyaad Khan The banding you have is designed to be used in a commercial edge banding machine that heats and applies the glue as needed. You may be able to use contact cement but i'm not sure if that will work.

    • @supermazingerz72
      @supermazingerz72 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you measure to adjust your fence, why don't you measure the front and back of the blade? i know on my delta 10 in. saw the back is always off about a 16th- and 8th difference.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to adjust your fence to be more parallel to your blade. You should have it so you have about 1/32 " wider at the back side compared to the front to reduce binding.

    The edge banding your using is not pvc it is melamine, like the panel itself. Pvc would not snap when you bend it and it would deform and most likely be destroyed by the iron.

  • @bdormer1
    @bdormer1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have to disagree with your procedure for cutting "1/16 over half way" and then flipping the board. Your description of how the TS blade enters and leaves the material is misleading. The blade does not cut by entering the material on the upstroke as you indicate. The forward most and downward stroke of the blade is the first cutting surface to enter the material in all cases (which is why the bottom chips out more than the top of the material). A proper scoring cut is about 1/16" deep on the bottom of the material, thus the blade is entering the material with minimal downward force. Then the blade is raised to 1/8" or so (some people say high enough to clear the gullets between the teeth) above the top surface, and the full cut is made. Putting Blue or Green painters tape over the area of cut line can also help avoid chip out, as the tape adds support to the melamine layer. At the end of the day - the most important three factors are 1)using a proper laminate cutting blade 2)having the TS set up properly (fence and blade need to be parallel) and 3) using the proper cutting procedure (scoring cut followed by cutting full depth).

    • @gopokes4599
      @gopokes4599 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Dormer I think what he was going for is the fact the back edge of The blade is on the up stroke so no worries there of chipping in that direction. I think his explanation was just fine to the non critical thinker.
