    That person defending TattooGate still doesn't have a legitimate argument, because she DIDN'T get art out of that fee! She didn't get a tattoo, she didn't get the labor, she didn't get something she could hang on her wall! She got 10 minutes of Google searching foxes so that the tattoo artist could figure out whose work to trace for the sketch!

      Either that, or when she was talking about the one on her thigh, she mentioned how it almost got infected. I'm betting she believes that more expensive automatically = much higher quality, so someone charging $6,000 on their high end tier *"must"* be the best of the best!
      Frankly, I'm glad I had people with tattoos around who could answer my questions before I talked to anyone at any tattoo studios. They told me things to watch out for, things to expect, things to remember (like tipping,) and it was a huge help.

      My theory is that they didn't look into what Tattoogate really was, just saw that people were mad at someone charging $1500 for something tattoo related, and didn't look beyond, probably thinking that it was $1500 for the whole tattoo (which, while expensive, would not be crazy for a big piece in colour or something). And they looked absolutely stupid in the process... ^^

    One thing that really gets me about tattoo gate, is that I can commission a fully rendered illustration for $300-$500, AND I get to see it at various stages throughout the process (sketch, lineart, flats) and request like 3-5 revisions for free. For $1500 from my favourite artist I could get 6 separate fullbody, fully coloured and shaded character commissions. If you're going to charge a design fee, it shouldn't be so WILDLY outside normal commission prices.

    • @rozharris6834
      @rozharris6834 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Exactly. I'm an artist who does commissions, and there is no way I would send that crappy sketch to anyone as a finished product, for any price. Maybe as a WIP to work out the composition and layout. Which you know... Would be included in the price of the commission.

    • @finchfry
      @finchfry ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. The highest commission price I've seen for an art piece is $500, and that was for a piece with several (like 6 or 7) different characters, full body, with color and background, 20x30 inches in size, as many revisions as were needed, and done by a popular artist. Many commission artist do half price upfront, and half price when it's finished to hold the customer accountable. Which may be reasonable for tattoo artists to do if they really want more security, but they can't just start adding extra fees that don't apply to the final cost of the tattoo.

    • @gokuxsephiroth4505
      @gokuxsephiroth4505 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Same. I've commissioned a drawing of an dragon from one of my books from an artist who works professionally, mostly doing concept art for games, but occasional commissions. It was like 400 euros, and it is STUNNING. Plus, I got to see the sketch, the lineart, the flat colours and finished product all for that.
      I commissioned a book cover for even less - like $200, and it, again, is amazing. Again, I got the sketch, a first draft, and we did some mild revisions before the finished product.

    I'm not a tattooed person (yet) but I will say that every profession evolves. No profession is immune to evolution. HOWEVER, the girl who said that what this Tattoo Gate artist did was okay completely ignored one MAJOR problem, SHE TRACED THE FOX FROM AN ETSY STORE. Sure, a design fee MIGHT be the next set in evolution to the profession but IF I'm going to pay a design fee, it better be an original work of art, not something someone found online. In that case, I can design a tattoo by placing a piece of tracing paper over my computer screen, copy the image (I think I did this when I was a kid with cartoon characters and pausing my VCR) or use photoshop to design my own and completely negate the design fee and I'm sure I'd be able to find SOMEONE who tattoos decently to do it just for easy money.

      Designing your own is so special 💜
      Art should be included imo, but you should totally do your own design someday! I draw directly on my body, then recreate the lines in photoshop for the stencil. The tattoo artist still gets to blend in their own style, love it :)
      I think the ethical issue is that the person who's doing the tattoo doesn't always know if you really made that design, so you should back it up. I bring references/sketches, print the lines, and show up with marker on my skin lol

I'd basically only expect that money back if they misrepresented themselves as licensed or showed up drunk, and I can fix both of those with a chargeback even if the fee says "nonrefundable".

    As a tattooed nurse I 100% believe the tattoo industry and the medical industry are not much different, both deal with needles and bodily fluids, the risk of infections and the need to sanitize and clean effectively not to mention you are 9x more likely to get an infection in an open wound from a hospital than a tattoo studio because, unfortunately, hospitals can not effectively clean and sanitize to the standards required every single time especially in the emergency department because there are too many patients and not enough staff whereas a tattoo artist, a reputable artist does have the time which is why you are more likely to get an infection from the hospital than a tattoo and why, if you have an open wound, you are usually, not regularly but usually, prescribed antibiotics by the hospital as a "just in case"

    The wild thing to me is that the POINT of sending your client a rough sketch is literally to show them the vibe the finished piece will have so they can tell you what they think and you can make changes on something that didn't take long. Like. That is the literal point of sending your client a sketch in the first place.
    I'm looking at this from the perspective of a visual artist who has illustrated songs and pieces of writing for other people and I could never imagine sending them a sketch and saying "well this is how it is and if you don't like it then I don't care"????
    A sketch should not take you more than like, 20 minutes -- it's literally meant to be quick and a quick concept of the finished result, and in an art commission setting the money exchanged at this point would be a deposit (which would practically never be at a 1.6k rate, since artists who charge this much are usually hired by companies for marketing etc and have completely different contracts and are payed with total creative control for the client in mind with all the change requests that entails.)

    In response to the one woman trying to defend the ludicrously high prices, An artist asks for a deposit to hold your appointment time AND to pay for the sketch! That 50-300 dollars- what have you- is the deposit for their time. The deposit tends to be much lower if you're getting flash work. Why? BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THE TIME IT TAKES TO DRAW IT. A digital drawing varies in price but is usually in that range. The artist's hourly/day rate is the cost of the physical service to tattoo that image on you. THAT is where they can charge you for their experience, their "prestige," equipment, and the actual time to do the tattoo.

It also shows that the person has no fucking idea what they are talking about.

  • @bad_bau
    @bad_bau ปีที่แล้ว +6

    22:53 I'm not a tattoo artist, but I am a sculptor. My work also requires significant planning and design before I can even start on the final product. While I understand that sculpture and tattooing aren't the same, I personally would never charge a design fee. A deposit is reasonable, but it should go toward the final price because the final price should include all of the labor, time, and experience that goes into a piece, including during the planning phase. So a deposit ensures that even if an artist gets no-showed, they are still compensated for their work designing the piece, preparing to tattoo them, and reserving the time. However, that deposit should be part of the final cost, not a separate fee, and the artist needs to be honest with themselves about what that deposit should be. The issue isn't necessarily total cost (though in Ariel's case, it 1000% is). It's the idea of charging someone separately for something that is a necessary part of the process that they would've had to do anyways to complete the final product. If you want to get paid for making drawings, then sell your drawings, but if you want to tattoo, you are being paid for the tattoo. From my perspective, if someone commissioned a sculpture from me, it would be wildly inappropriate for me to charge them a dime for designing the sculpture before the sculpture is delivered. At the end of the day, they aren't paying me because they wanted a plan for a sculpture. They're paying me because they wanted a sculpture. An artist can ensure the client signs a contract that adequately protects them before starting any work to avoid getting screwed, but the client shouldn't be getting screwed either. The idea of people having to pay separately for the plan of the final product on top of paying for the final product just doesn't sit right with me as an artist. It feels like a restaurant charging guests a separate dish fee.

But I’m not nuts so I’ve been looking for artists that do anime + whimsical animals + Black and white!

    I was having a chat with my artist last week about this whole mess. We agreed that it should be normal to charge a design fee if the client wants the design in advance, and then to take that off the tattoo cost when they actually get it tattooed. This way it discourages people who want to get a design made and tattooed somewhere else for cheap, but eases the concerns of clients who need to see their design in advance for peace of mind.

    Okay, I commission art on a semi-regular basis (usually a few a year). I've never gotten a tattoo, but I know something about paying artists for designs. I can understand paying for the art separately, and even paying a little more if the client needs a design from scratch and doesn't have a reference, but we're talking... maybe a few hundred, max? The most I've ever paid, full-color for busts of 4 characters including hands, would've been about $320 at full price (I got a discount at the time but I'd be willing to pay full price next time), and that was from a very popular and very good artist. It involved pre-existing characters, so I didn't incur a design fee, but that's usually only about +25% on most artists' commission sheets. Just to put that into perspective. I'd be willing to pay an extra couple hundred for the design fees for a tattoo, but... not a thousand, that's for sure! And if they're going to charge separately for that, I should have the right to go to a separate artist to get a design from someone else and bring in my own design that I own for free to avoid those fees and only pay the hourly rate for the actual tattoo.

    I just got a new tattoo last week, and my tattoo is mainly based on an obscure anime character. When we went in, the artist had four different variations drawn up, (which she was HAPPY to discuss and make minor tweaks to the one we went with) and as she worked, she was happily talking about researching the character, and googling through pictures to really get an idea of the best way to design what I wanted.
    I had an original consultation with her that cost me $20 on top of the price of the tattoo, which I'd never had at that studio, but DAMN, do I think she EARNED that fee, because she put HOURS of research into designing what is now, and may ALWAYS be, my favorite tattoo❤

    This world is filled with millions of super talented artists, who'll never get $1500 for a piece of their art. I don't necessarily think a separate design fee is unacceptable, but to pay that much, it would need to be pretty darn good. Not a traced sketch, which isn't even what I asked for. If you are truly talented as an artist and as a tattoo artist, you won't need to hide behind pyramid scheme level pricing tricks, because you have the skills to design tattoos people want to pay for.

    I honestly dont have an issue with the concept of charging for tattoo artists design time, my issue is is that this specific payment scheme is designed to be predatory and to almost force the customer into keep buying packages so that they can end up with a tattoo they want. Dividing costs in this manner, being unclear on all costs potebtially involved and continuing to push additional costs is a clear manipulation tactic.

  • @Wodenseyes

    I’ve been doing tattoos and permanent make up for several years now. I charge a $50 design/appt deposit. But if they end up showing up and fulfilling the tattoo I take that $50 and take it out of the cost of the tattoo. It’s to protect me from people having me draw up a tattoo design 2-3 times and putting an appt in my book then just not showing up for it. They only pay the $50 when they go to fully book, and I usually return it if they decide to cancel and choose a different artist and can give me 2 weeks notice that they’re not showing up. But I also don’t draw my designs digitally and only allow people to take a picture of the sketch if they’ve made the booking. When I was first starting out I had a lot of college kids have me or other artists at the shop draw a custom piece just to take it to a cheap place and have some fly by night person tattoo my design. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with requiring a deposit, but scam artist tattoists make our entire industry look shady af

    My favorite musician sometimes sells physical albums that are entirely done by hand. He burns one of his albums onto a blank CD, draws a doodle on a blank sleeve, and signs it. He's one of the most talented people around with a cult following going back decades, and I was lucky enough to order one of these gems directly, from his hands to mine (with a little postage in between).
    The cost? $40.
    Just saying, even when art is highly valuable to someone, that doesn't mean artists have to take advantage of their fans.

  • @muddygirl8819
    @muddygirl8819 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t mind paying a design/consultation fee. However as an artist (not tattoo though) if I was running a shop the fee would be $100 and if you followed through with getting a tattoo it would go towards your tattoo cost. That way anyone that doesn’t follow through the artists are still having their time covered, but it’s still included in the total cost of the tattoo and not completely separated. I think that this would be a good middle ground.

    Did that last lady with her reason for the prices of tattoos needing to cost that much miss the fact of the first lady tattoo gate lady getting a sketch that was mostly flowers when she sent over reference pics of 2 foxes in movement that those pics were mostly of. That's the point of the issue. The whole pricing set up was set up like a scam. So that the tattooer could draw something that needed more than just a tweak. Then the over $1,000 cheap end isn't worth the price. That everyone using her would probably have to get at lowest the second option. That's the point that she missed. She's also giving us clues as to why she thinks this way. 'Cause the leg tat that she has almost got infected and that was the one that she didn't pay any of those fees for. She's not thinking that she just went to a bad or not very good tattooer. Only if that tattooer charged her a design fee and it would've been a better tat. Probably not. She must of understood the amount that the first lady paid and never got tattooed. So her guy must charge her at least that much or most likely she wouldn't of been saying that people should be paying that much for a design fee. I also feel like she's being charged about that much 'cause she's giving reasons for why they should charge a lot. Ok, but the hidden fees kind of thing is the big issue with both tattoo gate tats. If the tattooers were up front, then these ladies or most clients wouldn't agree to these high prices. That's why the hidden fees thing exists. I can understand needing to up the prices for healthcare, etc... Just don't up it by so much. Like triple the price at least. Would this lady be ok to pay a lot more at a chain grocery store or chain restaurant so that the customer pays for the higher required minimum wage? Most likely not since it's like these companies can pay that extra cost. Maybe they can't (most likely they can). It's about the same with small businesses. People at some point have to choose what they can spend their money on. You will run out of money and credit at some point. People just don't want a sketch to start costing about $1,000 and it being one that isn't close to what the customer referenced while the sketch pretty much has to stay the same. Making that a loss of $1,000 for something they didn't want. That's what this lady isn't understanding.
