I am a psychologist and I had this very idea on this exact day, that's why I searched for it on youtube! Talk about coincidences! I think you did a great job ;)
Pedro Gomes that’s hilarious because I searched before I recorded it and found nothing. We did the same exact thing. Thanks! You still planning on making yours?
I loved this and thought it to be very fascinating! A little background on the House episode from a House fanatic: the episode is from season 6, Broken, when House was given the option to have his medical license suspended or to seek help for his drug addiction. He chose to check himself into a psychiatric facility, run by Dr. Nolan. Dr. Nolan met with House originally, House went through withdrawal from his drug addiction, and then Dr. Nolan directed him towards group therapy sessions for a few weeks, run by Dr. Medina. House was recommended to start medication (I don’t remember which), which he pretended to take to feign cooperation so as to get his medical license back, using another patient’s urine to pass drug testing. He was caught being deceitful because Dr Nolan switched House’s medications to placebos after he began to suspect that House had not started medication/when Dr. Nolan began receiving urine that showed House was on medication, when Dr Nolan was prescribing placebos. House helped another patient escape the facility, a patient who had delusions, and thought that he could be a superhero (was always trying to help others, etc). House took the guy to an amusement park setting, and the man was able to go on one of those air propelling sky diving rides. Unfortunately, after having a great day on rides, the man jumped out of a high level of a parking garage and was seriously injured. After this episode, Dr. Nolan stated that he would be transferring House to another facility, at which point we had the scene seen above, where House finally agrees to start medication If you like house, it is a good and interesting episode. It’s an interesting look into the complicities of treatment and patient lives. It was their 2 hour special from season 6.
Also, I definitely just realized that I ruined some major plot points there, and I am sorry for that. There are, however, many other great story lines and characters with interesting and varied backgrounds (I loved Alvie, House’s roommate, who has bipolar disorder).
I would love for you to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5 Episode 16 "The Body" Her mother dies unexpectedly and everyone is reacting and coping differently with their grief. It's the most realistic portrayal of dealing with death I've ever seen, and it's critically acclaimed as "the best hour of television of all time." So I think it would be pretty wonderful for a psychologist to review it.
The Sopranos was one of the later seasons , you really should see how the relationship develops from the beginning to understand the dynamic. The clip reminds me just how great James Gandolfini was as Tony.
You should totally do In Treatment! I'm a therapist and I swear the way the therapist in the show does therapy has seeped into my sessions recently. Wonder if anyone else has experienced this. LOL. He is to my mind, very confrontational. I have been watching the show back to back. I'm not convinced that many clients could handle the way he works until they'd been in therapy for quite awhile. And some couldn't handle it at all.
It’s hard in this Sopranos scene because she is a bit more closed off here due to personal issues with her and he sort of lost it tossing her table the previous time he was there. So i think she’s overly cautious. I think you should watch his first encounter with her
I agree, Zara. Also, I did not think she reacted in a fake way at all. I got that she was concerned about the son, and was dropping her guard after not knowing what to expect from him in this first session after he reacted inappropriately.
The problem I've had with SSRI's where that I felt prisoner in my own body. I was hurt but I felt prohibited to express what I felt inside. The pain and depression felt the same, but it was worse because I couldn't channel my emotions right. It felt like a mist covering up the burning inside. Instead of covering the pain, it covered my ability to express it. A miserable feeling. I couldn't cry, couldn't shout or make a mental fist when angry. But I had the need to.
Thanks for this. Would definitely watch more. Just started a counseling program and this was great review of some skills before i have my first videotaped session with a client actor next week!
I'm really glad I found your channel (through asmr searches). I usually avoid therapy channels since I go to therapy and I don't want to think about therapy when I'm at therapy but I sat through this and had to subscribe to your channel, your content is inspiring and heart-warming ❤
React to Monk! It’s absolutely one of my favorite shows with a mentally struggling yet highly successful protagonist and although I know it’s not accurate I would love to see a professional react to it!
Great video and analysis. Also nice to see the always excellent James Gandolfini again. It's been a while since I watched The Sopranos. Rest In Peace, James. You are missed.
Will you react to the Netflix show Atypical, there are several therapist sessions with the main character in the first season the most. Is it normal for therapist to give there patients things to do? Or tell them what to do or when they’re wrong?
I request you react to some of the citizens of the Shivering Isles from the game Oblivion, some of them just seem ... off, maybe you could explain what they have and how you would go about helping them? some examples being Big Head and his quest "The Fork of Horripilation" or even Amiable Fanriene, and his quest "Falling Awake". Or heck maybe even Sheogorath himself.
The problem with analyzing Dr Melfi’s technique in this episode of the Sopranos is that prior to this scene her colleagues were hounding her at a dinner party about the latest research that you cannot help criminals/psychopaths (supposedly) and she went deep in her own research and that’s what’s affecting her reaction to him here as she is about to refer him on as a patient. This is their last session together and both know it internally and then it manifests in the session. The episode you really have to see is Employee of the Month. I think from season 3 or 4. That raises so many interesting ethical qualms.
Duff The Psych, great stuff. Fantastic job at tackling the issue of therapy in movies and TV in an interesting way. Will definitely tune in for future videos!
I'm currently a Psych major in Germany with focus on clinical psychology, and the number one thing that I hate the most about this degree is the sheer amount of quantitive methods and statistics I have to go through
I love these videos! The content of this is great. I appreciate your expert opinion. From a youtube video standpoint, I'd say try to eliminate the black bars on the screen, add something interesting to the background (like books or paintings - just like therapy!). Also it might look better if you're looking towards the video instead of away from it, just an immersion thing. Looking forward to more of this.
Thanks for the feedback. Definitely learned a lot from this first attempt. My intention was to simply put the clips on the screen with me, but I was too centered in the frame, so next time I will simply sit to the side more. My office is totally bare because I just moved, but I'll have some art up in the background soon hopefully!
I liked when you talked about the very last video how her face didn't match her tone of voice. I've had a many of therapist and the main problem I always had was this one face they ALL made. I'm not sure how to explain it too much but it made me feel as if I were a lunatic and my problem didn't matter. I often avoided these sessions with them because I felt as they never cared and it's interesting to see a therapist talk about this, I like seeing this point of view because I was always the patient. I don't know if they were trying to seem not to care or if they really didn't but it drove me to the point of discontinuing the sessions because I felt as though I wasn't being heard and if I was I was either being ignored or they stored it away to use it against me. I see now that this seems almost childish as this makes a point of saying that everyone is after me and only wants to talk to me for information on how to both control me as well as use me for personal gains. Sorry I've rambled on, love the video and I will say this once more that I like this perspective on how you see the patient and the therapist.
The Sopranos scene sounds strange because they changed the voices. Also, there's some context missing because she's been seeing him for a while and knows he could kill her at any time.
The sessions from House were always my favourite. I myself have never been to one, but i've always hoped they are really like that. That therapists like that guy do exist.
Agoraphobia thing is something i was never diagnosed with whoever it describes what i used to fear. Mostly because of my anxiety can get bad and i get scared ill be in the open. I seemed to have grown out of it though
I'd love to see your reaction to two separate instances on Mad Men: Season 1 with Betty Draper, then season 4 with her daughter Sally. Both are fascinating cases & the way it worked in the 60's vs now, what's changed & what hasn't. It's an amazing show and I highly recommend it & would love to see your analysis.
Those cabinet door handles are driving me crazy. I feel like it’s done intentionally because it simply cannot be ignored in such a bland and depressing room and that it has to be some sort of intentional distraction.
Oh the Sopranos is one of my very favourite shows. I would have suggested the pilot would have been a good place to start, but as you can imagine the therapy scenes unfold slowly over the different episodes. By this point in the series their relationship is fraught, to say the least.
@@duffthepsych just look the whole first episode, then the serie.one of the best shows ever. Great late James Gandolffini as the mob boss and Loraine Braco as the therapist. Every therapy session in the show is something special. Other characters are awesome and very well written also. hope you watch it by now, considering that your comment is from 2 years ago
The movie To the Bone I LOVED his role was the only two types of pcys I actually loved. They didn't "attack" me they told me what I already knew but was afraid to adit. Ive also been told at one point in the hospital that BPDs can be almost almost impossible to treat, but they would find a way to try. meaning that even though I could have felt like I would never get better there was at least one person willing to "try" meaning they weren't trying to force to fix me they were just there. so this movie was awesome for me. (granted I never had an eating disorder)
As a psychology student studying at uni in Australia. Really enjoyed this and it super insightful as well. Glad I found a video of an expert reacting but in the realm of psychology
Also I absolutely despised Kieanu Reeves’ character’s approach to situation. I personally feel that those ‘rational realistic’ approach really doesn’t work effectively with people with low self efficacy and feeling so vaunerable in fact it could do more damage to them
TheHouseOffice The Sopranos has some of the best acting of all time. What do you mean? You need to have context of the entire show to understand why she was talking the way she was. This clip was from the 3rd to last episode in the entire show. The way she talked to him in season 1 was completely different than how she spoke in season 6.
I know this was a while ago, but it got me thinking. I have diagnosed Social Anxiety Disorder, but I don't know if that can encompass agoraphobia or what. I don't think too much on it. One of many experiences was trying to support my mom going to the gym and getting more and more anxious as people entered the class, then needing to leave and having a panic attack when the instructor closed and locked the door to the room so my inner self just said "trapped." They ended up letting me out and I cried and shook in the locker room for an hour. People are difficult for me...
There is another tv show that you should check out, The Middle. Season 5, episode 10, Sleepless in Orson. The youngest of the three kids has to go to see a school therapist for a bunch of different reason that kind of change each season
I would love to see you do the first therapy scene in the Sopranos --she seems disingenuous and off here because she’s been contemplating ending the therapy, her therapist she believes he’s a sociopath and her type of therapy doesn’t work. They’ve had a lot of back-and-forth so this is the ending of the show And it was a completely different dynamic in the first season or two but I agree because she was just basically fed up with him is definitely how she comes off as well.
This was awesome to watch. Hope to see more. One note, I've never had a therapy with that open scenario. I've been in therapy since I was a child and it's always been at a desk, therapist on one side, me on the other. I don't know if that might just be how my country does things. To be honest I'd probably feel way too exposed in that open chair scenario.
@@duffthepsych I can feel myself checking out already. the worst part is my own house has one door frame that is slanted so everytime I walk by I see it's not a 90% angle haha. once you notice you cant unsee.
I would love to see you do some react videos to personalities in shows like Kitchen Nightmares or Hotel Impossible. Lots of abnormal psychology and strange behaviors under stress.
I'm an undergraduate psychology major and I find this video very interesting and yet amusing, nice job! I can relate to Bob, agoraphobia's a bitch. It's living hell. Fortunately, now I'm on medication and seeing a therapist and doing much much better.
Please react to the 1.cramped scene and Penis as a pogo stick scene in Patch Adams, the " Its not your fault scene inbGood Will Hunting. 2. The Aquirer\ hall pass scene, are you sure yourvmothets a bitch, deciding not to lose weight, giving up, how depressing is that? and transferrence scene in Mumford. 3. The orphaned scene, the how am I not who I am, the dont look at me scene and the blanket scene in I heart Huckabees. 4. The car scene with Nicole Kidman and James Caan in Dogville( not a therapist but good psychological content). 5. The telling the truth scene in " Hectors Search for Happiness". 6. The scene where the therapist sneaks in and mentions gay truck stops in "Something About Mary"
I've heard therapists talk about how important it is to mirror client's body language in session. I'm not conscious of being aware how much that affects me as a patient, because I don't notice much about body language at the forefront of my mind--my own or others'. I'm diagnosed autistic, and I'm not sure whether (in my case) that manifests as me being more affected by body language than I'm aware of, or whether it manifests as me honestly being oblivious to the effects of body language that don't register in my conscious mind. That mirroring technique might be totally lost on me.
He says delicious to the meds, this could hint at them being sugar pills, and were simply used as a metaphor by the psychiatrist to get on House's level.
PLEASE react to the final therapy scene in the episode "Pickle Rick" from the tv show "Rick and Morty". It's a scifi cartoon and it's completely absurd, but at the same time it's one of my favorite therapy scenes. You'll probably want/need to watch the whole episode, though.
Waaaait..! I suddenly understand why my psychologist told me I might have agoraphobia. I thought it meant that being anxious about being around other people, I wasn't anxious about that at all! It was just the issue about a toilet so I just waved it off immediately ... I never understood that agoraphobia could be just that! Wow, mind-blown! Still having similar issues unfortunately but at least now I will be more open minded about agoraphobia. Thanks a lot!
*AS FOR HOUSE HE WAS IN AN INSANE ASLYUM THERE.. AND PRIOR TO HIM SITTING THERE WITH THE OTHER DOCTOR...HOUSE HAD PREVIOUSLY TRIED TO GET THE PSYCHIATRIST TO JUST SIGN PAPERWORK SAYING THAT HE WAS ALL OKAY TO GO BACK TO WORK. THE PSYCHIATRIST SAID NAH, TO GET MY SIGNATURE YOU NEED TO COME AND TALK TO ME. HOUSE HAD BEEN IN THAT MENTAL HOSPITAL FOR A WHILE SO THE PSYCHIATRIST HANDING HIM THE MEDS MIGHTVE BEEN FINE SINCE HE DIDN'T JUST MEET HIM OFF THE STREETS. HE ALSO KNEW THAT HOUSE WOULDN'T BE TAKING DRUGS FROM NURSES SO HANDING IT TO HIM WAS A MORE EFFECTIVE WAY TO GET HIM TO TRY TO TAKE THEM. BTW, THE PILLS ACTUALLY WORKED. (FOR A LIL)*
One of my favorite scenes in The Sopranos is when Carmela sees a therapist. I forget which season it is, but it was while she was contemplating divorce. She had spent her whole life connected to the mob, and had probably never spoken about it to anyone from the outside. I thought the therapist was blunt, and did a great job but I'm no professional.
All therapist/psychologists I see and hear have this homey type feeling the major you choose and/or job choose is very much needed in this world I'm actually studying psychology as we speak 👍.
Fuck Off I'm not in the mood if you’ve never looked him up, check out videos of Carl Rogers. He is basically the father of that soft, unconditional positive regard approach to therapy
I’d be a great therapist on the silence front- I’m not great at coming up with ideas on what to talk about and I feel uncomfortable shoving ideas on people but I’m great once there’s a set topic or idea
Hi Im Jenny, I suffer from ADHD which ive been diagnosefirst at 8 then 15 then 28 and last time was at 34. I alsohave pstd, high anxiety and BPD. the worse thing a therapist I think ever said to me was "if you are not going to do this excersise then you don't need to come see me." we were working on a certain type if meditation I forget what its called but its where you hold two vibrating things in your hands and they pulse and you are suppose to connect your breathing to them and just "zone out" is what I say. I told her that day I could not do the excersise because I could not calm my mind down. I had been seeing her for about 10mos now (1 a month then she said 2 times a month) so she had a preaty good idea of me. I was court ordered to go to therepy and I only went to the one place because it was next to nothing to pay for and the only thing I could afford. the more I went the worse I got. I have seen many therapist since I was 28, my first hospitalized mental breakdown. and only two I liked and they both just as I was getting comfortable left. So now today at 35 I don't go. I seem to do soo much better without therepy. Is that uncommon for BPD? I will say I did take an awesome 10wk DBT session that helped sooo much. I just feel therepy makes me worse.
the house scene makes sense. I unfortunately have never been on any meds until I was 28. over the yrs ive found out I apparently cant take a lot of them. the ones that I liked: paxil but made me way to groggy even on the lowest dose no matter when I took it, even getting the 12 hr ones. so I had to stop. Zoloft I loved but made me too nausea way past the date of nausea and was getting worse after 30days. straterra I loved but the second time I started taking it I ended up having the suicidal ideation act up more.
That's really interesting about the table creating a power dynamic, i guess to undo that if you needed a table you'd rotate it sideways and tell the other person they could choose which side of it to sit on. Table is good if you are going to do anything with written exercises, but also i like it in that you can sit closer to each other without it feeling uncomfotable I love how you showed more empathy for Tony Soprano than his therapist did, and in her world he is a real person suffering and in our world he is just a character. The therapist in that show is very very bad, and to be honest i don't think it's that unrealistic. It's good that there are lots of examples in fiction that you shouldn't necessarily trust your therapist just because they are qualified, if you get a dud, like her, you should swap
There's a video about what it's like to be paranoid schizaphrenic (sp?) including auditory hallucinations, I would like to see what you think about that video.
the part about 8 minutes in about reactions. I find myself always testing my therapists. It comes down to compatability for me. If the therapist gasps? As a person extremely uncomfortable seeing the expression of pity? I had a therapist gasp at a fact of my life and go 'I'm so sorry!' and I was like dang thats so insignificant. Like really who cares. Thats so small to me compared to my actual issues. So I have a few facts of my life as like test facts.
I'm thinking of becoming a psychologists and I love the way you explain things! (I was sucked in right away so thank you for this entertaining and educational video!) This is extremely late but I am definitely going to check out more of your videos and subscribe
This was fascinating! The therapist in that last one....isn't the Sopranos about rival mobs or something? Maybe not, I've never seen it. But she was so weird I kept thinking she wasn't real and was just a set up and was going to jump up all of a sudden and ask him to say hello to her little friend. But his grief and frustration at passing on "bad genes" to his kids. Oy vey. Right in the feels.
Would you be able to react to the airline panic attack youtube clip? With the indian man. I'm still not sure if what he's experiencing is a panic attack.
The Sopranos is considered the best written TV show of all time by many credible film critics. You described the therapy session to have an “off” vibe to it in terms of how Dr. Melfi spoke to her client, but if you’ve seen the entire show and know the context of their relationship, it makes more sense. Honestly you should check out the series. Some of the most profound characters of all time with a deep psychological aspect. I’ve never seen a show take a deeper dive into the human condition than The Sopranos.
I really like this video. Could you review the mental breakdown of Daenerys Targaryen in the final season of Game of Thrones? Is it realistic or did it escalate too quickly?

Those cabinet door handles are driving me crazy. I feel like it’s done intentionally because it simply cannot be ignored in such a bland and depressing room and that it has to be some sort of intentional distraction.
Hi, I am a therapist and counseling lecturer in the UK, thanks for the analysis, really well done! I enjoyed watching it!
Thank you!
🙌🏼 loving it. Can't wait for you to do Good Will Hunting!
Oh the Sopranos is one of my very favourite shows. I would have suggested the pilot would have been a good place to start, but as you can imagine the therapy scenes unfold slowly over the different episodes. By this point in the series their relationship is fraught, to say the least.
martinw93 if you have any specific scenes that you think I should look at let me know!
Im just watching the video. Its very very interesting. Your way of telling your opinion and your reactions are sooo good! Ive learnt a lot!
I loooove What About Bob. It's super funny. Bill Murray is a STAR.
I also loved this! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Also - thanks for breaking agoraphobia down so clearly and in such a de-stigmatizing way.
As a psychology student studying at uni in Australia. Really enjoyed this and it super insightful as well. Glad I found a video of an expert reacting but in the realm of psychology
Also I absolutely despised Kieanu Reeves’ character’s approach to situation. I personally feel that those ‘rational realistic’ approach really doesn’t work effectively with people with low self efficacy and feeling so vaunerable in fact it could do more damage to them
For the Soprano's scene he's being really nice to not just say "Terrible acting." lol
Please do more of House!! Such good examples of narcissistic and antissocial behavior!! Really enjoyed the video!
First thing I thought was you better do the House episode and you did so thank you
I know this was a while ago, but it got me thinking.
I love this! I hope this becomes a series! 😎
Draconicrose Gaming where do you live? There are definitely regional differences
@@duffthepsych I live in Portugal.
i really liked this video, downside is i completely checked out when i noticed the offset handles in the background.
Dude you would HAAATE my house. It's a rental, super old, and on clay foundation. Everything shifts around. Nothing is straight.
@@duffthepsych I can feel myself checking out already. the worst part is my own house has one door frame that is slanted so everytime I walk by I see it's not a 90% angle haha. once you notice you cant unsee.
Why did that last scene make me think of Umbridge’s detention? And btw Good Will Hunting has some good scenes
I would love to see you do some react videos to personalities in shows like Kitchen Nightmares or Hotel Impossible. Lots of abnormal psychology and strange behaviors under stress.
Can you do a reaction regarding the Expect opinion to Dr. Shannon Curry vs. Dr. Dawn Hugh's during the Depp Vs Heard Trial?
Yes ! You’re like the psych dr mike👌🏽
Atty Tatty 👍👍
Bipolar woman here. I hated when my therapist hid behind her clipboard. It made me wonder if she was secretly writing mean notes.
Yes Monk was great! My husband and I enjoyed watching that together.
Really nice video. React to In Treatment please!
The freaky friday scene missed the part with the guy with glasses, Evan.
I really like this!!!!!
19:50 If you came here for House
Thank You so much.
I do not like the therapist very much in To The Bone. Way too judgy. I would never roast a client that way.
Same, you'd think a therapist would be more empathetic.
But many people love this scene becos of Keanu
House was in psychiatric lock up he wasn't a volunteer for therapy. This was before he drove through cuddys living room
React to joker(2019)
Good one! Please do Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 episode 11 "The Therapist" where the main character really hates therapy and doesn't believe in it!
Great video, but I really can’t get over the fact that you’ve NEVER SEEN WHAT ABOUT BOB. A national treasure.
Lauren Morgan haha guilty! There are so many movies on my list to catch up on but no time
for House's scene , I didn't understand Van Gogh's reference , I tried to search for it but didn't get
That's really interesting about the table creating a power dynamic, i guess to undo that if you needed a table you'd rotate it sideways and tell the other person they could choose which side of it to sit on.
Table is good if you are going to do anything with written exercises, but also i like it in that you can sit closer to each other without it feeling uncomfotable
I love how you showed more empathy for Tony Soprano than his therapist did, and in her world he is a real person suffering and in our world he is just a character. The therapist in that show is very very bad, and to be honest i don't think it's that unrealistic. It's good that there are lots of examples in fiction that you shouldn't necessarily trust your therapist just because they are qualified, if you get a dud, like her, you should swap
The doctor gave me an I.Q. test. I was relieved that the results were negative.
There's a video about what it's like to be paranoid schizaphrenic (sp?) including auditory hallucinations, I would like to see what you think about that video.
Well that was super interesting. I love it)))
Great video. I enjoy your approach. I’m just starting to entertain therapy.
Could you react to the therapy scenes from Never have I ever, The Fallout, Sex Education and Lucifer?
the part about 8 minutes in about reactions.
Oy vey. Right in the feels.
madiantin yeah his performance was fantastic
Would you be able to react to the airline panic attack youtube clip? With the indian man. I'm still not sure if what he's experiencing is a panic attack.
Quite fun and informative, thanks!
I'm sure you're totally right. For this episode, I just wanted to have my first impressions of the therapy itself.
Interesting video. I'd like to see more like this!
I really like this video. Could you review the mental breakdown of Daenerys Targaryen in the final season of Game of Thrones? Is it realistic or did it escalate too quickly?
I'm not even a psychologist and even I know Dany's mental breakdown was unrealistic and escalated way too quickly.
I haven’t seen what about bob in years, I’m super offended by how much I identify with him now 😬
