- To celebrate the release of “Avengers: Endgame,” we had physicist (and lifelong comic book fan) Jim Kakalios take a closer look at the physics of the Marvel universe. Here he reacts to 10 memorable scenes from Marvel movies and rates them based on their accuracy. Find out what exactly quantum mechanics, time dilation, Einstein’s theory of special relativity, and spider silk tell us about the superheroes of the Marvel franchise.
Which weapon would you rather have in a fight: Thor’s Mjolnir hammer or Captain America’s shield? Hint: The answer has to do with the conservation of energy - and the sonoluminescence of vibranium. Dr. Kakalios breaks down the physics behind this and many other Marvel phenomena, including Shuri’s holographic car in “Black Panther;” Peter Parker’s spider-webbing train save in “Spider-Man 2;” the multiverse theory of “Doctor Strange;” the role of Pym particles and the Higgs boson in “Ant-Man;” artificial gravity in “Guardians of the Galaxy;” and Tony Stark’s cybernetic helmet and gold-titanium exoskeleton in “Iron Man.” He sheds light on why Carol Danvers doesn’t age from “Captain Marvel” to “Avengers: Endgame;” why the Space Stone is so powerful when yielded by Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War;” and what’s with all the talk of quantum entanglement, quantum tunneling, and “quantum mumbo-jumbo” in “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”
Kakalios is the author of three books - “The Physics of Superheroes,” “The Physics of Everyday Things,” and “The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics.” He was a science consultant for Sony’s 2012 film “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Before that, he won an Emmy for his work as a science consultant for the Warner Bros. superhero film “Watchmen.” A physics professor at the University of Minnesota, Kakalios teaches a popular class that uses comic books to illustrate the principles of physics.

I can almost see Fishburnes' eyebrows slightly raised as if a bit surprised by the question, as he nods his head and says "yes", then turning to Douglas, who's also nodding(with a shrug and no eye contact).
Definitely a missed opportunity....on a quantum level.
I'll be honest, I would happily watch videos of him reacting to movies. You can tell that he loves movies (especially Marvel movies), he's a great teacher and I can tell he would have a blast explaining it all.

I actually read his book years ago. I used it to get one of my co-workers into physics who didn't happen to be much of a reader and even he said he was super intrigued.
What you're seeing in this clip is the same way he's explaining everything in his book. He just goes into more detail. But the general gist is the same - he's using heroes and their powers as reference points and then explains concepts of physics this way. I'd recommend it wholeheartedly; if you liked this clip, go and check out his book. 🙂

When any science can be linked to our phisical world that science become interesting. It doesn't matter if it's Literature or Social Studies. But it needs to be interesting if don't nobody will remember it.

One thing I think he got wrong is the part in Black Panther at 14:34. He mentions Shuri using a hard light hologram to control the car, but that's not what it is. The solid parts Shuri is interacting with come from a pool of sand like vibranium that can take the form of solid objects, and a hologram of the car itself forms around the physical components. I think they actually do refer to it as a vibranium sand table or something similar at some point in the movie.

Yeah, all the hard points are actual physical objects.
It’s essentially a driving simulator rig, but with a hologram that I don’t think is purely there to give the driver a quick idea of where the vehicle’s corners would extend in the real-world environment.
I can tell that whoever did the editing for this video had a lot of fun haha.

This professor is GREAT. Smart, informative, and with a sense of humor!! I've always been interested in physics and quantum mechanics, but my math skills SUCK. If I had a teacher that could have made it this interesting I might have become an engineer!!! GREAT guest!!!
Dude is super forgiving with his ratings as compared to other experts they brought in. Kinda interesting that it's the science/mathematics people that are more open & optimistic of the fantastic elements in film.
I love how this physicist talks with 100% accuracy on both physics theories and MCU lore. He does a better job of getting these details right than most TH-cam “critics.”

Take any serious physics book and try to understand the phenomena he explained from it and you'll see why I wrote that.

You seldom see this combination in a person but it definitely makes sense. To analyze superheroes movies as how they relate to realistic science I think would end up a pyrrhic victory but I feel he directed his focus to the wins even when they proved totally fictional giving rooms for lots of "COULD" and "IMPROBABILITY".
Overall, I like his enthusiasms and truthfulness, the glow in his eyes are something to take away. And how he analyses concept that you wouldn't even pay attention to like Loki's attempt on Thanos's life linking it back to the use of the tessaract in the first avenger is superb. It tells me, Man knows his onions.
Damn, I always deduced that Carol Denvers was just a very well preserved 50 year old, consequence of her powers maybe, but this time dilation explanation makes perfect sense.

In reality he just would have pulled a bunch of bricks out of the buildings and the train would have lost almost no velocity. That's always the problem with superheroes. Hulk can grab two continents and smash them together? Why not just two handfulls of rock or dirt. Superman (DC) can stop crashing planes/rockets/etc by grabbing them without just punching a hole in them?
I would be much delighted if they can manage to find a magician to breakdown Dr Strange's movie

Yeah, I have his book on science of superheroes. Beyond physics he spends a lot of time talking about the comics history. Really nice!
You're not even close to wrong. It's a little weird to explain, but there are plenty of little moments and details that he references or brings up that most experts who don't really love Marvel, or just sorta watch the odd one when it comes out, wouldn't pick up on, or forget, or whatever. It's something that irks me, as a super-attentive moviegoer, when I watch some of these 'experts break down' videos. This guy? Not even once. Every time I thought to myself, 'ugh, of course he's not gonna bring up that', he freaking next thing he said was addressing it.
He had a big smile on his face the whole time.

This is awesome! Finally an explanation about the physics in super hero movies/comics that is fun to watch and actually makes us learn a lot about physics itself!!
Of the Insider rating film scenes, this is definitely a favorite of mine. I taught physics to gifted students, so it's a subject close to my heart, and brain. It helps that this gentleman happens to be brilliant, with a wonderful, warm sense of humor. I've got to add his book about the physics of superhero movies to my reading list!

I think I recall reading his book or a variation of it. What always stood out to me from the book I read was the note that speedsters like Flash and Quicksilver would need to be nearly indestructible or wrap themselves in some sort of force field when moving or the dust particulates in the air would hit with enough force when they ran to rip them apart.
It's a weird feeling when a physics professor tells you that sure, cybernetic helmet, no problem.
Beyond that; this video is adorable.
You can tell he's both a physics and a Marvel fan: he doesn't try to find "hey, that'll never work stuff", but to find a way to explain how something might work.
Which is exactly how invention works: looking at an impossible idea and going, "well, for that to be _possible_ , you would need ..."

I've been studying quantum mechanics as a hobbie since 2014 when I was 14 years old. it ALWAYS bothers me that I try to explain the physics behind some movies and my friends go "but the talking racoon is fine??" and I'm like CMON FORGET THE RACOON

@@reptilesceptile1035 Yes, but it is being used in reality and reality is bound by the laws of physics. And these laws imply that there are consequences. One can still question the magic as in what kind of direct and indirect effects it has on reality.
For example, using Avada Kedavra spell in Harry Potter universe kills someone. You need not question how it does that (magic), but you can ask exactly what part of the body it effects to kill the person. Like, does it stop the neurological function, the heart, or something else?
There can be a lot of questions to be asked like this despite the nature of magic, but I hope that conveys my point.

That is possible. Physics allows that. Though probability of that event is so small, it is considered impossible.
Pretty much same thing goes about pseudoscience they put into comic books. Something with a similar name is possible. But absolutely not what is shown in the cartoon.
So despite "that could happen", no, it is not realistic.

This was an awesome presentation! I like it even more than my old book "The Physics of Star Trek"!
Any physicist could have been shown scenes and then be asked to discuss them from a scientific standpoint. However, I think we all agree this guy genuinely knows his Marvel movies and characters. It was great to watch such a well rounded guy give this lecture.

I love how much this man loves comics. It hurts my heart when experts sneer at fiction or are overly cynical (we get it, we know it's fantasy too). But the fact he's a renowned physicist and a huge nerdy fan is Grade A in my book!
Yup, he's pure awesomeness personified! I wouldn't bunk so many physics classes in college if he was my professor, that's for sure! I'm pretty sure he makes physics lectures pretty entertaining...

yeah he must be a real fan because he was really generous, like in ant man, the fact that it shrinks without altering the mass or that he ahrinks below an atom's sizedeserves a 1, and the 3 nuclear power plants are no better than a 3, being realistic, only spiderman and the last one go avobe 5
