Prince of Orange Philodendron Propagation & Care || Favorite Philodendron!

  • Here I have an over-grown and very leggy prince of orange philodendron that badly needed to be chopped and restarted. My Prince of Orange is a weird one, looks more like a Mccolleys Finale but in spring it does put out the vibrant orange leaves when it receives natural sunlight. Tricolor? Doesn't matter which of the philodendron erubescens types it is, what I do in this video is relevant to the Prince or Orange, Mccolleys Finale and Red Sun as well as many of the other clumpers.
    These Philodendrons don't need to be repotted all that often, generally I just give them a repot when they aren't looking their best and I know the growing media is no longer ideal, or if they are seeming root-bound.
    Because I was dealing with a philodendron with leggy growth, I decided to chop it and propagate it. This will allow a fresh start for the growth for of the plant and will look much better than staking it.
    I also chopped the stem up and talked about propagating philodendron stem cuttings.

    Wish I had seen this last year!!! I didn't know what to do when one of mine jumped the pot so I just tipped it over and planted it directly in the ground. Happy to say it survived a low of 37° uncovered and it doing well!!!!

      I meant to talk about their cold hardiness in the video but I cut it for time. Mine has taken frost on multiple occasions and shown no damage from it. They're so sturdy!

    Hola Jeff,
    Great chop and prop. Imperial Red grows similar. I had two rosettes climbing out of 20" terracotta pot. Growing a Prince of Orange now since last summer. Moonlight Philodendron also same.
    Thanks for the care tips! 👍🏾

      Moonlight is a great one! I love the lime green foliage!

    Enjoyed seeing you doing another video on Prince of Orange. Would you try and do a short followup later to show how the cutting you took came out. I would be so afraid to cut up one like that. You mentioned McColley’s Finale I actually came across one last week and bought it. The research says it has more red than orange leave so can’t wait to see how they come out.

      @TropicalPlantParty  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! It can be scary chopping them, but I figured it's the best option and if it doesn't take then it's not the end of the world, they sell them everywhere around here. As long as it's not left to dry for long while rooting there shouldn't be any issues.

    Hi Jeff! I somehow missed this video. That's a really pretty philo. I may have to watch for one. I'm looking forward to seeing how the propagating goes. Thank you so much for sharing!

    This video really gave me the inspo to deal with my own two Prince of Orange. Been putting it off for an entire year now 🙄.

      Oh mine has been in a need of the chop for at least 2 or 3 years now. They are troopers!

    Just giving an obligatory comment for the algorithm since I don't have much to say about Philos. But if you guys up north want to take some of your people back, that would be great. The next 30 days are going to be horrible here with spring break starting and the weather being unusually warm. sigh.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  ปีที่แล้ว

      😅😆🤣 that would be such an obnoxious thing to have to deal with every year. Adding the chaos what is already a mess on the roads bc of how people drive in Florida.

    I bought a reduced unnamed plant at my local nursery, I thought it may be the prince of orange, I now think it’s McCaulys finale.❄️💚🙃

    I’m thinking about starting some snapdragon seeds today. I can’t remember though if they need cold stratification. I guess I’ll have to do a consult with Professor Google today before I plant them. ❄️💚🙃

    Hi there. Thank you for sharing. I currently have a wonky Prince of Orange, and I'm so scared to chop it. How long does it take for the top cut to settle in and start growing roots again? Does it have lots of leaf loss? How's your repotted Prince of Orange doing now?

  • @xenic101
    @xenic101 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I picked up an assorted philodendron a couple of years ago that I think is a McCaulys Finale, The newer leaves have been a little deformed and I'm waiting to see what happens when I move it outside, but now I know it could be upset about the pole it's growing up.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt that it's "upset" about the pole. Just perhaps redirecting resources to establish a new growth form.

    That looks like a Red Sun or Rojo Congo? Prince of Orange has orange new leaves which turn green as they mature. It also grows into a clump so there’s no need for staking. If it gets too heavy you can prune it.

    @lindylou3519 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve had mine for about 5 years & like you prefer it to stand like a rosette & not a moss pole. (I need to chop mine, as well…it’s stem is wonky.)

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  ปีที่แล้ว

      All just a matter of preference really, but I agree they look better just standing on their own. They can look nice on a pole if given really great growing conditions though. I like to keep it simple.

    I just had to top dress all of my plants with mosquito bits. I’m starting Ranunculus in the house which are growing but so is the population of fungus gnats😡❄️💚🙃 The fungus gnats were completely gone until I started growing Ranunculus again 😡❄️💚🙃

      They're so annoying! I've been using powdered bacillus thuringiensis and adding it to my watering can for the last two indoor growing seasons and it has worked wonders!

    Dude, the fake (loading icon) multiple times (click-bait) is not okay. I'm on Verizon Fios 1GB service. I can't watch your vids if this continues; Just saying.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is no fake loading icon. What would the point of that be? Why would someone make their videos harder to watch? Try and set the playback resolution to, "auto" under the settings option in the bottom right-hand corner when that happens. If that doesn't work then select the lowest resolution and see what happens.
