    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a pretty rugged setup that leans on the heavier side that can be replaced mid season without breaking the bank. Uglystik big water 9ft with okuma 9/10 reel. No specific fly line necessary. 17lb mono main line with a 4ft long 20lb mono leader line with a Russian river fly. I use split shots for weight and adjust accordingly for the water conditions. 🎣😎

  • @DJBethRidgeway
    @DJBethRidgeway 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hey man I’ve been watching quite a few of your videos trying to learn as much as I can before coming up there this summer from Colorado. We’re going to fish the Russian for a couple days right at the end of July, hoping to catch that second run of reds in full swing. How far up the trail to the falls are you in this video? I know we’re not going to be able to completely get away from other people but would definitely prefer not to be combat fishing.

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I doubt you’d be doing any combat fishing at the end of July on the Russian. The sockeye will be turning red and spawning by then, not all of them but most will already be beyond the fishing area and at the water falls. The Kenai River will be loaded with its run by then which will relieve the pressure on the Russian. I’m about 2 miles from the start of the trailhead parking area. It’s about 3/4 mile from the water falls.

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make sure you're using sharp Russian River flies, preferably the Russian flies that have a kink in the shank that turns the tip back more. These aren't necessary but may help you out some. AND most importantly Set the hook hard! Gotta keep that line tight!🎣 I keep my drag on the loose side so the fish can take what it needs and prevents the hook from tearing out.

    Are you also a fishing guide ? What months / dates you were there ?

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I’m not a pro guide. I like to leave the fun in it. The Russian River opens the 2nd week of June. The river is usually full of sockeye by this time and they stay chrome color for about a month. You can fish it all summer if you want but the other Kenai Peninsula rivers get their own runs of sockeye by then and are easier, bigger and cheaper to catch.

      @@alaskasmallcraftadventures Good on you for just helping people out, but, an Amazon book wouldn't be a bad why to earn tackle here and there. $5 an ebook. Anyway, I survived my first trip of combat fishing at Rotary Park. I was stuck with the boardwalk as I forgot my waders had a leak from last year. Got my 3 the night before it turned to 6. I was to damn tired and soaking wet from the rain to stay. They are sitting in dry brine now. I'll smoke it tomorrow and head out on Tues for my 6. I couldn't find College Hole. I thought it was this one gravel road and I missed the right angle and ended up in the ditch!! Neighbor came out with his tractor. Is it there right at the college parking lot? Says it's closed. I fished on circle hooks; didn't have one snag. Gamekatsu Nautilus 3/0. Try em out. I wish all those that combat fish would use them. Tough to get someone caught in the ear with one of those . They catch the lip quite well!
