My dog has been with us for two weeks, and he won’t play at all. He did fetch with his previous owner but now he has no interest in any toys. I literally bought him any type of toy known to man kind. He is two years old, a toy poodle. 😢
@@Tamar.Langbordit’s more than likely your new dog to you needs more time to settle in and adjust to the new situation and that can take time….don’t put pressure on and give them time to get to know you and the new surroundings. 👍
I'm currently taking care of a friend's little terrier mix for a couple hrs each day and she's a super easy little dog. I'm trying to apply these concepts to her for fun. She loves chasing after her squeaky toys when I throw them but isn't "interested" per se in bringing them back but she runs back to me excitedly. I'm just laughing with her and tossing each upon her return then going to collect them and repeat. I'm assuming this is kind of what you are saying? Quesion though: if I move on to gradually teach her how to do a proper fetch, will doing this first make it harder to teach her to bring them back later? Interesting bit of info: my friend told me her dog's sleeping with her toys now (omg! I got teary bcuz if it's because she had lots of fun, that's TOOOO precious!! 😂) TIA!
Hi, Great video. My dog isn't into toys but after watching the video we saw he really liked playing a hide and seek\chase game any ideas on how to build upon this and any similar games you can suggest? Thanks
That’s fantastic…..if he loves chase/hide and seek you can use a chase toy on a walk and every now and then get him to play a game of chase with you around a natural obstacle like a bench or a bush….or if you’re with friends or family get one of them to hold him while you sneak behind a tree with a toy….and call him so he can come and find you. A great way to start that is in the house …..always adjust games to a level you can play within your own physical abilities….have fun 🤩
We got our dog about a month ago. She is very timid and anxious but she has gotten a lot better with time. She shows signs of being abused from her previous owners. How do we make her feel safe but also play with her. She loves to play with other dogs but she hardly ever plays with us and almost never plays on her own. She will carry toys in her mouth and rip up toys, but other than that nothing. When she plays with other dogs sometimes she will carry rope or toys in her mouth but she doesn’t share toys very nicely with other dogs. She loves to pounce and jump around with other dogs and run with them! Any tips or advice would be wonderful :)
The trick is to really really tune in to the style of play she really does prefer….if it’s carrying and pouncing…focus on that…a chase style tug can be fantastic to get that style of play going….search for chaser tug here www.tug-e-nuff.co.uk/?ref=GENIUSK9
Nellie doesn't seem to like any particular play. She will chase a tuggy for a minute but only to grab it so she can lay and chew it. She can also get quite rough and end up grabbing my arm or hand instead, usually treating the skin!
There's lots of parts to tug play that can get in the way of you both enjoying it....Nellie's 'target' of the toy, you activating the toy again to continue the game...those steps alone can make a big difference...start with short play sessions and stop before she loses interest ..play little and often and grow the game gradually. Keep the toy out of the way in between games to build desire too....all these are little steps that can make a real difference 💕
She also only plays in the home but when outside she will just bite me instead and won’t stop biting me & going at my arms and hands it makes me look and feel like a bad owner 😅
@@Zephyr.dakota it does sound like a combination of managing arousal levels, teaching good self control and permission cues really help….combined with learning the mechanics of teaching how to target the toy and not you…💕
If you’re dog used to play happily and doesn’t any more, please do me one favour and make sure they are not experiencing any kind of pain. Check teeth, ears, paws, nails, back, legs, toes, elbows, knees, tail… Often it’s very subtle and difficult to spot easily but a change in behaviour is a good first sign…
One other thing you could do, is request to join my free community on Facebook‘Genius K9 Community’ and post a video on there with a question and I can take a look for you.
What if your dog only plays when you are not looking? My dog literally stops playing with something if I look - He goes to another room. He does not like toys. He has one he likes... But he just sleeps with it.
Watch HOW he loves to play best and use that style of play to turn it into a style of interactive play you can do together 👍 start slowly at first and build it over time 👍👍👍
I just rescued a bully puppy that had parvovirus. She doesn’t want to play with my boyfriend or me, just with our other dog. She has signs that she was abused because she can’t poop if we are watching her, also if we try to pet her head she would put her head down. What can we do? We have so many toys and she only plays with them when the other dog is playing also. When we get into the game she stops and sits :( she is 3 months old.
So sorry for the delay seeing your comment…..take you time building the confidence and connection with your new puppy. It’s way easier for them to feel happier with another dog and it can take time to feel ok with you…come and join the free Genius K9 community on Facebook. We’ve got another bully mix puppy pretty much the same age and you can see more there
Let me know if any of these tips will help you 💕

You’re welcome. I’m so happy it helped
She likes playing but without toys 😭🥹 I want her to try all her toys but she doesn’t want them
What does she love to play most that doesn’t involve toys?
