  • Since Jess has a goal to be as independent as possible, we never stop teaching her independent living skills. In this video, Val is teaching Jess how to cook grits. Please note all of the smaller lessons within the big one. Sometimes, Jess is really into cooking. Other times, like the rest of us, cooking seems more like a chore. This video contains varying levels of enthusiasm from Jess. Overall, she did a great job.

Jess is 33-years-old, autistic, and blind. Her favorite topics of conversation include getting a new dog, her friend Keely, her Aunt Sue, and cousin Donna. Jess collects CD’s of children’s music, cards, coloring books, and has a small collection of used up disposable cameras that she refuses to get developed. Favorite health foods include chicken and rice, chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, chicken biscuits, pepperoni pizza, and hash brown potatoes. Jess has naturally curly hair that she would rather not ever comb, brush, or cut.
Jessica’s multiple disabilities stem from brain damage that occurred in-utero, and from hydrocephalus. In addition to autism and blindness, Jess also has minor fine motor and gross motor deficits. Hannah is Jessica's sister, and Marlow is Jessica's paid support staff (and Hannah's best friend.)

I’m in TN and my Dad and I both liked grits but it was not made at our house. No one else liked them. I moved to LA for 11 years and everyone ate them. 😄 I love them, but I’m not supposed to have much salt and to me without salt, lots, they just aren’t the same. Hope y’all enjoyed your breakfast! How did Nonnie get the name Nonnie? Is that a common nickname for Grandmom in the south? What do you guys call Grandpop? I'm from South Philly and we called ours Mommom and Poppop. When I was in the Air Force I was stationed at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana...ever since then I've been fascinated with the language traditions/nuances of the good ole USA :)

    • @Shaping_Serenity

"Nonnie" is how Jess started saying "mommy" so we assigned that name to Nonnie and taught her to call me "mama". We were going to teach Jess to call Granddad "Papa" but her ability to make the "d" sound came along and we changed it to "dad dad" and morphed it into "Granddad".
