    From a practical side, porting definitely works. From a tactical side, the biggest draw backs would be the excessive flash and (for me at least) more places to allow dirt to get into.

    • @loves2shoot
      @loves2shoot ปีที่แล้ว +1

      spoken like someone who has no experience with shooting ported guns.....
      Did you hear JM report on testing the "flashiest powder" he could find and it NOT affecting his night vision AT ALL ... and then also the fact that modern pistol powers have a flash signature significantly less? JM lives on his own range and has reloaded more ammo (even tho he is a sponsored shooter now) and has done us the favor of testing the so called flash problem. Realize, porting only has a chance to affect the shooters vision. Tactically, flash is still there for any tactical disadvantage that you mind can make up.... bad guys are going to see the flash regardless ... and the flash is VERY muted with all modern ammo!
      Now, tell me again how dirt is going to affect anything other than your cleaning efforts ....

      @@loves2shootJerry is talking about his perspective and his needs. I can think of many reasons why I don't want a comp on my gun in my line of work. I have an open division race gun myself so I have a good amount of experience using a comp, and I love shooting it, but for work I don't nor would I want a comped gun. You DO lose reliability unless you're running hot ammo. You could tweak the springs to your comp but then again you're setting it up for one load. When you travel to other countries you'll get issued a stock Glock or something along those lines. And even if I could bring my barrel/comp with me, I have no guarantee I'll be given the right ammo. And most comps, at least the ones that work well, tend to add quite a bit of length and might not be compatible with issued holsters.
      Also I've had to use my gun indoors before, already have a good amount of hearing damage from being in the service, and I don't need/want anymore. A comped 9mm with hot ammo (as it should be) is louder and more concussive than a 16 inch barreled AR in 5.56 from my experience. Again, different people, different needs, different tools

    One of the reasons for carry or duty guns not having ported barrels is fear. There is the possibility of burning powder grains or other objects being ejected from those ports during cqb, when the muzzle is right below someone's face. That possibility is quite small, but administrators at police departments and departments of corrections have to worry about "sir, officer Jones was at firearms qualification and some burning powder grains went behind his safety glasses. BTW, the unions president and attorney are on the phone ".

    It seems like shooting sports and training schools have a bunch of good guys like Jerry miculek. I'm glad to see so many guys who are willing to sit and chat about shooting for whatever reason (plinking, matches, self defense, war..etc) and give people some tips and stories from their experience. Damn good bunch of guys we got here.

      (they say that new metal M&P is the best one of them all) Prolly why Jerry added tungsten guide rod to his, the extra weight makes it shoot flatter and with less felt recoil.

    I use a Vortex Venom on my Ruger Mk4 because I can, I use a Holosun 507K on my P322 because I have to. The larger window makes the dot a lot easier to find if my draw isn't perfect, and I just like 3 moa dots. I can't say I could tell the difference in a 'blind test', but the two 3 moa dots I have look better to me than the two 2 moa dots I have, all difference brands or styles.

  • @barryscott6222
    @barryscott6222 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One possible reason to not use ports on a tactical pistol is because of the potential uses it might be used. Likely, not with full ear and eye protection that a completion shooter will use when they are shooting. Also, you might not be in a good shooting posture. You might have the gun jammed up against your face when firing in a difficult self defense situation. If not using the sights while taking shots, the ports could be angled back towards your face. I bet you you'll only ever to that once, if you get a blast of hot gas in the eyes.

    I wonder what lube Jerry switched to for those cold events? Besides the flash/powder exit excuse for not porting , I always heard the amount of crap that gets in ported barrels in everyday carry and dirty dusty muddy tactical life would be a big detriment to the gun firing well and scars the parts etc. .

    Ported barrels can distract the shooter during very close point shooting by splashing muzzle blast and more importantly powder and particulates into the shooters neck and chin. That's really the only thing I have ever heard from people who have been physically tangling with someone or inside a vehicle and shooting while not fully extended out away from the face or body. I have no experience with this but can vouch for the powder and particulates being ejected straight up from barrel ports.

    • @loves2shoot
      @loves2shoot ปีที่แล้ว

      We need to get away from what "could happen" to what is likely to happen..... I'm familiar with this caution as I thought about ported barrel in the early 2000's and heard all of these concerns ... have yet to come across any real life accounts of this happening.

    As I understand, reason why self-defense types don’t like ported barrels is because of the danger factor. If you end up wrestling with a assailant, and you have to shoot them from a hold, you could burn yourself in the process.

      @loves2shoot ปีที่แล้ว

      @@perrytilton5221 You are right! These guys who shoot thousands of rounds a month don't know anything about recoil :/
      BTW, porting is designed to reduce "muzzle flip" ... not recoil. Compensators are diff and normally tame recoil AND muzzle flip. Compensators on a handgun can benefit from testing your handgun/ammo load to ensure it does what it is designed to do and doesn't affect performance. I've never heard of a rifle comp that affected reliability. Rifle comps are chosen/designed to keep the rifle as steady during recoil as possible ... stuff like port angle and direction and size becomes important.
