I am a tremendous fan of Tuba Skinny I can't get enough, but this one takes the gold medal. I have watched and listened to it many many times yet every time my tears flow like Niagara Falls. They are NOT tears of sadness but tears of joy. I say to the group you have made an 85 year old man feel 25 again. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't know what's wrong with those that thumb downed this video. But watching and listening to this makes me wish I were privileged to be there taking this in in person on such a beautiful day. This is the life!
One of the best versions of "Just a Closer Walk with Thou", if not the best, full of sensitivity. I would very much like it to be played the day I leave for a better world.
Surprised but thrilled to hear Tuba Skinny play this. They tend to avoid the tunes that all the other jazz bands play. But even with this one they have so much to teach us: the tempo, the trombone statement of the theme, the lovely harmonising such as Shaye's in the second Chorus, and Erika's wonderful rubatos - in her 'Owl Call Blues' voice. Never heard it performed better.
Only just discovered this wonderful, authentic band that is Tuba Skinny! I'm telling all my friends about this music - it is so well played and sung. Shaye and Erika are fantastic, but the strength of the group is their ensemble playing. We must support them through this difficult pandemic, and hope that they with come to play in the UK in 2021. Keep playing Tuba Skinny !! We LOVE it!
As a 50 year old male, is it too late and strange to want to be a groupie for these guys? 😬😉 Because I could listen to them all day long and find nothing but peace and contentment! Thank you TS!!!
At 70 I say it is never too late .Son If you have never experienced the French Quarters , the Street performers, Bars and the chaos of New Orleans La. All I ask is What is holding you back ?
I am 81 and still play this kind of stuff. I just wish I could play just the once with Tuba Skinny. It reminds me so much of the mid 1950s when I used to sit in with embryo trad bands drinking scrumpy and smoking Woodbines (under age)!
I am 75 and as we are in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis at the moment I am sat writing out my Last Will and Testament and I too have listed this as one of the tunes to be played at my funeral. A superb band and Erika's rendition of this is spine-tingling. Would love to hear them live but don't think they ever come to the UK.
I am 75 and in lockdown. That term would have meant nothing when you posted this comment. I have listened to this many times and here I am again. God bless you, I hope you are keeping safe.
In my 75 year love affair with Dixieland Jazz - and any music from NOLA - I don't think I've ever heard a performance better than this one. Wow... is it over already? I wish it were longer. Thanks. Ed
I just happened upon this video. Never heard of Tuba Skinny before but immediately I was captivated. Excellent group of musicians. Such a lazy tempo which grabs you and won't let you go.
Australia here - thanks a million for "the great American songbook". Whty an amazing culture you have. OK, kudos over.....go.......create more!!!!!! MAGA!
Luxury to be awake in the middle of the night, 5 000 miles away from you (Sweden), and enjoy what you are playing. You are all great. As someone else wrote: "my father would have loved this" but that goes for me as well (I am 67).
Given this tune, Barnabus Jones is the winner of the most appropriately dressed Tuba Skinny band member award. I just returned yesterday from the two Hillsdale shows given in New York. The country-side around the Taconic State Parkway leads you to some of the most lovely and well hidden of New York State places. Not since my many years ago trips to New Orleans and the occasions to hear the Neville Brothers have I been happier to stumble upon such wonderful music.
@@albertmotz9534 And Bessie Smith was singing in that style since before Willie was born. But they all do it oh so well. And I'll bet Erika has some Bessie Smith recordings!
It is even better being there Alan, especially when we heard this remarkably moving number. Next year I will go to see the Mayor of NOLA personally and ask that the Digitalalexa team is given the Freedom of NOLA for all their fabulous filming - which has probably resulted in thousands of people from around the world being attracted to the city to hear fantastic music such as this! Freedom of NOLA for Tuba Skinny too! All those in favour? Just write to the Mayor and tell him!
I have seen them three times in NOLA and I ran into the band in Germany while they were touring Europe. I wish Shayne would smile more often. She always looks like she is either mad at the world or has an Excedrin headache.
I like the way she comes in half a bar from the the head of the phrase then lingers at the end - superb timing to have you sitting on thhe edge of your seat in suspence -her voice matches the instruments
Just bloody stunning .. has 'Closer Walk' ever been closer to heaven ? No wonder it's at over 700,000 views. Only Jason Lawrence on 6 string banjo & Robin Rapuzzi on washboard , w/ Todd Burton's tuba backing it, but each a perfect compliment to those glorious horns - Craig Flory, Clarinet - the Shaye Cohn, cornet - smooth Barnabus Jones on tbone. And Erica Lewis lets her heart sing !!! Ten years ago they dreamed they wanted a 'brass band'; five years ago, a sunny day busking in New Orleans.
I just recently discovered this amazing group. I feel extremely lucky for having done so. This particular selection always brings on the tears, but they are tears of joy. I am amazed by the people walking by who are completely oblivious to these magnificent performances. There are those who are so mixed up in those daily little messes that they call their lives they can't appreciate anything. They have my sympathy. I'm not crying. I have something in my eye.😢
I am 85 and even though I plan to live for many more years my kids know that I want this one played at my funeral.

are you still with us? Jay
Have you ever seen a new Orleans Jazz Funeral? That's how I would like to have a funeral.
@@joesurfer9754 "Second Line Music"
I hope that will be a long way off yet. However, if you do finally decided to kick it, then please don't forget to tip the band.
The best thing about New Orleans, is you walk along and find this traditional music ,and you know you came to the right place.
Don't know what's wrong with those that thumb downed this video. But watching and listening to this makes me wish I were privileged to be there taking this in in person on such a beautiful day. This is the life!

I really love this woman’s voice.
So deep voice that I could hear Joe Watkins of George Lewis band coming through.

Thank the Lord for Tuba Skinny
Let´s praise the menbers of Tuba Skinny.
I’d rather thank their natural talent
Tuba Skinny > Grealish
Amen, Brother!
From a BLUES fan totally agree
Bravo tubaskinny and the internet allowing us to beautiful music
If you don't love this band & they're music you are dead inside. LOVE them all!
What a band, but that voice: No mic, recorded by a cell phone at a distance, and yet still angels weep.
I think this (Closer Walk with Thee) is my favorite of all they play. I keep coming back to hear it again and again.
One of the best versions of "Just a Closer Walk with Thou", if not the best, full of sensitivity. I would very much like it to be played the day I leave for a better world.
*Thee
@@BDUBZ49 To elaborate, "thee" is objective, like "him"; "thou" is nominative, like "he".
So deep voice that I could hear Joe Watkins of George Lewis band coming through.
Satchmo is without a doubt the best ever on this song

How I wish my Dad was here to hear this.
my dad, gone 40 years, used to live on Royal street right where I've seen this group play numerous times. Love that Dixieland sound.
I wish my mom was!

Beautiful rendition! The brass harmony is second to none!
I love the nonchalant way they the make fantastic music
Just demonstrates their amazing talent
Your use of the word "nonchalant" is the perfect descriptor to define one of the most unique talents of this very talented group.
That clarinet player rates up there with Pete Fountain. love them all.

Love the dented trombone , it must be why it sounds so great!! (I play an undented Horn; probably why no one listens to me)

The way Erika sings this is amazing. Its like a beat behind the way I've heard it so many times. Really beautiful even with the garbage trucks..

My favorite rendition of this song. They're the best!
They're focused on the song rather than audience response. That's the problem for most bands.

Her sexiness is visceral. Her appeal is instinctive, like a candle flame to a moth. Yeah, I guess she'll do.😊
