I love how the video is named "Is All Fair In Love And War?" and 40sec in he already talking about pencils and video games..... and somehow we still get to the point of the video
ikr vsause is an ADD person's dream... and i am ADD lol
What he is trying to say about the video games still relate to the topic though which is amazing if you think about it, but I dont get what the pencil stone stuff he said means when relating to the video.
I was like......wtf? pencils? videogames? What drugs did he use, because I Want some
The video game bit made a bit of sense, because of how mook behaviour is following a certain "convention" despite being not completely efficient. Michael talks about easiest way to victory. The pencil bit is what I don't get.
LBM Goneplaid He said "Even if you write something with a pencil, it is technically still written in stone" or something like that. This might refer to a multitude of things he talked about like "laws of physics" or he might mean it a bit more metaphorical, like, we treat the laws of love/war as if they were written in stone, even though they aren't.
You can actually do a lot with the simple mention of the pencil. Stuff like this is why he's a genius.

...and that's why storm troopers miss all the time, BECAUSE THEY'RE IN A MOVIE.
That's taking it too far though
Because they need to keep the targets alive.
Yeah, but if they miss absolutly all the time, it takes out the element of danger and thus, we do not feel any anxiety or fear for the protagonists. For it to be interesting, you have to make the ennemies do bad things a few times (preferably at the start of the movie) or make you think that they are very dangerous. You wouldn't feal any fear for a man with a chainsaw fighting a tree
Has science gone too far?
if all the james bond villains fight against an equal number of storm trooper, there would be 1% casuality each side after 5 day of shooting.
All casuality would be accidental suicide

Ahh yes, pen or pencil is mightier than the sword. That means pencil could be used to write a love letter to a soulmate, or could be used to write a peace treaty to another country instead of a sword and hence, could be easily used to win a war. Hence, proved that everything is fair in love and war.
I wish he would have mentioned how often the rules of war are and have been constantly, blatantly broken or ignored. It would have been interesting to examine how rules of war most likely will be broken such the usage of nuclear weapons. The Geneva Conventions clearly state that the use of nuclear weapons is prohibited, yet the entire duration of the Cold War was based on the idea of nuclear proliferation and the fear of total, atomic annihilation.
Funny how that works.
+Josh Bonham But nuclear weapons werent used.
And perhaps these laws are the only reason it remained a Cold War and not a very, very Hot War.
Nuclear weapons have never been used since Hirosima, despite the fact that the countries which have nuclear weapons (USA, Russia etc etc) have been in a ton of wars since.
+Fevos Man they have been used but as tests not as a weapon. The main reason we didnt all die in the cold war was M.A.D (mutually assured destruction) Russia came very close to bombing China as it was afraid of them gaining nuclear technology, they even went to America to ask them if they would blow them up if they did and USA said they wouldn't. Fortunately Russia didn't do that but it shows how useless nukes are if both sides have em

The most interesting rule to me is that you are not able to use hollow points in warfare. I find that weird especially when you are encouraged to use them in self defense as a civilian.
scrubslover9 hollow points actually do less damage
RiderZero it’s because in war using something like a hallow point is immoral because it’s less lethal, but also much more to remove. This then clogs up the enemies medical hospitals.
In self defense since it’s an effective option and it’s generally less lethal it’s seen as the best option.
Gustavus Adolphus that’s not really true. Hollow points and other non fmj bullets are generally more effective at stopping aggressors and are more lethal due to fragmentation and expansion. Fmj is used to both lessen lethality and increase light barrier penetration. The political goal of combat is to get the enemy to submit while causing the least “permanent damage” as possible. That goal is only applied to the greater infantry as a whole and It should be noted that non fmj bullets are used by special operation snipers/marksmen due to their greater lethality and increased knockdown power. You may find it interesting that law enforcement in the United States is not affected by the laws of war and that they consistently gravitate towards soft point and hollow point bullets for their greater expansion/stopping power
RiderZero Actually, you are allowed to but the hollow point has less penetration than FMG bullets so is worse than FMG against armor.
Bugga Boy The U.S.A couldn't give a fuck about the laws of war. They've already violated many international laws, and the U.N hasn't done shit about it.

I loved the lighting used in the last part of the video! The outward zoom at the end was also a great addition to Michael's excellent performance. The lighting and zoom together made it seem as if he was floating away, in empty space.
Damn that second to last background music really pulled my heart strings

unless you're gay.
then there's far too many.

That’s marriage. You don’t have to love someone to get marred to them. You can love whoever you want, even if it’s not supported by the population. No government can come and tell you “you can not love this person”. I guess they could, but they physically can not change your chemicals in your brain to love.

Most of vsauce’s videos, especially this one really accurately show how the thought processes of ADHD minds work

I personally don’t think ADHD is correctly diagnosed- I think us having these thoughts are just curious thinking and people often call the most intelligent people crazy for thinking new
I don't think adhd is real lowkey
One thing I've always wondered, what happens if someone breaks one of these "rules of war"? What is the other side going to do... Wage war against them even though they are already at war? Or is this entire thing just a game that is being regulated so that it is in a way fair? I find it ridiculous that these rules exist, so many wars could end so easily if only we'd throw these pointless things out the window. War is war, and it is without a doubt evil and inhumane. I don't understand how killing someone isn't more evil than abusing the weather, torturing, etc. Honestly they are all evil and wrong, so why not just create a new rule that says you cannot kill each other? You might as well while you're at it, otherwise like I said before... That war is simply a game, a political game. It's exactly like chess, each piece can only move a certain way. A Bishop cannot ram through the board and shatter the king, no it and all the other pieces must follow the rules in order to obtain victory. Or die trying. So if these pieces are going to die anyway then why not break the rules? These ethics of war seem so pointless.
If a nation breaks these rules (Geneva Convention), then all the other signatory nations will, or should, declare war on that nation. If, for example, the US would break the Geneva Convention, it would be removed from the UN and would now be at war with it. If the cover-up fails, that is.
That's my understanding, at least.
So basically we're just hoping everyone abides by the these rules? Sounds... great...
Nemenon
Basically, yeah.
Nemenon Well, yes, that is how all international politics work. There is no global power capable of enforcing all the rules nations agree upon, so if you break them then either the others go together to punish you in some way (war, trade embargoes, exclusion from international organizations/programs, cutting relations in general, etc) or they just sit there and say how disappointed they are. This is part of the reason nations like the US and China can get away with so much shit, they're so big and important no one really wants to mess with them even if they do whatever they please most of the time.
The Geneva Convention states that the soldiers who follow the rules are lawful combatants. If they were to, say, not take prisoners or pretend to surrender or otherwise break the rules of the Geneva convention, they would no longer be protected by it. The enemy is no longer obligated to take them prisoner or not torture them or things like that. So really, it's the golden rule.
If an entire country breaks the Geneva Convention... well, none have really. But groups of people can and will. Hence the whole war on terror thing going on now.
Here's something on the whole matter in a more informal prose than wikipedia or the like: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/UsefulNotes/TheLawsAndCustomsOfWar

Rule number one: War in any form is totally illegal.

In video games, if the bad guys didn't have patterns then they would be impossible to defeat.
Sylph Natural Pretty much. It's not hard to design a video game where the enemy AI is unbeatable. The computer knows exactly where your character is at all times.
If it was about brute force all the enemies would attack you at the same time to overpower you. The game would be over in seconds.
***** By the way technology is progressing, game designers might make an intelligent AI that can make calculated decisions in how to beat you in a game. Chess was only the first step, now other games will be next.
Sylph Natural
Well given how most games only have one good guy and lots of bad guys a brute force approach would be unbeatable.
Just have all the enemy characters attack the player at the same time.
***** Or make them smart enough to dodge your attacks and counterattack.
i think a patternless video game is just a rage quit game, isnt it? you never can quite guess what the enemy will do until you experience it. but on the subject of smart, one-on-one patternless(ish?) AI combat i think thatd be pretty amazing and fun to play, after all isnt that the fun of multiplayer games?, so if you just stick it in a game without the possibility of multiplayer itd be amazing! (thats in my opinion at least)
love is a human condition,
war is a human invention.
When a vid is just over 10 mins: That son of a ...
When the vid is 9:59 mins long: What a bloody legend!!
Video Idea: What is the evolutionary purpose of laziness? Clearly it wouldn't be around if it didn't have some sort of benefit. The other day I took out the trash barefoot in below freezing weather because it was preferable to having to tie my shoes. The must be a reason humans would do this. My hypothesis is that laziness leads to innovation.
Kyle Renfrey I think you hit the nail on the head. In the days before plentiful food and security, unnecessary exertion could easily get you killed.
I'm no scientist but according to what I've read somewhere about this topic it's that it has to do with our brain "reward" system. When you achieve something you receive a dose of dopamine and/or other hormones which give you a feeling of satisfaction. This system is basically what drives humans and all animals to actually "do stuff".
Lazyness comes from your brain "calculating" that the effort you'll have to make to do a specific action will be bigger than the amount of satisfaction you'll take from it, or that it'll take too much time to actually get the "reward" and you would find other quicker ways to satisfy yourself in the meanwhile.
Some people are lazier than others because people release different amounts of dopamine in consequence of the same action, the reason for that is either genetic or habits that interfere with your reward system (like smoking pot, watching porn, etc which make a huge amount of dopamine easily accessible to you and therefore increase the amount of dopamine you need to feel satisfied, this makes you less disposed to do other actions with lower or harder-to-get dopamine rewards).
So I guess there's no evolutionary purpose for lazyness, it's just a consequence of life getting easier in terms of getting rewards fast. In a hunter-gatherer community, there was no place for lazyness, you either went huntig or starved, now if you don't want to go to the supermarket you can just order pizza.
Actually, It is an evolutionary advantage. We play, we eat, we sleep, but when we aren't doing anything important why waste any energy especially if the task we are to lazy to do can be done later or isn't necessary to our survival.
Andrey Dmitriev that was interesting to read im gonna quit smoking pot and watching porn cuz im becoming lazy as hell
It's your motivation to find the easiest way to do stuff. Pretty simple.
The nature of war is that peacetime rules are off. War is the absence of rules. 'War crime' is an oxymoron. However, ethics and morality always apply.
But war is a process. It's a dispute resolution mechanism, even though it's the worst one, so war is governed by the laws
+Charles Martel I agree. Nations will choose to circumvent the "rules of war" if it serves them to do so.
+Charles Martel Yeah, if I have to fight a war, everything is in the table, I will kill anyone who doesn't serve my purpose, if I lose, I'll be dead anyway, if I win, History is Written by the Victor.
+Batman Playing too much God of War, huh?
+salman sufi Nope, but if I have to fight a war, I'll kill surrendering soldiers, POWs, innocents, and basically anyone who is in my way, because they won't expect it, and cheating in a game with permadeath, is a sure fire way to win.
