    Swimming was my sport when I was younger. Double bonus of great exercise & hot tottie to admire at the same time. I once met a very cute Welsh man in the showers. We decided to go back to my place & he had a van outside so he could drive us there. The funny thing was that when I was directing him to my flat he realised we live in the same block just about four doors down from me. Nicely unexpected & we became quite good friends for a few years.

After texting and writing to each other and sending cute massages with in the shoe, second guy realizes his mistakes & learns sign language to communicate directly with main guy. I really needed someone to explain the chronology and still not quite sure I understand how what happened to him is connected to this young man with whom he swims. The ending is lovely and hopeful.

    Great story. For those of you who didn't understand. William is death; can't hear that why the sound is muffled when he's alone and on the dance floor and being attacked. The dark hair guy doesn't know it. That's why he calls out William's name on the dance floor; but since William doesn't hear him he goes out and gets attacked.
    At the dance floor he drops the shoe with the message from William and the guy see it and realize that he can't hear. So the dark hair guy learns sign language to communicate with William because he's interested in William.

    • @MartinLyko
      @MartinLyko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think the story is bit more complicated.
      William is deaf, that's correct. But not born deaf, I think. There is a retrospective line in the story.
      I believe there are two club scenes - one with the shoe and one with the dancing girl (prob. Williams friend) which happened in the past. This second scene (with the girl, which actually happend first) is when William got beaten after leaving the club. And that's also the moment he was left deaf (notice him touching his bleeding ear and the ear-ringing sound.).
      I thing William was (obviously) traumatized after he got attacked, has PTSD and visiting the club again is triggering for him. That and not actually hearing Thomas shouting at him was the reason why he left the club so quickly the second time (the shoe time).
      Further you are correct about the sign-language-learnign etc.

I still have issues with shorts I guess but with this one I wonder at the Signing because of having a longtime friend born deaf and my feelings of ":Why didn't I try to learn at all?" She didn't want us to sign once she had hearing aides at a very yound age(also in 1978) Yak yak, sorry! It was a a well done and beautiful to look at film and I must watch it again! 4 out 4 Stars!

      @@morningsminion3242 the entire plot of the story. Its not easy to overcome loneliness, but the way the writer had such a twist that was not made apparent to the end was so impactful. Imagine trying to adjust to a big change like that in your life and the emotions behind it: the film did an amazing job on this.

    • @morningsminion3242
      @morningsminion3242 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@excelsiormalik The twist being...the one guy's deafness? I'm not even clear on which one of them was deaf, are you? If it's the guy doing the signing, how does he expect the other to understand him? If it's the other way around, did he study signing for a few months before his confession? All prior communication was by text, writing, reading, etc so how do we know who's deaf?
      What's the big change in someone's life and which character are you talking about?
      Way too much artsy flashback/forward-jump activity in the time-line/story-line to let the audience in on what exactly went down and when and how. And it's the most annoying film-maker's tic of all: artsiness for artsiness' sake, which added nothing to the quality of the flick.
      As I asked below: what does the deaf dude/signer, if he IS the deaf one, have to be sorry for?

    • @excelsiormalik
      @excelsiormalik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@morningsminion3242 for the sorry part: Thomas understood that William left due to some trauma (and some cues give it away) and William had been avoiding him, possibly alluding to William not feeling confident in Thomas' attraction to him. Thomas' response was to let William know he understands and still wants to move forward.
      The main portrayed, William, is deaf due to an incident that occurred after he and his friends left the club one night. If you think along the lines of trauma and then disability, you can follow William's plight of feeling alone since losing his hearing and constant reoccurring thoughts on the night he lost that sense. It's very apparent that Thomas was attracted to William instantly, and left the shoe as a hint to find him (Cinderella thought). When William goes, notice that the sound is not illuminated even though he is in a loud club. The only time is when it flashes back to the night. But when Thomas calls out to William - William is in the midst of a recall and has a traumatic setback and leaves. It's also a cue to Thomas that William must have some issues with the place. Though the picture in the shoe was beautiful. But what made it better was what Thomas did next.
      So when Thomas goes into signing...I thought that was adorable because, even in this day and age, many LGBTQ members with special needs and disabilities are not treated as kindly. Not many people would have continued pursuit. So it was adorable the way Thomas went that extra step. Thats what made it so beautiful, in my opinion. Though I give the director credit...all these cues don't make sense until the end when you realize all these things.

    Nicely done. Thank you. It joins a distinguished list of good gay short films. The list of full length ones is, sadly, a bit shorter. I guess it's a money thing. But probably also tied to a knottier problem of there not being an existing canon of work to add to. It's a bit like children's theatre. Essentially the best creative teams rarely prioritise this area because, well, it's for children rather than adding to a stream of work including Shakespeare, Chekhov and Miller. Somehow it's not "serious", even if it's comedy. Same for gay-themed films. OK for a well-crafted short but hardly the stuff of a full length feature. Is that because we don't have the stories to tell or is it because we don't want to tell the stories? Discuss.

    • @Leftatalbuquerque

      Society has told us from Day 1 that our lives are of little worth and that we are an embarrassment, if not something to be ashamed of. Our lives were lived in the shadows, our clubs and discos and institutions were underground, and then when AIDS hit, we stood alone against the onslaught. Our stories are dismissed; our experiences are deemed unworthy. If we are actors, we are told by our teachers and agents to hide that part of ourselves in order to protect our marketability. Our loves and dreams and dreams of love are ridiculed by our families and are regarded as forgettable and insignificant. Many of us are so damaged by our negligent upbringings that anonymous sex hook-ups are the only things we are capable of, as anything more would require us to be emotionally healthy and secure. Too many of us hide behind alcohol/E/K/meth... and I have dated most of them!! Have I forgotten anything?
      I think the kids of today have an easier time of it - post Love Simon. Anyone over a certain age is still Brokeback Mountain meets Brideshead Revisited.

      and @Leftatalbuquerque You both are right. The reasons/factors you've named could be supplied with one more, to my mind - lack of education. High education propels critical thinking. Without it ppl get stuck in traditional or clerical explanation of the world's functioning, and thus, they can't move on.
      Speaking of 'distinguished list of good gay short films'. In terms of at least prompt 'lecturing' my favs are: Tyler (2020), Him (2019, Iceland) and of course the recent masterpiece "Daddy" (2020, USA).

      The guy was death; the other guy didn't know. When in the dance floor he yelled out his name William; but the guy couldn't hear. That is why the sound is muffled when you see William alone and on the dance floor. The guy realize it when William writes him a note. And the guy is really interested in William so he learns sign language to communicate with William. Beautifully video.

    Don't really get the sequence of events...too much back and forth and in between and sideways and drawings and notes and books and shoes and stuff going on to make sense of it in one viewing and I don't care enough to go back for more. Are their relative chubbiness and bland looks somehow part of the plot? What does the deaf dude have to be sorry for?

      Chubbiness and bland looks? I’m curious what you think that would contribute to the plot? Just wondering what you’re thinking. The gay community is so obsessed with body image and looks. Seems like an odd comment.

      @@oceanlover3530 I'm not the "gay community." I'm one person who posted a comment. Your comment as written is a little difficult to decipher. Are you asking what chubbiness and bland looks would contribute to the plot? If so, that's exactly what I was wondering, so why are you asking me? Are you pretending to not have noticed the actors' physical aspects? Just as overly perfect/beautiful/gym-bunny actors can distract from a story by distancing their characters from the average audience--unless their appearance is germane to the plot--so can overweight, unattractive actors do the same. Anyone who says otherwise is not being honest.
      My favorite actors, male and female, tend to be mildly attractive and healthy-looking, though I can think of a couple who are not. It's their acting talent and skill I'm interested in, but for me their looks can't be an obstacle to connection with an audience, which I found it to be in the case of this short film. As we both know, there are lots of beautiful but lousy actors.
      It's snicker-worthy that you think straight people are unconcerned with looks and physical beauty.

      They’re just average looking guys. The dark haired guy I actually find attractive. I still don’t understand your point. You’re saying they are so extremely bland looking that this somehow distracts you from following the storyline? They look like your typical guys next door. How is that distracting?
      And yes, of course some heterosexual individuals care about how they look to impress, but for most, it’s not their sole reason for living. For a good majority in the gay community it’s all that matters in life. They wake up measuring their biceps. I have never felt a connection to these people. I seek out those I connect to on spiritual and emotional levels. The gay community is very discriminating and unsupportive of those who don’t measure up to their physical standards. It’s not anywhere near the same in the heterosexual world. That’s based on what I’ve seen with all my straight siblings.

      @@oceanlover3530 Especially the bearded actor is seriously overweight with big rolls of fat. You really think that's the "average" body type? These guys aren't "bland," they're unattractive. And yes, that distracts me from the plot because the acting isn't to a level where nothing else matters. That's just me. You don't have to feel the same.
      Wow, it sounds like you really have a hang-up about body issues in the male gay "community." I've been around a long time. There is definitely a large minority of gay men who are body-conscious to the point of obsession. My belief is that those people soak up most of the attention in media of all kinds, but I don't believe they are the majority. I feel no connection to them either, though I have met individual men who fit that stereotype but who are very nice/good people. I also look for the spiritual and emotional connections, even in my friends. You have to look below the surface but there is lots of support for gay folks dealing with the very issues you raise. I see many gay men in committed relationships who are of average looks and weight, on up the scale to obese.
      But I guess I'd agree that if you walk into the average gay bar, overweight and ungroomed, you're going to have a harder time getting laid. I believe the same is true in the straight world. That's just human nature.

      @@morningsminion3242 I wouldn’t say that I have “hang ups” about body issues, rather, I’m disappointed that many gay men treat others who don’t meet their standards, so poorly. We’ve all suffered from discrimination enough as it is without having to deal with it amongst fellow gay “brothers.” I have never had weight problems myself, but I was raised to be a compassionate person and I’ve always reached out to those who may feel a little less “special”. I suppose, in a perfect world, we would all be respectful and accepting of one another. My personal experiences have shown me that we have way too many judgmental people in the gay community. Sorry, I know you don’t like that word, community, but it seems to fit in the context of this conversation. And yes, I do believe gay men, in general, are more judgmental then heterosexual men when it comes to body image. ✌🏻
