Hey Wood I remember there was one that almost like this but its strap to your nose. A TH-camr name I Am WIldcat did a video on South Park The Fractured But Whole by using the Nosulus Rift from Ubisoft.
🤔 That’s a great idea for games that feature food, like cooking mama, although this things applications are limited. But the idea of smelling fresh bakery goods would be satisfying.
The first form of "smell-o-vision" was in the 1990s. There were a couple of TV specials that had a kit you could buy that include scratch-and-sniff stickers, then during certain scenes they'd tell you on the show which sticker to smell.
It was a lot earlier than that. Hans E. Laube introduced his Smellovision (later rebranded Smell-O-Vision) at the 1939 New York World's Fair. His invention used a system of pipes attached to a circular mechanism carrying vials of odorous liquid.
So I had to look up the other scents, because I thought this might be fun for a cozy game like Animal Crossing if they had nice, relaxing scents. They are releasing blood soon. Why?? Who would want that?
I work at GameStop and when my coworker unboxed this from a shipment, we were losing our minds trying to think of how it worked. And then we opened it. Figured out they were actual bottled scents and uhhhh. Christ. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone for gunfire first but the racing/burnt rubber one made me cough so hard lmao. We went from super curious and excited to never wanting anything to do with it ever again. Guaranteed the three we got are gonna rot in our store
I’ve seen ads for this thing all over social media but until now I haven’t seen any real people talk about it. Thank you for letting us know it stinks; pun intended
For this to work they need to somehow magically distill smell to its primary smells like primary colours so it on the fly mixes the base smells to make the unique smell that makes sense in the moment
The original product is the same in terms of functionality but is designed for films, where I think it might work better because films can be played back with a certain delay. This is just a relatively old product that has been re-marketed for gaming. By the way, the whole thing actually has nothing to do with AI but it sounds better XD
I'd honestly love to order gamers sups and one of their shakers. But all their shakers are hot anime girls :/. As if all of us only like waifus and not hot husbandos. Maybe if they get husbando shakers I'll order something.
@doomy_doomy2225 Yeah. But I don't want a regular shaker. I could, in theory, just order the packets and get my own shakers. But I really would like to order both.
Movie theaters are equipped with these types of smell machines now but the timing is fully scripted/programmed to match the scenes. Why don't they just take out the AI system and actually program the thing to only activate during cut-scenes? I realize it's a lot of effort to program it per game, but they could just focus on big mainstream game releases. Not to mention if it's only programmed to activate during the most important scenes of a game: it's not WASTING scent every 30 seconds based on sound effects!
I feel like this would be MUCH more effective if they had an HDMI passthrough that allowed the AI to produce scents based on visuals. Trying to do it via sound is never going to work accurately unless games start adding narrations like "The player has entered a forest."
Personal story. I had recently watched LTT’s video on a similar scent cartridge gaming device and I was playing Age of Calamity. One of the neighbors was doing a bonfire or something and as I blew something up in the game (bokoblin base or something probably), I got a big whiff of the bonfire smell. It was surprisingly (and accidentally) immersive. It took me a while to remember that the smells came from outside and were unrelated. It made me kinda wish that smell-o-vision in games was a real thing.
I think with the progress in ai understanding enviornments and describing them for blind people maybe it can be used for games and using the descriptions to create a scent.
This is a really cool concept but obviously it's not going to work properly without being programmed for in each game. The "AI" that controls this thing (whatever that actually does) can probably get the timing right sometimes with a car on screen or the sound of rain or whatever. But if it sprays out the smell of burnt rubber just once during a Zelda playthrough that is instant immersion breaking and I will not be able to supsend my disbelief with that machine ever again.
Yoo when wolf among us first came out I used to burn incense to get that smoke smell since Bigby is always pulling out a cigarette. In the moment, I remember it being so cool. In hindsight, I was a kid that didn’t smoke trying to emulate the smell of smoking in my house😂
A weird idea, you could empty smells you dont like or replace them with ones that make more sense to you. For lightning instead of that burning smell you could just do nothing or additional storm smell. Not as intended but can work around to avoid stuff you dont want to subject yourself too!
My dog farted while i was in a swamp and i actually complained to my team i wanted to leave because the swamp stank. After a moment i realized it wasnt real and my dog had immersed me in gas.
I'm suprised they wouldn't use HDMI to have an AI view the game and detect the location type or actions, that would likely be so much more accurate than sound. Not to mention it would make more sense for the scents to be more subtle to add to the gaming experience rather than distract from it. As someone who's more sensitive to scents, I'd likely be sneezing the whole time!
It seems like the sort of thing that would be REALLY cool... if they just had better smells. >.< Like, imagine if it was like forest, ocean, desert, and switched between regions in Zelda. It would be harder to program, but at least then it would smell GOOD. Even if the wrong smells went off, it would smell good, lol.
The only way I can see this kind of tech working is if the media attached to it is made with smell in mind. Like instead of AI guessing its triggered by a tag attached to a sound file like a dev tags the sound of rain for storm
I really can’t help but think about “napalm” scent is a reference to a joke from Apocalypse Now and later, Small Soldiers where the general says “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”
There are two ways this device could work. One would be a very large and expensive bank of base compounds that could be mixed to order into scents and dripped onto heated plates at different rates and in different proportions. If you study perfumery, you'll learn that certain chemicals do a LOT of heavy lifting. For example, d-limonene, probably the most common terpene, is "orange oil", but also in celery, chicken, raspberries and tea. The other way would be more limited and premixed scents, in disposable packs specific to supported titles, designed to last a few playthroughs of the game only. It would have small sealed cells of the scent which are pierced by a heated needle at the point in the game where the trigger is present, then heat sealed to cut off the scent when appropriate. Obviously peripheral would require collaboration the game's designers and would be best used sparingly, for set pieces, cutscenes, boss fights, and when entering new areas. Smaller regular doses could be used for remaining in the area. This Same peripheral could have scent "trips" to match audiobooks, movies, TV and tabletop games.
I bet if you use it when playing the Mario rpg remake it could let out the storm scent when Mallow cries. Not sure about scents related to Geno, though.
Could you talk about wordless? It is a Metroidvania/open world that it was made entirely by shapes. But when you start the fighting it becomes a turn based /action game with sword and spell
I have always wanted a feature on smartphones where you can send people smells (same way you send a text or voice message). They can choose to open it or not but when they do, a slight most comes out of the phone. You just need to replace the little tanks inside the phone when you run out.
A product made, that no ome asked for. I get why they'd add gunfire scent to make the immersiom more "realistic" but in reality, it smells horrible. No one wants to smell it. I'm sure there are soldiers who'd hate this. I'm all for making video games immersive, but there's a limit to it we want to just experience. Also to the people commented how this would be great with food, that'd be amazing! They already do that at Disney
For one, it needs better scents, for two, it needs direct link in order to actually make sense of when to fire what, it's tryin but it really needs some work

New York City does stink but oh man I love it. I went on a cruise to Bermuda for a week and when I got back, I actually missed the horrible smells of NYC.
If they want to make a perfect and match what's on the screen, they should make a camera scanner which you can just put it under/top of the monitor/tv to scan what's happening on the game and makes its scent. That AI depending on sound is a waste on the product
I think if they focus on scents that actually smell really good and is more intuitive on how and when to release the smells, it could be an interesting novelty product for sure.
I’d recommend some more souls games like Elden ring, where the emphasis of the environment is really taken into effect, and also turn off the music in each game so the music doesn’t cause confusion
I saw this at PAX and they kept trying to sell me on how great this would be. But like why must all the scents be violence themed? Why can't they have cooking mama scents?

I think this would work better with Minecraft. When TNT or a creeper explodes you get the explosion smell. When you're deep in the forest you get that. Then of course when it comes a down pour you get the storm. Also if you got the ocean and you were in the middle of the water or under water that would be best. I have a feeling it wouldn't work that well tho.
I'd recommend watching Linus Tech Tips and Austin Evans video on this. If I remember correctly it wasn't that bad for them Might just be how the soundbar or TV you are using or how those were configured that kept making the thunder and gun ones keep going off. I wouldn't be surprised if room acoustics also played a role. Of course this is bound to not work properly as advertised but I know it can work from seeing their videos.
I don’t know what kind of weapons the people in that article are firing but that’s not what I smell with gunfire at all lol. I live in an area where “lead therapy” at a nice little backyard range is normal every now and again. Rotten eggs is NOT the first thought when I smell spent gunpowder lmao. I actually kinda like it
The problem with gamersupps is their cups are limited time only, so if you wanted the exact designs shown in this video you would probably be out of luck, plus their international shipping prices are way to much and they don't have small sample sizes for people that just want to try their product. And I they taste anything like their competitors well id rather just stick to sodas if im being honest.
That is just bad. Those drinks look good. I stopped drinking soda a little while ago and I have been looking for a replacement. After a month of not drinking soda, the weight sheds and the wallet gains.
