The legend speaks the truth once again. I have been running my channel for several years now, and so many of the points you raised I have had to face over time too. My biggest piece of advice to new TH-camrs is this is a marathon, not a sprint. For most of us, you won't get instant results. It takes time, practice, patience, and a bit of luck. Some of my best videos with over 100k views had a very slow start. Don't give up, don't lose focus of your goals and dreams, and work hard to get there..........oh, and listen to Nolan 😀
Thank you. I was going to leave after number 1 but decided to stay till the end. It was a good decision and I needed to hear this: "Don't give up when things get hard." 🏝
Good content and great strategy. As a small content creator on TH-cam, I know how hard it is to gain traction and attention from the beginning. Like many of you guys, I was tired of creating quality content almost every day and getting only a few hundred views on my best days. After that, I tried using some tools to ramp up my social presence, and honestly I don't regret it. Consistency, hard work (and a little bit of Famester) always pays off somehow.
For those small content creators like me who think they aren't getting anywhere despite the efforts and hard work, never give up and keep moving forward!
I knew you got this from Ali Abdaal I think it's a great way to go about telling people why they will fail and maybe they'll stop doing it. I just need to hear the same thing over and over again before it sinks in.
We struggle with title and thumb nail first for sure. Our content is based on what we are doing by season and we typically film the “event” and then do the title and thumbnail in the moment not before. Will work on this! Appreciate you!
Thanks Nolan, I was looking at my analytics and my current edit while watching this, and found so many great tips and perspectives, I really appreciate it!!!
i have over 140,000 subscribers & TH-cam was my full time job since 2010, and NOW im about to become homeless, all my time, effort, blood , sweat and tears down the drain all for nothing, all due to youtube changing up the website way to many times, youtube used to send out numerous notifications a day now they only send out 3 a day, plus the algorithm is messed up as well, half my subs dont even get my videos anymore, its sad that this was my full time job now ill be homeless living in a tent in a couple of weeks! Unreal! as much as i love my subs and fans, it goes to show you that it doesn't matter how many subs you have in 2024!
A LOT of truth here. TH-cam is hard! I've created 2 successful real estate businesses and have years of business experience. I have found that creating a TH-cam channel from scratch is probably more challenging than my real estate businesses! I created a personal finance channel a few months ago and have just recently started seeing some gains in subscribers. My hats off to anyone who creates a TH-cam channel!
Here's an interesting question: How does the algorithm decide how many impressions to give a video? What I mean is, does the algorithm judge your video and then give impressions based on how good IT thinks the video is? I think it does but I don't think we will get a straight answer from anyone about that. This is what GPT says: Yes, the TH-cam algorithm does analyze a video even before it has any views and uses that analysis to determine how many initial impressions to give the video. Here’s how it works: 1. Video Content Analysis: Automatic Transcription: TH-cam generates automatic captions for videos, allowing it to analyze the spoken content. This helps in understanding the context, topics, and potential relevance to certain audiences. Visual Analysis: TH-cam uses image recognition technology to analyze the visual content of the video. This includes detecting objects, scenes, and even text within the video. Audio Analysis: Besides transcribing speech, TH-cam analyzes background music, sound effects, and other audio cues that could indicate the video’s genre, tone, and mood. 2. Metadata: Title, Description, Tags: Even before any views, the algorithm uses the video’s metadata to determine what the video is about. This information helps TH-cam decide which users might be interested in seeing the video. Thumbnail: The thumbnail is also analyzed for visual content, which can influence how the video is categorized and who it is shown to. 3. Channel History: Channel Authority: If the video is uploaded by a channel with a strong history of high-performing content, the algorithm might give it more initial impressions, even before any engagement data is available. Upload Consistency: Regularly uploading videos that perform well can lead to more initial impressions for new videos. 4. Comparison with Similar Content: Similar Videos: The algorithm compares the new video to existing videos with similar content. If similar videos have performed well, the new video might be given more initial impressions to test its performance. Historical Data: TH-cam considers how videos with similar topics, styles, or formats have performed in the past when determining how many impressions to allocate initially. 5. Content Compliance: Community Guidelines: The algorithm checks for potential guideline violations. If the video seems to push boundaries, it may receive fewer initial impressions. Advertiser-Friendliness: Content that is more likely to be considered advertiser-friendly might receive more initial impressions. 6. Testing Phase: Initial Impressions: TH-cam often gives a small number of initial impressions to test how a video performs. This testing phase helps the algorithm gauge viewer interest and engagement before deciding whether to give the video more impressions. Refinement: Based on early data from these initial impressions (e.g., click-through rate, watch time, engagement), the algorithm adjusts how many further impressions to give the video. So, even with 0 views, the TH-cam algorithm analyzes the video’s content, metadata, and channel history to determine its potential interest to viewers. This analysis helps decide how many initial impressions the video will receive, setting the stage for further exposure based on actual viewer interactions.
Good question. The algorithm does things randomly. I had a video with good CTR and good average view duration. The video got a lot of engagement as well But after it reached around 400 views, the views just stopped abruptly because it stopped getting impressions. No idea why. I didn't change anything or mess with any settings.
Thank you Nolan a bunch of great information and techniques. Right now I'm making a bunch of Shorts in between my long form to grow my channel and to be honest I make Shorts because there is a need for my my Shorts viewer.
Anyone who drops off a video in 30 seconds wasn't really interesting in the topic. Sure that first 30 seconds needs to be well thought out etc. but losing a third of the audience that quickly probably had nothing to do with how the video was presented...they were just suggested a video they thought they wanted to watch and they didn't. It also could be a result of perhaps the thumbnail and title appealed, but those maybe were misleading as to the actual content
Facts 💯. Most viewers would be considered problematic when being measured by the algo. We all do it, this is why I try to only click on videos that I know I want to see. Also I don’t click on videos with over the top thumbnails, because most of the times those are the videos that are fishing for views with no real value in my experience for the things I watch. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
What I feel difficult about starting a channel is when you talk about addressable market. I start to get discouraged from even starting because I don't think I would be able to make stuff people would be interested in. And when I think about what people would want to watch, I don't want to make that. lol
I had the exact same feeling, i soon realised that you cannot 'guess' what people will want to watch. Just make what you want and you could be very suprised how many people want to see it.
1:34 on a brand new channel, but what if youtube has already pigeon holed your older channel & doesn't share it with the right people? Can you overcome this or is it better to start over?
As a new TH-camr with very limited data, I would love to see a full deep-dive into Analytics! Not only just which ones to really focus on but also what some of them really mean and then how you can improve from that knowledge.
Hey Nolan, thank you for making this video. I enjoyed it and I'll try to take all the 13 tips into consideration. My channel is up and running and writing my first script for my first video. I am scared of what people think about my accent because English is not my main language and being in front of a camera is not really my thing but I'm giving this a shot. Wish me good luck!
@ivenstorintellecIQ being scared is natural and part of the process. Your English is likely better than you think it is, as we're always our own worst critics. I'm in the same boat as you (except I'm a native English speaker), where I'm just getting my first videos posted. I'm also scared what other will think but I know I'll grow thicker skin as I go and I know I'll be able to accept imperfection as I go as well. So it's important to get those initial videos posted to get beyond those first steps. You got this!
I have an easier time coming up with my titles first but being a channel that does a lot of product reviews I find it harder to do the thumbnails before the video. Thanks for sharing this information Nolan! Think isn’t the same without you!
Right now we’re in the “just start” phase, doing MR along the way and implementing changes we’ve learned on each video. Seeing what works and what doesn’t. But I always struggle with the “make your thumbnail first. We are going to locations on our shooting days and really can’t get anything for the thumbnail till that day.
loved #8 - It is so tough to have the time it takes to make a well scripted/filmed/edited video in the middle of a normal week. Loved the 2 hour YT work week 👍
All good stuff. Thanks. I like #10 and I'm to intentionally doing exactly that. I'm intentionally mashing fitness and technology together, along with whatever else I happen to get into (I'll start doing motorcycle stuff again in a bit). I'm well aware that I could do 1 or the other and probably go faster. However, I see this as a marathon and building the channel I want is more important to me than growing in a niche that I'll eventually get bored with. I also notice that other (already) successful creators eventually end up where I'm already going. Peter McKinnon is supposed to be all about photography. He sure does spend a lot of time doing just about anything but photography on his channel.
On my channel, I don't worry about video title, content idea, and thumbnails. My problem is I don't have enough time editing to juggle between my main job and this side hustle. At the end of the day, I realized this is a good problem😀
The path to success is filled with learning experiences. Embrace the ups and downs, and use every challenge as an opportunity to grow. Your perseverance will pay off.
I'm learning that you really have to research to come up with good video ideas. The next videos I'm making are based on me identifying the channels in my niche that are doing well. I made note of the people or topics that were the highest performing on those channels. That's how I'm able to know what video to make next. This is the type of research that will benefit you before you even start working on the next video you wanna make.
For those small content creators like me who think they're not getting anywhere despite the efforts and hard work, never give up! and keep moving forward! Here's my cheers to you, thanks!
I started seriously about 2 weeks ago and I’m posting 1 long form video and a short everyday, sometimes I do 2 of each, I gained 400 subs so far so it’s doing ok right now. Learning everything on the fly has been a challange.. I think the volume of posting works for my channel because it is kind of like a review page. My watch hours are at 2900 so I’m getting closer to that 4k! Fingers crossed all this work keeps it growing.
Im trying to be the “adventure family guy” we hunt, fish, camp, ATV, hike. Ik it’s a lot of different things but I want our kids to be able to look at our adventures long after I’m gone. I’m also hoping to teach others and show them our adventures.
Hey Nolan, thank you for the video I really needed as I’ve started my podcast and I am struggling with getting views and subscribers. I will apply applicable steps you mentioned in the video to my creating routine! Blessings
Hi Nolan, mine is a economic and geopolitical knowledge sharing education channel. But, why my videos are being suggested by irrelevent videos resulting to lower CTR and watchtime and slowing down the growth of the channel??
My "niche" is my audience and not a "topic" per se. What do you feel about that concept? For example, let's say my niche is single parents, and not the topic of "Parenting"? Would that work? I ask because the target audience of single parents may do more than just "Parenting", they may like homeschooling videos, dating advice for single parents, cooking videos, shopping on a budget, etc. where "parenting" as a topic is nothing but videos on that one subject and is very broad because it could include anyone who is a parent, single or not.
I know you’re giving advice for TH-camrs striving to grow their business or become content creators (and possibly get monetized) but lowkey, it’s also great advice for an introvert just trying to come out of their shell and push/challenge themselves to get passed their fears. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for sharing actual screenshots of successful videos so that we get to see the pattern. I didn't know videos could blow up after several weeks. I thought the chance was lost if it didn't go viral within a few days, a week maximum. I also paid attention to the average watch time in you examples which brings hope to my videos. The retention for my videos is lower (as I have longer videos) but I realized my average watch time isn't as bad as I thought. So this was very helpful 🙂
I wanted my niche to be just being a dad. Which entails my trucking company and family life. I was going to niche down on the trucking company, but a lot of people hesitate because of time away from family. So I thought showing both to show I've found a balance. This could be hurting my view count
My TH-cam short stopped getting views after 24 hours. But when I upload a short it gets 100-400 views in 24 hours, but after 24 hours it stops. Can you explain why? Thanks
I do the titles, thumbnails, descriptions, tags, etc. An average of my viewers at 30% is between 45 to 68%, I had livestreams where people stayed for the whole thing while watching, I put my own spin on things doing it differently than others, I grow only 30 subs every month, I went from thousands of views to 200 to 78 (the 78 who watch my livestreams) I finally stopped caring and just let my podcast feed my channel. It doesn't matter anymore. I'm done here.
This is what they don’t want to understand. At this point all of these videos are gaslighting the smaller creators. And YT knows it. I hate being so negative about parts of this topic. But I hate that these guys are getting views on topics that they know people are struggling with but they all keep saying the same thing. YT will pick who they want to succeed end of story.
If you don’t mind me asking. What are your avg impressions on a video? Because if they are not recommending your videos to anyone how will anyone even get a chance to look at your content….Do you tend to see your views and impressions go up during the month of October? Because that’s when they should for sure boost your content.
@@LifeOfViette 28K impressions, 1.5 click through rate. Suggested, browse and search are all under 20%. I think it is because a woman who had the same amount of subs as I did exploded to a million subs but I was doing fine until she changed her name to something similar to mine. Maybe. I spent 7 years branding that name. I was featured on other channels, wrote a book, been on talk shows and interviews but now when they search "spooky boo" they no longer get me, they get her. Years of work wasted.
I have a question? Should you be a generalist in your skills but be a specialist in what you are doing? I have been playing with this idea and have put put some content on this. Wanted to get your thoughts. I am contemplating in buying your course.

applied on June 29th. Never received a response about whether I was accepted to the content academy. Are there still slots available?
Why are my shorts getting 10x more views than my regular videos?
You just made me understand #12, I never realised the difference between the 2. x
Glad it was helpful!
👏👏👏 Thank you
You’re welcome 😊
For those small content creators like me who think they're not getting anywhere despite the efforts and hard work, never give up! and keep moving forward! Here's my cheers to you, thanks!
Thank you so much Nolan ❤
No problem 😊
In point 5 , doesnt work means, what to do, since if you are guy in coffee region, any advice!
Number 10 is the one I refuse to do and I am Ok to accept the consequences and not growing faster...
Very valuable! Thanks for sharing all this advice.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is actually a good insight. Thank you
You're welcome!
@210major why would I lie? I’m currently at 3,859 watch hours but there is a four day lag and I’m only at 494 subs.
We will get there
Im trying to be the “adventure family guy” we hunt, fish, camp, ATV, hike. Ik it’s a lot of different things but I want our kids to be able to look at our adventures long after I’m gone. I’m also hoping to teach others and show them our adventures.
my mistakes is I keep making the same mistakes and keep changing my niche or the way I make videos now my channel is slowly dying
Hey Nolan, thank you for the video I really needed as I’ve started my podcast and I am struggling with getting views and subscribers. I will apply applicable steps you mentioned in the video to my creating routine! Blessings
Glad it was helpful!
Great info! Thanks! I am going to use these strategies to grow my channel
I'm glad you found the information helpful; best of luck with growing your channel!
Good information 😮
Glad you think so!
Let's gooo, let's grow together!
You're just spreading yourself thin.
I know you’re giving advice for TH-camrs striving to grow their business or become content creators (and possibly get monetized) but lowkey, it’s also great advice for an introvert just trying to come out of their shell and push/challenge themselves to get passed their fears. Thanks for the tips!
I'm glad you find the advice helpful. It’s all about growth, whether it’s for business or personal development, so keep pushing yourself!
Glad it was helpful!
To small youtuber like me, don't give up guys! Be patient, we monetized sooner❤🎉
I wanted my niche to be just being a dad. Which entails my trucking company and family life. I was going to niche down on the trucking company, but a lot of people hesitate because of time away from family. So I thought showing both to show I've found a balance. This could be hurting my view count
Thank you. I'm learning a lot from you.
Glad to help!
Can you share the link to Jake Thomas' ebook you mentioned at 10:22? Thanks!
Updated description!
Thank you, really valuable information x
Glad it was helpful!
Sir what happened my TH-cam channel slow down please update my TH-cam channel first and not coming good views
To a person reading this you are going to succeed don't give up
Thanks so much for sharing this educative video!
You are so welcome!
What is the name of the new camera you got?
My TH-cam short stopped getting views after 24 hours. But when I upload a short it gets 100-400 views in 24 hours, but after 24 hours it stops. Can you explain why? Thanks
The same here
I do the titles, thumbnails, descriptions, tags, etc.
I feel u... this youtube thing is a game. U have plenty of videos and only getting those amount of views. Ima watch yours now tho
@@splatterdaynightmares girl are you serious??!!!! That’s not right! OMG I’m so sorry that happened to you.
Great Tips. Thank You
Glad it was helpful!
Where did you get those RGB lights?
I create mostly short videos. YT chooses the thumbnail. We should be able to create a thumbnail for the shorts too.
I have a question? Should you be a generalist in your skills but be a specialist in what you are doing? I have been playing with this idea and have put put some content on this. Wanted to get your thoughts. I am contemplating in buying your course.
Thank you so much for videos like this. It really keeps us going
It's my pleasure!
