  • Amazing autumn colors in Iceland. Þingvellir was almost completely deserted during the pandemic of 2020. This 1 hour walking tour leads you through most of the main attractions in Þingvellir.
    Information about the tour:
    00:25 - Öxará river that runs from Öxarárfoss waterfall.
    01:46 - Þingvallabær. A manor house where the government of Iceland sometimes hosts visiting heads of state.
    02:57 - Beautiful autumn colors.
    05:50 - Þingvellir church.
    06:33 - Jónas Hallgrímsson and Einar Benediktsson, poets, are buried within this circle.
    09:42 - Flosagjá fissure.
    10:52 - Peningagjá fissure (money fissure). It is customary to throw a coin into the water for good luck or to make a wish.
    11:26 - Nikúlásargjá fissure.
    13:16 - It may not look like it but the bridge was surprisingly slippery with ice.
    13:23 - Jakobshólmi.
    14:21 - Öxarárhólmi.
    15:11 - The flag pole marks the location of Lögberg (Law Rock). This is believed by some to be the location where the Althing parliament gathered centuries ago.
    17:19 - Almannagja canyon. This canyon marks the boundary of the Mid-Atlantic rift, which is the space between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates.
    26:30 - Looking over Þingvallavatn lake. The largest natural lake in Iceland.
    34:17 - Snorrabúð (Snorri's booth). Named after Saga-age chieftain Snorri Þorgrímsson. Overgrown traces of buildings are visible on the parliamentary site at Þingvellir. These are remnants of shelters or booths in which people stayed during the two week session of the Alþingi (general assemblance) each summer.
    35:31 - In recent decades the Icelanders have celebrated their most important national events at Þingvellir.
    37:03 - Drekkingarhylur (drowning pool). Executions by drowing took place here.
    39:34 - Fangabrekka (Wrestling slope).
    46:51 - Öxarárfoss waterfall. It is said some pioneers once dropped an axe into the frozen river, thus naming it “Axe river”. Öxarárfoss basically means “Axe river falls”.
    52:19 - Describing the multitude of places where people were executed at Þingvellir. Places such as Drowning Pool, Execution Block Spit, Scourge Islet, Fire Gorge and Gallows Rock.
    55:56 - Langistígur. The Walk of Death.

    With your amazing and addictive videos, you make us feel like we were really there. No catchy sentences, no poignant music. Just the steps and the silence, as it should be. Thumbs up!

    Now it’s autumn again, we enjoy watching this video with our pumpkin spice coffee! Very cosy! We love revisiting your beautifully made films and immerse ourselves in them by watching them all on our widescreen TV. We feel as if we are there doing the walk ourselves. They are uplifting, interesting and so peaceful. Thank you. Wishing you a lovely autumn. Best wishes from Wendy and Geoff Brighton UK

    Our last visit there was four years ago. How different the park looks in the fall and without the crowds. I do not recall such an extensive system of boardwalks, must be new.

    • @IcelandHotSpots

      It's quite a different place without people and summer colors, as you say. Yes I believe the paths have been improved in recent years.

    I am not quite finished watching this walk, but I had to stop it and say just how beautiful the Axe River Falls are. I love the remoteness of this place, it almost feels familiar to me, but of course, it is not. I appreciate the details you provide so much. It would be helpful to have an idea of what time of day your walks are. I try to figure this out but a sunrise could actually be a sunset. Then, you are so far north, I could be way wrong and it is high noon. :-) I feel most walks are mornings because there are so few people around - most of the time, but not always.

    • @IcelandHotSpots

      It felt very surreal because it's usually quite crowded. Just sheep minding their own business, everything quiet and the colors of fall a beautiful mix. I was there early, most often I flm in the mornings. Þingvellir is just a fantastic place.

    The waterfall at 47 minutes is how I arrived at Þingvellir. Hiked overland from the top following the river and then climbed down the cliff. After that we went to Þórisjökull northward and climbed on the glacier, which back then extended all the way down to nearly the bottom of the cliff but now is retreated almost to the top of the cliff.

    • @IcelandHotSpots
      @IcelandHotSpots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to try coming over that way, following the river. Yeah it's retreating. Someday very few will have experienced climbing glaciers like you did.

    Iceland has really nice natural landscapes. It looks like Ireland and Norway at the same time. I could be wrong though.

    • @IcelandHotSpots
      @IcelandHotSpots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has similarities to both, although I would lean more towards Ireland.

    Landscapes and views of Icelandic autumn nature are very similar to those of Siberia.

    • @IcelandHotSpots
      @IcelandHotSpots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can imagine with the tundra. I'd like to see some parts of Siberia some day.

    • @thatguywiththemitsu9696
      @thatguywiththemitsu9696 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IcelandHotSpots Not tundra. The tundra is an empty field with low grass and snow. No trees and sparse low bushes.
      The Siberian forest is taiga.
      Taiga is a frequent and tall tree, mainly coniferous and medium-sized shrubs. It grows both on plains and on hills and mountains.
      Taiga is much more beautiful and "richer" (wild berries, mushrooms and nuts) than tundra. Only moss grows in the tundra.
