  • This video was shot in August 2012 as part of a Safari to the Irkeepusi Maasai Village on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in the Arusha region of Tanzania. The wife of the chief of the tribe invites my wife to join the dance, and she is joined by other members of the safari group. You can see the men of the tribe performing the Adumu or jumping dance on the left side of the video. The folks in the tribe also asked us into their bomas to experience life as a Maasai. The chief's son Asoue, (seen in the foreground of the thumbnail), hosted us in his boma where we took turns taking pictures of each other with my camera and chatting about each other's lifestyle and language. Asoue was taking classes at the local university to help his tribe communicate more effectively with visitors to their village, and would stop me if I uttered a word in he didn't understand. He would then repeat it, confirm it's meaning, and scratch it out on the dirt floor of the boma in English. This cultural exchange is a source of income for these folks. This was a very humbling and sobering experience for me to see firsthand the juxtaposition between their existence and our own. They were gracious, happy, curious people who choose to live as their ancestors in a modern day world.
