The whole trip was a blast. Rio is a dangerous place and we saw violence around every turn. From Cops beating up a kid with a soccer ball to a street vendor taking a switch to some dude, to one guy using Capoeira to beat the shit out another guy right in front of the ATM we were using that was in a decent part of town. We stayed between Ipanema and Copacabana beaches in a district called Arpoador, which means "harpooner". Men would stand on the reef jutting out into the water and harpoon whales right there! We intentionally went shopping in a sketchy district called Centro. I asked the concierge of our hotel which metro to take to get there. He looked at me, his eyes became as wide as saucers and said, "You're going to Centro?" "You must be very, very careful!!! Once we got there, it was as grass roots as you can get. There was a huge covered maze of shops with no lighting inside, so it was very dark and spooky with people looking at you like "What the f*** are you gringos doing here?" I was negotiating a price for a bootleg Brasil National Team jersey with a young girl who had a shop on the perimeter of the maze, when a man came running down the street shouting, grabbed his jewelry stand knocking items off it as he ran down the street. The girl I was dealing with grabbed a pole with a hook on it and frantically started taking down her bootleg merch. I'm telling her, "Wait a minute, I want to buy that one!" The fuss was over a Cop that was strolling up the street, and at that point it was all monkey business as usual. Hilarious! We saw a guy on the metro that must have been 6'4", with his 4" afro cut into "islands" on his scalp, sashaying like no tomorrow, with a stuffed Minnie Mouse purse around his neck. It's a meat lover's dream come true in Brasil and Argentina. They have restaurants called Churasscarias that are "all-you-can-stand". Some give you a card that is green on one side and red on the other. As long as you display the green side, they keep bringing you some of tastiest grilled meat you've ever had.

A bit of a circus act, but that sucker can paint better than a lot of humans I know.
