Your videos are very helpful and detailed. I want to put a 16 x20 ft roof on my deck. Can I use flush beam instead of drop beam? I mean the roof rafters are 16 ft and could we flush them with ledger board and structural beam without any support or blocking between them?
If you are stripping a tiles roof from top to bottom and sheeting from the top, how do you do you’re last cut at the bottom so you’re tile doesn’t dip down
Yeah sorry didn't show that in this video but miter cuts on rafters to the roof deck then sheathing up to the shingle then roll roofing & metal flashing up under the shingle and over the top of the rolled Roofing if that helps you
I appreciate all of your videos and you have been very responsive to people's question! Very professional! I see that you will run the OSB all the way up to the existing roof. What is the process for dealing with the transition? I understand you are going to use Roll roofing and metal flashing over the transition area, but I was hoping you could elaborate on how the material is installed. For example is the metal first or the roll roofing?
I usually run two parts. Felt up to and under the shingle of the of the roof that's being tied into. Then I put minimum 12in wide strip of flashing horizontally centering 6 in across the deck scene where it ends at the roof tie in. This prevents sinking or settling of the new roof to be installed. Then install your roof membrane all the way up slightly under the tie in existing roof. Then I run additional flashing 24 in horizontally. Roughly 16 in up under the shingle of an existing house at approximately 8 in overlapping the new membrane roof to the shed style roof no fasteners exposed
Well you can use whatever you want but you have to remember any kind of plywood is multiple laminate sheets glued together and your subject to exterior weather conditions like moisture. So usually when you use the OSB the skin or laminate side which is coated faces the bottom. The dry side or unlaminated side faces up and then the roof gets installed directly to that. So the practical usefulness of OSB is that there's no way for it to delaminate as the roof coats the top and the bottom which is exposed to any type of atmosphere or moisture has a protective skin coating on it. But you can still use plywood if you think at this point it's a better product
I have 4 Amish Men that are going to put a new roof on my old garage including new trusses. It's approximately 600 square feet and want to know what thickness OSB is best for sheathing and are the little spacers recommended. This job starts in Mid July
Spacer clips are a must have between each joist and all edges. If joist spacing is 16" on center you can use 7 16th isb or 3/4. If jkist are spaced 24" o.c. you can only use 3/4". Good luck
Hi Vince do you have video about same roofing framing installation attached in the existing roofing like this one with 2x6 ? I need to see how you started doing the cutting framing and lineal in the roofing thank you
Is there it's left and right step staggered across the middle of the platform. You don't see that in this video. The video is regarding OSB only, not framming
Field miter each rafter to the pitch of the existing roof establishing the pitch on your shed style roof. Flat receiver board must be placed attached to the existing Rafters of the house. Then each new rafter for the overhang roof is that attach to that using Taylor's and Simpson strong tie Hardware. If you're unfamiliar with this you will definitely need the expertise of a carpenter
My house in the back is 40ft by 20ft roof. The roof on each side is 12 by 40. It has a 1/2 thick plywood. I found out for this side roof, I need 3/4 plywood. Do I need to remove all of the 1/2 inch plywood tha is on the roof? Or can I lay down an extra sheet on top of the exist plywood?
Does anyone know if when sheathing a gambrel roof do you cut the ends at angles so they meet up nicely or do you leave a big triangle shaped gap and just shingle over?
Never found the need to angle edge. Not furniture. Ply or osb. Small fap is acceptable as long as one surface does not project past the other creating a shelf like lip. Set so each panl above and below touches one another at the underside along with being completely flush to the rafters
Not sure about Georgia how ever OSB manufacturers make it as 7/16 of an inch and 3/4 of an inch. shit i 1/8" gaped the ends also on my new roof lol and used clips on all sides but sence the osb bords said this side down on the slick side I got that right and the 4' stagger. dam I could cave saved on clips O well it's all under architectural shingles now I guess I'm good. I screwed the he'll out of it all. 2" screws . everything I build is definitely a 16" center because osb needs it in my opinion.

Great video. Every bit of information is helpful to us DIY'ERS. ❤

Super awesome video! Kept it short and sweet! Yet extremely helpful and informative. And,
You got straight to the point!

Thank you for the info!
Thank you, It resolved the question I been wondering with osb expanding in weather conditions. Spacing and which ways to space the 1/8 gap.
Two or three 8 penny nails evenly spaced out are great spacers in a pinch.

any idea what the "mechanical brackets" are called that you would use here to secure the mitre cut end of the rafter to the roof? Thanks!
Simpson strong tie...rafter tie
dont you have to space all 4 edges ? verticle and horizontal

Typically we only need three quarter inch plywood at the rafter spacing is 24 inch apart?
And if you did change the sheathing thickness you always remove what's there never go over
Rafters are 24 inch apart
So I can’t use a 1/2 inch sheet on top of the existing plywood?
I can use metal clips on the 1/2 plywood for sturdiness
Those rafters are a little oversized for 16 oc beyond code
dry side? wet side?

How far apart do does nails or screws go on each rafters, including the ends?
6-8 per 4' each rafter

Yes. Dont forget spacer clips

Is 7/16 osb recommended for this roof?
Tx
7/16" is code approved only when rafters are not more than 16" oc spacing. Anything wider you must use 3/4"
Sounds good

1/2" or 3/4"?
Hi. 7/16 for 16" on center rafters.
3/4" for rafters set 24" oc
