I believe this is the role Ben Affleck was *born* to play. The Aspirational Ideal. We've heard the other brokers bicker ("You got a cannoli you can stick in yer mouth?" - "No, you got a menorah you can shove up yer ass?"), but he carries himself as a professional, one who worked his way up from their level. He {ruthlessly} creates an environment where pleasing him outweighs their personal comforts, or standards, or vestiges of morality
He is a Force Of Nature

    It’s true. It’s so true.
I’m a dispatcher for a big city FD and in my office we are required to wear uniforms but most of my colleagues are sloppy. Shirts untucked. Not shaven. Crocs shoes. Shirts opened. Just look like shit.
I used to be that way my attitude was “I’m at work people don’t see me who cares”.
Then I watched this scene a few times.
Slowly I bought new work shoes and I keep them polished like it’s a mirror. They sparkle.
My uniforms are pressed and starched. They go to the cleaners every other week.
I wear a tricked out G Shock and bracelets. A nice chain around my neck.
I tan twice a week. I became meticulous with my grooming including eyebrows.
Shirt is tucked in. I put a dab of cologne on every day.
What I noticed over time? I get more overtime opportunities my way, I’m more motivated to work and I feel like I’m mentally more sharp and of clear mind. I’m also treated differently now. Doors opened for me. Something in my mind switched all from making a decision to look the part. Your outside appearance is a direct reflection on how you feel inside.
You perform better when you look better.
    Last quick example:
My nephew plays high school hockey. Decent player. I played in high school so he tells me about his games. He wants to be a better player I told him immediately…
Stop with the lame regular kid haircut. You play hockey. I told him to grow out a mullet, keep it short with two lines on the side of his head.
Showed him examples of the traditional hockey haircut.
He did. I even told his mom let him do it.
Result: he’s a better player than ever because he is emulating his heros in the NHL. He “thinks” he is a NHL’er now. It’s subconscious.
    Sounds crazy, right? It isn’t.

      "Act as if..."
I didn't believe it, til I did it, and it worked
As an office manager I told my team "they can hear over the phone whether your shirt is tucked in" and "a smile sounds different" because - though it sounds facile, impossible, even - it is absolutely true!
If you sound like a beggar they may toss you a few coins. But if you sound like a benefactor . . . Well, "sky's the limit!"
      Plus, I love: "hockey haircut"
      Now that shows dedication!

Before I opened my own company I worked commission only. I became the #1 producer in the company. The #2 guy was way behind me. I was known as the worst dressed person in an office of over 60 people. I never wore sloppy or ratty clothes. I just wasn't into style in the place I worked. Who am I trying to impress? This was an office of 90% men. In an inside sales office, what you wear has nothing to do with how you produce. Other people in the company thought it was important to look really good in the office. Their heads and priorities were up their ass. I remember a couple of guys came up to me trying to break my chops and told me that I should dress more professionally. I first pointed to the board(stats) and proceeded to say; "you have the better wardrobe but I make a lot more money than any of you. I'll take the income, you take the clothes". Two of them ended up working at my company.

And to carry on my point from October, with dressing professionally then whenever you meet someone and say who you work for, then you are representing that company. So, when walking to or from work people see me and it helps keep my business thought of professional, compared to turning up in crop trousers and a dirty old t-shirt.

This movie is a great 101 on corruption and greed.

True. But, if you apply these principles (e.g., leadership/confidence) to a noble cause, then you can actually galvanize a lot of positivity into the world. Sale skills can be developed to sell stuff that actually betters people's lives. It doesn't have to be about greed and corruption.

What does Ben Affleck say at 1:15? To me it sounds like "What are you? Last night's erection?" but I could be wrong.

I get it gettting the trainee to invest in proper atire is one thing but asking them to pay 300$ for the exam is just mean.. Its like 2 weeks pay for them and you expect them to fork out money for it.
The company make millions , hell even affleck himself can clearly afford to pay for it and they still want to squeeze out these poor folks. If they are well paid i aint complain but its like asking intern to pay for skill development course that you require to keep that person intern job.. terrible

The kicker is he'll keep the $300 if they fail the series 7 exam. He keeps the rookies poor and therefore applies more pressure on them to make sales. It's a brilliant evil move.

Well it's both a form of collateral, and motivation for them to work hard, and do whatever it takes to pass their exam once they know there's no turning back. It's also a way to show the company you're all in, and want that job like you're life depends on it, when you realize you'll be held accountable if you mess up from that point on too.
