    I have a 14.2 Mirage setup. I have used Mirage for the past 20 years and have never had the need to change. What I like about the Mirage is that you can ceiling mount the speakers away from the wall and the sound is hands down the largest soundstage that I have ever heard. Just for the fronts I have 8 Mirage's. They are arranged as floor "for ear level sound, middle, which is for sound about 5 to 7 feet above your head, and ceiling mounted, for sound 10ft way above your head. I have two center channels, one below my theater screen about 3 feet high and a ceiling mounted center channel. So just for the front speakers I run 10 speakers including two subs. There are 4 ceiling surrounds in the back. The rears sound MUCH better in a half circle up on the ceiling about 2 feet away from the side and back walls. The secret is to make sure that ALL of your speakers including your height speakers are away from your walls at least by two feet to maximize the soundstage.

      Sounds amazing, I definitely agree that the speakers needs to be a certain distance away from the wall and some sort of diffusion in place for the sound to not smack off of surfaces and smoothly bounce back with a less washed out feel. What do you have powering the speakers? I am assuming this is a dedicated home theater room... I need to get wall mounts with arms in order to have the height speakers 1 foot away from the wall though, I don't exactly like this room in my videos lately and would rather find a new house with a decent template for a dedicated room.

      I did the same with my boston acoustics Lynnfield series. 20 years old and never felt like replacing. I use 2x vr12 center speakers, front and side channels vr40, rear cr8 book shelves modified with the amd tweeters from the VR line speakers to timbre match.
      2 jbl jrx 18inch subs, driven by crown xls1502 in full bridged mono 1025w @4ohm. Those subs love the power big cones. Crossover set to 47.5hz low is not an issue in my setup.
      I have a 7.1 setup my main amp is a older pioneer elite 7x130w at 8ohm 20-20khz. Not the skewed specs you see these days tested 1 channel at 1khz. To get higher wattages on paper..😂
      Next step scoring a harman kardon citation power amp on the fronts. Got to love it people..its the hobby

    My sound system consists of 4 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains and 2 for the side channels), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 6 SVS Prime Elevation speakers (4 ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos and 2 mounted on the back wall for the rear channels) and 2 SVS SB-3000 Subwoofers. The system is powered by a Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A 11 channel AVR connected to a Panamax M5400-PM Power Conditioner.

      I really love the sound, but they are not cheap... However over other speakers they really sound different, these are just so detailed and clear over others. I am extremely glad I went with SVS years ago, since I was thinking about going with KEF or PSB and a few others.

    Sounds really nice guy!
    I have the Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 setup.
    I mounted my speakers in the ceiling .
    Height speakers are definitely worth installing. Once these guys experience the sound they will be blown away!!! Totally worth the investment.
    Even older movies that do not support Dolby Atmos or DTX Plus sound really nice with the height speakers.
    Great video👍

      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man I was so happy once these were installed, a total night and day difference and music even sounds better in the 11.2 sound modes which you wouldn't think it would. The sound field you get is amazing with the heights, yea older movies really come alive with up mixing going on. I have been looking for new movies with Atmos or DTS X and it doesn't seem like a lot are coming out, Den of Thieves is one I was looking at... Not in Atmos i don't think, but you almost don't even need it with a good setup. What kind of speakers are you using now?

    When I was a child seeing Star Wars, heard with overhead surrounds or speakers used as overhead as far, far away when star wars played in Dolby Stereo at Bournemouth Gaumont screens 1 and 2. Back in those days would have used a Dolby CP50.
    Screen 1 upstairs had only overhead surrounds x6 flush in the ceiling of the Cinerama curved screen auditorium.
    Screen 2 downstairs very large size had surrounds fitted sidewall/back wall and clusters flush-mounted spread evenly within the ceiling I think x6 or x8? Least x4 sidewall and x4 back wall. Cinema no longer exists was gutted up into halves early 1989 for shoebox cinema screens.
    I worked for year with new cinema plex that opened in the area at poole, UCI tower park 10 plex and when the chief showed me around day before I started projection training was amazed with screen 6 that is one of two largest screens 5 and 6. The smaller screens 1 to 4 and 7 to 10. While shown screen 6 with Ghostbusters II playing in Dolby Stereo SR Spectral Recording. I noticed the auditorium was fitted exclusively with OVERHEAD SURROUNDS or Eletro-Voice EV's yes it was immersive storytelling.
    So this overhead surround is old news to me. It maybe done discretely now but it still old news to me. What we really need is BELOW SURROUND as most joes home cinema have no clue what is sound? Real Life sound beats atmos dtsx auro even LIEMAX 12ch many times over.
    I own a Marantz SR6012 running up to x76 JBL professional in room length 15',4" width 11' height 7' 8" and that is tiny dinky size but doable.
    I run a five screen front matched smaller size JBL control 12SR all actively wired DSP crossover much in the way of 70mm for Dolby format 40 wide or SDDS 8ch.
    x3 JBL 8330 left sidewall
    x3 JBL 8330 right sidewall
    x2 JBL 8330 back wall
    x1 extra JBL 8330 the special at the back of the room
    x4 JBL control 1 for Matrix below surrounds underneath the x6 Irwin cinema rocker seats below surround matrix is placed at outer seats left to right front row and back row the middle row seats front/back have no issues hearing below surround that sounds defused and spread around below and depends on the steering of the extra pro-logic decoder that is wired to the system a bit complicated but once a trained listener listeners and knows how it works of what it can and can't do that's it it really is simple to set-up.
    x8 JBL control 1 for extra special
    x6 bass seat shakers
    x2 JBL 18" cinema subs diy JBL 4645 box size loaded with JBL 2240 with a JBL 4645C powered by Behringer inuke 3000
    Up to 40 amplifiers that are in the kitchen Samson SRK21 rack
    main two Samson SRK21 racks in the THX cinema with x2 professional Lucasfilm Ltd THX system system as used in maybe few rare THX cinemas today if they are still using a THX 3417 crossover monitor?
    x2 Sony SDDS D3000
    Dolby Stereo CP65 x2
    Dolby CP500 x2
    I wanted something not too pricey and yes ebay has tones of this cinema gear cheaper than fish & chips family meal.

    KEF Q50A / R50 / Klipsch RP-140SA /are design to mount on the wall or be used as atmos. They have keyholes and can be mounted flush to the wall. the Sony Core Atmos speakers are also wall mountable (for people on a budget)

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are certainly right, however I did confirm with Klipsch that those are meant to sit on top of your front tower or L and R speakers. They can be hung on the wall, but not meant for the ceiling. Although someone will probably do that at some point.

      You are right on both count and because of you i just order the SVS speaker to complement my new system .I have the Klipsch RP-280FA with the the RP-450C and the R115SW for R/L i have the SP-BS 22A from Pionner and at the back 2Polk FXi-A4 those i know that i have to change eventuelly.And my receaver is a Denon AVRX6400 H and i am thinking to put my old Yamaha RXV-861 as a pre-Amp what do you think??

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the pre amp output from the Yamaha and see what the voltage it is putting out in the specs, you are looking for anywhere from 1v to 7 or 8v. It really depends on if the Yamaha is a dedicated pre amp, or if it has amplifiers inside of it, sometimes when you add extra components to the chain, it can create pre amp feedback which is distortion or buzzing. Otherwise I would say that would work great, but the Denon should give you similar sound quality acting as a pre amp as well. Klipsch and SVS are very similar sounding in nature I believe, at least a few of the models, but with the tratrix horn tweeters, they are unmistakable. That sounds like a great system already!

    • @Steelphang9669
      @Steelphang9669 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again you are right the Yamaha is not and can not be a pre-Amp of course the Denon 6400 his great and have enough power to go alone but i wasn't sure .Anyway i will go with the Denon receaver alone first and tell you all about it cause i think to that both Klipsch and SVS are a perfect match .:)Can wait:)Again thanks for you're wisdom and keep up the good work !!

    I think it depends on sitting position in relation to how the drivers are pointing towards the listener.
    In ceiling speakers, good quality like Kef, Polk, Q Acoustics etc point directly down at listening position, and are calibrated likewise too.
    Hassle true but though but if done right worth it.

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      john jordan definitely, that was one of my possible decisions to make whether to continue the line of KEF speakers I already own which I love. But certainly depends on the listening position and if the drivers and tweeters are pointed properly. Since I was going with the SVS set up I just continued with the brand. Bought for my dedicated home theater I think I will continue with the KEF line.

    Very nice. I have these speakers arriving soon as well as my first Atmos system with the rest of the speakers coming in. Im coming off of a 2004 home theatre in a box, sony. It was 500 bucks at the time. This set up is a little over 3400. So a definate increase in price. Hopefully a big step up. How high should these atmos speakers go up on the wall? I have 8 foot ceilings and was going to use these as my front height speakers. Unfortunately the Marantz reciever Im getting only does 7 channels and 2 subs. So I have only 2 height speakers for Atmos in the front. Hoping that will be good enough. Its a small master room. My other concern was how the speaker set up would convert to 5.1 surround sources on alot of older content and games. Im assuming the height speakers wont fire during 5.1 content? Hopefully the Marantz can recognize signals and convert them. This is all completely new to me. My previous home theatre in a box is a 6.1 surround system. Its odd to me to not have a dedicated rear speaker and instead of side speakers you have 2 rear speakers that are diagonally positioned behind the listener. So Im not sure how 5.1 works without that dedicated rear and speakers directly to the sides. Hoping the system takes care of it for me, ha ha.
    Another issue I have is that I cant position the left and right rear speakers symettrically and may even need to put them higher up on the wall. So Im not sure how thats going to sound. My 65 inch OLED also is mostly blocking the two front speakers so that may be somewhat muffled as well. Hopefully the sound still fills this small room and is immersive. If I really enjoy it I will consider upgrading the reciever later for more speaker support, but as of now it will be a while before I have the furniture I need to properly set everything up.

    How does this fare against SVS Ultra Surround. Can the surround be used as height speakers? Which one will be a better fit for height speakers?

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Balakrishnan CR the ultra surround speakers could be used at height channels. The elevations are going to be a little better though because of their shape. You would have to mount the ultra surrounds and point them down, plus they radiate the sound in different ways than the elevations. The SVS ultra surrounds are amazing speakers but I would say the elevations are much easier to use for height channels. Actually using the SVS ultra bookshelf speakers would give a unique sound for height channels but very hard to mount on the ceiling.

  • @Viettzz

    Why did you have the Prime Elevation speakers pointed sideway? I thought it suppose to point toward where you seat? Like at an angle....

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they are pointing to where I sit, in the middle of the couch, and I wanted them off of the back wall to be able to distinguish between surround back channels and Surround rear height channels. In a typical Atmos or object based setup the speakers would be in the ceiling more or less directly above the listener or behind. But since this is on the side wall pointing towards the couch in the center it gives a more realistic engaging feel that's more cinematic ultimately.

  • @seanlacroix
    @seanlacroix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm thinking of getting these for a 5.2.2 system. Would these work well at the front setup as height speakers for Atmos/dts-x? I'm currently using bi-pole speakers as my surround speakers placed to the left and right of my seating position.

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      These would work great as front height or rear. Depending on the amp used to drive them, it wouldn't make a difference rear or front. Some 9 Channel AV receivers power the front height speakers only with onboard amplifiers and require external amplifiers for rear Heights.

      Does your receiver support Auro 3D? If so, how does it compare to Atmos and DTS:X?

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      S O yea it supports auro 3d, I actually really love the sound mode for a few different things, video games, movies with no height information to up mix and music played in surround sound is amazing. It's the most unique sound mode since it makes great use of the height channels, compared to DTS X though... I prefer DTS all day. Since I only have about 5 movies in DTS X, it's rare but nothing in Auro 3d native. Just the demo disc, so it's great but DTS I feel is better at lossless audio.

      They are acting as the rear height surround speakers, in a 7.1.4 configuration. Even so I should try moving them forward a bit, but since this room is so small, they seem to work best on the side wall instead of the back wall, plus the couch is too close to the back wall, center too low and surround backs way too close. Mainly I need to find a new room in my opinion.

    • @dan_hitchman007
      @dan_hitchman007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also mount them overhead with their optional ceiling bracket, which would be best. You must securely mount them, however. Otherwise, mount them on the side walls, but make sure you use the Top Front and Top Rear Dolby Atmos positions in the receiver setup... just slide them to the side walls if you can't put them overhead. That's actually better than front and rear heights as that tends to just make the front and rear lower layer of speakers sound taller rather than objects panning around you.

      These SVS elevation speakers were much different than other ones I had installed in the same spot. The first speakers I tried you could point out the speakers and where the sound is coming from, these you cannot. So now it is a true atmos experience, especially with the 4 height speakers from SVS. If you just mount any old speakers on the top of the wall or ceiling you most likely can point out where the sound is coming from, but the elevations are slanted to point towards listening area so you get the full experience. That is what is so different about these, is the focused sound other speakers produce vs these. It is as close to a true theater experience as I could get in here.

      How would you manage these speakers in a room which has an off center vaulted ceiling? If I do them on the ceiling one would be 13' high and 9' to the left of my main sitting chair which is very close to dead center of the TV and LCR speakers. The other ceiling speaker would on the opposite vaulting wall coming down to 8' high and about 5' to the right of my center seat. Same distance in front. Another thought is to mount them on the available side walls . The height would be 8' but the left wall is about 13' away from the center viewing/listening chair and the right wall would be about 5' away. Now if I use the front wall where the TV is mounted I can place them above the L&R speakers about 8 -10' high and they would be focusing dead center and down towards my center chair which is about 10' away from that wall. Thoughts?

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly would mount them on the front wall, since they are going to be 8 to 10 feet high, and focusing towards the center chair, are going to produce the best effects, remember these aren't putting out floor layout sounds, just height effects... so you want the elevations as high as you can get them but no more than about 10 feet. Any more and they can be hard to dial in, you do want them focused dead center if you can get them, some rooms need them pointed just down, not really at the listening position, but use the shape of them to your advantage, take what you can get from downward over exactly towards you, you might notice that they sound better reflecting off soft surfaces, than just right towards the main center listening position. Since the ceiling is vaulted, take the front wall.

    • @garykarczewski6678
      @garykarczewski6678 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front mounts would be most symmetrical for certain. One other question what are your thoughts of using these with other brands which are your LCR? Do you think the work well, or doesn't matter what your LCR are? Lots of manufactures will say, you should use all timber matching speakers for surrounds and height. Agree, disagree?

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Karczewski I think that is something that SVS thought of during development, but they're still definitely going to sound best match with other SVS speakers but they really do sound similar to Klipsch and Polk which have a similar nature to say elac KEF and monitor audio as well. I think that comes down to the sensitivity somewhat and how efficient they can be compared to the other speakers in the room. Paired with a cheap set of Sony speakers from 15 years ago equals horrible results but decent speakers bought within the last 5 years I can't see a problem at all... they're pretty similar.

    Great video, thank you. I've recently upgraded to Atmos and added the Atmos enabled speakers (RP-140SA). Although it was a nice addition, but I don't hear much affect as I would like or just wasn't blown away with all the hypes. I'm thinking of returning them and switching them out with these Prime Elevation speakers. Do you think it is worthwhile doing? I currently have a 5.1.2 setup, maybe making it a 5.1.4 (with the addition of the height speakers)?

      trinhk I think you’re good. Klipsch said you can use them as surrounds. Only reason I want the new version is the larger 5.25” driver and the ability to get rid of that Atmos crossover where they mess with the sound. You can switch it off in the new version. How many height speakers do you have? Also how do you like it? I’m about to buy two to mount as front heights but I want to mount two more to ceiling as top middle.

I am sure somebody has taken a driver and just installed it in the ceiling to see how it sounds. The bounce speakers just seem to be lacking power from the amp in general.

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the money get the elevations for all 4. I made the choice to slowly ease into the height speakers so using the prime satellites is the exact same thing, just different shape. However the shape does make the speaker seem louder and more noticeable with the same amps. So I say the elevations speakers noticeably sound different than the satellites. With Dolby Atmos or DTS X height information that is...

    Why would you push those with an emotiva amp they are only height speakers and I’d assume minimal wattage would be necessary

    • @tacticalAV
      @tacticalAV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is your correct, weather you power them with 50 watts or 1000 rms, it all depends on the output of the preamp voltage rms not peak. The height channels do benefit from external amps, but most receivers require one to drive all 11 or 13 speakers/channels

    • @tacticalAV

      Honestly I am guessing they eventually will just to catch up to the market, $100 says Klipsch will now come up with something to compete with SVS. I certainly understand matching all of the brands the same which is why the elevations fit well in my room here, but tonal matching is important.

    • @tyleryosef9862
      @tyleryosef9862 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't really worry about matching too much. I think that as long as you have similar tweeter designs should be okay. I would personally be more hesitant to mix horns and metal dome tweeters but even then your years would get used to it.

    • @betitos007
      @betitos007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So why not get small Polk Audio shelf speakers and mount them upside down so the tweeter is on the bottom with adjustable wall mounts that you can tilt down and aim them like these? You can unscrew the keyhole mount on the back of a speaker and mount that upside down too. Seems easy to replicate this style of speaker.

      Graham Oliver these speakers are designed to be used as height speakers definitely for Dolby Atmos and DTS X. The other speakers out there that looks similar especially from Klipsch and other companies are actually Dolby Atmos modules so those are meant to sit on top of your Tower speakers and shoot the sound up at the ceiling and Bounce Down. Ryan Pons I really looked at doing that myself, testing the satellites instead, and beyond some subtle sounds and details they are pretty much the same besides the shape.
