    The slow motion drinking of sparkling wine while making prolonged and direct eye contact at 11:48 clearly was saying “I’m living the life you wished you were living”. Well done!

    The runways at Incheon are oriented roughly North-South, and when you approach the airport from the South, as Paul's plane did in this video, the hilly coast you can see in the distance is already in North Korea. This means that when planes take off northbound, they must make a sharp turn ASAP (usually to the left/West) to avoid North Korean airspace, entering which would obviously not be a pleasant prospect at any rate.

    • @mls515
      @mls515 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's close, but not perilously close. Departing any of the 33's or 34's (to the NW), you've got at least 12nm until the prohibited airspace begins. The actual border with N. Korea and FIR boundary are a couple miles past that. Like if you depart 33L/R on the BOPTA/NOPIK/ESPOT or EGOBA SID, you track basically straight for 7nm before turning west. When the 15's & 16's are in use (landing SE), the STARs feed traffic onto decent straight-in final approaches, like 10 mile base-to-final turns. It's like they thought of the airspace considerations when they developed the airport in the 1990's.

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mls515, in my observation on Flightradar24, in northbound takeoffs, longer flight paths before the turn *only* happen when the plane is going to turn right (East) because of the shape of the maritime armistice line between the two Koreas, which is further North in the East direction. When turning to the left (West), planes make the turn *immediately* after takeoff, before even overflying the small chain of islands that's just North of the airport.

    • @mls515
      @mls515 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@goytabr there's runway construction on the 33 side at the moment, forcing most departures in the northwest flow to use the 34 side. The 34 departures join a track to a fix about 15° left of runway centerline after liftoff, about 3 miles away before turning west. This avoids the island to the northwest of the airport. The straight-out track from the 33's mostly avoids this island to the east and stays over water. They probably designed these departure procedures for noise abatement in consideration of the residents and visitors to this island. There's also charted obstacles over 500 feet high on the island, which might be an issue if a departing aircraft were to lose an engine after it's committed to depart.

    You're right, Paul. Sitting at the front of a 747 is a unique experience. I count myself lucky to have done it a number of times. It's amazing to see just how far airline products have come in the last 15-20 years. Thanks for sharing.

    I was lucky as my dad worked for SIA and back in the old days we were entitled to travel First class on their flights. used to travel HKG-SIN-SYD all the time and from their Super Bs to Big Tops and Megatops the transformation of the seats and everything was still a memory i am very fond of, but that APU tone when you just boarded was when those memories all came rushing back, as you wont really hear them sitting at the back or on the upper deck.

    I flew on one of Lufthansa's 747-400s in Economy just a few weeks ago from Frankfurt to Chicago (it was supposed to be a 747-8 but there was a last minute equipment change). It was a great nostalgia trip, but I was disappointed by the LACK of individual air vents on Lufthansa's configuration.

      You must have missed the written fact sheet that appeared on the screen when Paul was about to board at Narita. The plane first flew in 1999, which would make Paul vintage 1987, so 36 or 37 years old now, depending on his birthday. 2011 was the date that Paul estimated for the latest seat refurbishment.

    They may not be the absolute best, but I have a soft spot for Asiana as I managed to get an itinerary back in 2019 that I suspect will be the best airline deal I'll ever score. LHR-ICN-NRT, then HND-ICN, and finally ICN-FRA-LHR, all in business for just £1600. My only A380 and Bibimbap experiences too. Try paying the same in economy for that route today!

    Great Video. Zone A is always wonderful. Funny, you mentioned you were 12 when this particular aircraft entered service.....when I was 12 the 747 began commercial operations with PA and their 121s. To me, the -400 is still "new" .....I happened to be on the delivery flight of SIA's first -412 way back in '89..... ship 9V-SMB (in fact their first was 9V-SMA but for some reason the first one to enter service was -SMB). That said my favourite 747 was the -300. Naturally, SIA's "Big Tops" -312s....

    I used to fly business frequently while working. I was flying LAX to TPE right before Thanksgiving, booked the upper deck on a 747 on UA. I find my seat and get all my things out, hmm...well, maybe people are late as I am the only one. The attendant comes up and says, please gather your things, we are moving you downstairs business. Hurmph.....enter unhappy face. I go down, where do I sit? Anywhere she says, its just you. What??? Had all of busines class to myself. I do enjoy the A380 glad that there seems to be a resurgence of the 4 engine plane, but I will definitely miss the 747, when the last one is retired.

I don't know when they switched to the Star Alliance or why. Korean Air switched from Star to SkyTeam. What was going on? BTW, "bap" is the Korean word for "rice". What you added to the mixed veggies was "hin bap", steamed rice.
