Honda CT70K1 - from swap meet to first ride.

  • I purchased this CT70K1 for $350 at a local swap meet. This is the first video, where we bring it home, assess its electrical system, get it started and take a short ride. Future videos will post, as I continue to clean and replace parts. Thanks for following along. #HondaCT70 #Trail70

    Straightening out the difference in the K0 - K1 distinction (hdlight wo the speedo/ odometer combined and the large taillight) is appreciated! If the K1 continues w the three speed semi-automatic tranny, you said it all. It's amazing to watch you 'go after' these bikes and sharing what's first to begin the diagnosis; you're a true renaissance man infusing up to date mods on these treasured characters. Nice ZTR, beautiful home, and yeah, comfy garage! Awesome Show!

    Like you say it’s a different perspective getting things done having to crawl round on the floor.
    I’m always wary when you touch the HT lead while trying to get spark, years back my mate had an old Tomos moped it wouldn’t stop so I yanked the HT lead off and it shocked me good and proper, similar when I’ve been adjusting distributors on old cars they sometimes bite!!!

    it is insane how much smoke/vapor was coming out/off the bike when you were spinning the flywheel. You pulled the cam covers and a big cloud comes rolling out 😂

    Hey Mike. As a kid I had a HONDA CT-70 The Mean Green one.
    It was a great little bike. It never let me down. Honda quality 👌

    Another fun video, Mike. Glad you decided to try another one in your home garage. Enjoyed troubleshooting along with you. I was doing pretty well guessing what you would check next, especially the timing. When you discovered the head had been off and the cam roller bolt was wrong, I had a feeling... Looking forward to the next one!

    It would help if you had a multimeter, you could have checked at the coil for voltage while cranking, then with the ohm meter checked the continuity from the points when the points close you have continuity and when open it would show a resistance through the magneto coil. A trick I use when I have a fouled plug is set it in a spark plug socket gap end up and pour a little gas in it and light it, it will burn then the smoke will turn black as it burns the residue fouling it, you wait till it goes out and tip it over and light it again till all the gas is burned. I have found it dries out the plug, un fouls it and possibly when warming the plug helps but they always start after I do that if the plug is fouled. I have a Honda that looks just like yours, bought it back in the late 90s but it was manufactured in 10/1971. It is also a K1 automatic 3 speed, in 1972 the red candy apple color ones had a 4 speed manual trans.
    I have been watching videos on electro plating, when restoring these bikes, it would be a great thing to do.
    Watching your video reminds me of people cranking their cars forever when they don't start. clearly something needs to be corrected if it takes that much effort. You need a compression tester, WD40 does help sometimes increases the compression and helps it spin faster.

      I watch your videos because I do learn about the bikes from you, I bought 2 of them from a kid back in the early 90s. I have never got around to doing anything with them but planning to soon, one was a basket case the other was in real bad shape, I used the motor of one in a Go cart I built, it had adjustable tie rod ends, disc brake on axle head lights and tail lights a stick shift. I like to familiarize myself with things I am getting ready to restore, your videos show it all. I am like you, an old guy Young at heart who is a picker of cars and motorcycles. I still have every bike I bought since 1970. I have Harley Davidsons, no not the big bikes the Aermacchi dirt bikes, I have my first bike a 1970 Harley Baja the guy had modified for flat track, another 1970 Baja, a 1971 Baja and a 1976 Baha. I have a Yamaha GTMX 80 made one year only, a 360 Enduro and the 2 honda CT 70s. I like restoring old things bringing them back to life, just finished a Ford 3500 Backhoe, total rebuild, it accidentally rolled into a pond, had to rebuild every part of it. I will subscribe, I think I have watched all your videos. They were very entertaining, especially the one with the head you fought to get off lol. Everything on my tractor was like that, frozen from rust.@@MiniBikeMike

    That screw on the side of the carb adjusts the idle and low speed only.

      There is an air mixture screw beside it. I really need to get the points dialed in before tinkering with the carb.

      @@MiniBikeMike Yes, the air mixture screw is for tunning the idle and low speed. The needle jet tunes the mid throttle and the main jet adjusts the wide open throttle.

    The Fuel turn on valve is installed 180 degrees from how it should be.

      I don’t expect anyone to watch them from beginning to end. I rarely do that myself, on others videos. I include the footage and figure the viewer can skip around to see what they need to see.

    With no air cleaner, the carb is jetted way too lean. Lower the clip on the needle jet about 2 grooves (raises the needle) and increase the main jet by about 5 sizes.

      Nah. After 30 years of tinkering with these, I’m in the camp that an air cleaner on a single carb engine makes zero difference. A friend and I spent a whole summer testing to see if air housing made any difference and our results were that it does not. Now, on multi carb engines, it definitely changes the mixture.

      @@MiniBikeMike The stock air filter unit came with a rubber restrictor inside the rubber tube that goes into the frame. Honda did this to reduce the horsepower on the '72 model. As a consequence, the carb ran too rich so they leaned out the main jet (went from a 65 down to a 58). Put a 65 in place of that 58 and you will be amazed at the power increase.

    I’m thinking either the points were dirty from sitting up or moisture got to the points from pressure washing. I bet the o ring on the point cover is dry rotted. Just spinning it over a while with the drill cleaned up the points and slowly increased the amount of spark.

      I had a 1975 cb360 one time, it was gorgeous, all original with padded tall sissy bar. Anyway I put new points in it and drove it off to college, I was a commuter, 40 miles each way. Well after a class let out at 10 pm one night I left off driving home and it died on the freeway. I coasted to a gas station and looked it over, saw my points lead smashed in the cover, my error, used the tool kit to take the cover off and back on and away we went. Loved that little bike!

    Have you redone a Mr50E yet? My brother has one in my garage next to my k1 that looks just like the one in your truck. We've been talking about fixing it up for years now

    Does it matter what octane gas you use for best performance? What octane do you use?

    Hey Mike. What would lead to the oil in the exhaust valve? I'm in the process of rebuilding a z50 and tried starting it very similar to how you are with the drill and I noticed oil in the exhaust port as well. Good job getting it going! Always look forward to the next one.

      Oil is normal. The engine pumps it up to the top of the head, then it gravity drains back down to the case. If you don’t get oil under those valve covers, you’re gonna have issues with cam / valve train lubrication.

      Nope. Without any tension on the sprocket (no chain), the countersprocket will spin with the revolution s of the engine.
