Wow. This was so comprehensive. I’m just getting started and scouring all the videos I can to learn. Thank you very much for sharing your insights into this arena of photography for Etsy. I’m going to create my photos with the 5:4 ratio and triple check to ensure they are also square ratio compatible. Such a great video!
Thanks for taking the time to share that you enjoyed it. I wouldn’t make too many changes moving forward until we know exactly how things will eventually look.
This was really helpful. My listings are digital downloads with words on the pictures since the info is important so now all of the words are cut off. It looks so unprofessional and I'm hoping customers don't ignore when seeing searches. I'll have to go about creating Etsy listings differently now but really frustrating...and if they change it back or again, those might be altered also. Thanks for breaking it down...I really appreciated that.
new video with my recommendation. th-cam.com/video/BoyHMyMrR3Q/w-d-xo.html Keep in mind the square is ONLY on shop homepages. What Etsy FAILS to share statistics on is how many people actually search for something on Etsy, click into a listing, and THAN continue to a shop.... These are not my buying habits... A lot of Etsy shoppers don't realize "shops" exist nor do they know how to navigate them! So I wouldn't immediately worry... just work towards getting that text in the square portion of the 4:3
Thank you so much for the information! My shop displayed a square ratio one day (in July) on my PC, and I freaked out., because you could barely see my products.... I am going to change them slowly since I have close to 200 listings, because who knows....
Thank you for this detailed information. I'm in real trouble here because I've been putting my little round logo in the lower corner of my primary photos. Now it's getting cut off in the square photos but displays OK in search. The only solution for me now is to just remove it. Guess I'd better get busy!

Great video, we have been going crazy with product thumbnails appearing too close. But think this is because we have been cropping to a square. One question we have is should we use jpeg or png files ?
I just want to set it and forget it. No, that's not being LAZY that's being SMART. I now have over 300 images to replace and I'm LIVID. Why create extra space that you can't USE for the listing. I also question the wisdom of so much negative space when using 4:3 and 5:4 when the photos on a smartphone are so dinky. Anyone over 50 is having a hard time with those dinky sizes. You need every scrap of that space for people of all ages to actually SEE THE PRODUCT. So OF COURSE I'm filling up the frame. This is ridiculous.
I understand that this is frustrating for everyone. The best we can do is just work to make them look the best we can based on what we know. Etsy did finally make an update about thumbnails last week and said changes would be implemented at the beginning of August so I will be paying attention and doing additional testing. I will keep yall up to date!
I have a question: How big a percentage of people have they been using for "testing"? My sales and conversion rates literally fell off a cliff at the beginning of June. There seems to be no good reason for this. But my conversion went from 5.5 to 1.4! But if almost all my images were being cut off to a good portion of those looking at listings, that could explain some of this. The reason I was so livid with rage was I've been trying to pump out product because I'm not converting. When everything has to grind to a halt to change the aspect ratio of a TON of photos, this is a huge waste of my time. And frankly - a lot of this is Etsy spinning wheels and sucking our time in the process. When everything is a square on every listing, any advantage of having the images in a square shape is gone. I don't have an answer as far as the sample size. I only know that some users saw square on the shop home in the browser and some didn't. The test was actually rather small though. Your photos have been displaying as a square all of 2023 on the shop home on mobile within the shopping app. With 67% of sales coming from mobile only a small portion of people are shopping the browser. So I don't think this small test would have created those decreased results.
What software is suitable best for Etsy to make them happy and not nagging you about your listings and your photos and sizes, pixels, ratios, file size, etc.

@@ByKristinaNicole I got a quick question for you while I got you on the horn 😂. I’m new to the Etsy community and I can’t help but notice that some of the top sellers and top selling items, their products are so cheap!. Some of them are below the cost of the product itself. Can you still profit on Etsy even though there are people Selling products at cost?? The same top selling product that you are selling?
@@GoodGuysMedia This is too generic of a question. "Cost" can be different depending on where you are sourcing the product/supplies and the volume purchased. So my recommendation is to price based on your own production and you should continue to work on reducing your own cost (by purchasing more supply, etc...)
Thank you for all of this information! I watched the entire thing. :) Do you think it may be beneficial to make square images since it will take up more of the phone screen than horizontal images? I think it would show off the product better when someone clicks on your product to check it out. I have even seen recommendations to make vertical images so that they will take up a large portion of the phone screen when someone is viewing your product. What do you think?
This is a great question. While they will display within the actual listing larger as a square and vertical, my professional opinion is that if your product is getting cut out of search, they probably won’t click into your listing. If you fit the product into the search rectangular crop say on a vertical image, well the bigger image doesn’t make sense because the product is so small. I can do some testing and get back with you!
Thank you for this video. I have a question though... what would you recommend sellers of digital downloads? I sell printables and scrapbook kits, and if I would follow your suggestions, I should not put anything in the sides where things can get cut off... But digital sellers often have badges or labels on their first image (which is the thumbnail) with the name of the product and their logo... How do you suggest we go about with this? Thank you.

@@ByKristinaNicole well, that is the thing: I do not use photos, since what I sell are papers, backgrounds, embellishments, printables... I don't see how I can keep the sides 'free', if I'm previewing a set of papers though... hmm...

I asked followers on my page to test this out for me too and leave screenshots in the comments. The results from my test showed that the type of phone didn't matter but it was actually if they were viewing my shop page from the Etsy app or mobile browser. People who have the app seen my thumbnails cropped, but those who don't and view from their mobile browser see the thumbnails displayed properly. One person was awesome and tested both leaving screenshots of both views. This whole thing Etsy is doing is really frustrating for me as my thumbnails aren't just a photo. I will be releasing a new video on Friday after I do testing this week! Etsy just announced changes that will take place in early august!
@@ByKristinaNicole Great, thanks a lot for the help and your videos! 😊
Just to clarify, in PhotoShop, the size should be 2500 x 2000 px?
if you crop to a 5:4 aspect ratio the pixel dimensions would be 2500x2000px if you crop to a 4:3 aspect ratio the pixel dimensions would be 2667x2000px!
