    This was really helpful. My listings are digital downloads with words on the pictures since the info is important so now all of the words are cut off. It looks so unprofessional and I'm hoping customers don't ignore when seeing searches. I'll have to go about creating Etsy listings differently now but really frustrating...and if they change it back or again, those might be altered also. Thanks for breaking it down...I really appreciated that.

      new video with my recommendation. th-cam.com/video/BoyHMyMrR3Q/w-d-xo.html Keep in mind the square is ONLY on shop homepages. What Etsy FAILS to share statistics on is how many people actually search for something on Etsy, click into a listing, and THAN continue to a shop.... These are not my buying habits... A lot of Etsy shoppers don't realize "shops" exist nor do they know how to navigate them! So I wouldn't immediately worry... just work towards getting that text in the square portion of the 4:3

    I just want to set it and forget it. No, that's not being LAZY that's being SMART. I now have over 300 images to replace and I'm LIVID. Why create extra space that you can't USE for the listing. I also question the wisdom of so much negative space when using 4:3 and 5:4 when the photos on a smartphone are so dinky. Anyone over 50 is having a hard time with those dinky sizes. You need every scrap of that space for people of all ages to actually SEE THE PRODUCT. So OF COURSE I'm filling up the frame. This is ridiculous.

    • @ByKristinaNicole

      I understand that this is frustrating for everyone. The best we can do is just work to make them look the best we can based on what we know. I will keep yall up to date!

    I have a question: How big a percentage of people have they been using for "testing"? My sales and conversion rates literally fell off a cliff at the beginning of June. There seems to be no good reason for this. But my conversion went from 5.5 to 1.4! But if almost all my images were being cut off to a good portion of those looking at listings, that could explain some of this. The reason I was so livid with rage was I've been trying to pump out product because I'm not converting. When everything has to grind to a halt to change the aspect ratio of a TON of photos, this is a huge waste of my time.
    And frankly - a lot of this is Etsy spinning wheels and sucking our time in the process. When everything is a square on every listing, any advantage of having the images in a square shape is gone. The whole exercise is pointless. It also might be to justify a lot of inflated salaries in the tech department.

    • @ByKristinaNicole
      @ByKristinaNicole  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have an answer as far as the sample size. I only know that some users saw square on the shop home in the browser and some didn't. The test was actually rather small though. Your photos have been displaying as a square all of 2023 on the shop home on mobile within the shopping app. With 67% of sales coming from mobile only a small portion of people are shopping the browser. So I don't think this small test would have created those decreased results.

      @@ByKristinaNicole I got a quick question for you while I got you on the horn 😂. I’m new to the Etsy community and I can’t help but notice that some of the top sellers and top selling items, their products are so cheap!. Some of them are below the cost of the product itself. Can you still profit on Etsy even though there are people Selling products at cost?? The same top selling product that you are selling?

    • @ByKristinaNicole
      @ByKristinaNicole  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GoodGuysMedia This is too generic of a question. "Cost" can be different depending on where you are sourcing the product/supplies and the volume purchased. So my recommendation is to price based on your own production and you should continue to work on reducing your own cost (by purchasing more supply, etc...)

  • @healthyandlovinit8327

    Thank you for all of this information! I watched the entire thing. :) Do you think it may be beneficial to make square images since it will take up more of the phone screen than horizontal images? I think it would show off the product better when someone clicks on your product to check it out. I have even seen recommendations to make vertical images so that they will take up a large portion of the phone screen when someone is viewing your product. What do you think?

    • @ByKristinaNicole
      @ByKristinaNicole  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question. While they will display within the actual listing larger as a square and vertical, my professional opinion is that if your product is getting cut out of search, they probably won’t click into your listing. If you fit the product into the search rectangular crop say on a vertical image, well the bigger image doesn’t make sense because the product is so small. I can do some testing and get back with you!

I sell printables and scrapbook kits, and if I would follow your suggestions, I should not put anything in the sides where things can get cut off... But digital sellers often have badges or labels on their first image (which is the thumbnail) with the name of the product and their logo... How do you suggest we go about with this? Thank you.

    • @ByKristinaNicole

      Same recommendation. Start with a 4:3 or 5:4 and make sure the product and any text or badges are within the center square frame. I don’t personally recommend logos or watermarks on your photos. Using a badge or text in the photo to communicate is fine.

    I asked followers on my page to test this out for me too and leave screenshots in the comments. The results from my test showed that the type of phone didn't matter but it was actually if they were viewing my shop page from the Etsy app or mobile browser. People who have the app seen my thumbnails cropped, but those who don't and view from their mobile browser see the thumbnails displayed properly. One person was awesome and tested both leaving screenshots of both views.
    This whole thing Etsy is doing is really frustrating for me as my thumbnails aren't just a photo. I have my own layout I made with my photo, then a close up view of my art pattern on the side and also the title. I haven't started changing my old thumbnails "yet". But as I'm adding new products, I am trying to create a new thumbnail layout that will still look good displayed both ways. That's not an easy task.

    • @ByKristinaNicole
      @ByKristinaNicole  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't personal test the "browser" on mobile because I can't imagine many people use it when there is an app. I personally have all devices myself which tends to be more accurate than relying on other people! The device does matter. If you are referring solely to your shop home page you are correct. The mobile app shows them as square on all devices and the browser on mac and pc are currently under testing (should be the same for the mobile browers) Where the difference comes into play for the device is in ETSY SEARCH. Android devices show them as 4:3 on etsy app and IOS show as a 5:4 so mobile device does matter for search but not for shop homepage. Yes, it is frustrating but I hope this helps!

    • @soulfulsunflower4328
      @soulfulsunflower4328 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ByKristinaNicole oh I should have explained that better.. I didn't ask anyone to test the browser. I thought it was just the type of phone they were using. I had asked them to click on the link to my shop and leave a screenshot and also the type of phone they use. I was getting different results from people with IPhones (both cropped and not) and the same thing for Android too. The results weren't consistent between the same phone types. I didn't even think about it being the app until one person took a screenshot of the difference when they tried it. When I went back and looked at the different screenshots everyone else left, the ones that were cropped off were from the app - that was the only common denominator. I think it's because not everyone has the Etsy app downloaded on their phone. So if they click on your shop link and they don't have the app installed then it will open the browser version. Same thing if they Google it too.
      I'm not saying this is the end all answer to what's going on or that phone types don't play a role at all. These are just the results from my test I ran among multiple people.
      Also side note.. I honestly find the mobile browser version better than the app, same with other sites as well, but that's another story 😄

      @@StevesRealWorld I find 5:4 to be the most frustrating because you have to leave space on all 4 sides to account for cropping. What’s driving me nuts is I uploaded a square image and it got cropped to a smaller square 🙄 I’m guessing either it’s because my square is larger than 2000 pixels OR that they’re cropping it to a rectangle and then again cropping that to a square again 😫 so my square listing photo gets cropped off on all sides 🙄

    • @ByKristinaNicole

      Swapping your photos does NOT directly affect your listing rank on Etsy, however, it can indirectly affect it in a positive or negative way depending on what you swap out and how shoppers respond to it. So you still want to be checking those stats. If views go down, maybe the new photo doesn't make them want to click... if your views go up that means shoppers are positively responding to your new image! Does that make sense?
