    Here's my thoughts on Embiid vs Jokic:
    Today's NBA regular season is played at like 80% effort. Dame has talked about this. Wade has talked about this. I think PG has talked about this. Their primary focus is getting their numbers and staying healthy.
    So then you get a guy like Embiid and he's able to score 30-40 a night because he's largely able to get to his spot, catch the ball, and as soon as he puts it on the floor and starts to turn the corner, people give him token defense. You might get a Gobert or someone trying to be a rim protector, but for the most part, it's a lot of just riding his hip, getting a hand up, and letting him get the shot off and hoping you can be enough of a distraction that he misses. When he catches on the perimeter, you might get someone jogging toward him or making a half-jump with a hand up, but rarely is it a full-effort close-out.
    But then the playoffs happen. Suddenly, players are downright FIGHTING to keep him from his spot, they're sometimes battling to keep him from even catching, he goes to drive and he's getting bodied, he's getting met with a hard help-side double team, EVERY drive is contested HARD. When he catches on the perimeter, he's getting AGGRESSIVE close-outs and high-effort hands in his face and his outside shooting is cut in half. And he goes from getting 40 a night to suddenly struggling to make half that. He isn't allowed to just dominate and so he has to kick it out and rely on the rest of his team - and that's why he whined after being eliminated "Me and James can't win alone". He also doesn't really make the rest of his team better. When he is struggling, he kicks the ball out to someone, then just kind of stands or maybe makes a screen. He's not moving all over the place trying to get open, trying to hit someone cutting, or otherwise.
    While Embiid is a good regular season player, the tough, hard-nose defense during the playoffs massively impacts Embiid's game compared to Jokic.
    So when Key says he'd take Embiid over Jokic, the follow up question should be "Do you mean against regular season defense or playoff defense?"

      Denver can score 115+ with Jokic not scoring over 10 pts and still consistently win. Philly cant say that.

    • @CalebShimomura
      @CalebShimomura ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It feels like he's doing even more than that, though. There's a book about Bill Bradley in his Princeton years called, "A Sense of Where You Are", and he was described as always looking for the player with the better theoretical shot. The problem with this was that he played at Princeton University, and a bad shot from him was often better than a good shot from everyone else. Coaches would get on his case to just shoot the ball more, and when they were losing late, he would. The one time he let loose was in his last game of his collegiate career in the Final Four against Wichita State in the 3rd-place game (because they had those back then), and he scored 58 points on 29 shots, a Final Four record.
      Jokic is also looking for the player with the best shot. The difference is that he knows the percentages, and his teammates can hit the shots. He's not gonna take the 70% shot when he could dump it off to a cutting Aaron Gordon for the 90% shot. If he has a 50% shot and he sees a player in the corner with a 40% 3-point attempt, he'll pass it. We get on Ben Simmons' case as well as some other guys for making silly assists that don't mean anything or just making a pass because they're "supposed to" when they should really just take it themselves... but Jokic doesn't do that, at least from what I've seen. As Coach Malone has said many times, he takes what the game gives him. He's not concerned with what you think the best play is, or if he's close to getting a triple-double. He's just concerned with piling on point after point and rebound after rebound and assist after assist and win after win.

Im saying, being a nuggets fan and living in Denver, I probably watch more purely Nuggets content than most.) Again not trying to invalidate anyone's opinion or comments. But Jokic is all efficiency. It's not just his high FG/3PT/FT percentages or his TO:Assist ratio. He is deliberate in not needlessly overexerting himself so he can play 90+ games a seaon and not wear down or fade off. he wants to be able to have games where he can rest for part or all of the fourth quarter because in the long run that means he is available and ready for the post season.

    Both are incredible players, but the one scenario where Murray wins FMVP would be if Jokic dips to 20-10-6 for the remaining wins and Murray averages 40-6-10.
    The worst dips Jokic had were the 24-8-6 game against LA and, if I remember right, one game with similar numbers against Minnesota.

    • @rossgumbay7257

      i think Max has a point. There is a narrative that Jokic's post season play has highlighted he shouldve won the MVP. Naturally this has lead to bias towards giving him the finals MVP. Jokic is having one of the best post seasons statistically ever! That bleeds into the finals MVP as well. So I think Murray has to have multiple 50+ -7+ -7+ games to overtake Jokic in finals MVP talk.

    • @felixmalcherek2919
      @felixmalcherek2919 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rossgumbay7257 It's not even just the narrative. Jokic is just consistently the best player on the field. It takes the a whole team effort by Miami to barely get a win in a game where none of the other Nuggets play well and if one other player does great and the role players play ok to good, Denver just wins in every scenario, barring 3 or 4 Heat combining for 90-25-30.

I am glad that he plays in this era because had he lived in the previous eras people would be saying that he wouldn't survive in today's NBA because he's too slow. Even though there are people like you who make the opposite claim I think there are a lot less people like you now than there would have been people claiming that Jokić wouldn't be a star in today's NBA had he played in the 1960s or 1990s.
