My sister & I took glider flight at Hadapsar gliding center in 1970. The cost per person then was Rs 2/-. Hadapsar was then out of the city & aerial view was beautiful. A Parsi gentleman piloted our glider, which was open and the passenger sat next to the pilot.

In gliding we dont use the word "breeze" ,the actual word is "Thermal" and to find a thermal just watch at the eagles soaring around without flapping their wings.👍 Glider pilot 1979-80

Gliding poses significant risks as gliders lack engines and rely entirely on wind conditions for flight. A large, open area devoid of civilization is required for safe takeoff and landing, as any wind shifts or emergencies necessitate immediate landing. Proximity to buildings is strictly prohibited. Pilots have limited control over the aircraft, leaving them at the mercy of external factors, which is not ideal for safe flying.

I took a joy ride here in 1982 when there were wooden gliders. Landing was super smooth. Exhilarating experience 👍

I visited the gliding Center in last couple of months, but they said it is banned for civilians as there was an accident of glider. Now it’s available only for trainee pilots. I don’t know whether it is available for us or not now a days.
Hi, may I know on which year did you visit this gliding centre? I had visited this place on May 2022 but I didn't see any gliders there, I only saw people running and playing all over the runway. I ccouldn't even get a chance to speak to any officials.

Why the back seat? Looks like no controls in the back. Pure joy ride version. The front seat is the best view, the actual pilots view.
Back seat is keep looking either at the sky or controls.
You need a glider pilot license to sit in front and take control.

Still in its infancy but great to see gliding picking up in Maharashtra. The Super Blanik glider made in the Czech Rep is a great trainer aircraft. The glider is being winch launched with flags / semaphore used for comm. instead of radios. Given the warm climate and superb thermal conditions, long flights are surely possible but DGCA will not authorize is given the close proximity of the Pune Airport (5 kms/ N) . Hope to see this beautiful activity (chess in the skies) pick up more in India. Thanks
This center is over 62 years old, I think. Unfortunately, DGCA barely takes care of it, so there are not many facilities or better gliding equipment available.
@@amitpatilamit , it is not in the functions of the DGCA to run glider clubs. Gliding activities are taken up by private clubs (municipal, national, airforce, etc). Pune airport has 1 RWY 10/28 and it is quite surprising to see this club authorised for glider operations. Gliders could potentially disrupt commercial air-traffic where larger aircrafts on their flight path (landing & take-off) cannot deviate to avoid a glider in its path. I am sure this club is not authorised to exceed 500 mts in altitude. At a finesse (glide rate of appx 20), these gliders could barely turn around a radius of 2 - 5 kms. They would be restricted to flying very "local" and would not be able to maximise on any thermals they would come across hence their flight barely exceeds 5 mins of duration. The club should also introduce a 10 minute "theory" class specially for youngster to teach them the basics of flying, aerodynamics and meteology. This could lead to the creation of some good national gliding clubs in the country.
@RyzZaveri Looks like you are not aware of this, but the gliding center in Hadapsar Pune is probably the only center in India that is owned and used by DGCA. It has been like that since Nehru days as it was his idea to start one. Which is also one of the reasons for cheaper pricing and not well maintained equipment.

This is amazing that the glider doesn't need a small electric motor when suddenly there is no more wind or the glider gets blown away and can't reach the airport anymore?
The Glider is supposed to glide without a lot of air (the net weight of the glider is less than 300kg), sufficient to keep it afloat even with very less air.

No planes ...they are pulled by a motor operated pulley on the other end of the runway at high speed which creates the thrust required to propel them in the air

Yes but not during Monsoon and I don't know why they are so selective about who they allow inside. These days they stop allowing entries after 10-12 people.

Nothing like an 'assured ride" my friend. They don't let many people in, maximum 10-15 launches in a day, not more.

They open by 9 and by 10ish the gliders come out of the hangers. Wait for the monsoon season to get over.

At what time we have to go to book the tickets
Go directly by 9 -9:30 am. First pray they let you in and once you are there, you can buy the ticket from the hanger. The staff is extremely helpful. Once you are in the premises, they'll guide you.

How did you get the entry?
I visited the club in June! The club is closed on Friday and Saturday, so call them on Wednesday/Thursday and notify them about your visit. They will ask you to call again on Sunday morning for confirmation (as sometimes they cancel the activity due to unsuitable weather conditions)
