A hell of a lot of Megadeth's themes and lyrics refer to the cold war - ever since the 60s Cuban missile crisis and throughout the 80s and 90s, there was a huge cultural fear of atomic annihilation which influenced everything from music to video games like Fallout. Even their band name references this. As a 'Megadeath' means a million deaths due to a nuclear war.
I don't care what anyone says, this was the absolute best lineup!!! Chris Poland on guitar and one of the absolute most underrated drummers EVER, Gar Samuelson!!! R.I.P GAR!! 🤘🤘🤘
Absolutely! I saw this line up twice at the El Dorado Saloon. A small club in Sacramento, CA. Gar was this big tall dude. I think people used call him a praying mantis on the drums. Megadeth was badass in small venues too. Chris was a ripping guitar player. Back then, Dave was playing a lot of leads, but he was putting more effort into singing, so Chris took over more leads and of they were playing multiple solos in their songs, so both would do this live too.
The lyrics are still relevant! Another banger from Megadeth. Angry Again and Sweating Bullets for more Megadeth. But A Tout Le Monde would be a very different Megadeth reaction.
Smokey, I’m impressed with your knowledge of music history and real history for someone that didn’t live through it. History is SO important for so many reasons no matter the subject. You always know more than I expect you to about music history. Seems like your instinct is right 90% or more of the time. That’s one reason why I’m here and keep coming back! Love you guys 🤘🔥
There WAS a huge conflict going on in the 80s. It was called the Cold War. No bullets fired but still a huge threat that permeated our lives, which got a lot of attention from music and movies.
You gotta take into account that while we had no major conflicts going on at this time, we were smack dab in the middle of the Cold War, and had the ever ominous possibility of nukes falling from the sky. I was only 8 or 9 when Mt St Helens erupted and I thought it was the start of WW3.
🎶🎸🎤🎸🎶 I got to see Megadeth in concert at the beginning of September. Dave totally still has it. "Countdown To Extinction" is still my favorite Megadeth album & song. Thanks for the afternoon rock session. P.L.U.R.R. from ATX!
Agree with many of the comments for 'Ashes In Your Mouth' as next Megadeth track but I would ideally love for you try an Anthrax song with John Bush soon. Either 'Only' or 'Safe Home' (Safe Home MV has Keanu Reeves in it).
Hell yeah, old school Megadeth is the best! I highly recommend checking out "Ashes In Your Mouth" from their hit album Countdown To Extinction, I think it's one of the best songs Megadeth has ever made. Or "Cèlébutante" from the new album, I loved the new album and I think it's the best album Megadeth has put out since Endgame (2008). Great reaction as usual guys 🤘🤘🤙🤙
I am so glad that you guys finally reacted to this. Such an awesome and iconic song. Definitely one of the best in metal history. Keep up the great work guys. And I will request Beartooth Devastation. It’s a killer track. I’ll run over to Patreon and request it also. Have a great day guys.
I'm not big on Megadeth, but this one was on V-Rock radio in GTA Vice City, along with other great metal of the 80ties, and it worked with GTA pastige of commentary of society.
Here’s a perspective for you; I first heard this song in the 80’s when I was 15 and I sang it in reference to Russia and the Cold War we were in. Tomorrow I’ll be 50 and I’m singing along with you two thinking about Russia and a possible nuclear war today. Unfortunately, not much has changed.🤯
As someone who was in their target audience when this came out, I can assure you the Cold War did not feel like a time of peace. Not even near the end.
As for the song Peace Sells, it's mainly about the stereotypes and how metal heads were treated back in the 80's as being lazy, not working and metal being anti religion. As the song progresses it points out actual main issues of government power and over reach and that all they care about is conflict whether its within its own country or with other countries. As I stated in previous comment war is big business..... look how Bush profited from the oil business after 9/11 when Desert Storm was a go 🤘😎🤘
Still timely to apply today. The point is not that I am against causes and beliefs. Just don’t necessarily share your belief and actually think for myself. “It’s still We the people, right?”
This album was released when I turned 18, the hilarious irony is that those "hippys" who grew up as teens and young adults during the late 60's were now the parents of the metal heads, these lyrics reflect the hypocrisy of being told by "free lovers" go to church, cut your hair respect your elders, go to rehab, go to collage, conform conform conform, the "metal head" anthem became "truth over money" we were able to see through the lies of image, and our parents were beginning to realize they stopped believing in peace too.
Here is a gem of buried thrash royalty that gets no love. Stormtroopers of Death (SOD) were hard enough to be the theme song for Headbangers Ball. Check out the live version of "Seargent D" with Billy Milano jumping into the crowd from top stack and Scott Ian (of Anthrax fame) stomping the stage...EpicThrash!
Still have my autographed cassette of them on the Peace Sells cassette. Dave's a grumpy guy but had him laughing when I got him to sign a pic from a Rock mag. He nudged the bass player and they both started laughing and Mustaine told me the whole story behind that photo shoot. He told me that all he could think about that day was to hurry the fuck up on the photo shoot. I asked him what he had in his hands in the pic and he said a cognac and a carrot in the other hand.
Duuuuuude this is one of my favorite megadeth songs!!!! About time yall got to this one. Every single word said still rings just as true today as it did back then
While there was no big war going on at the time, there were a lot of smaller conflicts. You had USSR still in Afghanistan, the IRA in Great Britain, the US was in the middle of the Iran-Contra scandal, and had terror attacks in Europe. I just this song was about the war industrial complex.
Holy shit didn't even realize you didn't do this yet. 12/10. Definitely check out The Conjuring and Good Mourning/Black Friday from this album. You'll recognize it because you already listened to We'll Be Back (Black Friday that is). Also Wake Up Dead has a funky bass line you'll love. Every song on this album has some funky bass honestly.
Early to mid-eighties saw a peak in the Cold War with the threat of nuclear war at probably its highest point since the Cuban crisis of the 1960's. While nobody was all that worried by it on a daily basis the media played on it a lot with dramas like Threads (here in the UK) and the like showing what would happen in the event of the red button being pressed. So while there was no real conflicts as such the events, and worries, of the time gave rise to songs like this as well as Set the World Afire as far as Megadeth were concerned.
From the same album either Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring or Bad Omen. A brilliant album from start to finish. And another top bit of reacting (as always) from you lads too.
I have seen Megadeth many times over the years, and they are always amazing live. Especially the first time I saw them in 1985 on their first tour. Dave was still pretty pissed off after being fired from Metallica. Check out the title track from their first album, Killing Is My Business…..And Business Is Good.
Plenty of armed conflict in the 1980's. We were involved in Libya, Grenada, Lebanon, and Iran. Also we were in a long standing cold war with the Soviet Union.
Parent Music Resource Center, founded by Tipper Gore and others to clean up rock music and “protect the children”. Because parents apparently couldn’t stop their children from going to record stores and seeing album covers and buying music that this group thought was objectionable. There was no internet. Their was no music sharing services. The music the group was against wasn’t being played on the radio. So the only way the children could get it was to buy it. I remember buying a Jane’s Addiction album with a solid white cover because the PMRC banned the cover art.
The Cold War -- tension between the US and Soviet Union from like 1947-1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved. There was no actual war but conflict. Huge arms race as each of the other superpowers were continually working on nuclear weapons. There was always a threat. There was also the conflict in East and West Germany separated by the Berlin Wall. The Scorpions song Winds Of Change is about both and the video depicts it.
More Megadeth reactions pls: A Tout Le Monde (prefer the original version), Ashes in Your Mouth, Conquer or Die, Devil's Island, Dialectic Chaos+This Day We Fight, Dread & The Fugitive Mind, Dystopia, Fatal Illusion, Five Magics, Good Mourning/Black Friday, Hook in Mouth, In My Darkest Hour, Kick the Chair, Last Rites/Love to Death, Lucretia, My Last Words, Mechanix, Never Walk Alone, Promises, Set the World Afire, Skin o' My Teeth, Sudden Death, Take No Prisoners, The Conjuring, The Right to Go Insane, The Scorpion, Train of Consequences, Trust & Wake Up Dead. Sorry for the long list guys 🙏
I love this song! But I think it's ironic that Megadeth wrote a song about the pmrc, but did nothing to defend the attack on musicians and censorship. The filthy 15 as it was called (15 artists who were singled out by the pmrc as being offensive and disruptive to youths etc...) and only three artists came to defend ALL of the music and record industry. John Denver, Frank Zappa and Dee Snider, the latter of whom absolutely destroyed the pmrc at the hearing. You guys should react to Dee Snider's pmrc full testimony. Despite losing and the pmrc getting their wish to put "parental advisory" stickers on albums (It was damaging in the short term to artists, but ultimately really didn't help the pmrc's cause at all in the long run). John Denver's testimony compared the government censorship to nazism which put a real hurt on those doing the accusing because John Denver was considered a respectable musician and humble as apple pie, but they were completely humiliated by Dee Snider of Twisted Sister who they grossly underestimated. It was a thing of beauty... and still is!
The intro was used for MTV News for many years… Also, This was a karaoke classic at one bar I used to frequent a lot when I was still single only every one changed it from Piece Sells but who’s buying to peace sells F#*+ you Ryan busting the chops of one of the bartenders no matter who sang it
This was most of the world’s first introduction to Megadeth-hit album, video on MTV, spotlight on Headbangers Ball, public (although minor) feud with Metallica… Strong recipe for success 👍
As a female, I grew up on hair metal, thrash and The Spice Girls....thanks to mum and dad.... so wearing Megadeth, Pantera, sepultura, Carcass Tshirts etc bought me joy when challenged on songs lol.
Should have started your Megadeth journey with this song! I bought this album when I was 15 because the album cover was awesome. Knew of Metallica a short time before this but not by much. I always liked Megadeth more than Metallica, more attitude in my opinion. Stil love Metallica but Megadeth is my overall choice.
This song came out at the height of the "Cold War" with Russia. So, there might not have been an actual armed conflict going on, people were freaking out at the possibility of a nuclear war with Russia
The opening bass line and riff was the opening for MTV News when they played music videos and Kurt Loeder was doing a quick news segment on the channel as well as being a VJ
I wanted to listen to Country Boner by Puscifer and stumbled upon your channel and I love you guys! One of you mentioned playing this in the club or something like that. When I was looking for the song I had another version in mind! There is an album called "V Is For Viag##, the Va#### Remixes" track 13 Cuntry Boner (Disco Viag## Mix) This one really slaps there are background singers and everything it is epic for what it is and the song in general is much better delivered this way! Just my take... I think he is leaning on the stereotypes of southern folk in a dirty substance induced hillbilly kind of way! Almost poking fun at the rebel flag wielding culture that revolves around the genre by taking a role as his performance art version of the scary extreme of that stereotype! What does anybody else think about that!?!
The song isn't specifically about a conflict or a war, It was about what was going on domestically. It was right around the time groups like NWA got together and wrote songs like Straight out of Compton. In fact if you played this song back to back with that song it would feel like you're visiting two different neighborhoods of the same city.
I have a request... As I'm an aging metalhead that truly appreciates the genre I think this would be a proper request... Testament "Electric Crown" Live from London... Energy? Brutality? Shredding? This checks all the boxes. I dare ya to react to this one...🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great reaction guys! Honestly, I’ve been listening to this song since it came out in 86 and I’m still 100% sure what he means by “Peace sells but who’s buying.” One theory is that he’s talking about the arms race of the 80’e between USA and USSR, where both countries were mass producing selling weapons across the globe in order to secure “peace”, by the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction. Another theory is that it’s about government controlled media and censorship, like the PMRC, that people “buy” into but is actually a form of mind control (so the story goes). It can mean different things to different people, but it’s a great song. Good job tackling it!
His attitude in his voice and his playing in this song are so fitting to the words, and meaning, and it's substance, especially to what was the political environment of the time.
What´s happening in the world today, this in unfortunately quite relevant song. Relevant or not, this was A class when I first heard it 1986 from the c-cassette, on it´s still A class enjoying it with you today. Keep it going, with Megadeth you rarely go wrong !
80's was Cold War with Russia and conflicts with the Middle East. Early 90's was fall of USSR that has in a lot of ways lead to the current conflicts with Russia
This is the song that got my attention in the 80's and I started listening to MEGADETH. THE ALBUM before this one is Excellent Thrash Metal of it's Day, Timeless to me.
I was a child in the 80s, and the Cold War (albeit cold and not hot) was something we thought about every day. Soviet submarines would stalk our shores, playing hide and seek with our coast guards, and huge military exercises would take place. There were some close calls too, almost triggering WW3. Then, we had several minor conflicts, like the Falklands War, Grenada, Afghanistan, Iran-Iraq war, and the first Intifada in Israel. Plenty to worry about ;)
🤘🔥🔥🔥 You should check out POSSESSED finally guys, it's time for the origins of death metal. Possessed - the exorcist Edit: also they're tons of other good thrash metal bands out there need to be discovered than Megadeth and Metallica.
I think it's pretty freaking amazing how this song from the '80s is still relevant today! Lyrics are fire!🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘🤘
There was the "Cold" war with Russia back then. President Reagan and President Gorbachev I believe were at each other's throats, so to speak.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘🤘
War... war never changes.
This tune will be relevant as long as the world has moron leaders. It just never ends.
I always think this too! Probably even more relevant today and my generation really thought the world would be better by now.
Bass line was used for MTV News in the ‘90s
Wow I forgot about that
A hell of a lot of Megadeth's themes and lyrics refer to the cold war - ever since the 60s Cuban missile crisis and throughout the 80s and 90s, there was a huge cultural fear of atomic annihilation which influenced everything from music to video games like Fallout.
Even their band name references this. As a 'Megadeath' means a million deaths due to a nuclear war.
Ironically...we are closer than ever to nuclear war. And censorship is off the charts. Yuri Bezemenov called it
Missile Command...
I don't care what anyone says, this was the absolute best lineup!!! Chris Poland on guitar and one of the absolute most underrated drummers EVER, Gar Samuelson!!! R.I.P GAR!! 🤘🤘🤘
Damn Right!!!
agreed
Absolutely! I saw this line up twice at the El Dorado Saloon. A small club in Sacramento, CA. Gar was this big tall dude. I think people used call him a praying mantis on the drums. Back then, Dave was playing a lot of leads, but he was putting more effort into singing, so Chris took over more leads and of they were playing multiple solos in their songs, so both would do this live too.
They were like a thrash / jazz band with Gar.. Fucking killer band
Fuck yeah, brother!
The lyrics are still relevant! Another banger from Megadeth. Angry Again and Sweating Bullets for more Megadeth. But A Tout Le Monde would be a very different Megadeth reaction.
I want a tout le monde played at my funeral when I go
Fun fact: the opening bassline was used as the intro to MTV back in the day!
MTV News with Kurt Loder.
Headbangers Ball Intro That Is!!!!
No..Headbangers Ball was S.O.D...
This was MTV News Intro...
What a year for metal 1986 was, Master of Puppets, Peace Sells, Reign in blood were all released
Great year in movies too.
Licensed to ill
Feel free to hit us with Old-School Megadeth anytime.
Thank you so much my friend
Smokey is a knowledgeable dude! I love their intros to the videos.
Megadeth ~ Dawn Patrol. The bass line and beat in it is so dope.
Megadeth - hook in mouth
Devil's Island!!!! Devil's Island!!!! Devil's Island!!!! Devil's Island!!!! Devil's Island!!!! Devil's Island!!!!
There WAS a huge conflict going on in the 80s. It was called the Cold War. No bullets fired but still a huge threat that permeated our lives, which got a lot of attention from music and movies.
You are right. It was wrapping up around the late 80s into the early 90s
found this album in 86 when i was 9yrs old..first metal album i ever heard,,changed my life
You gotta take into account that while we had no major conflicts going on at this time, we were smack dab in the middle of the Cold War, and had the ever ominous possibility of nukes falling from the sky. I was only 8 or 9 when Mt St Helens erupted and I thought it was the start of WW3.
Yes It was the tail end of the cold war but you are correct
🎶🎸🎤🎸🎶 I got to see Megadeth in concert at the beginning of September. Dave totally still has it. "Countdown To Extinction" is still my favorite Megadeth album & song. Thanks for the afternoon rock session. P.L.U.R.R. from ATX!
Cornflakes/ conflicts.....you boys haven't been smokin, HAVE YOU?! 🤣🤣❤️❤️ Much love,guys!
😆
Agree with many of the comments for 'Ashes In Your Mouth' as next Megadeth track but I would ideally love for you try an Anthrax song with John Bush soon. Either 'Only' or 'Safe Home' (Safe Home MV has Keanu Reeves in it).
Safe home!
That opening bass riff used to be the intro to ‘MTV News’ back when that network played music.
So that just happened... fire.. memories..
Megadeth - Liar
got some impressive vocals in I think you'd appreciate.
Now you're speaking my language, I was in high school when this came out!! Dave mustaine is a legend!! 💯🔥🔥
One of my all time favorite albums and not just because Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson were both born in my hometown.
That opening bass line was the background music for MTV News back in the day.
Old School MD!! I love "Wake Up Dead", too. The whole album is great.
Yay! So happy you covered this song! It`s my favorite by them! Keep On Rockin'
My first Megadeth song 🎶 And I fell in love 😍!!!! Then I listened to “ Wake Up Dead !!!!! ❤!!!!
A favorite of mine as a teen. This song was a reason i bought the vinyl.
Y’all should react to “Rust In Peace… Polaris” next, that shit really goes hard
I got to see Megadeth in a 1600 capacity venue (standing room only) 1n 1998. It was awesome.
This is the first song i learned on my bass. Chunky and funky 🤘
This is easily among the top 10 metal songs of the '80s, probably of all time as well.
Morning guys! Hell ya! Love Megadeth! Great album! Great reaction!🤓❤️ Would love to hear more off the rust in peace album. 🙂
Finishing move - a version of the brainbuster called "The Rattlehead".
Here’s a perspective for you; I first heard this song in the 80’s when I was 15 and I sang it in reference to Russia and the Cold War we were in. Tomorrow I’ll be 50 and I’m singing along with you two thinking about Russia and a possible nuclear war today. Unfortunately, not much has changed.🤯

a peaceful world doesn't make anyone money, and that's why we are where we are

4:50 Dave Mustaine once met two people wearing megadeth t-shirts and he went to say hi, but they did not know who we was.
Wow

The song that you gotta react to next is ‘Manifest Destiny’ by D.R.I.
One of my top 3 fav Megadeth songs 🤘🖤🤘🖤🤘🖤
Anything from Peace Sells, Rust In Peace and Countdown to Extinction for starters. I'd recommend My Last Words from Peace Sells.
The people who don't have a voice want it, but only the rich can buy it.
Thank you guys. One of my top MD's songs. Dave is extremely philosophical about certain topics for sure.
So glad you found and like their music.
Saw this tour awesome
Btw guys, starting to really dig y'all's reactions to metal.
The intro was used for MTV News for many years…
Also, This was a karaoke classic at one bar I used to frequent a lot when I was still single only every one changed it from Piece Sells but who’s buying to peace sells F#*+ you Ryan busting the chops of one of the bartenders no matter who sang it
Megadeth finishing move would be Tombstone Pile Driver
Such a classic song with one of the most recognizable riffs! MTV news used the opening bass line of this song for years.
This was most of the world’s first introduction to Megadeth-hit album, video on MTV, spotlight on Headbangers Ball, public (although minor) feud with Metallica…
Strong recipe for success 👍
Good morning boys! Loved the reaction today!
This was the song that got me into metal, back in 86 ish. My dad even took me to see them in Long Beach, CA.
He was an Iron Maiden fan.
Back in the day in the Bay Area this switched me from Metallica to Megadeth, but Exodus, Testament, and Nuclear Assault are still my favs.
In 86 we were still fearing a nuclear exchange with Russia. Sweating Bullets is a good one.
the familiar little bit at the beginning is what they used to use to introduce MTV NEWS clips for years.
It's crazy but on the one hand we want peace. But in order to get it, we need to fight for peace.
the verse riff is heavy and chunky but catchy and groovy as hell. Dave is the man \m/
The opening bass line and riff was the opening for MTV News when they played music videos and Kurt Loeder was doing a quick news segment on the channel as well as being a VJ
in my Days you only wore a shirt if you bought it at a concert, sooo when someone had a Rock shirt they went to the concert no posers
It's the top of the Thrash Metal scene! I love this album! You should still go and watch the video for this!
Always Fun watching you🙂🙂🙂🤘
The themes still resonate today right? Not only that, but I think the music is still pretty damn fresh sounding 30 plus years later
MTV used the bass intro as part of their intro music into their MTV News segments.
The song isn't specifically about a conflict or a war, It was about what was going on domestically. It was right around the time groups like NWA got together and wrote songs like Straight out of Compton. In fact if you played this song back to back with that song it would feel like you're visiting two different neighborhoods of the same city.
Sounds like he's saying "Pizzas, but who's buying"🤣
Wowsers indeed
Plenty to worry about ;)
Bad omen - like a villain 💯🔥
🤘🔥🔥🔥
You should check out POSSESSED finally guys, it's time for the origins of death metal. Possessed - the exorcist
Edit: also they're tons of other good thrash metal bands out there need to be discovered than Megadeth and Metallica.
