Two guitar players, Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland (on this album). The reason you hear more is because they layer the guitar tracks in the studio. The main rhythm guitars play throughout the song and when it's time for the solo(s) they layer that on top of the rhythm guitars. When they play live one guitarist will play the rhythm while the other does the solo. Dave Mustaine also handles the vocals as well as playing guitar. He was the original lead guitar player for Metallica back when they first started.
@LFR Family they usually double or quad track the guitars to add to the definition of the guitars in the lower mids and low end ,and to thicken the sound of the lead guitar
Megadeth always had two lead guitars; Dave Mustaine (vocals & guitar) & Chris Poland on Peace Sells, so every song shreds 😁 I've been rocking this song since my high school bush party days 😁 🤘❤🇨🇦
You gotta do sweating bullets by megadeth....Dave is on point with this track, vocally, guitar...the song is Damn near perfect. It's my favorite by megadeth...
"Peace sells, but who's buying?" is a reference to the fact, that people always claim they want worls peace... but if you look around, you wouldn't believe that to be, the case.
You would enjoy watching this one performed live. Dave Mustaine was originally lead guitar for Metallica. I saw them in early '83 in SF, when Dave was still with them. I remember Cliff's bass solo and thinking what? Bass players don't do solos! But they blew me away...I was impressed and so I bought my first album of theirs, "Kill 'em All", when it came out later that year.
Dude you witnessed history and it didn't last long. The level of talent that's come and gone in Metallica is amazing really Dave, cliff, James what are the odds that demi God's all met like that? Even for just one album
Megadeth is a lot of little solos, just how Dave does it. This is also a period where it was common to record one guitar on the left and one on the right so you could tell who was soloing at any point. Slayer did that very consistently through their career
You forgot the next line, which happens to be the key one in order to put the social critique into context: "But it better work this time." is a jab at the commies who perpetually delude themselves into thinking they just didn't commie hard enough last time and this time will be different.
This Megadeth track summed up the attitude of metal in the era of President Reagan (cabbie-turned-prez) ... Reagan and the political class were so wrapped up Dave Mustaine was so creative, despite he and the band trippin' on h in 1985/ '86... The guitars were done by Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland, but what bands do in the studio is, they double track their rhythms and guitar harmonies w/ overdubs, so that the sound on the record comes out fuller and tighter. Iron Maiden have said that most Maiden songs have up to 6 guitar lines tracked, that was why when they upgraded from 2 guitars to 3, they had plenty of choices to play live in concert. Queen used that technique of overdubs to 'layer' vocals and instruments on their records to give their songs a big sound, even tho only 4 musicians were involved.
I think Megadeth had a lot of political themes in their lyrics. Even their name has political origins. It came from the phrase, "Arsenal of megadeath", which lead singer/Dave Mustaine saw in a pamphlet by former Senator and Presidential candidate Alan Cranston and refers to a hypothetical body count following a nuclear war.
Maiden has three guitars because Jannick Gers replaced Adrian Smith in the 90s, and when Smith came back they didn't kick Gers out to make use of him. Maybe because they liked more guitar sounds, but if Smith had never left, or if he'd never come back, they'd probably still have two guitars.
@@JasonBenesh That's debatable... Steve Harris wanted 3 guitars in Iron Maiden back in 1976. But they had trouble keeping 2 guitarists back then. 'If Smith had not left' never happened... so...
I remember when this came out when I was a teenager..still a kick ass song. Dave mustaine is why I play a flying v guitar still at almost 50 years old.
The beginning bass part was used by MTV back in the day so anyone who thought I've heard that before well there you go. Dave Mustaine also doesn't get enough credit for helping to write some of the songs for the Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning Albums for Metallica but it's good he moved on and found success with Megadeth.
"what do you mean I ain't kind, just not your kind". That is one of the best lyrics of all time. Also, Rush's "if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
I got to meet Dave Mustaine in 2005 at Gigantour in Atlanta. I kept asking my husband "Please tell me this was a dream, I don't want to wake up", after meeting him. I was totally star struck and he was so nice in person. Megadeth got me into Metal when I was 12.
Mustaine brainstormed the tune title while smashing with a young lady "who felt sorry for him While he was homeless and hunching down at the distribution center where Megadeth practiced, Mustaine would some of the time exploit some assistance or two. It was on one such event that motivation struck and metal history was changed until the end of time. "There was a young lady who had compassion for me and now and again would call up and request that I come over, and we would go through the night together and she'd feed me and I'd get tidied up and stuff like that," "Also I woke up one morning and I saw a magazine on her end table and it said, 'Peace sells, nobody's buying it.' And I went, 'Wow, I have to compose a melody concerning that.' So I switched the words up a tad and I began composing the tune, obviously I was inhabiting the practice building like I said, so I had no paper, and I took a pen and composed the verses on the divider there. Right up 'til today, I actually keep thinking about whether the woman who had that practice building was adequately shrewd to remove that divider and immortalize it." Though Ellefson plays the immediately unmistakable bass line for Megadeth's exemplary single "Peace Sells," it was Mustaine who concocted it. "We were up at [Killing Is My Business co-producer] Karat Faye's home," Ellefson reviewed to Classic Rock. "I had this BC Rich Eagle bass that we'd tore the frets out of. I recall Dave got the bass and begun playing what might turn into the Peace Sells bass line, very much like that." Mustaine composed the tune to challenge standard view of metalheads as "dumbassess" Megadeth have been known as a great deal of things throughout the long term, however one descriptor that Mustaine really embraces is the expression "thinking man's band," which isn't really is business as usual when you realize that he wrote "Peace Sells" unequivocally to dissipate the famous thought of metalheads as stupid dimwits and to exhibit the knowledge that metal fans are able to do. "I composed this is on the grounds that I was worn out on individuals ridiculing metal overall and deriding individuals who are metal fans," "It was difficult for me to watch the manner in which we were generalized on TV, similarly as numb nuts. Generally, I feel that a ton of artists are extremely astute and exceptionally gifted. It's a bummer the manner in which individuals had been generalized."
Megadeth always shredds. Greatest metal band in history so far. You hear multiple guitars for 2 reasons, first they layer the guitars and second because of the way David Elifson plays the bass, he maintains the rhythm very well.
You wanna get some mad respect for this band the 2nd guitarist Chris Poland He has been a jazz player almost all his life that's how Dave found him and convinced him to play metal. Go check out his band OHM for some jazz and fusion. He is a ridiculous guitarist. And one of my all time favs next to Marty Friedman who was in Megadeth also for years and is incredible in his solo work
Marty Friedman is a badass, but Chris Poland started this with Mustaine. I love the, "Peace Sells", album the most. It's what got me into the genre called THRASH. I liked it before I liked Metallica, so... Dave Mustaine out did Metallica IMHO but not many people agree with me. Listen to Wake Up Dead or Black Friday. Way more intense than anything at that time. The album that made me a fan of Metallica after this came out was Master Of Puppets.
When this single was released there was a huge 60's "flower power" nostalgia vibe going on in the U.S. You could go into nearly any store and find peace symbols for sale; necklaces, earrings, t-shirts, temporary tatoos, etc.. This was also near the end of the Cold-War, and tensions were high between the U.S. and Russia. The U.S. President at the time had been caught on a hot-mike during a radio interview making a joke about bombing Moscow (he was unaware that the station had come back from commercial). The in-your-face message of the song is why do we find it so easy to divide ourselves, and make it so difficult to find common ground, while using the idea of peace as a commodity to make a profit from.
If you want to see an amazing drum set then you need to react to Steelheart...Can't Stop Loving You. The band is great, the lead singers vocals are amazing and the drummers drum set is bad ass!!!

For some real shredding, check out Annihilator. Jeff Waters' fingers make the strings bleed.
And talk about your "kill-the-drummer" beats. Like automatic gunfire.
If you've not yet heard any Annihilator yet, best to start at the start (1989) :
- Alison Hell (Alice In Hell) (fans may insist you react to this track with the inclusion of the intro track, an insturmental called Crystal Ann - it certainly does provide a nice set-up to Alison Hell).
- Wicked Mystic
- Word Salad
- Human Insecticide
I like this guy!
This song is now in your brain FOREVER
