Great, brilliant album, sir...my two favourite Marillion albums are clutching at straws and seasons end and this song is an absolute pearler , as we say in England... Holidays in eden is also brilliant... instant subscription sir 👍
Great reaction Todd. Thanks! This is the first song on the first album with Steve Hogarth. As a big Marillion fan I was a little nervous about losing Fish back in the day. but as soon as this came on I said "they're back!" It was a great choice on their part to make this the first cut with the "new guy" It helped assuage the fears of a few fans I think. It's very "classic Marillion" sounding.
Nice reaction 👍🏻 'Power' is a great song live! Check out the album Afraid of Sunlight, it's Steve Rothery his favourite one. Pete T. is there from the 1st album, and Mark Kelly 🎹 and Steve R. too. The 1st drummer was Mick Pointer, he left after their 1st album Script ('83). Mick founded the band Arena in '95. Their first album 'Songs from the lion's cage' is quite good with a singer who did his best to imitate Fish 😏. Steve R. plays a guitar solo on one song on the album (Crying for help IV). Ian Mosley joined Marillion in '84 on drums until today. So the musicians have been together for almost 40 years, Steve H. joined in '89. Pete is also a member of the supergroup Transatlantic. Yes he is great!
Whether to choose live or studio is a decision that is a bit more complex than you think. With Marillion, always choose live. for Hogarth-era songs. Hogarth must think that singing more softly in his head voice and in that odd range where his normal voice meets his falsetto is his most emotioally impactful tone. He adopts that voice in a lot of his studio work. When performing live, he sings more forcefully from his chest, and that improves the songs about 10x over the studio versions. Also, find a video version rather than a live CD version, because Hogarth's antics as frontman also add greatly to the emotional impact of a song. As he has aged and gotten more experience under his belt, Hogarth's singing has gotten better. In live performances filmed sometimes decades after the studio versions were released, his voice is fuller and more complex than the somewhat nasally tenor he exhibits on the stuff from the '90's.
Nice one! It's really nice to hear your commentary again. Your woodworking, jewelry, and hats are are sooo good. I wish I could purchase, but I'm not able to. I hope those than can purchase, will check out your website, and buy from you. ❤
So much of Marillion's catalog is composed of ballads and songs having a slow tempo. The fans' love of this song is based in part, I think, in that it is one of the few uptempo tunes, and maybe the best of those few.
Listen to Easter. Chills. What a song
Never forgot the first listen to this song…when the first Album with Steve Hogarth released…back in 89…
Thanks, Todd....this band have been the soundtrack to my life for 32 years straight... what a privilege....
Take a listen to CARE live…it just released
Will do, thank you for the recommendation.

It was exactly the same for me. After the unfortunately chosen single Hooks in you, I was able to take a deep breath 😂
I still think of him as the new guy
