I haven't listened to this album for nearly 20 years now and I can sing along every word and every note from the first second. It's incredible what impression Fish left with his music in my mind and soul.
I was living in Italy when Fish did his first solo tour and a friend of mine ran the local fan club so I managed to catch multiple shows and even talk with Fish after the show in Roma. Great memories.
Great reaction Jim, this is still my favourite Fish solo album. the line from the title track that goes "when I need reassurance I listen to the crowd" will always stand out to me because of the reaction it got on his first solo tour, it still gives me goose bumps.
Thanks Jim. When I think of Fish this is the one that comes to mind. The Marillion era. FISH, Misplaced Childhood and my favorite Clutching at Straws are exceptional albums.
Heard it so many times and it's such a great album with really great songs Thanks for the reaction and reminding listening it the first time so many years ago ,33 years 😮, as i was 17 years old ❤
Yes, the pipes on Vigil are real, by Davy Spillane. This is the ultimate Fish solo album. Watching your reaction with a big smile on my face. I was twenty -two at the time. The CD booklet had worn quickly because I kept it in my hand all the time, singing along with the big man. Now remembering those days of youth and raising my beer glass to Fish's health, to your health and to rock gods. Cheers from Istanbul. 🍻💞🎸
3rd try at my comment: Couldn't click fast enough. I was so excited that my comment was unintelligible. 🤣 Love Fish, love this album. I first heard Marrilian in 1984 When I was exposed to them by a friend who had the first Sony Walkman I'd ever seen. He put the headphones on my head and that was it... Was mesmerized and a fan ever since. When fish left I was a fan from the beginning and continued on with all of his work. I haven't heard this album in probably twenty years since my cd got destroyed. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I still love and play this album often, still one of my favourites. Back in 1992 when I had to think of a name for my first and still my only house, there was an album stuck in my head. Erm, my house is still called Vigil! Thanks Fish! Jim, it's great seeing someone appreciating this music for the first time, the whole album is just brilliant, you are going to enjoy this trip! When music really was music!
There's something so amazing with his lyrics, I think. That combined with the awesome music on his earlier works makes for excellence. Having seen him live in the last five years, it makes you only wish that Doris Brendel had been involved this early. Your view on this is so spot on.
I feel old LOL!!! Saw him in Glasgow, Barrolands, 1990 I think, just after my 19th birthday (or 20th if 1991). Fantastic venue and Fish was literally on fire!
excellent album, so good to see you doing some fish, i would highly recommend sunsets on empire, that album is awesome, and his last album weltschmerz is amazing too
Hi Jim, I’m a big fan of Fish (and Marillion). Bought this album (1990) at least 25 years ago together with the album Internal exile (1991). Other albums followed It’s been some years I listened to it. This is a very good debut solo album, love it very much. I love his singing that always contains a little aggressive and reproachefull voice. You mention Simple Minds but I would add Joe Jackson. Oh, now you name more bands 😅
This is my fave album ever by fish, much better than his Marillion material but I only know this album and the one with the song called credo on it. I even like his singing though it sounds a bit like the Phil Collins guy. Thank you for playing the album it was awesome
I sometimes need that special room of Marillion. Then it has to be Fish - transporting me away into the romantic progressive post-punk rock magic. This was a great album. The 4-album streak with Marillion and the early stuff as well. Listening to Grendel still gives me goosebumps. Fish gives goosebumps.
This Album is mostly a reaction to the split with Marillion. The hill stands for the music business at that time with the white Porsche 944 Turbo of Steve Rothery on the top of the hill and Mark Kelly + John Arnison (Marillion Manager) sitting arround a fire (which has to be deleted from the next print on). So much stories behind the stories behind the stories...
Have had Vigil since it came out. Just a fabulous cd. Looking for the remaster when Fish gets it in his UK store. That store ships to the US as well. He just reopened it mere weeks ago. Lots of treasures there for nice prices @ fishmusic 🎉
Based on your reaction you might like his album SUITS, which has a similar vibe to the big wedge. I still think that his last 2/3 albums were his best though.

Same
Same here!
There was Fish with all his cilinders open...it that time i loved him...
The 2024 remix of Vigil is excellent

Fish has lots of great stuff. Even his latest album is super!
Great album. Saw him on this tour too and the band was terrific.

The track Vigil is an absolute belter…cover artwork is incredible,
brilliantly detailed.
Glad to hear you're enjoying this album, it's one of my favourites.
The lyrics and music on this album just flow seamlessly.
Hi James.... fabulous! Thanks so much - really good. Last part tomorrow!
I ❤ fish. Period.
I feel old LOL!!! Saw him in Glasgow, Barrolands, 1990 I think, just after my 19th birthday (or 20th if 1991). Fantastic venue and Fish was literally on fire!
Literally?🔥
excellent album, so good to see you doing some fish, i would highly recommend sunsets on empire, that album is awesome, and his last album weltschmerz is amazing too
Great to see you enjoying more Fish Jim👍
Songs from the mirror has to be mentioned, I love it!
Fantastic album love fish

Fantastic re-visit with this amazing Fish album. Remember that I bought it after he left Marillion. So nice to listen to this again. Thanks Jim!!

the song Vigil is just so beautiful...especially the intro keys. It's of the same beauty of Mercy Street from Peter Gabriel
Man, I’ve listened to this album so much! Great pick. Awesome lyrics, terrific Fish, brilliant altogether
A bloody lovely album
Very underrated lyric writer!
Fish's lyrics are actually more revelant now than when he recorded them - state of the country under the Tory regime

This is one I have been waiting for!!!!!! Amen!!!!!!
awsome FISH - look up who the artists who played on this album

Another interessting Fish album would be "Sunsets on empire", co-written and produced by Steven Wilson.
❤Fish
A perfect album.
Fish set the bar too high. This remains his best solo album and he never quite reached these heights again.
Jim Happy 420!🗽☕🖖
I don't know what the is, but thank you!
@@JimNewstead Let's just say it's a more recent US holiday based around Tea. The smoking varation. Goes good with music. 🗽😉 Walt
Only trouble for fish was it was too good for first album after marillion , he could never reach those heights again. Fantastic album
I like Fish without Marillion better than Marillion without Fish. 😊
And I like Marillion without Fish MUCH MUCH better than Fish without Marillion 😁
Fish without Marillion is like fish out of a water:-)But "Vigil","Internal Exile","Suits" and " A Feast of Consequences" i admire.Other...are...
Just an interesting side note, Fish wrote “Vigil” and “Big Wedge” for Marillion but the band turned it down. The latter was seen as too anti-American.
Nah...mediocre
FiSH is genius lyricist from day 1. The first two solo albums were really great, but after that I think he stagnated and became quite boring actually.
