    On Avalanche Danger: I'm not seeing any other comments on the avalanche assessment, which may be a little concerning. Here's my $0.02 for whoever was or wasn't asking. And Nikolai, I'd totally appreciate your input if you see this. It looks like the apron of the couloir was still totally avalanche terrain. I personally wouldn't have even gotten to your first pit location without at least another pit earlier. And in both pits it looked like there was a clean cleavage plane (with propagation?) at something around 10 hits (maybe a persistent weak layer of some sort, or a thick storm slab?). And at the second pit it looked like a not insignificant wind slab over the same instability. For me with my experience (certainly less than yours), this would have been 2 red flags, either of which would have warranted turning around or finding different terrain.
    On a different note, climbing a couloir lets you know what conditions are in it, but in general I've always considered it, at best, bad backcountry etiquette, and at worst, unnecessarily placing oneself in prolonged avalanche danger.
    Once again, I don't mean to be critical or arrogant, and I would love to hear other people's thoughts and maybe hear a discussion.

    • @Nikolai_Schirmer
      @Nikolai_Schirmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I would just not try to read avy conditions from a video. You never have the information you need.
      To answer your concerns:
      1. If you look at the vid again you’ll see there isn’t any snow to dig in before we get to the apron. It’s a few centimeters of bulletproof snow. We dug in a spot that wasn’t exposed to most of the couloir above.
      2. Again, a video. You don’t see the plane. You for sure don’t see propagation. The second pit is an ECTX, which is why Krister pulls the block out with his shovel. Essentially we went from a good test to a better test.
      3. The only way to ski this couloir safely is to climb it from the bottom, because if you do the two rappels from the top and find that the snow is unsafe, you’re fucked.

    • @davidgill2
      @davidgill2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow Thanks for the response! I guess the big lesson here is not to judge avy conditions from a youtube video. Appreciate ya! Keep up the great content!!

    Hi Nikolai! First of all I have to say that you're doing great stuff in the mountains and those are badass videos. I'm a skier from the austrian alps and I really admire your skiing and skitouring. The message you deliver trying to save our winters and environment is super cool and you trying to reduce your ecological footprint is inspiring. But I'm a whitewater kayaker also and from that perspective I know a lot about river protection and the harm hydroplants do to our environment. Those dams kill everything you're trying to save as do fossil powerplants. Just in a different way. There's lots of information about it if you're interested. Maybe you wanna take a look. It's heartbreaking when you kayak a river and see all the untouched nature from the middel of it and the next year it's shut down by a powerplant and all the animals are gone... So please don't get this in a negative way. I don't intend to citicize you. In fact I think you are a really cool guy and great skier but hydropower is NOT green energy. People like you just with another sports backgound fight for our rivers and against hydropower with all their heart. Just like you fight for our winters. Thank you! riverwatch.eu/en/general/videos/blue-heart

    • @Nikolai_Schirmer
      @Nikolai_Schirmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Heyhey, I hear you. I know dams can be really bad, and we have lots of debate about what kind of green energy sources we should develop here in Norway. Wind is meeting massive resistance for the habitat loss it causes, and solar is not really an option this far north.
      The EU has issued guidelines for how you can do hydro in a way that doesn’t harm the rivers too bad. Basically you can divert a section of the river for energy and still leave most of it intact. Put in «stairs» for the fish, and a few other measures.
      But yeah. Not perfect. I agree. 100%. We shouldn’t build more, but rather focus on getting the most out of everything that’s already there, and work to make that less harmful.

    Curious about the thought process of wheter to upload or edit out these falls in this steep terrain. I mean, sure it went fine - and it usually does.
    But I think it conveys a weird message that is okay to be in these places and lose control. Every once in a while we hear about accidents with a lot worse outcomes and I can't help but think that these people just don't know what dangers steep terrain pose, partly because it is so exposed in media.
    Maybe it's the editing, music, GoPros and full on production that makes it look worse than it really is because I'm at the edge of my seat watching your videos.
    Sorry for rant, I really enjoy your videos and wish you safe snowpacks!
