Rob old son, I am so happy to see(and hear) that you are back to using the ever classic, "and do remember to lubricate the end of your piece, you don't want to snap it". When I first started watching I remember thinking, that's excellent tip and one I shall always remember it.

looking shiny again. surely that lady has become a terrific driver. :)
interesting mechanism. they actually managed to create a steering trapeze when every other brand used slots or moving suspensions and axles for it. that was a lot of brainwork to accomplish, and to make it lasting, too. hat's off to the corgi developers!

Oh mate you kicked it straight in with this one ! In my opinion it is as near perfect as anything to date. This is the way it should have looked when new. The improvement in technique is more subtle now, a finer hand with the detail brush as well as the air brush. The fellow who gets this one back should be well satisfied and proud to own it!

The black residue is the tin part of the mix. When you strip oxidated alluminium or lead it became exposed and reduce itself becoming istantly a black powder material who cannot solve in water.

Love this toy. I inherited it from my brother who also taught my how to park: it was very useful when I obtained my driving license years later 😊
Corgi also issued a second driving school model and I had it. It was a metallic blue VW Beetle with golden steering wheel on top. But my favorite was the Austin! Excellent restoration Rob 😉

Lovely! 98.2% is close enough. I love the decals; evidently the UK really didn't fool around with the signage on driving school cars in the '60s. :)
That black residue looks a lot like magnetite (the oxide of iron responsible for the blue-black color on blued guns), but I doubt the alloy these cars are made of has iron in it, so that's probably just a coincidence. Maybe there's an oxide of zinc that resembles it?

I know what you mean about being SO CLOSE on restoring cars: I was almost done with putting some clearcoat on a model of a school bus I was restoring, sun's going down, and an errant hair somehow floats onto the clearcoat and gets stuck in the paint. HOURS of work destroyed!
I was NOT a happy person!

Such a great model. A simple idea, powered by levers and imagination. You just don't get that in toys anymore these days. One of my 'Holy Grails' is to find a left-hand drive version of this model. I have the version you have there, but I know that Corgi made an LHD version for export markets. I also always wish that Corgi had made an equivalent Morris Oxford - the type so beloved in India, and known as the 'Hindustan'. I do remember Jeremy Clarkson using a real one as a runabout in India and liking it a great deal.
Your restoration, as always, is a thing of beauty. Nice one.

Beautiful resto', Rob. I can't imagine what came over some child to paint all over this beauty. Glad to see it restored. Also, I think the black residue you got could possibly be a zinc additive reacting with the caustic soda. Stay safe.

WOW! Fantastic job 👏. Yes I agree you don’t see that kind of toy car and the attention to detail etc on today’s toy cars. I do wonder what that car (and other car toys in the same size and detail and brands of the day) costed back in the day. I guess it probably was only affluent families that could’ve afford that type of toys. And what a modern day toy car like that with the same kind of attention to detail or probably rather a display collectible car would cost in today’s money

  • @glennhales617

Use your pledge floor shine as a clear coat. Just brush it on and it will self level, just don't put it too heavy to pool up on edges. It should not react to your paints.

  • @anthonysweitzer4236

Caustic has a reaction with castings that have higher concentrations of aluminum. You are lucky to not lose parts to the caustic soda.

I don’t use costick, it tends to eat into the metal, I use stripper, it’s a pain but the casting is good, I’ve used the soda but had bad pitting and it eats the metal
