Toyota Needle Bearing Yukon Upgrade Bushing Install Stopped Steering Wobble (Did it go away in 4wd?)

  • After getting my 2011 Tacoma and joining FB groups and really researching parts and known issues I kept hearing about this needle bearing going bad. That it can go so bad a $70 part can break and get into your front diff causing potentially thousands in damages. The original part for reference is IFS 8" Clamshell SD20B
    My Tacoma had 63k miles when I got it, and I didn't notice the typical symptoms of the bad needle bearing- vibrations you feel in the floorboard and a wobbling steering wheel. I threw on a 3" lift and some other updates and towed a car on a dolly and drove a 14 hour round trip to get a topper, and within 6 months after my lift I noticed I was getting the vibration in the floor and the steering wheel wobbles. The wobbly steering wheel got to the point I couldn't NOT notice it anymore. Would it have gone bad anyways, did the lift expedite the bearing going bad?
    So, more research and after a couple months not really driving the Tacoma much, I decided not to let this part ruin anything else on the truck. I ordered the Yukon ‎"YB AX-018" bushing for the 8" Toyota clamshell SD20B front end and made a post asking if anyone had their one-time-use bearing puller and driver kit they might have bought or borrowed to do the same job. A nice guy about 45 minutes away had it and I was able to get it picked up a few days before doing this job, and I got the job done 3 days before posting this video on 4-11-22.
    As mentioned in the video, there is no difference between this brand and the ECGS brand. There's another brand called Nitro I think that offers the same bushing. ECGS wanted to charge me $15 shipping, so they lost out.
    This is not an extremely technical job, but it is very demanding if you don't have a lift and all the right tools at arms length. I had 2 quotes for this job 1 by ECGS and the other by Apex Offroad, the quotes were ECGS $250 and Apex $178. I paid $75 for the Yukon bushing and installed it myself with a borrowed tool kit. It was nice to save some money but even though this job was difficult I would say I also got to learn more and experience my truck in a different way.
    I recommend this product and can vouch that it fixed the issue.

    Did mine this weekend on my gen 2 toco. I didnt have the same play yours had, but i replaced it as preventive measures since i installed the bilstein 5100 with the 2 inch lift. The only issue i had was when it came to changing the diff seal. As an fyi to anyone the pasanger side and driverside seals are different sizes. The passenger side uses a way bigger ball bearing, in turn uses a different seal. If you call toyota they call it an oil seal. It was a pain trying to get the correct one not knowing its called an oil seal. So driverside diff seal. Passenger side oil seal. Great video the one you have is the one for the passenger side.

      @Dan Bacarra that's good to know about the seal being for passenger side. Thankfully I was able to reuse my old driver side since it wasn't damaged and returned the wrong side! Might as well replace the needle bearing while you're in there! Thanks for the comment!

    Thanks Sean . I believe that axle seal you are showing is for the passenger side . I just ordered the kit and asked for a passenger side seal to be sent with the kit because I'm changing out both axles also . So I have the same part number on my second seal that is separate from the kit .thanks for the video its very detailed . It will be very helpful next weekend

    Hey, I lifted my truck and mine has a vibration at 60-65mph, but I can't feel it in the steering wheel, do you think it's the needle bearing?

    • @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN
      @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @JW45-70 put it in 4wd and see if it goes away, that's a telltale sign of a bad needle bearing. Check the play in the drive shaft at the center carrier bearing if there is play or the rubber is cracked up it's shot. That causes vibration too.

    So I replaced the needle bearing with the ECGS bearing few days ago.
    CV Axle is tight again, but there's still a humming noise coming from the front driver side.. ive put in several hundred miles already and the noise is still present, just like when the needle bearing was going out.
    I've checked the passenger side and that axle is tight.

    Did you have this issue after replacing it?

      @FiveFoot mine was never making a noise. You may have cv joint or axle bearing noise. Pull the wheel and spin the axle and see if you can hear it. It may sound or feel grindy with no weight, but at speed with weight it comes across as a whine or squeal.

    Great job. Only one question why not just buy a new axle seal too? not expensive i cant see re-using. Great tutorial and so glad to see just how it is done, with all the info is great for someone who has not taken one apart so far. I'm sure it's same for the 4runner. I wonder how many miles they are rated for...the bushings good for a ton of miles or like 100k before it wears and wobbles too ?? Or is it harder than the axle and the axle will wear which would be easier actually right ?? I'll eventually need to do it. Thank You !

      @G. Fortin I had a seal I ordered but the day of the job with everything apart knee deep in the fender well I realized it was the wrong size for some dang reason, so I set it aside and just reused the old seal. Yeaaah maybe not ideal but it looked perfectly fine and they are not known to go bad. Yes for sure I hope I didn't introduce an issue removing and reinstalling but honestly I'd seen a few videos of guys doing the same thing.
      Thanks for the feedback and I hope your install goes smoothly. If not, it's probably best to just give me the 4Runner because my wife wants one anyways! Lol. This bushing shouldn't need to be replaced again. It has a wider footprint than the needles did against the axle shaft and rides flush on the axle, unlike the needles that were actually wobbling end to end to support the axle as I believe I showed in the video. Take it easy!

    • @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN
      @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Stevan Rose I believe ECGS did a video of how this application is actually more common using rhe bushing vs the needle bearing setup. My video also shows how the shorter length of the needle bearings doesn't distribute the load enough and the ends of the needle bearing rods were rounding off.

    • @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN
      @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Richy Bubulinski the bearings are oil impregnated and have a larger flat surface area to decrease wear on individual spots across the surface unlike the needle bearing which was shorter and the needles were even shorter than the casing and the needles could teeter totter in the casing and it caused uneven wear as shown in my video. The passenger side is actually made more like the bearing and doesn't need to be replaced. Not sure why they used the needle bearing design on the driver side and especially why they kept using it year after year generation after generation knowing it failed...
